TERM 2
WEEK 9
–
26 JUNE 2015
–
ISSUE 20 / 15
Dear St Michael’s Community,
As you are aware, last week saw St Michael’s College students and staff engaged in a number of activities promoting social justice,
service and charity organisations through Charities Week and Year 10 CAD/RAD.
Service projects and outreach programs bring the poor's voice into the lives of students and enriches the College community through
action to help meet the needs of others. In this spirit, I draw your attention to the notices below, as we move to support these very
worthy causes over the next week.
As I am travelling to the USA on Sunday morning for a two week Lasallian studies course, I’d like to wish all staff, students and families
a successful end to the semester and a restful upcoming break. It is well-deserved!
ST VINCENT DE PAUL WINTER APPEAL CLOTHING DRIVE
On any given night in Australia, one in 200 people are homeless. These people are often sleeping out in the open, on the street or
in unsafe and unstable housing. The St Vincent de Paul Society annually launches a Winter Clothing Drive to collect blankets and
clothing for those in need.
In South Australia alone, almost 6,000 people are currently homeless, and will face a long and cold winter without shelter or adequate
clothing. As a College community we hope to change this dire situation for many of the less fortunate and to support St Vinnie's to
make a difference!
St Michael's College will be supporting St Vinnie's in their mission to help the homeless population. In week 10, 29 June – 3 July
2015 of this term, there will be 30 clothing bins placed around the Secondary Campus (including one in the Front Office from Monday
to Friday, between 8:00am and 4:30pm) and the Primary Campus.
Students, staff and families are encouraged to bring any unwanted clothes (preferably warm, suitable for winter) as well as blankets
to deposit in any of these numerous bins. Families are asked to look through their wardrobes for articles of clothing that might still
be wearable but perhaps no longer fit, have been grown out of or are just not needed. These articles will be passed on to very
appreciative recipients. Please take this opportunity to de-clutter your wardrobe.
Visit their website for other ways to assist – www.vinnies.org.au/winterappeal or call 13 18 12.

CASUAL DAY TO SUPPORT THE HUTT STREET CENTRE
To further support the community, students may wear casual clothes on Friday 3
July 2015 for a gold coin donation to support the work of the Daughters of Charity
at the Hutt Street Centre for the homeless. Once again, I trust that St Michael’s
College will demonstrate its tremendous spirit of kindness and generosity.
Live Jesus in our hearts!

CHARITIES WEEK
YEAR 10 STATIONERY DRIVE
As part of Charities Week at the College, all Year 10 students were asked to bring in
various items of usable stationery to our Reflection Activity Day to be donated to
BoysTown. This organisation is dedicated to enabling young people, especially those
who are marginalised, to improve their quality of life and education. The Stationery
Drive initiative was the first of its kind at St Michael's College and it was overwhelming
to have such an abundance of stationery items brought in for donation. One of the key
messages of our Church Awareness Day and Reflection Activity Day (CAD/RAD) is to
promote the idea that there are far less fortunate people in our society compared to
us. With this, the Year 10 students learnt about the generosity and selfless work many
people and organisations in Adelaide do to help those in need. Our Stationery Drive
was another small way in which we as a cohort could help to make a positive
difference, particularly to the young people at Boystown, who are in dire need of
stationery items.
For those students who have not yet donated an item of stationery, there is still time to do so as we are collecting items until the end
of term. Well done Year 10s!
Mr Mark Labrosciano, Assistant Year Level Director – Year 10
REFUGEE WEEK 2015
During Refugee Week (15 June – 19 June 2015) many fundraising initiatives took place at the College to raise funds to donate to the
Australian Refugee Association (ARA). The Lasallian Youth Leaders of the College were given the privilege of volunteering and leading
the cooking and selling of sausages during lunch time from Wednesday to Friday of Week 8. There were groups of four people each
day allowing different people to take part in this enjoyable and beneficial activity. The Lasallian Youth Leaders are a large group of
students who represent our school not only as Lasallians and helping to spread the word of De La Salle, but as representatives of the
Year 11 year level. Students in years below can see the benefits and the good that is reflected, hopefully inspiring them to join the
Lasallian Youth Leaders in the future.
Overall, this sausage sizzle promoted the mission of ARA and raised over $800, which will help refugees and ARA continue to play the
important roles needed to ensure safety and comfort for refugees and their families in a new country.
Mr Gavin O’Reilly, Assistant Year Level Director – Year 11
THE BIG DAY IN
On Thursday 18 June a group of Year 11 and 12 Information Technology
students attended the Big Day In Careers Conference at Adelaide University.
We heard from a number of speakers including representatives from Microsoft,
IBM, Adobe and HP, as well as professionals working in banking and human
services. The speakers demonstrated the breadth of careers in the industry
ranging from content and design jobs through to the technology services
industry to business services, as well as product development in hardware and
software. Current university students gave valuable advice on course selection
as well as highlighting opportunities for paid work while studying, especially the
Australian Government ICT Cadetship Programme. One of our students, Dylan
Tittoto, won a Raspberry Pi 2 credit-card sized computer in the raffle and
remarked: “It was an informative experience that I recommend to anyone with
an interest in Information Technology. It has opened up numerous pathways for
me to follow that I might not have considered.” As pictured to the left, students
were able to check out industry stalls during the breaks. Jordan Dametto
experienced the new Oculus Rift Virtual reality headset: “It was quite interesting
and very fun”, he reported. Overall the day gave an insight into how much growth
in employment there will be in this industry, with excellent flexibility to travel
and find work anywhere. Whether a coder, a designer, engineer or business
analyst, there is so much opportunity in this sector.
Mr Stephen Harvey -Teacher, Information Technology
CAD/RAD
Year 10 students spent two days out of the College during Week 8, involved
in our annual CAD/RAD days. CAD, or Church Awareness Day, was designed
to give our students a practical insight into the works of a number of Adelaide
Charities. In small groups our students visited various organisations
including Caritas Australia, Louise Place, Hutt Street Centre and St Vincent
de Paul. They heard enlightening accounts of the plight of the disadvantaged
in our community and of how the various welfare agencies have helped make
a positive difference for those in their care. The CAD students then
assembled at Cathedral Hall in the city to partake in various activities aimed
at sharing their experiences from the charity visits. In tandem with CAD was
Reflection Activity Day (or RAD), presented by Graham Hyman, from Youth
Specialties Australia. RAD was held at the Woodville Football Club, where
students were challenged to reflect on their relationships, their priorities and
the direction of their lives as they enter their senior years of schooling.
Feedback from students indicates that they learnt a great deal about the
range of support agencies working in Adelaide and were challenged by the
experiences offered through CAD and RAD.
Mr Tony Healy, Year Level Director – Year 10
YEAR 8 BOYS ITALIAN/SCIENCE ZOO EXCURSION
On Friday, 19 June, all six Year 8 boys’ classes went to the Adelaide Zoo for
Science and Italian. We learnt a lot about animals and how to describe their
behaviour and characteristics in both English and Italian.
We completed a booklet for each subject. For Science we focused on organisms,
including vertebrates and invertebrates, and for Italian we focused on oral
language and how to answer questions about animals in Italian. We learnt more
about animals through both subjects using scientific terminology and new
Italian words.
The excursion helped us to improve our understanding because we got to see
the animals live so that we could examine what they were doing, even if it was
in an artificial habitat. We had lots of opportunities to practise our Italian skills
and increase our Italian vocabulary, using new words orally and in writing.
The highlight was the meerkats (i suricati). They were the most entertaining as
they moved around the most. The chimpanzees were also very active and noisy.
Overall it was a good day and a great experience. Even the weather was good. Thank you to all the teachers who attended and helped
us improve our knowledge and skills in both subjects.

‘LEADERSHIP IS ANY ACTION THAT
MAKES THE WORLD WE TOUCH A
BETTER PLACE’
On Wednesday 3 June 2015, the Year 9 Student
Leaders went to the Adelaide Convention Centre
to participate in the YLead Altitude Day. During
the day inspirational guest speakers spoke about
their own experiences and gave us some advice
about how to be strong leaders in our own schools
and communities.
Throughout the day we were involved in many social activities which required us to communicate with
Student Leaders from other schools in South Australia. These activities placed us outside of our comfort zone
but were a lot of fun. The event definitely motivated the participants to make good choices, to build
confidence and to form friendships along the way. I found the day to be very successful as I learnt that if
you let opportunities pass, you will never know what you could be missing out on. Overall, the day was an
experience that we will never forget.

CAREERS TERM 3
Next term is the busiest term for Student Services Careers and VET.
Year 12
We support Year 12 students with their 2016 SATAC applications for University and TAFE SA, due at the end of September for university
and the end of October for TAFE SA. In most cases students can add to their course preference application, change the order and
delete preferences right through to early January 2016. On Monday 3 August 2015 at 7:00pm we will host an Information Night for
interested Year 12 parents who wish to know more about the SATAC application process and the transition to university and/or TAFE
SA. On the same night students will be able to attend a mini Tertiary Entrance Expo here at the College and ask questions of the Uni
and TAFE Admission Representatives. We have urged Year 12 students to make an appointment with the Career Counsellors before
the Year 10 and Year 11 subject selection process which begins in Week 3 next term. We continue to encourage students who are not
aiming for a Tertiary pathway to make an appointment and discuss their plans.
Year 10 and Year 11 Students
There is an extensive support structure in place to assist students in making their 2016 subject selections. As part of this, students
may wish to make an appointment with a Career Counsellor once they have worked through the normal process.
TERTIARY OPEN DAYS Friday 14, Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August 2015
We encourage families to set aside time on this weekend to attend the Open Day events staged by the Universities and TAFE SA.

FLINDERS UNIVERSITY UPDATE
Last week we had the honour of touring the new Tonsley Campus of Flinders Uni where most of the Engineering, Computer Science
and Maths subjects are delivered. It is now the closest university campus to St Michael’s College.
The state-of-the-art $120 million building was designed by award-winning international architects HASSELL. It centrally locates Flinders
University’s School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics with the Flinders Medical Device Research Institute and the
Centre for Nanoscale Science and Technology alongside some of Adelaide’s biggest businesses and industries.
The school offers a range of disciplines including Biomedical, Civil, Electronic, Electrical, IT and Software Engineering, Design and
Innovation and Engineering Science and Technology. There are state-of-the-art learning facilities, illuminated glass walls where
students write a problem and others provide a solution during the day, work lounges that provide soundproof discussion areas, student
lockers, where digital technology can be safely locked away and recharged and amazing study areas; outside courtyards and light
filled interior spaces.
There are many companies linked in with the new facility ensuring students gain a workforce edge to their degree. Flinders at Tonsley
is also a hub for entrepreneurs and next-generation start-ups through the New Venture Institute (NVI). The NVI, the centre of
innovation and entrepreneurship at the university runs programs, mentors and helps the next generation of ideas to become reality.
The fact that the Bachelor of Design and Innovation is placed there too, provides so much scope for budding entrepreneurs.
Flinders at Tonsley promotes collaboration, a place for students to interact with business and where business interacts with researchers
in areas such as Engineering, Medical Devices and Nanoscale Technologies, to make the new products and processes of the 21st
century. We strongly recommend you check out the Flinders Focus Website, follow the Tonsley links and be inspired,
http://flindersfuturefocus.flinders.edu.au/.
THE AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH COMPETITION
Mr Karnas, Gifted and Talented Coordinator at St Michael’s College, has brought to our attention a student competition for budding
Medical Scientists. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 interested in careers in Medicine, Dentistry, Health Science and Medical Science,
or one of these pathways are encouraged to enter the competition. The competition closes 2 July 2015, so not only would it be a good
pre-UMAT practice as it includes 20 multiple choice, a great result may affirm aptitude in these areas and encourage more specific
career planning. It is very worthwhile to enter these competitions and see where your level lies in a broader setting. Go to: The
Australian Society for Medical Research Competition at http://asmr.org.au/MRWQuiz.html.

OPEN GIRLS KNOCKOUT FOOTBALL
On 11 June 2015, St Michael’s College First XVIII Girl’s
football team ventured to Central Districts Football Oval
to play round 2 of the Open Girls Knockout Football
competition. Our competition was Nuriootpa High
School and Faith Lutheran School who had both won
their round robin competitions against four other
schools in round 1 to play against us.
The team started the day off strong against Faith
Lutheran College, taking control of the game early.
Sophie Morgan provided forward run through the
middle and accurate kicking from Lauren Steer assisted
in getting the ball into the multiple goal scorers of
Demasi, Watts, Williams and Steer. St Michael’s College
won the first game 56-0.
Coaches Mr Williams and Mr Spencer knew the second
game against Nuriootpa High School would be the more
challenging for the day. Both coaches went into tactic
overdrive providing individual guidance to the girls on
how they needed to shut down their opposition. Team captains, Hodges and Marinoff, rose to the challenge, inspiring the team with
their fancy footwork. Hard work at ground level and tight defense of players prevented Nuriootpa from having the drive and clear
kicking previously shown. The whole team lifted to win their second game 21 to 7. Goal scorers for the game were Watts and Demasi.
The win means the team will move on to round 3 of the Open Girls Knockout Football competition, being hosted at St Michael’s next
term. Congratulations to all involved on a great day.
