PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.” Cicero One of the distinctive qualities of the women and men at Rainbow Acres is their social graces. When one stops to listen to the interactions between the Ranchers and employees, those wonderful magical words “thank you” conclude just about every conversation. It is genuine and heartwarming! They have learned their “thank you’s” very well from family and friends! Gary W. Wagner President & CEO When I consider all of the blocks, barriers, frustrations and disappointments the Ranchers deal with every day, I should be saying “thank you” for making every effort to be a member of the Rainbow Community. A well timed “thank you” always brings a smile to the Ranchers faces! In this issue of the Rainbow Promise we “thank you” and express our deepest appreciation for the faithful support of Rainbow Acres Circle of Friends. That support in 2011 was indeed awesome! Over my 16 years at Rainbow Acres, I have had the privilege of becoming acquainted with many in our Circle of Friends. When I consider the breadth and depth of life experiences, the gifts from the widow’s mite to the farmer’s great harvest, I stand in awe and appreciation of the giver and the gift! We owe you a debt of gratitude for believing in our great calling to care for the poor, the widow’s child, the sick and maimed, the blind and lame. On behalf of the 99 Ranchers we served in 2011, the 63 employees and the Board of Trustees, it is my privilege to extend to you, once again, our heart felt appreciation for your faithful support!!! For the Ranchers, Gary W. Wagner President & CEO T ! u o hank Y RAINBOW ACRES • • • THE PROMISE • • • SUMMER 2012 • • • 03 VOLUNTEER PROFILE IN THEIR own WORDS Marlys Mallet & MichaelRedhawk Editors Note: Artists Marlys Mallet and Michael Redhawk, affectionately called M&M by staff members, needed little prompting to tell the story of their much-appreciated volunteering at Rainbow Acres. Up until April of 2011 we didn’t know we had a Mission. Now we do! The Lord laid his plans for us when he created the opportunity for us to create one of our Unison paintings as a mural for the new Palmer Community Center at Rainbow Acres. That was the beginning of our love affair with the Ranchers who live there. At the Dedication of the building a Rancher sat beside us and asked us to meet his friend Kelly since she liked art. We met and wanted to invite her to visit our studio but Gary Wagner suggested we might take the idea a little further and teach a few students at Rainbow. Well, we did that and the next thing you know we were setting up a serious Fine Arts Program for those Ranchers with the desire and the basic skills necessary to succeed. It’s been over a year now and WE have learned so much! Our students simply amaze us with their determination to create. Just making a horizontal or vertical line was difficult in the beginning but we challenged them with still lifes, landscapes and portraits. Each class radiates with the excitement and challenges of new techniques and concepts. Our first four “advanced” students, as well as the four newer ones, never cease to delight us with their creativity and their pride of accomplishment. Their self-esteem seems to be growing by the day, which is our first priority. This growth is happening as they discover how enriching it can be to create, to have a passion to paint. It’s a gift we can give them that could enrich their lives forever Marlys: A rt has been my life’s passion. I’ve gone to Art Schools in New Orleans, LA and Palo Alto, CA, have had a number of major exhibitions while painting a diary of my journey throughout the years. Michael: I am a self-taught, award-winning jeweler, who has owned jewelry stores in Virginia Beach and Sedona. I began plein air painting twenty-five years ago under the tutelage of some of Sedona’s premier painters and now enjoy sharing a canvas with my abstract wife as we develop our Unison paintings. We decide on the subject that we feel will teach them specific lessons starting with simple forms like the sunflowers and fish and moving into more complex 04 • • • RAINBOW ACRES • • • THE PROMISE • • • SUMMER 2012 compositions and techniques. The students choose the colors. They have learned to mix acrylic tube paints on a palette and how to paint on canvas at an easel - like professionals. There’s a lot of teasing that goes on between the abstract teacher and the realistic one that gets everyone laughing. Some of the students will want to quit at some stage of a painting, but when we push them beyond that point to refine their work, they are amazed at the results. Thus we have adopted the phrase “trust us”, which often brings a bit of humor to the process. Marlys: O ne of our first students has touched my heart with his growth from withdrawn to outright confidence and dedication to his Art. We were told 2 hour classes would be the limit. Hah, he would stay for four hours if he could! Michael: When Heather beamed with pride after finishing her Monument Valley painting – she said, “When you brought in your painting and said we were going to paint one like it, I said to myself, NO WAY”. On another occasion she said how much she had appreciated a jeep ride now that she had learned “how to see nature”. Her eyes were opened to the beauty around her because of her painting classes. We have been blessed with good health and artistic talents and we relish all the warm hugs and smiles we get as we share our love of art with our Ranchers. Rainbow has given us so much more than we could have ever imagined. We still love to create our own artwork, and indeed need to paint to pay our bills. However our dream is for the Art Department at Rainbow to grow with additional teachers offering more classes in a Fine Arts Building. We believe in the healing power of self-expression through art, and we are proud to be able to bring this to Rainbow Acres. Margie Beach has joined our staff as Director of Communications and Community Relations, and Steve Roblee is the new Director of Church Relations. MARGIE BEACH knows everybody in our surrounding community! She is a third generation native of Arizona, and loves it! Her enthusiasm and gentle spirit have helped her to become an immediate partner in the ministry at Rainbow, and an instant friend to our Ranchers. Margie attended school in Cottonwood and Jerome and considers the Verde Valley home. A graduate of Arizona State University, she most recently served as Communications Director with Phoenix Cement/Salt River Materials Group. Margie’s love for the community has made her the perfect advocate for Rainbow in the area. As we seek to strengthen our visibility, Margie brings an outstanding local network and excellent skills for promoting Rainbow in a variety of media forums nationwide. We are excited to have Margie as part of our Advancement team! Married to Dave, Margie has two grown daughters and seven grandchildren, lives in Cottonwood and is a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church. … e m o c l e W STEVE ROBLEE has a passion for mission and ministry! He has broad experience in development, serving with the American Baptist Churches of the Southwest and Transformation Ministries for over eleven years and then joining a global mission agency. He worked closely with churches in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, and Hawaii in the area of missions and stewardship, as well as marketing and public relations. His goal was to assist each church to fulfill its unique calling in the community and the larger Body of Christ. He also sought to help each believer become a fully committed follower of Jesus, particularly as expressed in service and stewardship. Steve and his wife Judy live in Chino Hills, CA and are members of Pomona First Baptist Church. They have two adult sons and a grandson. Matt, Kate, and Jasper (their grandson) live in San Francisco. Son Steven lives in Honolulu. RAINBOW ACRES • • • THE PROMISE • • • SUMMER 2012 • • • 09 EDITORIAL Chris Roush Appreciation Vice President Administration, Church Relations and Advancement “Please share with all the Rainbow Adopt-A-Rancher supporters what a blessing they are to us,” a parent said to me a few weeks ago. “We are just so grateful. I don’t know what we would do without Rainbow. It means so much to have our daughter there.” It was the second tearful conversation I had with a parent or guardian in just a matter of a month. Each expressed their appreciation for the generosity of our Rainbow circle of friends, and all they do to make Rainbow possible for families in need. In years where budgets are tight and the belt has already been pulled to the last notch, it would be easy to justify harsh decisions to shore up the bottom line. Rainbow is a business after all. But for 38 years, Rainbow has focused on finding the balance between business and ministry. As people of faith, decisions are rarely as simple as doing what is best for the bottom line. Thanks to you, our faithfilled family of support, we have been able to keep the promises made to families who have entrusted their loved ones to the care of Rainbow Acres. k n a h T ou! Y In his letter to the Philippians, the Apostle Paul wrote “I thank my God every time I remember you.” He goes on to thank them for their partnership in the Gospel. We at Rainbow are keenly aware of how Paul felt! We are indebted to each of you for your partnership in living out the Gospel message to serve as Christ would serve, and care for those whom Christ cares for. You are the hands of Christ to our Ranchers and to their families. On behalf of all of us – the staff, Ranchers, and families who love them – thank you! We appreciate all you do to help us keep the Rainbow Promise. I thank God every time I remember you! 10 • • • RAINBOW ACRES • • • THE PROMISE • • • SUMMER 2012 2011 ANNUAL REPORT Development Income 2011 DEVELOPMENT INCOME ORGANIZATION: 01% CORPORATION: 02% FOUNDATION: 10% Church $167,526 CHURCH: 11% Corporation/Company$ 32,744 INDIVIDUAL: 76% Foundation $146,579 Individual $1,129,741 Organization $17,023 TOTAL $1,493,613 2005 - 2011 DEVELOPMENT INCOME The Rainbow Acres financial statement and balance sheet have been submitted for the annual Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) audit, which will be completed in August. Earlier this year Matthew began working part-time for the National Park Service at Tuzigoot National Monument near Clarkdale, Arizona as their primary custodian. He cleans around the visitor center and straightens and dusts the shelves in the bookstore. He maintains landscaping, controls litter and helps with cultural demonstrations for visitors to this Sinagua ruin. Tourists are spellbound as a Park Ranger explains the hand-drill and Matthew shows how the simple device would have been used to drill holes in shells and wood to make items both decorative and useful in daily life. “With his experience in the Rainbow Acres greenhouses,” says Ranger Anne Worthington, “Matthew has been very helpful with the creation of the new Traditional Use Garden, where food and fiber plants are grown from seeds, much the same as the original inhabitants would have cultivated the fields below the old limestone pueblo.” Bill Osterhaus, Facility Manager at Montezuma Castle, Montezuma Well and Tuzigoot National Monument and Matthew’s supervisor says, “Matthew is outgoing, connects with visitors, and is a positive advocate for the Park Service. We are fortunate to have him.” His fellow employees like him and respect his work ethic, and eleven-year volunteer Don Gouirand agrees that they are “best friends” and share their lunches on the days he is there to act as docent from the top of the pueblo’s re-created roof. “What I like mostly about working here is that you have everything that you need, and Rancher Matthew Rubien good friends,” says Matthew sincerely. “God’s grace has sent me and it is such a blessing!” Matthew first saw Rainbow Acres when he was 16 years old, but his parents didn’t care for the arid landscape of Arizona, so they resisted the advice of good friend and founding board member Dr. Mace, because they knew they wanted to relocate from California to be near their son, wherever he lived. After trying other options, including another facility and even an apartment of his own for a time, Matthew’s parents are very pleased with the life he has at Rainbow Acres since he came in 2007. Five years of living in Arizona hasn’t changed their opinion of high desert scenery, but they’ve found that Flagstaff, just under an hour’s drive from Rainbow, has the tall pines and cooler weather they crave, so they hope to retire in that locale. “My husband and I feel really comfortable with him there,” his mother Debbie confides. “The staff is caring and he has made friends.” She is also thankful for Rainbow’s vocational program and happy for her son because of his position with the Park Service. “He and his father took me out to lunch for Mother’s Day and he was so proud that he could pay half of the bill!” Even with this wonderful job, there is a gap between what Matthew and his parents can pay and the actual costs of living, so they are grateful for all contributions to Rainbow’s AdoptA-Rancher program, to help the many Ranchers like Matthew meet their daily expenses. Matthew says his favorite kind of food is Chinese and his favorite color is red. He enjoys Star Wars movies and watching the Arizona Cardinals on television at his home in Evergreen House, and he will play basketball any time with anyone willing to dribble and shoot. During summer afternoons he likes to take a dip in the Rainbow swimming pool to cool off. When you visit, look for Matthew Rubien’s big infectious smile and out-thrust hand, wholeheartedly welcoming you to Rainbow Acres, or perhaps you have an urge to see the cultural heritage site at Tuzigoot National Monument, and you’ll see him there! RAINBOW ACRES • • • THE PROMISE • • • SUMMER 2012 • • • 29 ADOPT-A-RANCHER I ’m Never Moving Again! “I like it here,” Debbie Tedford says with her signature grin, “and I’m never moving again!” Debbie is 55 years old and has no living relatives, but knows she has a family at Rainbow. Her caregivers and program leaders agree that she has blossomed since arriving at the ranch in 2004, but especially in the last two years while participating in the Neurodevelopment program and in Total Equine Training at Rainbow Acres (T.E.t.R.A.). T.E.t.R.A. Equestrian Program Coordinator Amy Elmore comments, “Debbie takes her horsemanship seriously. She has taken many equine classes and has used that education, combined with horse handling skills, to be the Feed and Nutrition Manager for three rotations. This has spurred a wonderful leap forward in personal development, responsibility and pride in her abilities. She goes above and beyond the duties required by assisting other Ranchers, volunteering outside her assigned times, and an ongoing concern with the horses’ good health and proper nutrition. The Manager position has given Debbie the opportunity to work on delegation and interpersonal skills. She is learning appropriate methods for asking others to help with various tasks, and to be a calm assertive leader.” Amy continues, “Beyond the knowledge and accomplishments that Debbie has gained, it is the emotional bond between her and the horses that provides the greatest benefit. The unconditional love that horses share with their human handlers has become a source of strength for Debbie.” “I like the horses,” Debbie says. “Before I get off my horse I give her a hug with my hands on her shoulders and tell her she did a good job.” 30 • • • RAINBOW ACRES • • • THE PROMISE • • • SUMMER 2012 Debbie’s newfound confidence helps her maintain a job at a local fast food restaurant for a few hours each Saturday. She enjoys making it tidy and seeing all the people. When recently asked what her favorite place is at Rainbow her thoughtful answer was, “The weaving room. It’s so quiet. Everybody’s busy working.” She also creates beautiful pieces in Fine Arts classes (see related story in this issue) and participates in Hula lessons and other enrichment options. Debbie has very limited financial resources, with no family trust income or savings to support her. She works hard and is a part of the family at Rainbow. Your help is needed to cover the cost of living for Debbie Tedford and for other Ranchers like her. Please consider making a regular contribution to Adopt-A-Rancher. You may name a specific Rancher or give to the general fund to ensure that meaningful programs continue to make a difference in the lives of adults with developmental disabilities and cognitive challenges. Every person at Rainbow Acres appreciates your assistance!
