It is with great excitement that I write to you for the first time as Principal of Newton North High School. As I have settled into my new office I have taken note of the amazing amount of energy in the building. During the summer months the building has been filled with students from all over the city taking part in a variety of camps and summer programs while our custodial crew and administrative assistants have helped to prepare the building for the return of students and faculty for the 2016-‐2017 school year. While I have been learning a lot about Newton North I have also spent time perfecting my recipe for an upcoming hamburger competition (recipes are always welcome) and taken time to share the summer with my family. In order to ensure a smooth start to the school year I ask that you please review the following information: 1. Our summer information book is now posted at http://www.newton.k12.ma.us/nnhs. This booklet includes, but is not limited to: the Newton Public Schools 2016-‐2017 calendar, Newton North calendar, Deans letters, athletic information, calculator information, a subscription form for the Newtonite, the bus schedule, the NNHS Directory, school policies, PTSO welcome letter, school maps, student-‐drop-‐off/pick–up procedures, and student parking information. 2. Your current course list for September is now available through Skyward. You need to log into Skyward to access your list of courses for this year. We will hand out a full schedule on the first day of school to all students that will include teacher names. Please find the directions for logging into Skyward attached to this email. We communicate exclusively through email, so it is critical that you familiarize yourself with this system and make sure your contact information is correct. This is also the system we use to post report cards, the ‘Back to School Night’ schedule and mid-‐ term comments. If you have any trouble accessing the system, please contact your House Office or the Main Office. 3. Upon review of your list of courses, if you are missing a required course or believe your schedule contains an error, you should attend Arena Scheduling on Wednesday, August 31 from 2 pm to 4:30 pm in the cafeteria. We highly recommend that you attend on this date to deal with scheduling omissions and errors prior to the start of school. At Arena Scheduling, your counselor and the department heads will work with you to fix any problems with your schedule. You SHOULD come to Arena scheduling if: • You are missing a required course or graduation requirement. • You were scheduled for a course that you did not request. • You have a schedule that is unbalanced between semesters and therefore you have too few directed studies in one semester and too many in the other. You SHOULD NOT come to Arena scheduling if: • You were scheduled for an alternate course request. This is not considered an error and Letter 4 Principal’s your schedule will not be changed. • You have changed your mind about a course. The schedule for the first week of school is also attached to this email. Please take a minute to review this schedule, as it is different for the first week and includes the dates of school pictures. 5. Freshman Parent Night is scheduled for Thursday, September 15th at 7 pm. Mr. Turcotte, the Dean of Adams House and I look forward to welcoming all the parents/guardians of freshmen to North that night. During that evening you will get an opportunity to meet your child’s school counselor. 6. Our PTSO is working very hard to produce an accurate directory that will be available at ‘Back to School Night’ on Thursday, September 22nd. The PTSO is currently looking for families to update their contact information in the school directory via email. I would encourage you to join the PTSO, as it provides much needed support to our school. 7. For our ‘One School, One Question’ we are asking “Why do people put themselves in other people’s shoes, and what can we learn from that?” By clicking on the link below, you will find a list of recommended materials. We are asking that all students read or view at least one of the resources. http://www.newton.k12.ma.us/domain/1177 As with any leadership transition, we will be looking to capitalize on our strengths as a community and look to reflect and learn about how Newton North should move forward. Please help us incorporate your voice by participating in my “Introductory Survey”. Many of you have already participated in the survey, but we have extended the window to allow those of you who have not participated to share your perspective. I look forward to meeting you and working with you in supporting your Newton North student. Enjoy the rest of the summer! All the best, Henry Turner, Ed.D Principal Principal’s Letter 5 Skyward FamilyText and Student Access NNHS uses Skyward, a web-based parent portal that allows you to view student and school information online. One of the key goals of the Newton Public Schools is to improve home-school communication. It is our hope that this parent portal will open up communication by giving parents easy online access to information about their students. By logging into your account you will be able to see your student’s report cards, schedules and attendance records. We do not send home paper copies of these reports. Current families: Please access the parent portal system to view its features and update your contact information including your personal e-mail. This will assist us in contacting you for future electronic communication. New families: If you provided a valid e-mail address at registration you will receive your log-in and password information via e-mail in the next week or so. If you did not provide an e-mail address or you do not receive the information by August 26, please contact your child’s house office for assistance. If this is your first time logging in to the parent portal and you do not have your log-in information for Skyward, please contact your child’s house office or the main office with help resetting your password. 6 Skyward Portal Information Good to Know Places You Should Know... (For an in depth review of policies and procedures please refer to the Student Handbook.) Main Street: Is the large open space outside of the cafeteria. Homeroom: You are assigned a homeroom as a freshman and you will be in that homeroom for four years. You go to homeroom after the first block every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Nurse’s Office: Is located between the Main Office and the athletics area in room A109. Go there when you need medical aid, have to go home sick, or hand in physical forms for athletics. Tiger’s Loft: Is a restaurant located on the first floor near the Main Office. All of the food is cooked by students. You can eat there during second and third lunches. Things You Should Know... N-Rule: An N is given on your report card if you have not met the attendance requirements for a class during that marking period. If you earn two or more N’s in the same course, you may not receive credit for that course. During a term in which you earn an N you will also receive an academic grade on your report card. Lockers: Your locker is assigned to you by the house secretary at the beginning of the year, and will be yours for all four years. Bring in your own lock. You are responsible for the maintenance of your locker. Report any damage to your homeroom teacher and Dean. Study Halls and Unscheduled blocks: Freshmen are assigned to a study hall when they do not have a class. Second semester sophomores, juniors and seniors have open campus with approval of the Dean. Lunch Blocks: Lunch Blocks are split into three lunches every day. First lunch is generally for freshmen, second for Sophomores and third for juniors and seniors. Your teacher for that block will tell you which lunch to take. You’re absent, late or leaving school before classes are dismissed: The house office monitors all attendance. There are a few things we require you to do if you are absent, late or leaving school before classes are dismissed: • • If you are going to be absent, late or dismissed early, please have a parent/guardian call the house office by 10:00 a.m. leave your name and homeroom # on the answering machine. If a parent does not call, a parental note is required the day of a late arrival or early dismissal or the day following an absence. Without a note or phone call, the student will not be excused by the house office. Your teacher is delayed: Do not leave, wait for 10 minutes, and then send someone to a house office to see if the teacher is absent. A Dean will give further instructions. Someone else’s stuff is in your locker: Report it to your house office. If you have a problem with your schedule or you have other concerns about school in general: Talk to your guidance counselor, Dean or homeroom teacher. In my role as Dean, I will spend the next four years with the Class of 2020, working to help staff, students and families experience Newton North as a warm, welcoming environment where teaching, learning and emotional development thrive. For most students, and perhaps parents and guardians as well, transitioning to high school represents a major change. Please know that our faculty and staff are committed to helping a diverse group of students, with a range of learning styles, successfully navigate this transition and experience academic and social-‐emotional growth throughout high school. Teachers, counselors, and I will also expect and encourage students to work hard, take responsibility for their learning, advocate for their needs, and behave respectfully. I believe each and every student has the capacity to meet these expectations and have a successful experience at NNHS and beyond. Please review the policies and procedures outlined in the summer mailer. I would also like to call your attention to some important information, of which all students and families should be aware prior to the beginning of school. Attendance: To be successful in high school and beyond, students must develop consistent habits of attendance. NNHS staff expects students to report to classes, homeroom, and study halls on time, every day. Please read the school attendance policy and the N-‐rule, which are outlined in this mailer. Parents and guardians, please follow the school’s procedures for communicating about attendance. Adams House Office: For most issues you would have addressed in the Main Office in middle school, you will now use the Adams House office. Ms. Wong is the Adams House Administrative Assistant. She is able to help students and families address many issues, and if she cannot handle something herself, she can usually direct you to the proper person. Ms. Wong handles communication about students’ absences, dismissals, and late arrivals. She can be reached at helen_wong@newton.k12.ma.us or (617) 559-‐6310. In the event of an emergency, contact either the Main Office or Adams House. Building Relationships: Students, it is very important that we get to know each other, and with over 500 students in the class, I need your help. Feel free to visit my office to introduce yourself, and please come see me if you ever need help, regardless of whether the issue is related to school. If I am unavailable, let Ms. Wong know why you stopped by so that I can follow up with you. Parents and guardians, please call or e-‐mail me, if you ever have questions or concerns; my contact information is at the top of this letter. Study Halls: During all periods in which they are not assigned to a class, ninth graders are assigned study halls. If a class is cancelled due to staff absence, students report to the cafeteria. Freshmen must remain on campus at all times during school hours. X-‐block: This period occurs immediately after school on Mondays and Thursdays and provides opportunities for students to get extra help or meet with teachers. Teachers can require students to attend an X-‐block. Students may receive a detention, if they do not attend a teacher-‐assigned X-‐block meeting. Adams House Letter 9 Adam’s House Letter Locker Assignment: Students receive lockers assignments on the first day of school, and their assignment will remain the same for four years. Students may not share or swap lockers. If there is a problem with a locker, please contact Ms. Wong. Electronic Devices must be turned off and put away during classes. At 7:50am on Tuesday, September 6th, students should report to their homeroom, where we will begin school and our 9th grade orientation program. Photos for student IDs and the yearbook will be taken on the first day of school, so please plan accordingly. I am excited for school to begin. Enjoy the rest of summer, and I look forward to seeing you in September. This is it... senior year has arrived and the great class of 2017 will graduate! It is amazing how quickly four years have passed, I remember welcoming the Class of 2017 as freshmen. We have had three wonderful years together and I anticipate senior year being the best of them all. The seniors are the leaders of our school and it is my hope that they will help to create a school community that is respectful and inclusive of all students. I ask that you remember Dr. Price's challenge to you during our opening assembly of freshmen year, “How will you leave Newton North a better place than when you arrived?” Schedules: Seniors are expected to be enrolled in at least 24 blocks of classes. If seniors are committed to extracurricular activities that are sponsored and supervised by NNHS staff, they may enroll in 22 blocks. In order to graduate, students must earn a minimum of 100 total credits and meet distribution requirements by earning the following number of credits in each subject: English – 20, Math – 10, History & Social Sciences – 10, U.S. History – 5, Physical Science – 5, Biology – 5, Fine & Performing Arts (FPA) or Career, Vocational & Technical Education (CVTE) – 5, and Physical Education – 5. If you have questions about graduation requirements, please speak with your counselor. Attendance: Please be sure to review our attendance policies, including the N-‐rule. All students are required to attend homeroom. If a student is marked absent-‐unexcused from homeroom, an automated phone call will be sent to his/her home. Student Parking: All student-‐parking permits will be issued through the Newton Police Department. Obligations: Student obligations (text books, library books, etc.) from the previous three years should be taken care of by the end of September 2016. If you have questions about obligations, feel free to contact the house office. Mrs. Tobin and I look forward to continuing our work with your family in the upcoming school year. Communication between home and school is essential in order to support all students. Our collaboration will help your child to have a successful senior year. Also, if you are not already on the Barry House e-‐mail list, please contact Mrs. Tobin at 617-‐559-‐6320 or Karen_Tobin@newton.k12.ma.us. While students may not always be required to stay, it is the expectation of the school that students will participate as needed or when asked. Electronic Devices: All devices must be turned off and put away during classes. Students are not permitted to check voice mail, text messages, e-‐mail, play games, or access any social media sites during class time. Neglecting to follow this rule may result in the device being confiscated until the end of the day, an after school consequence, or a meeting with a parent/guardian. Last school year we started to get to know each other and I really look forward to developing our relationships. My door is always open and I strongly request you stop in and say hello. I hope you really enjoy the next few weeks of summer and I can’t wait to see you on the 6th! Sincerely, Scott Heslin Dean Scott Heslin Beals House Letter 13 Riley House Letter Michelle Stauss Leah Castellano Dean Administrative Assistant michelle_stauss@newton.k12.ma.us leah_castellano@newton.k12.ma.us Dear Students and Families of the Class of 2018, I hope this letter finds you in good spirits, enjoying summertime. I am excited to continue my work with such a fanstastic group of students and and I look forward to junior year. As juniors, I expect that you will continue to show respect for self and others and that you will begin to assume a greater leadership role in the building. I also hope you will continue to take pride in your academics and participate in the various extra-‐curricular activities offered here at North. Take a risk and try something new! This is an important year for you! Taking SATs, engaging in the college application process and attending fun events are key parts of your junior year. This year, like last year, students who have solid attendance, citizenship, and academics (earning a C-‐ or higher in a minimum of 24 blocks of structured learning time) will be able to earn the open campus privilege with your Dean’s approval. If you earn open campus, you may leave campus. However, if you choose to remain on campus, the library, cafeteria, and/or help labs will be open. We assign students who do not earn open campus privileges to a focused study hall during open blocks. Please review the information in this booklet, including our attendance policy, our Student Handbook, and the Students’ Rights and Responsibilities Handbook for 2016-‐2017. Visiting our website on a regular basis will help you to keep current, too. Ms. Castellano and I look forward to continuing our work with your family. Please keep in touch with any updates about your child/family that would help us better support you/your child: leah_castellano@newton.k12.ma.us and michelle_stauss@newton.k12.ma.us Consistent communication is critical to the efforts we share between home and school to best support our students. And, it is important to me that we continue getting to know each other so stop by and say hello when you return from vacation. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Sincerely, Michelle Stauss 14 Riley House Letter Attendance Policies What to do if… You’re absent, late or leaving school before classes are dismissed? Notify your house office. See attendance section for details. Attendance Policies and Procedures Attendance Teachers maintain records of student attendance in each of their classes. In addition, one period each day is considered the daily attendance period. If you are absent during the daily attendance period, an automated phone call will be made to your home, indicating that you are absent from school. Daily attendance is taken at the following times: Monday: C-block Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: homeroom Friday: B-block. Parents or guardians are required to call the house office to excuse any absences by 10am on the day of an absence. Tardy to School • • Dismissal If you arrive to school late, your parent or guardian should call the house office and indicate your expected time of arrival. You may also bring a note to the house office with your time of arrival. Either way, you must report to the house office when you arrive to school. Do not bring notes to your teacher. Students arriving late without a note or parent phone call should go directly to class. The house office will not provide an excused note. • • • • When a student needs to be dismissed from school early, a parent/guardian must call the house office or the student must bring a note from home to the house office prior to the dismissal. Otherwise the absence is considered unexcused. The house secretary will provide a dismissal slip. If you do not get a dismissal slip prior to leaving the school, your absence will be considered unexcused. Students who return to school after being dismissed must check in with the house office, where they will receive an attendance slip. If you are ill, the school nurse should dismiss you. Please bring all notes to the house office. If the secretary is unavailable, you may drop the note off in the box provided. Please be sure your name, the date and the time of arrival are written clearly across the top. Failure to follow the attendance procedures may jeopardize course credit. Please refer to the Student Handbook for more information regarding the N-rule and receiving course credit. Thank you for your cooperation. Attendance Policies 15 Open Campus Freshman and first semester sophomores DO NOT have open campus privileges and are not permitted to be outside the school building without adult supervision during the school day. They are assigned students during their unscheduled blocks. Students are expected to bring appropriate materials for independent study. Regular and punctual attendance is expected. Second semester sophomores and all juniors who demonstrate good citizenship and are in good academic standing (grades of C- or higher) are eligible for open campus upon Dean approval. These students may go to the cafeteria or to the library, or they may work with a teacher in a supervised setting or leave the school grounds. Seniors with open campus privileges are not assigned during their unscheduled blocks and may go to the cafeteria, library or leave school grounds. Students with open campus may not congregate near classrooms, hallways or other unauthorized areas while classes are in session. We ask our students to be respectful of our neighborhoods and not to congregate in nearby yards and/or neighboring streets, in particular, the areas of Blithedale Street, Kimball Terrace, Elm Road, Lowell Avenue, Hull Street and Dexter Road. The Dean or parents/guardians can deny or revoke open campus privileges at any time. Open campus is an opt-out program and parents/guardians should contact their student’s dean if they are interested in opting-out. Smoking: According to the Newton Public Schools’ 2016-2017 Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook, the district’s tobacco policy is as follows: In accordance with G.L. c. 71 §2A, it is the policy of the Newton Public Schools to prohibit the use of all tobacco products within all school facilities, on all school grounds, and on all school buses by any individual, including school personnel. In addition, at Newton North High School, there are further restrictions as specified in the “Smoke Free Zone Ordinance” passed by the City Council on December 17, 2007. Section 20-7: Smoking Prohibited-Sidewalks and Other Public Property a) No person shall smoke, possess or carry a lighted or smoldering cigarette, cigar, or pipe of any kind or any other smoking article at the following locations: (excerpt) 1) Upon the sidewalk at Albemarle… 2) Upon the sidewalk or other public property within a nine hundred (900) foot perimeter of the property line of Newton North School grounds. 16 Open Campus Regular School Communication Philosophy Communication between home and school fosters an environment that supports the development of life-long, independent learners. We believe that, as young adults, our students assume primary responsibility to account for their actions, to communicate regularly with their teachers, and to seek out school personnel directly for assistance and problem resolution. As students assume more responsibility for themselves, we believe that they can and should be included in communications and meetings, increasing their commitment to their own progress as independent learners and securing their investment in the outcomes of such collaborations. Together we share the challenge of fostering this growth in independence as students move through their time at Newton North. We recognize this can sometimes be a difficult process - a time when young adults may struggle to find this independence, and, to that end, there are many adults in the building to help them. Support The following adults are available to assist your child at school: Teachers, guidance counselors, deans, coaches, and after-school activity advisors special education liaisons (if applicable). Sharing of information between home and school develops this supportive relationship further by celebrating successes, discussing areas of need, and communicating information about other situations (in and out of school) which may impact a student’s learning. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Guidelines Students benefit when faculty, staff and parents communicate respectfully and effectively. Teachers convey their preferred communication form at the start of courses (email or phone). Parents and school staff acknowledge the volume of information that circulates each day and are respectful of time demands. Parents and school staff act respectfully at meetings and forums and are considerate of speakers in asking questions and making comments. Specific concerns should be addressed to the classroom teacher first. To respect everyone’s time and commitments, communication responses within two business days are recommended. Beyond the regular school communications, families of students who need additional support may contact a classroom teacher. Concerns that cannot be resolved within two or three communication exchanges with the classroom teacher may warrant additional consultation, possibly involving department chairs or deans in more complex situations. When these exchanges do not lead to quick resolution of concerns, families and school personnel may desire phone or in-person meetings for further discussion. Regular School Communication 17 Regular School Communication Regular School Communication The following scheduled meetings and communications occur regularly: Back-to-School Night (September) Report Cards (November, January, April & June) available through Skyward Family Access (see access info on next page) Parent Conferences (December) Emails from Deans & Principal Emails and website updates from PTSO School website Special Education documents and meetings Newtonite School Newspaper – available on-line Education Team Conferences Educational Team Conferences (ETCs) are available for students who are struggling due to academic and/ or emotional difficulties. Meetings include the student, guardian(s), counselor, teachers, and, at times, dean in order to share information, express specific concerns, and create an action plan for support. Anyone may request an ETC; scheduling is handled by the counselor and guardian(s), with notification generated by the house secretary. 18 Regular School Communication Supports Available to All Students Please contact your child’s counselor or dean regarding any of these programs. Help Room, located in room 242 The Help Room offers students academic support in every major content area. Each period, a teacher from one specific department is assigned to the Help Room. A schedule is posted on the Help Room door so that students can see when there is a teacher available from the department in which they need assistance. Students may go to the Help Room during their study or free periods. Focused Study, located in room 240 Focused Study Halls are comprised of small groups of students who need extra support in one or more of their classes. A Focused Study has fewer students than a Directed Study, and a teacher is available to provide academic guidance. Focused Studies meet next door to the Help Room. In small studies, it is easier for deans, teachers and counselors to track student attendance and monitor academic progress. Peer Tutoring The Peer Tutoring Program pairs 9th and 10th graders with upperclassmen to get help in specific subject areas. Students commit to Peer Tutoring for a semester. The tutoring session replaces a study hall, so attendance is mandatory. Tutors are selected after being recommended and interviewed by teachers. Teachers may also recommend students be tutored in the program. PM Program The PM program meets for 2 hours after school on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Newton North staff serves as the tutors, and they provide support with homework completion, test and quiz preparation, time management, and organization. In some cases, students choose whether to attend the program, or students may be mandated to attend by parents and deans. After School Program The After School Program is a free tutoring program designed to help students take ownership of their education, increase their self-confidence, and improve their academic performance. The program typically begins in late September and is held on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:00pm - 4:30pm. The program helps students focus on homework completion, test/quiz preparation, and organizing short-term and long-term assignments in a supportive environment. School staff serve as small-group tutors who assist students with assignments, monitor work production and student attendance, and also communicate with classroom teachers, students and families. School staff and parents may agree that a student’s participation in the program be mandatory. For these students, deans monitor attendance and follow up with students and families if a student has an unexcused absence from the program. These installations will NOT be located in classrooms, office areas, locker rooms or bathrooms. The purpose of these installations is to monitor public areas where the potential for criminal activity is greatest (false fire alarm pulls, graffiti, theft, etc.). The cameras will only monitor passage in and out of these areas. This will allow administration to review the activity in the immediate public area shortly before and after the crime took place, reducing the number of potential people to interview. The recording, viewing and storage of the recorded data will follow the attached protocol. (Attachment-Protocol for Security Camera Recorded Data). Protocol for Security Camera Recorded Data Approved by School Committee 6/14/10 Security camera recordings will be viewable in each building by authorized designees only. Camera Placement: Camera installations will only be located in public areas such as hallways, athletic areas, large public gathering spaces, parking lots and public walkways. Th e purpose of these installations is to monitor public areas where the potential for criminal activity is greatest (false fire alarm pulls, graffiti, vandalism, backpack and personal belonging theft, etc.). The cameras shall not be placed in areas where there may be a reasonable expectation of privacy by staff and students (e.g. rest rooms, locker rooms, private offices, department offices, conference rooms, staff lounges). Signage and Notification: Signs will be posted in public entryways to the buildings and at other conspicuous locations informing persons that the building and grounds may be under video surveillance. The posted signs will read: Surveillance Cameras in Use. The District shall notify students, staff and the general public that video surveillance will occur on school property through use of the signage and other appropriate notifications including a notice in the student handbook. Limited Access to Recordings: • The Superintendent or his/her expressly authorized designee shall oversee video surveillance. • Only individuals authorized by the Superintendent or his/her designee may view the surveillance recordings. • Only the principal and/or superintendent will decide when and if viewing needs to occur. • Police access will be determined in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding with the Newton Police Department. Viewing: • There will be no monitoring of live recordings. • Reviewing the recordings will occur only when a suspected crime is committed inside or outside the building (e.g. vandalism, graffiti, etc.). • Viewing the data is to be performed by a minimum of two administrators that have been expressly authorized to do so by the principal. • A log book shall include the following details: the persons viewing the data, what event triggered the 28 Surveillance Camera Policy Surveillance Camera Policy viewing, the date/time viewed, what was found on the recording, whether the data was copied or forwarded, and what consequences were imposed as a result of the recorded information. • Information obtained through video surveillance may only be used for disciplinary investigations, security or law enforcement purposes. No sound is to be monitored or recorded in connection with the video surveillance system. • Surveillance system misuse shall be addressed on a case-by-case basis by the District. Short Term Data Storage: • Video recordings (with the exception of those segments that evidence a crime being committed) will be maintained for a maximum of fourteen (14) consecutive days and then deleted. All such recordings shall be treated as confidential and shall not be released to individuals or agencies outside of the District except through subpoena or other court order requiring such release. • Any law enforcement agency may be provided with a duplicate of the recorded materials in conjunction with an ongoing investigation by that agency. Notification to the Superintendent’s office shall take place for each duplication of data. Surveillance Camera Policy 29 Summer Reminders from the School Nurse Maureen Pursley Debbie Donovan 617-559-6401 A109 Medication Order Reminder: All medication orders expire at the end of the school year. If you are visiting your child’s health care provider during the summer, consider requesting a new medication order for the school nurse. All medication, prescription or over-the-counter, requires an order. The Medication Permission Form and the Medication Policy are both available online at http://newtonma.gov/gov/health/school.asp Medication Pick-Up: Parents of students who have medication stored in the health room should pick it up by the last day of school, June 19. All medication (pills, epi-pens, inhalers, etc.) not picked up will be discarded. Please plan ahead to pick medication up so it is not wasted! Medication may not be carried home by the student - it must be picked up by a parent. School nurses will not be available after June 19 to return medication to families. (Last day of school may be extended depending on the number of snow days needed.) Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Available: The results of the latest Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) administered to Newton middle and high school students every two years since 1998 are now available. The survey is largely based on a similar survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Questions on the anonymous and confidential survey focused on issues such as substance abuse, violence and safety, as well as physical and mental health. Highlights of this year’s survey include a continued decline in tobacco use among Newton Youth, a decrease in bullying, but a slight increase in alcohol use in reports of students who are worried about school, social and appearance issues. For more information about the survey, how it is administered, how the data can be interpreted, and a summary of the results, visit the Health and Human Services Department website at www.newtonma.gov/gov/health Shoo the Flu!: Seasonal influenza vaccine will be offered this fall during the school day to students and employees. Both the flu shot and the nasal spray flu vaccine will be available to all students in kindergarten through grade 12, by parental consent only. Consent and screening forms will be posted at www.newton. ma.gov/flu by mid-September in preparation for the October/November clinics. Insurance information will be requested, but all students are welcome to receive the vaccine at no charge. The flu clinic date for Newton North High School will be November 17, 2016. Forms (available midSeptember) will be due to the school nurse by November 15th. This schedule is confirmed unless the flu vaccine supply is delayed, in which case the school nurse will notify families of an alternative date once the vaccine arrives. Have a happy and healthy summer! Maureen Pursley Maureen Pursley 30 Summer Reminders from the School Nurse Emergency Response and Crisis Management What does Newton Public Schools currently do to ensure safety and security within its schools and the district? Citywide Safety Team Newton Public Schools has a district safety team responsible for drafting emergency policy and procedures, training staff, and assembling to determine a course of action in times of citywide crisis. The team meets monthly and includes representatives from the city, school nursing staff, police department, school department, experienced psychologists, and school and community based mental health professionals. School Specific Safety Teams Each individual school also has a safety team that includes administrators, teachers, staff and parents from that school. The team meets periodically throughout the year to review procedures and plan for emergency readiness. The school safety team also meets as needed to evaluate and respond to challenging community situations, plan next steps and offer support to children, parents and staff. Emergency Procedures The district has established protocols for addressing a range of crises and emergencies. Each school and classroom has a School and Emergency Response flip book with step-by-step directions for responding to a variety of situations. Staff is trained to handle these situations and regularly practice procedures such as evacuation, shelter in place, and lockdown. Evacuation Schools practice fire drills a minimum of four times a year. Students and staff quickly exit the school building if there is a hazard inside such as a fire, bomb threat, or chemical spill. Each school has an off-site evacuation location that they can walk to in the event of a prolonged evacuation. The school principal, administrators and the police department are informed and assist in the practice. Bus evacuation is also practiced at least once a year in the K-12 levels (three times a year at the elementary level.) Safety Improvements Grants from the federal government have allowed Newton Public Schools to implement a number of security and safety improvements including shades on classroom windows, locks on classroom doors and keyless entry to buildings for staff. A two- year grant to the Newton Police Department, called Secure Our Schools, funded security cameras at the high schools, replacement of broken exterior doors, and installation of emergency and exterior lighting. We continue to work closely with the police department on safety and security measures and seek grant support for security upgrades. Training and Resources for Staff Each year, staff are trained in Emergency Procedures to ensure that new principals and staff, as well as veteran staff, are prepared to handle any emergency. At the beginning of the year, administrators review with their staff emergency procedures for their school. The Readiness and Emergency Management grant Newton Public Schools received a few years ago supported the development of standard protocols, which are available in each classroom. Staff participate in drills and exercises to practice emergency response. The Safe Schools Healthy Students grant from the US Department of Education not only funded safety upgrades in the buildings but also provided significant mental health training for staff and parents over the last four years. Emergency Response and Crisis Management 31 Emergency and Crisis Management How does Newton Public Schools communicate in the event of a crisis or emergency? Newton Public Schools is currently using Skylert from SchoolMessenger, a leading community notification system, to provide a quick alert messaging service for families and staff. Skylert allows us to communicate with families and staff 24-hours a day, in multiple languages, using voice messages, e-mail, and more. Skylert closely integrates with Skyward, Newton’s Student Information System. Parents can update their contact information through Family Access. If I’m concerned that I’m not receiving messages from the school, what can I do? To verify and update your contact information as well as select options on how you would like to be notified in the vent of an emergency, please log into Skyward’s Family Access and click on the Skylert tab. Alternatively, please contact your child’s school to confirm that the correct information is entered into Skyward, our Student Information System. What Mental Health Resources are available within the Newton Public Schools? In Newton Public Schools, we value students’ social and emotional learning, in addition to academic learning. This dual emphasis is shared by all staff who work in all of our schools. In addition, we are currently implementing a multi-year federal School Climate Transformation grant focused on increasing school resources and supporting social and emotional learning. Who does Newton Public Schools partner with to ensure community safety? The schools and community together offer a broad range of programs and therapeutic services to support students and community members in need. We have ongoing partnerships with many organizations, including: • • • • • • • Riverside Trauma Center: http://riversidetraumacenter.org Newton-Wellesley Hospital: http://www.nwh.org Freedman Center for Child and Family Development at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology: http://www.mspp.edu/community/freedman-center/ Armstrong EMT: http://armstrongambulance.com The City of Newton: http://www.newtonma.gov, including: ○ Citywide Safety Team ○ Newton Police - School Resource Officers ○ Newton Fire Department ○ Newton Health and Human Services If I have questions or concerns about safety and security at Newton Public Schools (or in general), how can I ask or share them? Start by emailing or contacting your child’s school. The staff should be able to answer your questions and if not, will direct you to the proper channels to share your ideas or concerns. 32 Emergency Response and Crisis Management NNHS Half-Day Half Day ScheduleSchedules Fall 2016 Fall 2016 WeekofSeptember2630 WeekofOctober31– November4 WeekofNov.21-23 PDHalfDay9/29/26 PDHalfDay11/3/16 Wednesday11/23/16 A2(long):7:50-9:00am B2:9:05-10:00am E2:10:05-11:00am Thanksgiving Thursday9/29/26: A3:7:50-8:45am Homeroom(Anti-Bullying Lesson):8:50-9:45am D4(long):9:50-11:00am Thursday11/3/16 A3:7:50-8:45am C3:8:50-9:45am E3(long):9:50-11:00am WeekofDecember5-9 Draft7/14/16 Tuesday12/6/16 NOF2Block Thursday12/8/16 B3(long):7:50-9:00am C3:9:05-10:00am D4:10:05-11:00am ParentConferences& PDHalfDay12/8/16 Half Day Schedule Fall 2016 33 Important Athletic Information Tom Giusti Donna Benoit Athletic DirectorAdministrative Assistant tom_giusti@newton.k12.ma.us donna_benoit@newton.k12.ma.us June 2016 Welcome to the Newton North Athletic Department. IMPORTANT CALCULATOR INFORMATION Dear Parent or Guardian, There are many innovations in the use of technology in mathematics education. At Newton North one of the tools we use in all courses is a calculator. Students are expected to bring a calculator to class as part of their materials. Some important notes regarding calculators: • Most teachers do not allow students to use their cell phones as calculators in class. • For parents/guardians of incoming freshmen, it may behoove you to look ahead in your child’s math sequence below to see what calculator will be required in grades 10-12 (in order to avoid purchasing multiple calculators during the four years). • The NNHS math department does not allow the TI-Inspire, and Casio graphing calculators are not recommended. • Our graphing calculators of choice, and the ones that teachers use for demonstration, are: TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus Silver Edition or TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition. o o The TI-83 Plus is acceptable as well, though it is not as highly recommended (Your student may feel at a disadvantage using the TI-83 since it’s operating system is no longer supported/updated by the company and does not use the same student-friendly notation features of the newer TI-84). Students who have alternative graphing calculators will be responsible for learning how to use them on their own. • Our scientific calculator of choice is the TI-30XS. It is the best one on the market! (Importantly, this calculator has a DATA button with statistical features that are essential for our units on Data and Statistics in all courses from Freshman-Senior year) • Please note that calculators are also required for all science and engineering classes at NNHS. Students may use either a scientific or graphing calculator in his/her science class. Students must bring their calculator to science class every day. Thus, a calculator is a doubly important school supply for your child. • You may find used calculators or calculators on sale on the Internet (e.g. Craigslist, ebay). The earlier you look, the better your chances are of finding a good deal. • If it is a problem for a student to purchase a calculator of his/her own, we would encourage the student to contact his/her math teacher during the first week of school so that we can help. You may also call or email me directly to assist in this manner. TURN OVER TO SEE A LIST OF OUR RECOMMENDED CALCULATORS BY COURSE. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Newton PAC for Special Education 43 Newton PAC forText Special Education What is NewtonPAC? NewtonPAC provides advocacy, information, and community connection for Newton families whose children receive special education services. We are an all-volunteer group that welcomes parents, educators, providers, and interested community members. We meet regularly with school administrators to discuss services, policies and programs, bringing input and concerns from parents, and are actively involved in School Committee matters. Our goal is to work collaboratively with administrators and staff to continually improve the experience of students, parents, and staff in supporting children in need of special education services. NewtonPAC holds monthly meetings that offer opportunities to network with other parents, with school staff, and with outside speakers. The meetings offer information about Newton’s current education programs and about topics of particular interest to NewtonPAC families, such as disability law, transition planning, and specific disabilities. At NewtonPAC events and in our online community we connect with each other to recommend resources and share experiences. NewtonPAC liaisons to the PTO in each Newton school increase awareness of special education in the school community and provide a neighborhood contact for our members. Check on our website or in your school’s directory for the name of your school’s NewtonPAC representative. We welcome you into our group to attend any of our monthly meetings, to seek or offer advice and information, to join our email group, or to volunteer. By working together, we can effectively advocate for our children to ensure quality education services.
