inter just won’t go away. The anticipation of
Opening Breakfast is again being tempered
by the forecast, even for those of us that are from
the northern climates. Hopefully, warmer temperatures will soon be here and we will begin to
enjoy spring weather. One good sign, Lentz tells
me the tulips are ready to bloom, a sure sign of
changing weather.
In spite of the weather the club has been active.
Fitness classes have been well attended and the
spin bikes have been a great addition to our
program. Speaking of fitness, over the winter club
members Dr. Robert Posner, Dr. Donald Brideau
and Nicole Brown volunteered their time to do
seminars on health and wellness. I want to thank
each of these professionals for offering to put
these seminars together. Members that attended
were treated to energetic and informative
presentations.
The March Board meeting, as usual, concentrated
on budgeting for the upcoming year. With increasing costs of operations, including cost of living
increases for our employees, the Board voted a
dues increase for the upcoming year. The increase
will be 3% for Active members ($14.00) and a
proportional increase for other classes of membership. It is important for the Board to maintain
and improve the high level of service that we
currently enjoy.
Our program to increase membership is proving
to be successful. During March we had five new
members join and numerous inquiries prompted

2015 3-Day Member/
Guest Tournament
By Scott Flood
Okay, here’s a quick recap of what we covered
last month on the 2015 3-Day Member/Guest
Tournament: The tournament dates are June 25th
– 27th, 2015, our overall theme will be Las Vegas
and our main special tee gift will be Adidas Adipower
Boost Golf Shoes.
Now, for the new stuff. Your committee has thrown in a
few new wrinkles. No, not a white tiger petting zoo nor
facial tattoos. You have to provide those on your own.
At the end of the second match on Thursday, we’ll be
holding our First Annual “Gill’s Skills” competition.
You and your partner will get to participate in a chipping
contest, a putting contest, and a driving contest that
combines accuracy and length, all for fabulous cash or
prizes. (Side action is encouraged, but remember, bet
with your head, not over it.)
Through Draconian efficiency measures, Herculean
planning efforts, and Einsteinian mathematical calculations, the committee was able to keep the price for the
weekend the same as last year! So, for a mere $850,
you get:
• 4 rounds of guest golf (includes practice round)
• 3 rounds of cart fees
• Gill’s Skills
• In-flight shootout
• Two pairs of the latest golf shoes (check out the
MSRP on these babies, I dare you)
• 6 breakfasts
• 6 lunches
• 8 dinners

Golf Pro’s Pointers
By Josh Tremblay, PGA
April features a few events that you surely do not want
to miss! The first is the Masters Par 3 Tourney on
Wednesday, April 8th. This event is always a blast and
tee-times will run from 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. with the
back nine set up as a Par 3 course with some fun and
challenging approaches. Towards the end of the month
we have the Member/Member Championship on
Saturday, April 25th. The participating teams in the
Member/Member will also be eligible to participate in
an optional 9-hole Alternate Shot event on Friday evening, April 24th. Finally, we’re taking a fresh approach
to what used to be known as the “Half-Days.” In 2015,
we’ve cut back on the number of these events to just
two (the first being Wednesday, April 29th) and there
will no longer be a member-member division, only
member-guest. The Spring and Summer One-Day
Member/Guests will feature changes to the menu
offerings and we think that it will all combine for a
special day for you to show off your club to guests.
The changes I’ve just outlined do not apply to the Bob
Bruce Memorial in October which will still have both
a member-member division and a member-guest
division.
Now that Spring is officially upon us, I need to do some
“spring cleaning” and remind everyone of some things
that come up often throughout the season:
• Starting with play for Sunday, March 29th, we’ll
begin using the Tee-Time Lottery for Weekend
and Holiday Requests. Members must make their
requests by noon on Wednesday and may do so
online through the club website, under quick links
and select “Request Tee Time.” A member must
have at least three players to make a valid request
for weekend tee-times. If you are a single or a
twosome, please email me at josh@sgccva.org by
Wednesday at noon and I will do my best to place
you in a group, if possible.
• If you are bringing guests to the club to play a
round of golf, please help us out by providing
their first and last names when booking the teetime. This is helpful for tracking reasons and also
allows us to provide more personal service to your
guests.
• Our range is quite busy during the golf season
and the volume of lessons taken by members has
increased. Appointments are made for lessons and
we must give lessons priority for utilizing a range
spot when needed. Your cooperation and understanding on this matter is appreciated!
• For those of you who own or use a pull-cart,
please remember that pull carts are not to be
taken between greens and their associated bunkers, should be kept at least 20 feet from the
edge of the green, and kept off tee boxes. Also,
please do not leave your pull carts at the club
overnight.
• Our greens are some of the best in the area and
we need to take care of them to keep them that
way. Please take the time to fix your ball mark and
when possible try to fix one more as well!
• An appropriate pace of play for our club is less than
4 hours and 15 minutes. We will be utilizing the
Checkpoint system for our Club Tournaments. Our
rangers will do their best to help golfers by looking for lost balls and fore-caddying to help groups
catch up. Slower groups should step-aside to let
faster groups play through. A group that can’t keep
pace with the field may be asked to skip a hole.
Groups that are unable to maintain an appropriate
pace will receive a letter from the Golf Committee
and face temporary tee-time restrictions.
Here are just a few of the instructional offerings coming
up in April…sign up on the website!

Golf Course Report
By Lentz Wheeler, Golf Course Superintendent
Spring is finally here...at least according to the calendar. We are obviously
behind, but with each passing day
the power of spring pushes winter
further from our memory. We have
so much on our plate the workload is
daunting. We will take it one day at a
time and appreciate your patience with the course as it
grows out of the long winter.
The biggest concern entering the year is the amount
of annual bluegrass that has returned in some of our
fairways and rough. We have begun working with Darin
Bevard of the USGA Green Section to revise programs
that will encourage bent over annual bluegrass. We will
keep the membership advised of our progress. The
cool wet spring has made it particularly difficult getting
equipment out on the course but warmer weather is
on the way and the bent should begin to grow. Annual
bluegrass thrives in cool weather while the bent favors
warmer temperatures. Things will improve rapidly once
decent weather arrives.
Our Rainbird Irrigation system is awesome and support from our distributor is second to none. We are
receiving an upgrade to our system that will involve
contractors working on all the sprinklers throughout
the course. This upgrade calls for replacing all the IC
modules (integrated circuit). Rainbird wants to make
it right! There is no cost to the club and there will be
minimal interference during this process. This upgrade
is expected to take two weeks.

Couples Golf
Congratulations to SGCC Member Kimberly
Campbell on the publication of the first novel
in her Triple Crown Trilogy, The Calm Before
the Storm.
Our first outing will be a special, 18-hole couples event
on Sunday, May 3rd with tee-times reserved for
foursomes from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. – the format will be
best ball of each couple. Our first Friday evening, 9-hole
event will be a step-aside scramble the following Friday,
May 8th, starting at 5:00 p.m. You can form your own
foursome or the Pro Shop will pair you up with another
couple. Sign up in person, over the phone, or on-line.
Kudos to the winners from last month’s
Trivia Night. First place went to The Hurley
Special consisting of April and Tom Hurley,
Michael Thimblin, Christina Folz, and Rich
Prisinzano. Don and Jane Moffett, Brian
Moffett, and Lindsey Eiriksson came together
to form ...And in First Place and take second
place. Thank you to Scott and Mollie Flood
for their time and effort in planning and hosting such a great competition. If you want to put
your knowledge to the test, join us this month
on Friday, April 17th and find out just how
much you know!

Mark your calendars! It’s almost
time for Couples Golf to start.
Once the weather gets warmer
and the days get longer we’ll be
out on the course having some
great shots and lots of fun.
The complete list of Friday and Sunday events is already
posted in the Couples portion of the club website. Just
scroll down to the list of competitions and you can preview the entire year. We’ve adjusted the games slightly
from 2014 based on your feedback – if you’ve found a
new, interesting format, please let either Louise, Josh,
or John know and we’ll try to include it in this year’s
schedule. Remember, couples is a great way to celebrate the end of the week and to expand your circle of
friends at Springfield!
April 2015
Dropping Zones
By Lynn Blasch
Many courses which have water hazards close to greens
will establish a dropping zone for that hole in order
to give the player an option to Rule 26, the Water
Hazard rule. Springfield is one of those courses: we
have dropping zones on holes 4 and 11. How do they
work? Here’s the answer:
If a ball is in or it is known or virtually certain that a ball
that has not been found is in the water hazard on hole
#11, the player may (1) proceed under Rule 26 (the
water hazard rule) or (2) as an additional option, drop a
ball, under penalty of one stroke, in the dropping zone.
•the point where the original ball last crossed the
margin of the water hazard or lateral water hazard
(Rule 26-1).
As you can see, unless your first drop misses the dropping zone entirely, and since the ball can roll up to two
club-lengths in any direction (provision (f) above) it is
hard to imagine a need to ever redrop in our dropping
zones. You might end up in someone else’s divot hole,
but that’s just bad luck and not a reason to redrop.
On hole #4, the dropping zone is an option for any ball
which is in the flower bed above and to the right of the
cart path, and for any ball which has been played from
the green tees and is in the water hazard.
Well, you ask, where did I find all this information?
Open your Rules of Golf book, go way to the back and
find Appendix I, Part B 8. Dropping Zones. What? Don’t
have a Rules book yet? The Rolex Corporation has
underwritten the cost of publishing the books, so you
can stop by our pro shop and pick up your free copy.
Here’s the interesting part: there are seven provisions
that apply when dropping and redropping the ball.
3-Day Member-Guest
(a) The player does not have to stand within the dropping zone when dropping the ball.
(b) The dropped ball must first strike a part of the
course within the dropping zone.
(c) If the dropping zone is defined by a line, the line is
within the dropping zone.
(d) The dropped ball does not have to come to rest
within the dropping zone.
(e) The dropped ball must be redropped if it rolls and
comes to rest in a position covered by Rule 20-2c
(i-vi). (you can look that up, but it is VERY unlikely
to happen here at Springfield)
(f) The dropped ball may roll nearer the hole than the
spot where it first struck a part of the course, provided it comes to rest within two club-lengths of
that spot and not into any of the positions covered
by (e).
(g) Subject to the provisions of (e) and (f), the dropped
ball may roll and come to rest nearer the hole than:

The 2015 Season is Here! April Fools Day! No, it is

really looking forward to a triumph over their Blue

they will have to keep the trophy until the fall bash.
Well, we’ll just have to see!

Note that a new team, Belmont, has joined
the league and is on our docket. Our byes
this season will be CC of Fairfax and A/N
Fairfax.”
The biggest changes for the 2015 season were succinctly spelled out by team captain Walt Szczypinski
at our March 19th meeting as well as in a previous
email:
“After a successful year or introducing online
signups for our matches, it is efficient and
practical to go solely with the online
signup method this season. Hence, paper
signup sheets in the locker room will no
longer be used. As in the past, email and/
or phone calls to the captains will be our
fallback method to sign up for a match. This
should simplify the process for players and
captains alike.
The turnout for the March 19th Retirees Sign Up
Meeting was excellent. We had thirty-sevenRed
team members, thirty-two Blues, and twelve new
or returning members (after years away), for a
total of eighty-one. The enthusiasm of the team
was even better than the turnout. With everyone
keyed up for a new season and the course open
after the cold, icy winter, the start of actual play
couldn’t get here soon enough. Game on!
After discussion with last year’s 9 Hole
Challenge coordinators, the captains, several
Retiree players at random, and the Head Pro
we have decided to forego the 9 Hole
Challenge (Senior Mixed Play) format this
season. However, during those Thursdays on
which the Springfield Retirees have an AWAY
While we didn’t know it until later in the day, Don
Fredericksen passed at 7:15 a.m. on the Retirees
registration day. Like all those I’ve mentioned
before, he will be truly missed and in our hearts and
prayers this coming season.

Ripper (P.S.) by Isabel Allende.
Brilliant and introverted, a MIT-bound high school
senior is a natural-born sleuth addicted to crime novels and Ripper, the online mystery game she plays with
her beloved grandfather and friends around the world.
When a string of strange murders occurs across the city,
Amanda plunges into her own investigation, discovering,
before the police do, that the
deaths may be connected.
But the case becomes all too
personal when her mother
Indiana suddenly vanishes. Could her
mother’s disappearance be linked to the serial killer?
Now, with her mother’s life on the line, the young
detective must solve the most complex mystery she’s
ever faced before it’s too late.

WGA-18 News
By Karen McNamara
The Opening General
Meeting on March 3rd was
well attended and those present
received a great deal of information about the upcoming golf
season. Josh and Alissa showed
us how to use the new software
called Golf Genius. Just think, with
the app on our smartphones we
will be able to post scores and pictures
as they happen. Wonders never cease. Emily
shared what the updated WGA 18 website will contain.
My hope is that everything found on our bulletin board
will also be on the website.
We welcomed eight new members: Patti Luxenburg,
Lindsay Mackie, Hallie Marcotte, Anne Mills, Amy
Rosenberger, Maria Supko, Kathleen Tindal, and
Ann Van Voorhis. Our membership is 75 members
and climbing. You can join at anytime.
Some changes for the 2015 season:
Tuesday and Saturday Play – Ladies pick their tee to
play from- no age or handicap requirement. If you pick
red, you will be given a differential of 1.8, a maximum
of two strokes more than your red handicap as you are
competing against ladies playing from the green tees.
more in the game, the pro shop will flight by handicap.
Otherwise we will play as one flight.
Nine and Dine and Major Tournaments will play
from the green tees except for the WGA 18 Stroke
Championship. The championship flight will play from
the red tees.
Wild Card – One “non-winner” will join the winners in
the prize distribution in Major Tournaments.
The Golfer of the Year Tournament is back (October
20th). In addition to our monthly winners of low gross
and low net, an extra entry into this tournament will
come from the person who participated in the most
major tournaments during the year.
By majority vote, it was decided to keep the USGA
recommended handicap index of 40.4 which has been in
effect at SGCC since 2010.
Our ARFAX and WDCGA teams begin their team
matches this month. They will continue through May.
After that, both organizations have tournaments that
their members can participate in throughout the golf
season. Requirements for these two groups can be
found in our directory and on the website. Springfield
will be hosting these teams on April 22nd and April
28th. Contact Michelle Austin (WDCGA) or Judy English
(ARFAX) for more information.

Tennis Chatter
By Patty Evans and Michael Thimblin
April has arrived; that means spring, warmer weather,
and outdoor play. As you may have noticed, the materials have arrived for the soft courts and they should
be re-opening from their winter rest as soon as the
weather cooperates. The weekly emails will let you
know when they are ready for play.
Our first event of the tennis season is this month. The
Ice Breaker Team Double tournament will be held
on Saturday, April 18th, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This is our first scheduled outdoor event of this season,
and being a team event, it is a great time to meet some
new players. There will be a social gathering with food
and drink after tennis. For more information check the
flyers and club web site. We are also encouraging all
members to invite any friends or neighbors that play
tennis to be our guests for a few hours and sample our
fun, relaxing environment. Please contact one of the
pros if you plan on bringing a guest so we can get an
approximate skill level. Help us to make our first oncourt outing a success with a large turnout.
Tennis team season is approaching and the club is
planning on fielding men’s and women’s teams in various Interclub, NVTL, and/or USTA leagues. If you are
interested in playing please let one of the staff members
know so that you can be added to the roster.
If you are not receiving the weekly tennis email,
opt-in via the SGCC web site or by calling the Tennis
Pro Shop. The weekly emails will highlight the various
upcoming activities available at the club. As always we
are interested in hearing about how we can make your
tennis experience better, so feel free to contact us with
any suggestions.
See you on the courts!

Summer Water
Aerobics
WOW! Here it is April already! After our cold snowy
winter it’s time for spring and to start thinking about
our summer water aerobics. This will be our 21st year
of the Water Aerobic program here at SGCC. You don’t
have to know how to swim or even get your hair wet!
This exercise program is not splashing around in the
water, but rather an effective way to build strength in
an aerobic capacity. It is a non-weight bearing exercise, which means your feet and legs do not support all
of your body weight. While the water supports your
weight, it also provides a great deal of resistance for
your muscles to work against. Water aerobics is less
stressful on your joints than exercising on land where
you are working against gravity. We work with “fun
toys” such as noodles and weights.
We have an 11-week program offered to all SGCC
members (both MEN and WOMEN are welcome!!). I
hope to encourage some new faces to join us. Classes
are offered Monday-Friday 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,
starting on Monday, June 8th to Friday, August 21st. We
have five well-qualified water aerobic instructors, who
are “upbeat and energetic.” These instructors, with
their fabulous personalities, incorporate a wide range of
music in their classes. You can choose your own timeframe to make it fit your needs (once, twice a week, or
whatever suits your busy schedule).
Options offered are as follows:
10 Classes – $60
12 Classes – $65
16 or more – $80
April 23rd

In one study, just five minutes of exercise five
times per week resulted in golfers increasing club
head speed by an average of 24%. Developing
endurance is crucial to maintaining a consistent
swing towards the end of your golf game. Taking
walks, outdoors or on the treadmill, and practicing
balance and stability exercises will increase your
endurance. Workouts that incorporate proprioception, or body position awareness, such as yoga,
will enhance your ability to adjust your swing.
If you’re looking for a more effective, thought-free
workout this is for you.
Class News
We have had great participation in all of our classes. We
appreciate all of the feedback that we have received.
We will continue to work diligently on getting the
spin bikes where they need to be. Thank you for your
patience. Register on the SGCC website or at the
Fitness Center front desk now to reserve your spot.
All fitness classes are now free! We’re always happy
when class participation is high, so try out something
new! We look forward to seeing you!
Reminder:
Please don’t forget to get your free fitness assessment if you have not done so, just contact the Front
Desk to be set up with a trainer.
