HOUSING CO-OPS IN BC CURRENTLY ACCEPTING WAITING LIST APPLICATIONS August 2011 This is a list of housing co-ops in British Columbia currently accepting applications for their waiting lists. You can also view information in the “Co-op Directory” of CHF BC’s website at www.chf.bc.ca Online listings may also include additional information such as co-op pictures, maps, and application forms. You can get a free copy of these listings by visiting CHF BC’s Vancouver office weekdays between 8:30am and 4:30pm, or by calling 604.879.5111 (or toll free 1.866.879.5111). What is co-op housing? A housing co-op looks like any other townhouse or apartment building. The difference is that a co-op is jointly owned by the people who live there. A co-op is not operated for profit and no one can buy or sell their unit. There is no financial gain upon leaving the co-op. You can live in the co-op so long as you meet the conditions of membership. These are set out in your occupancy agreement with the co-op. Working together, co-op members share the responsibility of making the co-op successful. As a member, you contribute by serving on the board of directors or committees. Members manage the operation of the co-op, making decisions about goals, community guidelines and how money is spent. As a member, you have a vote at meetings where decisions are made. People may be hired to maintain or administer the co-op but the final responsibility belongs to the members. Everyone – regardless of race, culture, religion, age or income – is eligible to live in co-op housing, provided they are willing to respect the obligations of membership. When choosing members, CHF BC Co-op Listings – August 2011 the co-op considers your skills and housing needs. Co-ops can offer the safety and security of a small village while living in large cities and towns. They provide opportunities to meet new people, places for children to play and suites adapted for people with disabilities. Co-ops are mixed-income – often family-oriented – communities. If you join a co-op, you will be expected to: Buy shares in the co-op Pay a monthly housing charge Attend members’ meetings Participate in the operation of the co-op: join a committee, run for the board, help with maintenance and/or organize social events. Cost of co-op housing Co-ops are mixed-income communities. Some members pay a housing charge geared to their income. Others pay a housing charge close to market rent. You must buy shares and sign an occupancy agreement before you move in. When you leave the co-op, your shares are returned minus any debts or repair costs owed to the co-op. The cost of a share is decided by each co-op; usually interest is not paid on shares. The monthly housing charge is based on the total cost of operating the co-op. If your income is low, you may be eligible for a subsidized unit. Based on the information you provide, the co-op will determine whether you qualify for subsidy. Housing charges may change based on the financial needs of the co-op. How to apply Most co-ops have long waiting lists, often up to three years if you require subsidy. The wait can be shorter for unsubsidized units. You must apply to each co-op individually (CHF BC does not accept or forward coop applications). Write a short letter to each co-op that interests you requesting an application form. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. When you receive the application form, fill it out completely and return it to the co-op. For co-ops wishing to change a listing Housing co-ops can change a co-op listing by mail, fax, on our website at www.chf.bc.ca/pages /directory-app. asp or by email info@chf.bc.ca.
