Others, however, have reservations about opening New
Mexico to radioactive waste. Don Hancock, a waste expert
with the Southwest Information and Research Center in Albuquerque, said towing volatile waste across the country could be
problematic. With no plans for a permanent repository facility, a
site in New Mexico could end up being the final destination for
spent fuel. He also expressed concern that Martinez seems to be
focused on just bolstering southeastern New Mexico.
“She certainly hasn’t asked the people of the state what they
think about it,” Hancock said.

includes Austin, the state reported 17 deaths from prescription
painkillers in its preliminary count of death certificates, but the
administrator of the county’s Medical Examiner’s Office handcounted 114 deaths involving all prescription drugs that year, the
newspapers reported.
It’s not just Texas that is having trouble accounting for prescription drug deaths. It’s a nationwide problem, Bob Anderson,
chief of mortality statistics for the National Center for Health
Statistics at the Center for Disease Control Prevention, told
the newspapers. The federal government has no way to capture
complete data from approximately 2,300 medical examiners,
justices of the peace and coroners all over the country, he said.
“It’s clear we’re missing a lot of prescription drug deaths,”
Anderson said. “It’s important to communicate that we need
the specificity, we need the detail. If we can’t adequately identify
which drugs caused the death, we don’t know where to focus
prevention efforts.”

“Not a single iota of physical evidence connected Mr. Pruett
to this crime,” lawyer David Dow said in a federal court filing.
Pruett testified at his 2002 trial in Corpus Christi that Nagle
tore up the report containing his name and that he was in a gym
when he found out the officer had been stabbed with a 7-inch
sharpened metal rod.
Appeals suggesting the officer’s unknown killer ripped up
the report and left it at the stabbing scene to frame Pruett were
“not credible in light of Pruett’s own testimony,” Jefferson Clendenin, an assistant Texas attorney general, said.

“It’s very secretive out there,” said Maricel Gonzalez, chief
appraiser for the Culberson County Appraisal District. She
declined to describe it, citing a nondisclosure agreement. A UPS
driver who recently emerged from the compound also declined
to talk.
Nuny Morriss, a Van Horn city council member and FedEx
delivery driver, said the site includes a “big warehouse-looking
building and some offices ... But they don’t let us go around in
the back.”
Blue Origin’s presence in Van Horn is minimal. Morriss
recalled word getting out a few years ago about a scheduled
launch. Traffic at the local airstrip suggested that VIPs were
coming in, and local officials were eager to join them. “No one
in town got invited,” Morriss said.
By contrast, SpaceX is frequently in the headlines thanks to
its nearly $2 billion federal contract. Attempts to reuse booster
rockets have been rocky; it’s failed three times to land them on
a platform off the Florida coast.
SpaceX already has a rocket plant near Waco. With more
than $15 million in state incentives, it’s also building a launch
site at Boca Chica Beach, near Brownsville. Musk hopes for at
least 12 rocket launches a year, starting late next year.
“The long-term goal is to create technology necessary to take
humanity beyond Earth,” said the 43-year-old South Africa
