The Breathe New Hampshire Mission
Breathe New Hampshire is committed to eliminating lung disease and improving the
quality of life for those living with lung disease in New Hampshire.
“Breathing is the greatest pleasure in life.“
~Giovanni Papini
President’s Message
NEW NAME. SAME MISSION. LONG-STANDING NEW HAMPSHIRE HISTORY.
Reflecting on our fiscal year 2006 - 2007, we recall the many hours of discussion, fact-finding, and planning that led our Board of Directors
to the decision to remain an independent organization and change our name on July 1, 2007 to Breathe New Hampshire.
The decision to not renew our annual franchise agreement with the American Lung Association (ALA) was due to the ALA’s mandate that
state organizations merge into large, multi-state regional organizations. A merger would have forced us to dissolve our state organization and
relinquish control of our assets, including our New Hampshire specific programming and initiatives, to a regional organization based outside of
New Hampshire. With this concern in mind, our Board of Directors – comprised of both corporate leaders and physicians – voted unanimously to remain an
independent New Hampshire based organization.
At Breathe New Hampshire, we take our 91-year history of preventing lung disease in this state seriously; promoting “clean air,” both indoors and outdoors;
funding medical research; working with our state’s elected officials; and, in general, providing support, educational programs, and an array of services to the citizens
of New Hampshire who are affected by lung diseases. These diseases include lung cancer, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease – chronic bronchitis and
emphysema), asthma and tobacco/nicotine addiction.
Over the last year we were able to contribute to some landmark public health achievements, particularly in the area of clean air. I invite you to read this report
for some of our 2006 - 2007 highlights.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Daniel Fortin, President & CEO

Our History
For more than 90 years Breathe New Hampshire has tackled current day threats to
healthy breathing in the Granite state, including tuberculosis, asthma, COPD, lung
cancer, nicotine addiction, and air quality, both indoors and out.
“If I had to limit my advice on healthier
living to just one tip, it would be simply
to learn how to breathe correctly."
- Andrew Weil, M.D., 1999
A Word from the Board Chair
As you are all aware, on July 1, 2007, our Board of Directors made the strategic decision to not renew our agreement with the
American Lung Association and accordingly change our name to Breathe New Hampshire. The change to Breathe New
Hampshire represents the 7th name that this organization has had since our founding as the New Hampshire Association for the
Prevention of Tuberculosis in 1916. As the times and challenges to lung health have changed, Breathe New Hampshire has strived
to find innovative and creative methods for addressing the challenges.
As the state’s oldest voluntary health organization, our decision to remain independent reflects our commitment and resolve to address and focus
on the respiratory health challenges of this state. As a New Hampshire organization, we know our state, we know our residents, we know our legislature and we know New Hampshire’s public health challenges. So for that reason, we are committed to remaining an independent voluntary
health organization.
I am involved with Breathe New Hampshire, not only because I lost my husband to lung disease, but because I am interested in my future, your
future and the future of our children and grandchildren. Every one of us breathes. This organization is, has been, and will be, there to educate the
public, support and work with the health community, and collaborate with our partners and New Hampshire’s legislators, so that all of us can breathe
better and longer.

Our Vision
A New Hampshire where every person living with asthma knows how to best
manage their disease and has access to the life-saving medications they need
“Breath is Spirit. The act of
breathing is Living.“
~Author Unknown
Asthma is the leading chronic disease in the nation and this state among children. It is estimated that one
out of every 10 children in the U.S. has been diagnosed with asthma and the number is increasing all the time.
Over the last year Breathe New Hampshire, through a grant from the NH Asthma Control Program, educated over 400 daycare providers at over 130 daycare centers around the state in creating and maintaining
an “asthma-friendly” environment for enrolled children who are living with asthma.
Breathe New Hampshire provided training to over 100 healthcare providers helping them prepare for the
National Asthma Educator Certification Exam and to become Asthma Champions in their office. Literally
thousands of New Hampshire asthma patients benefit from this each year.
3
Our Dream
A New Hampshire that employs a comprehensive state-wide screening program
aimed at early detection of lung diseases, such as emphysema and chronic
bronchitis, and thereby improving one’s quality of life in later years
“For breath is life, and if you
breathe well you will live long
on earth.“
~Sanskrit Proverb
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an umbrella term for chronic bronchitis and/or
emphysema. It is currently the fourth leading cause of death in the state and country. COPD is most frequently caused by smoking, followed by air pollution, secondhand smoke, history of childhood respiratory
infections and heredity.
There is no cure for COPD. However, early diagnosis and treatment can slow the progression of the disease.
Underdiagnosis of COPD is common and a significant problem because symptoms do not usually become
apparent until the disease is advanced. By that time, the individual has often lost up to 50% or more of
their original lung capacity.
Spirometry is a common and easy tool used to diagnose COPD. It can detect the disease well before obvious symptoms develop. Breathe New Hampshire is committed to raising awareness about the importance
of early detection and treatments for this disease.
4
Our Children
A New Hampshire where citizens addicted to tobacco products are able to quit
successfully because they have the knowledge, encouragement, and support to do so;
and where young people are empowered to say “NO” to the tobacco industry because
they have a thorough knowledge of the dangers inherent in tobacco use
“The best things in life are nearest:
Breath in your nostrils, light in your
eyes, ...just in front of you.“
~Robert Louis Stevenson
One of every five New Hampshire high school students is a current smoker.
Breathe New Hampshire knows the importance of stopping lung disease before it begins. This is possible
through effective tobacco prevention education for our young people.
During the 2005-2006 school year, Breathe New Hampshire educated over 2,000 Granite State 5th grade
students about the health and social effects of tobacco use through the No Butts About It ™ program. The
prevention program is made possible through a grant from Heritage United Way.
Breathe New Hampshire has also established a Lending Library - a collection of educational materials
consisting of 3D displays, hands-on models, DVD’s and videos that are loaned at no cost to any educator
or health care provider at any public or private school, college, health organization or company in the
state. The lending library was made possible by a grant from the New Hampshire Medical Society. For
details, contact info@breathenh.org.
Breathe New Hampshire hopes to expand these programs during the coming year.
5
Our Future
A New Hampshire where the air is clean and healthy for everyone to breathe
“In an underdeveloped country, don't
drink the water; in a developed country,
don't breathe the air.“
~Changing Times magazine
Everyone is affected by the quality of the air, whether indoors or outdoors.
Air quality is particularly important for those whose breathing is already compromised by lung disease.
Breathe New Hampshire advocated successfully for the installation of scrubber technology at coal-burning
power plants in the Granite State. This technology will decrease by at least 90 percent the sulfur dioxide
emissions caused by the facilities. Sulfur dioxide is a known trigger for asthma episodes.
The NH Senate recognized Breathe New Hampshire for its “hard work and diligence in supporting efforts
to make New Hampshire’s bars and restaurants smoke-free.”
Breathe New Hampshire contributed to the state’s first “green” roof. The rooftop of Manchester’s City
Hall is now made of vegetation and soil. This alternative to a traditional roof has many benefits including
filtering air and water pollutants.

Our Volunteers
"Breathing control gives man strength,
vitality, inspiration, and magic powers."
~ Chuang Tzu
Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer. ~Author Unknown
Breathe New Hampshire volunteers help strengthen the organization and extend its resources exponentially.
Over 200 volunteers provide extra hands that enable us to do tasks and activities that might not otherwise
get done. Volunteers also provide valuable input to Breathe New Hampshire leadership and staff.
Each year, Breathe New Hampshire honors a volunteer who has been particularly instrumental in helping
the organization carry out its mission. At this year’s annual volunteer recognition event,
Vincent Kanhai-Singh was recognized as the recipient of the 2007 Donald L. Frost
Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award. “Vinnie” is successfully living with COPD
and is a great ambassador for Breathe New Hampshire. He selflessly shares his personal
story with others lending inspiration and hope to those who are also living with the
chronic disease. He makes guest appearances on radio talk shows, and is a member of
the Volunteer Action Committee.
