2014 Annual Report Dear Friends, Thank you for your thoughtful and compassionate support of St. Mary’s Center. Whether you made a financial donation, provided a Sunday dinner, organized an art project, worked in our garden, or read a story to preschoolers, please know that this enterprise cannot succeed without your help. This year St. Mary’s Center impacted the lives of more than 3,000 people, many of whom were isolated homeless seniors or frail seniors who found it difficult to maintain all the skills of daily living without some help. Through our efforts many seniors were able to find a place to live or maintain their home, perhaps reconnect with family, and most importantly reclaim an inner strength and sense of well-being that comes with “belonging” somewhere – in this case, the St. Mary’s Center community. Through our Food for All Program, families obtained grocery bags vital to extending modest budgets, hundreds of children received presents during the holidays, and our preschool provided young children with much-needed social skills development and learning within a play environment. None of this would be possible without your sustained support. It has been our intention this year to raise our visibility so that more people can discover the remarkable spirit at the heart of St. Mary’s Center. To that end, with this Annual Report we are debuting a new look for St. Mary’s Center – a new brand, with a new logo, tagline and a new website! Please check out our website and send the link to your friends, family and colleagues. Rodolfo, a retired US Veteran, emigrated from the homelessness, Lola knew that she couldn’t go another winter out in the cold and rain, so she walked in our door, and has never regretted it. A critical piece of St. Mary’s work is helping our participants engage with others to build their own community of support. Lola learned to Lola’s early family life of alcoholism and speak up in Recovery 55 and in her Women’s dysfunctional relationships, compounded Empowerment group and has made a number of by her own downward spiral, had given her friends. We provide a safe environment where learning, healing, recovery and self-empowerment can happen together. For Lola that means having Laura Buckley, a Jesuit Volunteer intern, as her case manager, who works with her to develop and transitions residents to more independent living. There she has bloomed! In her words, she “had to learn to live with other people” and Closer to Home with its common living area and kitchen provides that opportunity. Today, Lola has been clean and sober for seven months and her future has never looked brighter. Philippines. Emilia found a job right away at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift store, so for years her only experience of St. Mary’s was second-hand, through her husband, who had first learned about the Center from a friend. Very quickly, St. Mary’s became his favorite place to go – every day. Once Emilia retired to take care of her husband, St. Mary’s became their favorite destination. They have developed friendships through the Community Center, and are able to extend their modest budget through our lunch and grocery bag program. Between visits to his primary care physician, Rodolfo sees our nursing students to receive help with managing his medications. Both Emilia and Rodolfo participate in the exercise program, and are particularly drawn to dancing. St. Mary’s Center engages vulnerable seniors in seeking healthy life choices through education and a community of support. Isolation and food insecurity are constant issues for many of our participants. The Community Center offers a warm welcome in the morning with coffee and pastries, a hot meal at noon, food items “gleaned” from local merchants by volunteers are available daily, and supplemental bags of groceries are given out several times during the month. The Center is also the primary meeting place between our participants and community volunteers who help serve lunch, provide the Sunday Dinner, as well as all the dinners during the Winter Shelter. This year a number of our senior artists and their work were recognized at Oakland’s Art Murmur with an exclusive exhibit at Uptown Body and Fender in Oakland.
