NEWS
WHAT’S NEW?
Of course, the most obvious new item is the New
Year of 2011; so, I start with best wishes to you all
for a wonderful 2011.
Soon, we will also be celebrating the Jewish holiday
that is considered the New Year for Trees, the
holiday of Tu B’Shevat. To find out more about it,
please see the Rabbi’s article that starts on this
page and the additional information on page 2.
There’s also a new twist to this year’s “Feed Your
Soul / Feed Your Mind” Series. The services &
lectures will be joined with Shabbat Dinners (which
our president, Fred, likes to call the “feed your
stomach” part). All the details can be found on
page 3, including the four Friday nights scheduled.
Be sure to look over the Calendar of Events on the
back page which provides a quick review of all
that’s happening!
I conclude with a thank you (on behalf of me and
Howard) for the good wishes from our CBZ friends
for our “new” KW house.

TU B’SHEVAT (The 15th of Shevat)
Celebrated in 2011 on January 19-20 (sundown to sundown)

Editor’s Note: The custom of planting trees is often
observed by buying trees in Israel. At

Carmel Renewal, an emergency
campaign now running in response to
the recent horrific forest fire in Israel.

For the Love of Trees
According to Halakha, the rules
of engagement are straightforward,
simple and clear, but most important,
compassionate. They reflect Jewish
attitudes about war. All parties involved
in the conflict/combat are given particular
consideration. First, our own warriors are
considered. We have a list of all those who should be
exempt (including: he who is faint of heart; he who built a
new house and never lived in it; he who planted a vineyard
and has not tasted its fruit; and he who betrothed a bride but
not married her). All these are to be sent back home; it
would not be fair to do otherwise. Second, the enemy is
given consideration. We are required to start trying to solve
our disputes peacefully. No hostilities are allowed until a
peace offer is made and, if after sufficient time is given for
consultation the peace offer is rejected, only then we are
permitted to proceed with fighting. Finally, the environment
is given consideration. Wanton, wholesale destruction is
forbidden.
Special attention is given to trees. "Ki Ha-Adam Etz
Hassadeh, Lavoh Mipaneikha Ba-Matzor" (Deuteronomy 20:19).
“Is a tree like a man who can run away from you?”
Of course not! So, we are forbidden from cutting trees and
using them as instruments of war. As we have discussed
previously, Torah is like no other text and we are instructed
to look for more layers of meaning. We see that the Torah
compares a tree to a man, thus, perhaps the answer to the
above question should be, “Yes, a tree is as valuable as a
man”. Even more so, the text tells us the tree is our "alter
ego”, the tree is you - treat it, and by extension treat others,
the way you would want to be treated. This Torah injunction
started an ongoing love affair between the tree and the people

President’s Message
The New Year (the Jewish one), started off with a bang. We had our biggest Hanukkah Party ever,
with great food (of course, thanks to Nadia and her crew). Last Saturday was the Lighted Boat Parade
and we were represented by Bounce Margil’s boat blasting Klezmer music and displaying our nine-foot
Menorah. Our boat always gets a great response from the crowd at that event.
Last year, we began a program called ―Feed Your Mind, Feed Your Soul‖ with speakers after the Friday
night service. Because it was so successful, we are repeating it this year earlier in the season so that
more of you can attend. This time, it’ll be Feed Your Mind, Feed Your Soul, Feed Your Stomach
because we will be having the speakers on the same night as our monthly Shabbat dinners. Please
refer to the article about this event for more specific details and please be sure to join us. You won’t be
disappointed!
Several new members have joined our congregation in the past two months. So, this is just a reminder
to be sure to greet people you don’t recognize at services, to help all – especially our newest members
-- feel welcome and so that we continue to live up to our reputation as the oldest and friendliest
synagogue in South Florida.
Shalom, Fred
Tu B’Shevat Concepts
R a bbi Du da i ’s Me s sag e
( C O NT IN U ED F RO M P A GE 1 )
of Israel that is expressed by the yearly planting of tens
of thousands of trees by young and old, all over Israel
on the holiday of Tu B’shevat. After four hundred
years of neglect by the Ottoman rulers and the use of
trees as fuel by the native population, resulting in a
denuded, barren and desolate landscape, this beautiful
tradition of planting trees has made Israel the
greenest country in the Middle East.
Our love and care for the environment was taught and
practiced from pre-Talmudic times. In the first century,
the great sage Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai (founder of
the Academy of Yavneh) taught a whole generation of
our most famous and accomplished Rabbis of the
Mishnah. He singlehandedly put in place a system of
learning, worship and Torah study that displaced the
culture of animal sacrifice and replaced it with our
current system of prayer. He knew that was the only way
that could preserve the Jewish people and time has
proven him right. He famously said, "If you are about to
plant a tree and someone tells you, ‘The Messiah has
come, let us go and welcome him’, you must first finish
planting the tree, then you can go to greet the Messiah."
May you all be blessed.
Trees hold a distinctive place in the Jewish imagination.
Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden
because they ate from the tree of knowledge. Although that
tree and the tree of life remained standing in paradise,
cherubim and fiery swords guard the portals so that humans
can never reenter and achieve immortality. Instead the Torah
itself has come to be seen as a tree of life, offering ―length of
days‖ for ―those who grasp her‖ (Proverbs 3:16, 18).
This holiday is one of four New Year’s days on the Jewish
calendar. The feast of Tishrei begins the religious New Year.
The first of Nisan is the New Year for kings, a date used for
calculating the years of a king’s reign. The first of Elul is the
New Year for tithing animals and the fifteenth of Shevat is the
New Year for trees. The only New Year to fall on the fifteenth
rather than the first day of the month, Tu B’Shevat parallels
a midsummer festival of the vineyards, celebrated on the
fifteenth day of the month of Av.

enough to share the above passages with me, so that I could
share them with you. My thanks to Sheldon for this and

GUEST SPEAKER: Brewster Chamberlin - A local now, Mr. Chamberlin spent several decades working as
a historian, archivist, university teacher, lecturer, poet, essayist and writer of fiction while living in Manhattan, Germany, France, Italy, Washington DC and Greece. In 2001, he retired from an executive position at the
U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC, moving with his wife Lynn-Marie Smith to Key
West to concentrate on a series of five novels. Brewster's talk last Spring opened the door for many of us
to a world of discovery and knowledge about the Holocaust Museum’s inspiration and beginning. This
charming and brilliant man is sure to provide an informative and educational evening.
MENU: Matza Ball Soup, Roasted Chicken, Potatoes, Romaine Salad, Cake and Coffee & Tea
Friday, February 4th — 6:00 PM
GUEST SPEAKER: David Schofield - Artist David Schofield's large, exquisitely detailed, pen-andink cityscape drawings have won wide acclaim and are in many premier collections. He has lived
and worked in Key West for decades and has agreed to share his current work (which is not exhibited in any gallery) with our congregation. He is a most private and fascinating artist, and once you
have spent this special hour with him, you will never forget him or his extraordinary work. Please join
us for this special evening of art and conversation with artist David Schofield.
MENU: Moroccan Fish, Chicken & Rice with Raisins, Lentils with Sauteed Onions,
Mixed Green Salad, Cookies and Coffee & Tea
Friday, February 25th — 6:00 PM (note new date)

the cultural news editor, has lectured extensively around the world about art and the art market, and is the
author of The Art Stealers. During the last three decades of his leadership, ARTnews has won 40 major
awards for reporting, analysis, criticism, and design—the first and only art magazine to win these awards.
At CBZ he will answer questions and share stories of recovering art stolen during the Holocaust.

THE JEWISH HISTORY PANELS: L’DOR V’DOR
(FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION)
The Jewish History of Key West (1883-1968)
Officially presented in June 2010 by Susie Savitch on behalf of the myriad of those
that made this project a reality, this series of five photo-montage panels now hangs
at the back of the CBZ Social Hall. While you are urged to see the Panels for
yourself, the newsletters for the 2010-11 year will provide—one Panel per issue—a
synopsis of what is covered. This series is intended to emphasize the rich history
of CBZ encompassed by the Panels & the entire L’dor V’dor project.
PANEL 3 - see photo on page 5
This Panel includes various photos of the Appel, Appelrouth, Garfunkel
& Markowitz families, who were among the next wave of Jewish arrivals
in Key West. In 1887, Louis Fine and others began holding religious
services in whatever location was available, sometimes on the 2nd floor
of the Fine’s dry goods store. In 1907, the 1st synagogue in Key West
was established — Congregation B’nai Zion (originally Rodeph Shalom)
— in a converted medical building at 528-530 Simonton Street. As there
was no Social Hall until 1955, the YMHA (formed in 1907) was the center
of Jewish social life during this period.
MAZEL TOV to CBZ members Eileen & Justin Kawaler who are receiving this year’s
Florence Spottswood Humanitarian of the Year Award and will be honored at an organizational gala being held
at the Marriott Beachside Resort on January 29, 2011 @ 6:30pm.
Florence Spottswood was the founder of the American Red Cross chapter in Key West in 1917 and the award,
named in her honor, recognizes leaders who exemplify the principles of the American Red Cross: humanity,
impartiality, neutrality, independence, volunteer service and unity.

Thank You from Clara Liszt: Thank you to everyone who participated
in the Kiddush for my 90th birthday. Thank you to all who attended and to all
who sent the kind words, the beautiful cards, e-mails and messages. Thank
you to all who contributed to the Kiddush and the leaf on the Tree of Life.
Thank you for inviting my children, grandchildren and great– grandchildren.
What a surprise! Thank you to Rabbi and special thanks to Nadia who worked
so hard & tried so hard to keep it a secret. Forever Grateful, Clara

WE SHARED! Hanukkah Party (Dec. 5th) Recap!
Under the coordination of Alan & Linda Solomon,
the efforts of many came together to create an
event enjoyed by all who attended. Thanks to all
who cooked, set-up & decorated, entertained,
organized and cleaned-up. We’ve tried to name
everyone here, but if any names were inadvertently left out, apologizes are extended—the efforts
of all who participated are appreciated. The party
was very well attended by more than 150 people!
The Rebetzen and her amazing team of volunteers
made the Social Hall look great and prepared a
lovely fish dinner with latkes (maybe a 1000?)
handmade by Dr. Michael Klitenick, his daughter
Sarah, and Phil Heimer (head chef of A&B Lobster
House). The Rebetzen asked that Dahlia Woods
be thanked for her help as well. Fran Kreinces,
Donna Feldman, Audrey Samz and Karen GrantMargil were the Dreidelettes and entertained the
crowd on the plaza before the giant menorah was
lit for the 5th night of Hanukkah led by Rabbi and
cantor John. The "Not Ready for Prime Time
Klezmer Band", led by Dr John Kreinces, provided
delightful music for all. The band was comprised
of Larry Abramovitz, Diana Heller, Dr Bill Goldner,
Bounce Margil and Larry Bader. Karen Leonard
and Rabbi Dudai wrote a play detailing the heroic
efforts of the small Maccabeean community and it
was performed by a ―cast of 1000's‖, including
Fred & Diane Covan, Audrey Samz, Aaron Wechter,
Ami Emanuel, Becca Maun, Jordan Maun, Bailey
Maun, Mackenzie Cohen & Lauren Klitenick.

In hushed reverence, I kindle this
memorial
candle
in
loving
remembrance of my beloved (Mother, Father,
Son, Daughter) on this anniversary of his/her/
their death(s). We have been taught that
human souls are Thy candles. Through them
Thou bringest light into the world. For the
light of compassion and tenderness which my
loved one(s) brought into my life, I am
everlastingly grateful.
Help me O G-d to use the sacred memory of
my loved one(s) as a noble spur to
consecrated living. May I perpetuate and
transmit everything that was beautiful and
lovely in his/her/their character. Keep firm my
faith that we cannot go where You are not
and where You are all is well.
Amen.

Thanks to the following for their recent Gift Shop

Sandie Klubeck (our
newsletter circulation
manager, together with
husband Jim Everett)
shares that she recently
took on the challenge of
expanding her bread
making skills to include
sour dough bread.
Utilizing the book, ―The
Bread Bible‖ by Rose
Levy Berenbaum (that Jim
got her) and devoting quite
a bit of time, Sandie happily surprised herself and
achieved success. Sandie
is offering to assist if you
want to give-it-a-shot
yourself. She’s offering
the ―hard part‖ - genuine
Key West, wild yeast sour
dough ―starter‖ - to anyone
who wants some & an
offer to mentor as well!
