DIVISION 26 - ELECTRICAL
Section 26 28 16 - Enclosed Switches
1. GENERAL
1.1 WORK INCLUDES
A. Base Bid:
1. Electrical Contractor provide:
a. Safety switches of the types, sizes and quantities as herein specified and as shown on the
drawings. Provide all lugs and accessories necessary for proper installation and
operation.
1.2 RELATED WORK
A. All drawings and general provisions of the Contract including Division 1 requirements apply to this
section.
B. The following sections shall be adhered to in the performance of work specified by this section:
1. Section 26 05 19 - Low-Voltage Electrical Power Conductors and Cables
2. Section 26 05 26 - Grounding and Bonding for Electrical Systems
1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Provide product information prior to fabrication and installation. Product data shall include all
dimensions, weights, electrical ratings and replacement parts.
1.4 REFERENCE STANDARDS
A. The safety switches and all accessories shall be designed, manufactured and tested in
accordance with the latest applicable standards of the following:
1. UL98 - Enclosed and Dead Front Switches
2. UL50 - Enclosures for Electrical Equipment
3. NEMA KS-1 for type GD and HD switches.
1.5 ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS
A. Coordination:
1. Coordinate the work with other trades. Avoid placement of ductwork, piping, equipment, or
other potential obstructions within the dedicated equipment spaces and working clearances
for electrical equipment required by NFPA 70.
2. Coordinate arrangement of electrical equipment with the dimensions and clearance
requirements of the actual equipment to be installed.
3. Verify with manufacturer that conductor terminations are suitable for use with the conductors
to be installed.
4. Notify Architect/Engineer of any conflicts with or deviations from the contract documents.
Obtain direction before proceeding with work.
1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturer: For equipment required for the work of this section, provide product which is the
responsibility of one manufacturer.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. Deliver materials and products in factory labeled packages. Store and handle in strict compliance
with manufacturer's instructions and recommendations. Protect from damage from weather,
excessive temperatures and construction operations.
2. PRODUCTS
2.1 GENERAL DUTY SAFETY SWITCHES
A. Approved manufacturers are as follows:
1. Siemens Industry, Inc. Type HNF (Non-fused).
2. Eaton Corporation: Cutler-Hammer Products: Type DNH (Non-fused).
3. General Electric Company: Type TNH (Non-fused).
4. Schneider Electric: Square D Products: Class 3110 (Non-fused).
5. Substitutions: Not Permitted.
a. Source Limitations: furnish enclosed switches and associated components produced by
the same manufacture as the other electrical distribution equipment used for this project
and obtained from a single supplier.
B. Switch Mechanism/Handle:
1. Switch operating mechanism shall be non-teasible, positive, quick-make, quick-break such
that during normal operation of the switch, the operation of the contacts shall not be capable
of being restrained by the operating handle after the closing or opening action of the contacts
has started.
2. The operating handle shall be an integral part of the box and not the cover.
3. The handle position, combined with large “ON” and “OFF” lettering on the nameplate, shall
clearly indicate the switch position.
4. The operating handle must be made of steel, with no plastic parts other than the handle grip.
5. The operating mechanism must be made of steel, with no plastic parts.
C. Switch Interior:
1. All switches shall have switch blades, which are visible when the switch is OFF and the cover
is open.
2. Lugs, except for those on 30A switches, shall be front removable and UL-listed for Cu/Al 60°
or 75° C conductors in 30-100 ampere ratings and for 75° C conductors in 200-600 ampere
ratings. Line and load lugs shall be removable with no need to remove line shields and arc
suppressors.
3. All current carrying parts shall be plated to resist corrosion.
4. 60 – 200A fusible switches shall have spring reinforced fuse clips.
D. Switch Enclosures:
1. Top hinged enclosures are acceptable for 30 amp General Duty Switches only.
2. Enclosures for Type 3R switches through 200 ampere shall have provisions of for
interchangeable bolt-on hubs in the top endwall. Hubs size as indicated on the plans.
3. Switches shall have wire-bending space lug capacity for one size larger Al/Cu wire than NEC
and UL minimum requirements.
4. The enclosure shall be finished with gray baked polyester paint which is electrodeposited on
cleaned, phosphate pre-treated steel Type 1 and gray baked polyester paint which is
electrodeposited on cleaned, phosphate pre-treated galvanized steel for Type 3R.
5. All switch enclosures, except those for 30A General Duty Switches, shall have a formed front
flange to provide additional strength and rigidity.
6. Tangential knockouts shall be provided for switches rated 60-600A in Type 1 and 3R
enclosures where permitted.

E. Switch Ratings:
1. All switches shall be Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc. listed and meet NEMA Specification KS1.
2. Switches shall also be horsepower rated for AC and/or DC as indicated on the plans.
3. All switches, intended for service entrance, shall be UL approved for this application.
3. EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Verify that field measurements are as shown on the drawings.
B. Verify that the ratings of the enclosed switches are consistent with the indicated requirements.
C. Verify that mounting surfaces are ready to receive enclosed safety switches.
D. Verify that conditions are satisfactory for installation prior to starting work.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Install enclosed switches in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
B. Install enclosed switches securely, in a neat and workmanlike manner in accordance with NECA 1
C. Arrange equipment to provide minimum clearances in accordance with manufacturer’s
instructions and NFPA 70.
D. Install enclosed switches plumb.
E. Provide grounding and bonding in accordance with Section 260526.
F. Identify enclosed switches in accordance with Section 260553.
G. Provide identification nameplate for each enclosed switch in accordance with Section 260553.
H. Provide arc flash warning labels in accordance with NFPA 70.
3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Perform field inspection in accordance with Section 014000.
B. Inspect and test in accordance with NETA STD ATS, except Section 4.
C. Perform inspections and tests listed in NETA STD ATS, Section 7.5.1.1.
D. Correct deficiencies and replace damaged or defective enclosed safety switches or associated
components.
3.4 ADJUSTING
A. Adjust tightness of mechanical and electrical connections to manufacturer’s recommended torque
settings.

3.5 CLEANING
A. Clean dirt and debris from switch enclosures and components according to manufacturer’s
instructions.
B. Repair scratched or marred exterior surfaces to match original factory finish.
