Copper Bonded Ground Rods
Electrolytically Plated
Ground rods are made of high-strength steel that has
been electrolytically plated with a heavy coating of
copper.This electrolytic process assures that the copper
is evenly and permanently distributed over the entire
surface of the ground rod.The copper, of course, protects
the rod against corrosion from the surrounding ground
elements, and the solid steel core allows the rod to be
driven with either a light hammer, or mechanical,
pneumatic or gasoline powered ground rod drivers. Both
standard and sectional ground rods are available.
U.L. Listed
Ground rods are listed with Underwriters’ Laboratories,
Inc. and meet or exceed the requirements of
ANSI/UL467-1984.This listing includes standard ground
rods of one-half inch diameter through one inch diameter, in lengths of eight feet and longer.
Sectional ground rods, in lengths of eight and ten feet of
one-half through one inch nominal diameters are also listed. GRH and Type GRE clamps are listed for direct burial.

Copper Bonded Ground Rods
The chamfered top prevents
mushrooming when driving.
Corrosion resistant and trouble free electrical connections
are assured when using bronze clamps.
Copper is permanently distributed
over the entire length of the ground rod by
means of an electrolytic process to assure an even
coating of the corrosion resistant metal.
Steel cores are cold drawn
to assure extra strength and
rigidity (Minimum tensile
strength: 80,000 psi).).
Ground rod tips are cold pointed, to preserve the integrity of
the cold drawn steel.This tip shape is especially effective for
penetrating all types of soil conditions.

Sectional Ground Rods
Sectional ground rods are easily driven to depths of 50
feet and more, in order to provide uniform low
resistance grounds.They are available in the same sizes as
the standard rods, and have precision rolled threads at
each for joining the sections with strong bronze threaded
couplings. Steel driving bolts are used to protect the
couplings during installation.
To drive sectional rods, the coupling is tightly screwed on
the top end of the first section.The driving bolt is then
screwed into the top end of the coupling until it reaches
the top of the ground rod(A).When the first section has
been driven to the ground line, the driving bolt is
removed from the coupling and replaced with the second
section of rod(B). Another coupling is placed at the top
end of the second rod, the driving bolt is inserted and
driving is resumed.This continues until the desired depth
is obtained.
(Couplings and driving bolts are not included with the
sectional rods and must be ordered separately.)

Pigtail Ground Rods
The pigtail is firmly fastened to the ground rod with a heavy copper sleeve,
which is then dipped in lead-tin solder to seal and strengthen the
connection. Pigtail rods are three-eighths inch in diameter, five and six feet in
length, and have an 18 inch #10 AWG Copperweld® pigtail.The pigtail does
not interfere with driving (it’s secured approximately two inches from the
chamfered end), and is attached parallel to the rod to avoid damage in
shipping.

Ground rod clamps provide permanent, low resistance, copper-to-copper
connections.
Type GRH clamp has a tough cast bronze body and a non-ferrous hexagonalhead set screw.The GRH clamp takes unusual punishment, provides a high
pressure contact between the rod and the grounding wire, and can be easily
disconnected to measure ground resistance.
Type GRE clamp provides economy without loss of efficiency. It is made with
a strong cast alloy bronze body, and a large clamp-wire-rod contact area.

Weld Metal
The size and weight (in grams) of the cartridge are marked on
each individual cartridge.When a particular size cartridge is not
available, a combination of smaller cartridges, or a portion of a
larger cartridge may be used to arrive at the approximate gram
weight required.When using several smaller cartridges, take care
not to get the starting powder is packed in the bottom of each
cartridge and when poured into a MOLD should be spread
evenly on top of the weld powder. Due to the cohesiveness of
the starting powder, it does not mix with the weld powder and
the bottom of the cartridge should be tapped with a flint gun to
be sure all the starting powder has been removed. DO NOT
TAMP POWDER DOWN ONCE IT IS PLACED IN THE MOLD.
WELD Powder is packed in moisture-resistant plastic cartridges
that have tight fitting caps.These cartridges and the necessary
steel discs are then packed in boxes that are hermetically-sealed
in plastic bags.This insures the powder arriving in good
condition, always dry and ready for fast positive ignition.
WELD® Powder comes in two types; one for welding copper to
copper, copper to steel and copper to rail and one for welding
copper to cast iron.

Clamps
For most connections involving lugs, cable, or rectangular bus,
change clamps are used. Clamps make possible the use of many
different sizes and types of molds with only two different clamps.
The two change clamps are catalog numbers B-106 and B-107.
These will fit 95% of all standard molds.

Cable Cleaning and Card Cloth Brush
The Cable Cleaning Brush is recommended for cleaning
heavily oxidize cables.The V-shape brushes permit their
use over a wide range of cable sizes. Brush assembly
consists of a handle with two stiff wire bristle brushes that
are rotatable, for longer life and are replaceable.
The Card Cloth Brush is used for cleaning large
conductors and bus bar. It has short stiff bristles.These
brushes are for cleaning cable only, not molds.
