INTRODUCTION
The Honeywell proximity sensors in this catalogue are
designed for use in the harsh environments encountered
in Aerospace, Ordnance and Marine markets. They are
well suited to applications with particularly demanding
requirements such as temperature, vibration, shock and
EMI/EMP/lightning interference.
The technologies used on one part products are :
ECKO - Eddy Current Killed Oscillator
Hall Effect
Many of the proximity sensors contained in this
catalogue have been custom designed to meet the
needs of a specific customer. For example, they may
have been designed to operate directly in high
pressure hydraulic systems or to count projectiles in
high rate of fire, high shock applications on gun
systems.
Each of these technologies has unique features and the
choice of technology must be based on specific
application needs. The table at the bottom of the page
should be used as a general guide.
The development of these demanding designs has
given Honeywell a wealth of application engineering
expertise with years of related experience in the
Aerospace, Military and Marine markets.
Because of an infinite combination of special
requirements imposed by different applications, all
products are not listed in this catalogue. Honeywell Sales
and Engineering personnel will be pleased to work with
you to define your unique requirements and achieve a
design or help you select an existing product most suited
to your needs.
Global manufacturing capabilities exist to provide
maximum customer service. Production lines operate in
both the USA and Europe to provide dual sources of
supply.
Honeywell proximity switch products are available in two
distinct packaging concepts. One part products, as the
name implies, contain the sensing element and the
associated conditioning electronics in a single package.
Two part products contain only the passive sensing
element in the sensor, with the electronic conditioning
contained on a separate module to allow location in more
protected environments.
The following highlights the main features of the
product range:

Minimum distances between proximity switches
Honeywell inductive proximity switches are no-touch, non-interactive
devices and sensitive to all metals. They consist of an oscillator,
demodulator, level and switching amplifier.
The following minimum allowable distances apply to unshielded
proximity switches mounted opposite to each other, or side by side:
d1
> 3 d1*
> 4 Sn
Mode of operation
*Shielded devices may be mounted at distances 2 d1 .
If a metal object enters the electromagnetic field of the oscillator coil,
eddy currents are induced in this coil which change the amplitude of
oscillation. The demodulator converts the change in the amplitude to
a dc signal which causes the trigger stage to trip and the semiconductor output stage to switch.
Correction factors when applying sensors
As the nominal sensing distances stated apply to mild steel St37, the
appropriate correction factor should be used for other metals.

Measuring the maximum switching frequency
The two tests (performed in accordance with EN 60947-5-2) shown
below enable the maximum switching frequency f = 1/(t1 + t2) to be
determined exactly from the duration of the “switch on” period t1 and
the “switch off” period t2.

Installation
To ensure that both shielded and unshielded proximity switches
function properly, and to eliminate the possibility of false signals from
nearby metal objects, the minimum distances shown in the illustration
below must be adhered to.

TWO PART PROXIMITY SENSOR
Description :
The 300FW series two part proximity sensors are designed to work in
conjunction with Honeywell Sensor Interface Card (405FW series) or
Sensor Interface Module (ZS-00380 Series).
Designed for the extreme environments encountered in aerospace
applications, the sensor is enclosed in a rugged hermetically sealed
stainless steel housing and contains only a passive sensing element
based on the variable inductance balanced bridge principle. This is
used to detect ferrous objects passing in front of the sensing face.
The electronic conditioning circuitry is contained on the separate
Sensor Interface Card or Sensor Interface Module which may be
located in a more sheltered environment.
The combined sensor and interface system is highly reliable with
mean time between failure in excess of 500K hours when used with
the Sensor Interface Module ZS-00380 Series.
Features :
z Ferrous metal sensing
z Small size housing
z High reliability

340/370FW03R1 SERIES
TWO WIRE TWO PART PROXIMITY
SENSOR
(INCORPORATING BUILT IN TEST)
Description :
The 340FW03-R1 and 370FW03-R1 are two wire proximity sensors
and are designed to work in conjunction with the Honeywell Sensor
Interface Module (ZS-00500).
Designed for the extreme environments encountered in aviation
applications, the sensor is enclosed in rugged hermetically sealed
stainless steel housing with a steel core. To serve higher temperatures
the electronic conditioning circuitry for the 300FW series of proximity
sensors resides on a separate Sensor Interface Module. Operating on
vector impedance principal the sensor has an extended sensing range
for detecting a 17-4 stainless steel target passing in front of the
sensing face.
The combined higher tolerance sensor and the “smart” algorithm
interface module utilising multiple ac readings results in improved
sensing range and accuracy.
Features :
z Continuous precision distance measurement
z All metal sensor including magnetic core
z Low power consumption
z Enhanced Built in Test function (BITE)
z High level EMC and lightning strike performance
z Higher operating temperatures
z High repeatability and accuracy
Typical Applications :

Temperature °C to °C
Pressure
86 KPa to 106 KPa
Humidity
45% to 75%

square is equal to either:
A) the diameter of the circle inscribed on the active
surface of the sensitive face of the sensor, or
B) three times the rated operating distance, whichever is
the greater.

-UUNSHIELDED SENSOR - a sensor with limited side and
front sensing capabilities.
-VVOLTAGE - term used to designate the electrical energy
differential that exists between two points and is capable
of producing the flow of current when a closed path is
connected between the two points.
VOLTAGE DROP - sometimes referred to as Saturation
Voltage. In any solid state control that switches a load,
there will be some voltage dropped across the output. This
voltage drop or saturation voltage will often vary with the
amount of current going through the output section and
the load. It should be specified with current conditions.
