To work out. -Emma Broeniman, SU -Becca Mueller, SC -Daniela Lakosilova, XL My time in ACE has given me confidence because of an incident when I was forced to wear a dress. It was red, white, and blue day and I had to wear the red dress. I was very nervous about it, but when it was over I was way more confident. So I love that I had the experience. -Maurice McCoy, ACE -Jordan Rios, Angelina Scroppo, and Danny Folan, WS Now time for some camp jokes from Matt! Q. What do you call a guy who‛s been caught by a tribe of cannibals? A. Stew Q. What do bears walk with? A. Bare feet -Matt White, XL -Katie Bayne, ACE -Jorge Gomez, SU -Patrick Petruf, XL One Step Times A Comparison between Camp and School I am not an athlete. Before my treatment I was a soccer superstar and I had mentionable basketball skills. All that changed when cancer attacked. I was very sad because I couldn‛t play very well. As a result I was always the last pick, and this carried all the way to high school. People would pick me last without even realizing why anymore. No one would pass me the ball and as a result I wouldn‛t get better. When I came to camp no one expected me to win a gold medal, they just expected me to try my best, which is what I would do. High fives were thrown around when anyone did something good or simply tried. In a game that‛s so aggressive, sportsmanship and love went hand in hand. We played basketball the other day and I learned how to shoot. I find it sad that in my 17 years on earth I‛ve never learned. Was it because nobody cared? At camp, people care. -Ryan Allen, XL Top 20 Moments in Campcraft Wk.1 1. Rick peeing in his pants 2. Cows that look like Mel Gibson from "Braveheart" 3. Seeing a bald eagle, 'Merica 4. These two women came from the Pablove Foundation. They provided us with “Coolpix” Nikon cameras to keep, rechargeable batteries, and a camera case. In the classes they hosted, we learned every nook and cranny of our cameras. They showed us how to take pictures with different lighting, and shadow. They showed us how to take close up, and faraway photos. I loved doing this class with Shutterbug. -Caleb Steffen, SU -Emma Valentino, SU My name is Alayna and I want to say that most of us here have gone through the same thing, cancer. Many kinds. Fluffy little pillows called marshmallows. We all have our favorite kind, out of the bag or toasted on a stick. I could eat so many I‛d get sick from the bag or on a stick eatin‛ till I get sick – ooooh, no matter how you like them it‛s a fact. Whether you‛ve had one or four there‛s a sentiment that we can all agree on – oh we would like to have s‛more. -Christian Bass, SU One Step Times What It Feels Like Volunteering needs no rewards or recognitions, it‛s there already in its purpose. When more of us realize that giving is the most important form of receiving, the quality of many lives will benefit, will multiply. For all of us, time is the essence. For many of us, there seems to be no extra time to spend with those who may need a little more, have a little less, or look and feel a little different. Undeniably true, undeniably sad. We all should embrace our loved ones, friends, strangers and reach out to our co-inhabitants. It‛s not a factor of money, nor is it a factor of necessity…it is a factor of the heart. In reality, many times those that have the least, generally give the most. Set aside some unimportant tasks, rearrange some impending obligations, cancel some irrelevant gatherings. Give an hour. Give a hug. Give a dollar. Give a smile. Align yourself with the kind, the caring, the concerned. This other place is not of self. This other place is not of “So What?" This other place is not of material consequence. This other place is of empathy, compassion, sharing and kindness. Have a visit, walk on by, check it out, take a gander…get involved. Feel good. Feel worthy. Feel love. Feel thanks. Feel needed. Feel “this is where I belong!” Feel and be felt. Listen and be heard. Love and be free. You are important. You are contributing. You are appreciated. You are community. You are connected. Give you…VOLUNTEER! -Barry Siegel, ACE -Haley Helstrom, SU -Isaac Cutler-Kreutz, XL A Love Story Between 2 Programs -Teagen Reid, XL So my friend and I met another camper in a different program and we both thought he was cute. We saw him drawing so we both decided to go over and talk to him. I ended up doing most of the talking but Bertha was the one who caught his eye. After this day I noticed he would come to our lunch table more often to see her. However, Bertha would hide her face and ignore him. Later on after talking to him, I found out he wanted to go to the dance with her. But may I add he had already turned down 5 other offers. Then the next morning he came over to ask her to the dance but my counselor Shenana kicked him out. However she later invited him back, but he couldn‛t ask her because she wouldn‛t look at him. Stay tuned for next year for further development. Names have been changed to protect the innocent. -Anonymous Watersports Camper One Step Times -Anna Gogliotti, SB The thing that I liked about camp is that I was able to be the leprechaun for the scavenger hunt for the rainbow. It was fun because I made my pot of gold and got in green clothing. People in my group, Stepping Up, were pretending to catch me, and they would say, where is the gold? I said, I will tell you if you let me go, and then I ran away and hid with my gold. -Aleks Lazic, SU -Angelina Scroppo, WS We were at camp, “One Step at a Time. “We learned new songs, but the part they liked was a song called “I Saw a Bear.” The last day we have a dance and everyone likes it. All the campers and the Seabees like “Boom-Dynamite!” We learn how to do new activities like Disney, Halloween, and Christmas. The more they go to camp the more activities they learn, like cooking, animal trainers, veterinarian, going to college, to name just a few. If they are not ready, they can go back to camp. Some people want to go and some do not because they are afraid of leaving their parents and missing their friends. But once they go to camp they are glad they did. They realize it is fun to go to camp and do things they never thought they could do. The motorcycle group donates money to build more buildings so more campers can go.
