LOST BUS FINDS HER WAY
IN SANTA MONICA
EX-PANTHER TURNS TO FIRST LOVE: RACING
By Lynne Snierson
The last time the Carolina Panthers played in the NFL
championship round, Jake Delhomme was their star
quarterback, leading the team to its only previous Super Bowl
appearance 13 years ago. As the Panthers prepare to take on
the Arizona Cardinals in today’s conference championship, the
former Pro Bowl quarterback is more concerned with post times
than post patterns.
“I love the horse racing business,” said Delhomme, the
excitement building in his voice. “I have eight horses in training
now. I’m around the barn every day and that’s where I want to
be.”
Delhomme still lives in his hometown of Breaux Bridge,
Louisiana in the heart of Cajun country. He may be the owner of
Set-Hut Stable, but it’s a family business in which the Delhomme
roots run deep. Cont. p3

Terry Lovingier’s Lost Bus (Bring the Heat) sprung a major
upset and went from claimer to graded stakes winner with a
gritty victory in Santa Anita’s GII Santa Monica S. Saturday
evening. Dismissed at odds of 64-1, the 4-year-old attended the
early pace from a neck third and stuck her nose in front as they
clocked an opening quarter in :22.42. Hugging the rail, the bay
continued to maintain a narrow advantage through a half in
:44.93 with Finest City (City Zip) breathing down her neck. The
pair battled down the length of the stretch, but Lost Bus kept on
finding to hold both that rival and late-running “TDN Rising
Star” Tara’s Tango (Unbridled’s Song) at bay in a photo finish.
"This race was a Grade I when I won it last time [with
Intangaroo {Orientate} in 2008],” winning trainer Gary Sherlock
said. “Lost Bus was pretty much going to run before I learned
Sunday Rules wouldn't be entered, but I was running for third,
and it turned out better than that. There wasn't a lot of speed in
the race, and I told [jockey] Fernando [Perez] to go to the front."
Lovingier added, "I'm kinda lost for words. I didn't expect this
and not too many others did either; she was 60-1. We claimed
her because she battled quite a few times with [Lovingier’s] My
Fiona when they were both 2-year-olds. I don't claim that often
anymore, but I did claim quite a few horses before I started
breeding them."

when returned to Heap’s care last October.

Claimed by Lovingier and Sherlock for $32,000 off a fourthplace effort over the Del Mar lawn Nov. 19, the filly finished
second when returned to the dirt at Los Alamitos Dec. 13 and
was third last time behind an impressive performance from
talented Cal-bred Sunday Rules (Tribal Rules) in the Kalookan S.
over the Arcadia main track Dec. 30.

Jake’s grandfather, Sanders, always had racehorses and his
father, Jerry, started riding Quarter Horses at the bush tracks
when he was eight years old and then turned to breeding and
training Thoroughbreds.
Jake and his brother, Jeff,
grew up in the barn doing
every job, and their
mother, Marcia, still
keeps the books and runs
the office.

three are hands-on in the
shedrow with whatever needs to be done regardless of titles.
“I strictly run in Louisiana and have Louisiana-breds,” said Jake,
who retired from the NFL after the 2011-12 season and after 14
seasons playing for the New Orleans Saints, Panthers, Cleveland
Browns and Houston Texans.
“I also have three broodmares in Kentucky. I’m partners with
four or five other guys and we breed and sell in Kentucky
because I like to keep my hands in different parts of the
business. I do some pinhooking with Al Pike, who is a consigner
of 2-year-olds. A couple of years ago we sold some at the select
sales, but I am strictly into Louisiana-bred racing. The babies and
the mares are in Kentucky,” said Delhomme, who is the former
president of the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association
and its current vice-president.
The name Jake Delhomme is still magical in Louisiana and New
Orleans, where he was the beloved back-up quarterback for the
then-struggling Saints for six seasons. Not only has he enjoyed a
successful NFL career, he sits on the board of directors of a
major bank and has been a celebrity endorser for a popular
restaurant chain. Although he could buy horses and campaign
them on any major circuit, he chooses to stay close to home.

Ex Panther Turns to First Love: Racing cont.
“I don’t want to sound a certain way, but I am lucky enough
that I certainly could race anywhere I want to. I take pride in a
horse like Frammento (Midshipman), who ran in the Derby and
the Belmont this year. I was part of the group that bought him
as a yearling and sold him as a 2-year-old, and Al Pike pinhooked
Vyjack (Into Mischief). We sold another one named Delhomme
(Dixie Union) (a $230,000 Fasig-Tipton fall yearling), who was
named after me, and WinStar bought him (for $440,000 at FasigTipton Florida) but his career was cut short because of injury.
We also sold a Tapit colt (Golden Barows) and that horse won
his first two races in Japan and then was third in the UAE Derby
last year,” he said.
“I love doing that and it gives me a lot of excitement,” he
continued. “Don’t get me wrong. It would be great to race on
that level but I love going to the barn every day and being with
my dad and my brother. The racetrack is like a family with a lot
of the people who work there and it’s a great deal of fun.”
Set-Hut Stable’s best horse currently is the homebred
4-year-old filly Forest Lake (Forestry). The winner of the 2014
Evangeline Downs Starlet S. was born right behind Delhomme’s
house.
“I watched her be raised in our barn and those moments are
special. She’s really doing well and I’ll run her Feb. 6, which is
the day before the Super Bowl, in the Distaff on the Premier
Night at Delta Downs and I’m excited just talking about it,” he
said.
Delhomme’s football prowess landed him in the Louisiana
Sports Hall of Fame and in the same 2015 class with trainer
Frank Brothers. Along with a Who’s Who of football luminaries,
he’s now enshrined with racing legends Ronald Ardoin, Eddie
Delahoussaye, John Franks, Mark Guidry, J.D. Mooney, Craig
Perret and Randy Romero.
Is he more impressed by the football or the racing stars he is
immortalized with?
“Both. I’ve become very good friends with Eddie
(Delahoussaye) over the years. He’s moved back to Lafayette
and I see him a good bit at the training center because he’s
always out there. He’s one of the classiest people you’ll ever
meet. He’s a big proponent of the game and the Louisiana
program. It was great to go into the hall with him. He was there
that evening I was inducted and that’s always special,”
Delhomme said.
Perhaps one day Delhomme will be a double Hall of Famer,
inducted a second time for his racing as well as football
accomplishments.
“I don’t know about that,” he laughed. “Hopefully, we’ll get
lucky and get a few decent horses… we’ll see what happens.
That would be really nice. How about we shoot for that?”

Meanwhile, the 41-year-old former quarterback can’t help
thinking about how the New England Patriots beat his Panthers
in Super Bowl XXXVIII by a field goal with four seconds on the
clock and quarterback Tom Brady won MVP honors.
“Would I like another crack at Brady and the Patriots in this
year’s Super Bowl? There is no doubt,” said Delhomme, who still
holds 10 Panthers records and was their honorary captain for
the coin toss in last Sunday’s playoff win.
Although Forest Lake is running in that stakes race at Delta
Downs the night before Super Bowl 50, he is invited to
accompany the Panthers to San Francisco should they be
playing. His heart will be in both places but he can’t be on the
rail and on the sidelines.
“Let’s see what happens. Hopefully the team gets there and
then we can work it out,” he said.

CONQUERING LION’S HEAD (AND CAPE
TOWN) Editorial and photos by Justin Casse
At 7:15am Thursday the 21st of January, eight brave souls left
the lavish confines of the Taj Hotel in the
center of Cape Town for the prospects of
conquering the Lion’s Head mountain,
sitting at 669 meters above sea level.
Unfortunately, only five would make it to
the top on that morning, and while I’ve
vowed to leave the unsuccessful climbers
anonymous, I will at least boast that
myself, Angus Gold (carrying all the
supplies), Philippa Mains, Isabel Mathew
and Hermione FitzGerald overcame
adversity and made it to peak. That
Lion’s Head mountain
entitled me to eat like a guilt-free pig for
the rest of the trip. I mean, as if I needed another reason to,
SUNDAY • JAN. 24, 2016
besides the fact that I am American, accompanied with what
feels like an unfair exchange rate that allows one to dine like a
king here.
These are just two of the many (non-horse related) activities I
have found Cape Town to offer. The diversity between country
and city that is in such close proximity to one another is amazing
here. You could be at one of many beaches (Llandudno being my
favorite), at the local football stadium, atop Table Mountain, in
the city centre or shopping at the Victoria Waterfront and not
leave an eight-mile radius.
On Thursday afternoon, the sale commenced at the Cape
Town Convention Center, potential buyers took their assigned
seats at the tables in font of the sales ring and horses lined up
out back awaiting their turn to come in. It didn’t take long for
me to have my name on the results sheet as I had selected a
Horse Chestnut colt consigned by Beaumont Stud that was
purchased by myself, Mick Flanagan and Mayfair Speculators for
the rational sum of
500,000 ZAR. I was
extremely pleased with
this and from that point
on I realized that
nowhere else can you
buy this caliber of horse
for what seems like a
reasonable sum of
Casse & his purchase
money. The dollar, euro
and pound allow you the
opportunity to purchase a solid racehorse in this country. If they
are good enough to ship out, the quarantine time can last much
longer than normal making it difficult to keep a horse fit enough
to compete upon leaving here. With that being said its worth
noting that it is incredibly cheap to keep horses in training here,
approximately a quarter of the costs per month to that of the
US.
The horse industry in this country is more of a hobby than a
place for investing in the Thoroughbred, via pinhooking and
commercial breeding, like we are used to in other markets; it
does happen but not with the frequency that we are
accustomed to. It definitely makes the sale more interesting, as
this makes the prices more end-user driven. With that in mind, I
would think the Cape Thoroughbred Sales Company would be
extremely pleased with the buyer turn out at the Premier sale.
There were buyers from across the globe showing up on the
results sheet to support the relatively young sales company.
China Horse Club, Coolmore, Amanda Skiffington, Tina Rau,
Henri Bozo, McMahon and Hill Bloodstock, Barronstown Stud,
Henri Bozo, Peter and Ross Doyle, Qatar Racing and Lady
O’Reilly all spent money here this week. Cont. p6

Conquering Lion’s Head cont.
Many of these players teamed up with each other to show
their support here, including myself on a second occasion with
Mrs. Nagle and Mrs. Shanahan when buying a Captain Al colt for
2.2m ZAR. That’s a pretty solid list of international buyers that
are leaving horses here to race in South Africa. I myself am quite
excited about the fact that I will have a real quality horse in
training here with Mike de Kock and Joey Ramsden. It should be
quite the thrill and give me something to look forward to over
the next few years on return visits.
The grand finale of the festivities in Cape Town did not
disappoint. The mayor of Cape Town, the leader of the
Democratic Alliance, Lester Piggott, Gary Player and many of the
purchasers mentioned above attended the black-and-white
themed party that took place in a glamorous tent that spanned a
quarter of a mile. A very strong day of racing at Kenilworth
started with a highly
touted 2 year old filly
named Cloth of Cloud by
Captain Al winning by open
lengths in her debut. The
country’s leading trainer,
Justin Snaith, won the
Investic Derby with an 18-1
shot. One of South Africa’s
Black & white dinner
leading breeders,
Drakenstein Stud, pulled off the unimaginable in the Group 1
Klawervlei Majorca Stakes when three of its runners vacated the
top three positions in the race. The $1m USD Cape
Thoroughbred Sales Stakes was the final stakes race of the day
and it could not have had a more suitable ending. Illuminator,
ridden by an apprentice rider (Heavelon V’d Hoven), shocked
the heavy favorite. The owner, trainer and rider would not be
found at the top of the leading statistic lists making the hefty
purse prize that much more significant. For example, the
jockey’s portion of the winnings will likely be more than he will
make over the next three years.
So for those hoping to cash in at the Investec Day of Dreams,
there will always be next year and if the people at the Cape
Thoroughbred Sales have any say it will go on for much longer
than that. I can assure you that if they continue to show the
hospitality and eagerness to please the buyers that they
displayed this week they will have no problems at gaining
enthusiasm for years to come. And as for me, I will definitely be
back next year and hopefully in 2017 with a runner or two of my
own in the CTS million-dollar race and if not for that then
definitely for the abundance of enjoyable activities (and food)
that Cape Town has to offer.

Winner of the 2004 GI Personal Ensign S. and GII Shuvee H.,
Storm Flag Flying also hit the board in four other Grade I events,
including a runner-up effort behind Hall of Famer and dual
Eclipse winner Ashado (Saint Ballado) in her final start in the
2004 GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff. She retired to Claiborne with a
record of 14-7-3-3 and earnings of $1,951,828.
The dark bay is out of MGISW millionaire My Flag (Easy Goer),
who is herself a daughter of champion Personal Ensign (Private
Account). This is also the female family of GISWs Traditionally
(Mr. Prospector), Miner’s Mark (Mr. Prospector) and Mr
Speaker (Pulpit). Storm Flag Flying has produced five foals
besides her Candy Ride filly, including an unraced 2-year-old colt
name Strident (Street Cry {Ire}).
"Storm Flag Flying was a magnificent racemare from a
magnificent family," said Claiborne representative Bernie Sams.
"We are saddened by the loss, but thankful our team was able
to save her foal, a filly by Candy Ride."
Storm Flag Flying will be buried at Claiborne Farm.

fire crews have been great and we’re grateful for all of their

RINALDO DEL GALLO, III:
I enjoyed reading today’s opinion piece, “Dissecting My Eclipse
Ballot” by your managing editor, Alan Carasso. With regards to
votes for the Eclipse award for 2-year old (champion) Mr.
Carasso writes: “More shocking is that there were three
abstentions. Huh?”
I respectfully suggest that these abstentions are not enigmatic,
let alone shocking. There are many who question giving end of
the year honors to horses that run so little, and the increasing
trend is for 2-year old's to not run that often.
The 2015 winner Nyquist ran five times. The 2014 winner
American Pharoah
ran three times (two
stakes). The 2013
winner Shared Belief
ran in three races
(two stakes); the
2012 winner
Shanghai Bobby ran
four times; the 2011
winner Hansen ran
Nyquist | Coady Photography
three times (two
stakes); 2010 winner Uncle Mo ran three times (two stakes). You
have to go back to the 2009 winner Looking at Lucky to find a
horse that ran at least six times.
This is not just a recent phenomenon: Seattle Slew was elected
2-year old champion with just three starts. Born in 1970, Secretariat
raced nine times when he was elected Horse of the Year (not just 2year old champion) for his 2-year old campaign. But this is to be
contrasted with La Prevoyante’s 2-year old season (she was also
born in 1970), which somehow did not beat Secretariat for Horse of
the Year with her 12 wins from 12 races.
The decreasing number of 2-year old starts is not a given. The late
part of the 19th Century and early part of the 20th Century saw the
acme of horses bred for precocity and speed at short distances--it
was the culmination of a trend that had been exhibited since the
foundation horses of the breed. To this day, we still call horses four
and under colts or fillies, and older ones “horses” or mares. Four
year olds and under were not considered fully developed, and at
longer races, such as modern steeple chasing, this proves true.

Letter to the Editor cont.
While there are exceptions (Menow), the records shows that
horses ran far more often as two year olds in the early half of
the 20th Century, at least at the top levels. In 1919, at two, Man
O’War won eight stakes and came in second in another. The
recently Hall of Fame inducted Billy Kelly, as a 2-year-old,
compiled a record of 14-2-0 from 17 starts in 1918. Of the
undefeated Colin’s 15 wins, 12 were as a 2-year old. All 13 of the
undefeated Tremont’s victories were in 1886 when he was a
2-year-old. For 2-year old retrospective honors, Count Fleet won
10 of his 15 races in 1942. Retrospective 1930 2-year-old
champion Equipoise ran 16 times that year. In 1922, Zev won
nine of 12 races for 2-year old respective honors. Retrospective
1887 2-year old champion Emperor of Norfolk raced 18 times.
If one looks at The Jockey Club’s fact sheet, one sees an
undeniable direction: In 1988, 2 year olds raced on average 4.0
times, whereas in 2014, they started on average of 3.1 times. It
is understandable why a voter might want to abstain from
voting on a horse that had such few starts.
During the end of the 19th Century and the early part of the
20th century, it was then lamented by many in the industry that
so many horses were being raced as 2 year olds and being raced
before full development. Today, there is a lively debate about
the desirability of 2-year-old horses racing, and not all the
science shows it’s bad for the horse or that it shortens their
racing careers.
While I believe it may be for the best that 2 year olds are
running less, it makes complete sense to me that someone
would chose to abstain from voting for 2-year-old (champion)
when the possible contenders have only run three to five times.
The 1977 2-year-old champion Affirmed ran nine times, won
seven times, and faced Aydar six times. That is a meaningful
record for which to cast a vote.

REGIONAL REPORT
SUNLAND POSTPONES RACING DUE TO
EHV-1 OUTBREAK Sunland Park has suspended racing
for at least 14 days after five horses tested positive for the
equine herpes virus EHV-1. A number of precautions and tests
overseen by the New Mexico Livestock Board and New Mexico
Racing Commission have been implemented to stop further
spread of the virus. “In the interest of equine safety, Sunland
Park Racetrack is postponing racing for an initial period of 14
days,” Rick Baugh, general manager of the track, said. “I’d like to
thank all the agencies involved, as well as our horsemen, for
their cooperation and support as we take a proactive approach
to protect our horses and make a quick return to live racing.”
Officials at Sunland stressed that, pending resolution of the
situation, the entirety of the race meet would not be cancelled.
Missed race dates will not be made up, however. The $800,000
GIII Sunland Derby is scheduled for Mar. 20.

Charming Kitten, who completed the trifecta in the GI Toyota

is a regular amongst the turf marathon ranks, but enjoyed an
up-and-down season in 2015. Beginning with a win in an
optional claimer at Belmont Park June 20, the dark bay took
second in the restricted Lure S. upstate at the Spa Aug. 8. Off the
board in the GII Bernard Baruch H. there Sept. 7, the 6-year-old
entire partially redeemed
himself with a runner-up effort
in the 1 1/2-mile
GIII Sycamore S. during the

to fire in Aqueduct’s GIII Red

Kitten added his first score at the Charming Kitten | Leslie Martin
graded level in the GIII W. L.
McKnight H. over this course Dec. 26. Content to sit in the
garden spot in third as Roccia d’Oro (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire})
showed the way through glacial splits, the heavy chalk stayed
relaxed while saving ground throughout the first circuit. He
slipped a spot to sit fourth briefly as rivals began to make their
bids approaching the final bend, but John Velazquez stayed
patient and left something for the stretch drive. Asked on the
final bend, Charming Kitten angled off the rails and pounced on
new leader Xaverian in midstretch before overwhelming that
rival to make it back-to-back wins. “It’s fun,” commented
winning trainer Todd Pletcher, who won this race last year. “It’s
a different kind of race, and it’s an honour to win a race named
after Mr. Jerkens. He’s such a legendary guy and a kind man,
and a genius horse trainer. I think the biggest key is identifying a
horse that wants to go stay that far and you need one that’ll
turn off early on and just get into a steady gallop.” Click for the

of a final-furlong scrimmage with narrow favorite and
stablemate Kismet’s Heels (Tapit--West Coast Swing) and proved

moved to the dirt in this second trip to the post. He had no luck
in the running of his Laurel debut when squeezed at the break

lengthy freshening and now hailing from the Graham Bell barn,
the grey was a 27-1 shot trying a route of ground for the first
time and rewarded his backers handsomely. Rating in midpack
while well off the fence, the sophomore began to inch closer to

CHIDING (f, 4, Blame--Sangrita {GSW, $171,508}, by Mr.
Greeley) began her career in the Michael Matz barn and in the
colors of her breeder, finishing second on debut at Gulfstream
almost exactly a year ago before a pair of off-the-board starts-back in Hallandale in March and at Parx in July. Scooped up for
just $45,000 by these shrewd connections at this past Keeneland
November sale, she was backed all the way down to 1-9 here
and did not disappoint. Doling out splits of :22.92 and :46.43,
she got the better of first timer Spank (Blame) by 6 3/4 lengths
at the line. The winner’s dam, a half to GISW Offlee Wild (Wild
Again), produced a colt and filly by Union Rags in 2014 and
2015, respectively. Lifetime Record: 4-1-1-0, $32,500. Click for

behind GIII Bob Hope S. fourth Dr. Dorr (Lookin At Lucky) and
one position ahead of stakes-placed Esposito (Ghostzapper)
when unveiled sprinting over the Santa Anita main Oct. 10,
lacked a finishing punch to report home seventh in ‘TDN Rising
Star’ Drefong (Gio Ponti)’s graduation at the seaside Nov. 14. A
solid third at Los Alamitos Dec. 20, the $42,000 KEESEP yearling
turned $190,000 EASMAY 2-year-old fired a five-panel bullet in
:58 4/5 (1/31) at Los Alamitos Jan. 16. Off at 4-1 in this turf bow,
the dark bay drafted in the wake of the leading trio into the
grandstand turn. Creeping closer at will with a half-mile to go,
Basinca switched to the inside as a gap opened at the head of
the lane and got to within a neck of erratic leader Silent Movies
(Chapel Royal) at the line. Following a stewards inquiry, that
rival was demoted to third for hampering original third-place
finisher and hot favorite Undeniable U (Red Giant) during the
stretch drive. The winner’s dam foaled a colt by Astrology and
was bred to Archarcharch last term. Lifetime Record: 4-1-1-1,

STALLION TRAIL
KARAKA SALE SERIES STARTS MONDAY
New Zealand Bloodstock kicks off its National Yearling Sale
Series Monday with its two-day Premier Sale at the Karaka sales
complex in Auckland. A total of 447 yearlings are slated to go
under the hammer during the Premier Sale, which is followed by
the Select Sale Jan. 27 to 29 and the Festival Sale Jan. 31, for
which an additional 929 lots are catalogued.
Karaka has long established itself as one of Australasia=s--and
the world=s--premier sources of Group 1 winners. The sales have
produced 21 individual Group 1 winners during the 2014/15
season--more than any other Australasian sales company--and
have also sold 37% of Australasia=s auctioned Group 1 winners
over the last five years with just 21% of the auctioned crop. The
NZB series got the 2015/16 season off to a fast start with seven
Group 1 winners in the first half of the season, including G1
Melbourne Cup winner Prince of Penzance (NZ) (Pentire {GB})
and G1 Caulfield Cup scorer Mongolian Khan (Aus) (Holy Roman
Emperor {Ire}). Cont. p4
Daithi Harvey caught up with champion Sea The Stars, and many
others, on the Irish Stallion Trail | Racing Post
By Daithi Harvey
Following a successful inauguration in 2015, the Irish
Thoroughbred Marketing Irish Stallion Trail saw stud farms once
again open their gates to the public for two days Friday and
Saturday. I took the opportunity on Friday to hit the road and
pack in as many visits as daylight would allow. I had two
traveling companions, John Baker and David Hayes, two friends
involved in agricultural farming who have recently seen the light
and diversified into mare ownership! Despite the perils of
Thoroughbred breeding, both possess a back pedigree that
should stand them in good stead in their latest venture; John's
grandmother Mary Baker bred Ireland's greatest-ever
steeplechaser, Arkle, while David's uncle, Brendan Hayes, owns
Knocktoran Stud in Limerick, consignor of a Dubawi (Ire) foal at
Tattersalls in December that fetched 720,000gns.
So, on to the stallions. As we are based in North County Dublin
we decided to work backwards geographically and began our
tour at Ballylinch Stud in Kilkenny with the intention of gradually
working our way home. Now owned by John and Leslie Malone,
Ballylinch is adjacent to the impressive Mount Juliet Hotel and
Golf Course and is managed by John O'Connor, who was there
to welcome us along with David Myerscough, who handles
nominations. Cont. p2

An impressive roster of young stallions were on show, with
Lope De Vega (Ire) (Shamardal) the most expensive at a fee of
i45,000. Sire of a Group 1 winner in his first crop, he has made
a great impression as he faces his third season with runners. He
has made his mark internationally also, with Consort (Ire) and
Hero Look (Ire) entered in the G1 Hong Kong Derby in March.
Domestically, the 3-year-old Blue De Vega (Ger) could be a lively
G1 2000 Guineas candidate for trainer Michael O'Callaghan.
Having bought some weanlings last year by both Lawman (Fr)
(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Dream Ahead (Diktat {GB}), I was
interested to have another look at those two Ballylinch
residents. Lawman has produced a Classic winner in Just The
Judge (Ire), and he could be in for a big year with G1 Racing Post
Trophy winner Marcel (Ire) high on the antepost lists for the
G1 Investec Derby. Dream Ahead made a pleasing start with his
2-year-olds in 2015, bagging a late-season group stake courtesy

former trainer, Andre Fabre, felt this G1 Poule d=Essai des
Poulains winner had the speed to contest a G1 July Cup, and he
will be well supported in his first year.
Mindful that we had a tight schedule to stick to, we regretfully
had to skip what looked like being a quality lunch at Ballylinch
and moved a short distance north towards the village of
Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow, home of Ballyhane Stud (and a
stone=s throw from the all-conquering stable of Willie Mullins).
Joe and Jane Foley run a great operation at Ballyhane and are
involved with almost every aspect of the Thoroughbred life
cycle, with the exception of running an equine retirement home.
Dandy Man (Ire) (Mozart {Ire}), recently tipped for stallion
stardom in the TDN by Kevin Blake, looks in fine shape. His
international reputation is on the rise following the exploits of
Group 1-winning sprinter Peniaphobia (Ire) in Hong Kong, and
he looks set to be busy in 2016. I also had a look at Elzaam (Aus)
(Redoute's Choice {Aus}). This powerful individual has an
important year ahead, as his first runners hit the track in a few
months time. He has provided some good returns to breeders
already in the sales ring off his i3,500 stud fee.
SUNDAY, 24 JANUARY 2016
We picked up the pace and as we drove through Kilcullen, we
thought it would be only right to visit Sea The Stars (Ire) (Cape
Cross {Ire}). It=s probably a good idea for people to go see him
every now and again, as it reminds you what perfection in a
horse looks like. He just has it all: size, athleticism, brilliance,
pedigree and temperament. His brother Born To Sea (Ire)
(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) also looks well, a more compact sort to his
illustrious sibling and he could be very good value at i10,000;
again, we will have a better idea in six months time, but isn't
that the beauty of this game--the uncertainty. Another reason
we were glad to stop into Gilltown was the excellent
refreshments laid out by Pat Downes and the Aga Khan team.
Their beef and Guinness stew was very well received.
Irish National Stud was next up, and Gary Swift gave us the
lowdown on the stallions as they were paraded before us. Their
lynchpin, Invincible
Spirit (Ire) (Green
Desert), knows he is
top dog and he just
has that X-factor that
elite stallions seem
to possess. Swift
reveals that rookie
stallion Free Eagle
(Ire) (High Chaparral
Invincible Spirit | Irish National Stud
{Ire}) was a very sick
horse until recently
and it is only in the last week that he is starting to thrive and put
back on the condition that he lost. He assures us he will be ready
for action when the breeding season kicks off in a couple of
weeks time.
We decided that if we pushed on we would have time to fit in
Kildangan Stud before we finished up for the day in
Yeomanstown, and we timed it perfectly as Goffs auctioneer
Andrew Nolan had just began introducing the stallions to an
assembled crowd as we arrived in Kildangan. The stallions were
shown with military efficiency and it was run like clockwork. The
horses looked magnificent
and the reverse shuttlers
Hallowed Crown (Aus)
(Street Sense) and Shooting
To Win (Aus) (Northern
Meteor {Aus}) both seem
competitively priced at
i7,000 based on their
Slade Power |Darley Europe
racecourse achievements in
Australia. Slade Power (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}) is maturing into a
beautiful- looking horse, while Night Of Thunder (Ire) (Dubawi
{Ire}) surely has great credentials to make it as a stallion. cont.p3

We enjoyed a quick cup of tea and a sampling of some
excellent lemon cake before we drove down Kildangan's avenue,
proactively adhering to the 25kph speed limit just so we could
take in the beauty of the farm. The final stud stop on a busy day
was the O'Callaghan family's Yeomanstown Stud, home of Dark
Angel (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), and now his young Group 2winning son Gutaifan (Ire). The latest addition to the
O'Callaghan family, David's wife Rolline, has settled into her new
role as 'nominations manager' and she tried her hardest to sell
me a Camacho (GB) (Danehill) nomination; food for thought and
well-discussed on the journey home. Speaking of food, the final,
final stop of the day was reserved for Ryan's of Ratoath, well
renowned for their steaks, so three T-bones please!
GOFFS INCREASES NATIONAL SPONSORSHIP
The G1 Goffs Vincent O=Brien National S. at The Curragh will
this year have its purse boosted to i350,000 after Goffs

going on to earn nearly NZ$9 million.

4-YEAR-OLD SERIES STARTS IN CLASSIC MILE
The road to the Hong Kong Derby, the richest domestic race on
the local calendar, begins in earnest Sunday with a competitive
renewal of the Hong Kong Classic Mile at Sha Tin Racecourse.
Trainer John Size, who won last year=s Derby with Luger (Aus)
(Choisir {Aus}), saddles the two highest-rated runners in the
race, and it is not insignificant that leading rider Joao Moreira
has gone for
Thewizardofoz (Aus)
(Redoute=s Choice {Aus})
over Sun Jewellery (Aus)
(Sniztel {Aus}), having
ridden both to victories
in their respective most
recent appearances.
Perfect in three starts
last term, Thewizardofoz
lost some of his luster
Thewizardofoz | HKJC photo
with two losses to begin
the season, including a
defeat at the hands of Blizzard (Aus) (Starcraft {NZ}) on seasonal
reappearance Oct. 25. Third, a spot in back of
G3 Premio Parioli winner Hero Look (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire})
Nov. 29, he reversed form with Blizzard with a soft-trip, but
dominating victory Dec. 27. >Thewizard= will leave from the nine
hole Sunday afternoon.
Sun Jewellery was dealt his first career loss by Dashing Fellow
(Aus) (Duporth {Aus}) in his first try at Class 1 Nov. 11. A
comfortable victory on International Races day Dec. 13--with
Lucky Bubbles (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}) a fast-finishing third--looks
even better, as the second and eighth home that afternoon each
returned to land pattern races next time out. Sun Jewellery has
the 14 hole to overcome and Ryan Moore takes over at the
controls.
One of the more
expensive private
purchases for this year=s
Classics is Werther (NZ)
(Tavistock {NZ}). A Group
2 winner in New Zealand
and Australia and runnerup in the G1 Queensland
Derby, the bay was still no

better than a 16-1 chance
on his local debut Dec. 13. But, with Hugh Bowman in town for
the International Races, Werther raced handy to the pace and
quickened up very nicely to win with something to spare while
looking like extra distance would be no inconvenience. John
Moore goes back to Bowman and it will be interesting to see if
Werther can avoid the second-up syndrome which seems to
come into play more frequently than not. Cont.p7
