Celebrating 50 Years
at LSI
The LSI story began back in 1965 when we opened our
first school in Kensington, London. Fifty years on, our
global network has expanded to our current fifteen schools
spanning eight countries. In that time many thousands
of satisfied students have passed through our doors. We
believe our continued success stems from the quality of our
language learning provision and our determination to help
every student achieve.
To mark our anniversary, here are some memories of LSI
in our earlier days.
2
An Introduction to LSI
Learn and live
the language
We will find the right level for you
Quality inspected homestays
On your first day, we will establish your level and
needs with a written test and an interview, and
place you in the best class for your level.
Contact with other students and local people makes
sure you practise these skills outside the classroom.
Interactive classrooms
International atmosphere
At LSI, languages are taught in a dynamic and
energetic way. We believe active communication
in the classroom is the most effective way of
learning – by speaking you will achieve fluency.
You will meet students from all over the
world and share the experience of learning
a foreign language.
Central locations
Language competence certificate
With centrally located schools in some of the
most desirable cities in the world, LSI students
have access to a wide variety of social and
cultural activities.
You receive a certificate on your last day, stating
the course attended and the level attained, as
proof of your language competence. A report is
available if required.
Multicentre courses
Multicentre Courses allow you to learn and live the
language in more than one LSI location. For more
information see page 16.
Small classes, excellent teachers
Regular individual counselling and effective course
design ensure that you make rapid progress in key
communication skills. Our teachers are carefully
selected, friendly, helpful, and ready to listen.

The First Day and Your Progress
Student Progress
Throughout the LSI programme, we monitor
the academic development and well-being of
each and every student carefully. We ensure
that every student progresses as quickly as
possible and achieves their full potential.
At LSI we are very proud of our high student
satisfaction rates.
The level reached after studying at LSI depends on a variety of factors:
• Duration of the course – the longer the course, the better the results
• Number of lessons – a more intensive course helps you progress faster
• The language level of the student at entry
Final results will always depend on you, the student. Active participation
in afternoon social activities, making new friends from all over the world,
immersing yourself in the local culture, as well as speaking the target
language as much as possible, will greatly affect your achievements.

Learning a language with LSI
LSI Language Learning System
We’re passionate about language learning. That’s why we’re
constantly reviewing the latest trends and methodology in
the field.
Academic staff from every LSI school participate in
the research and development of our programmes.
We ensure that the latest theories of language
learning are considered and evaluated throughout
our centres. That’s why every one of our schools
is a healthy environment for learning. It also
means that all our students benefit from a massive
academic team based throughout 15 schools in 8
different countries. Developed and refined over the
last 50 years, the following points are fundamental
to our language learning system:
Language Immersion
At LSI we believe that the best way to learn a
language is to study in the country where the
language is spoken. We want you to immerse
yourself in the culture and truly ‘live the language’.
This is the most efficient and satisfying way to
learn and remains at the core of LSI’s language
learning system.
LSI Levels
Upon arrival at any LSI school, we’ll give you a
comprehensive language level test so we ensure
you go straight into the right class for you. LSI
levels have been closely matched to the Common
European Framework, TOEFL iBT, TOEIC, IELTS and
University of Cambridge English examinations. To
move up to the next LSI level you need to master
our specific ‘level objectives’, which you can
demonstrate by test scores and class participation.
At LSI we understand that some students learn
faster than others, so our course is tailored for you
as the individual. There are regular opportunities
to discuss your progress with your teacher and
contribute to the weekly plans for your class. This
ensures you get more of what you need, more of
the time.
Through systematic testing, monitoring your class
performance and constant teacher appraisal, the
school academic director will track your progress
and identify exactly when you have mastered the
level objectives and are ready to move up to the
next level. This monitoring and testing allows us to
grade between and within levels, allowing you to
spend more time studying with the students and
materials at the level which is right for you.
Latest Materials
We’re constantly reviewing the latest materials
available for language learning. We provide you
with what our academic team have identified as
being the very best materials currently available
for your level. We are also committed to providing
the latest technology, utilising the most cutting edge
audio, video and web based resources to bring
modern, real world language into the classroom.
Cultural Exchange
We are proud of and committed to the cultural
exchange that happens within our centres. As
you ‘learn and live the language’ you will gain a
greater understanding of the country in which you
are studying. And as our students come from all
over the world, our centres are not just places
to learn languages, but are also places to meet
and share experiences with people from a huge
range of backgrounds and cultures. This is why
our students find our programme to be such an
enriching experience.
Quality Teachers
We understand that our students’ single most
identifiable measure of programme quality is
the teacher. That’s why at LSI we only work with
experienced, highly motivated teachers, qualified
with country specific teaching credentials.
As such we have a systematic programme of
teacher development and performance evaluation.
All of our students are regularly invited to provide
feedback so that we can ensure that your teacher
meets your expectations.
E-LSI (E-Learning from LSI)
Our custom built on line learning system works
alongside our classes to help you maximise your
time with us. Through your unique log in, you can
access your test scores, prepare for and record
your 1-2-1 tutorials with your teacher, and access
a wealth of further learning resources to
supplement and extend your in class learning.
Your test results can also be analyzed to provide
unique learning objectives for you, giving you the
chance to study exactly what you need in order
to progress.
† English programmes only
E-LSI also provides a forum for discussion with classmates and teachers, where you can post your work,
collaborate and enhance your learning experience.†

money and a great choice of course options. Whatever your needs, our
highly trained, friendly staff will ensure that your year is a success.

We continue to check your progress with
regular meetings to make sure you achieve
your aims. Your study plan options can include:
general language classes (see page 8),
examination courses (page 13) and individual
LSI language centre pages for examinations
offered, fluency practice, study skills classes,
Academic English and English for Business.
The ISY 30 programme is offered at all LSI
language centres but please note that other
course options may vary between schools.
We are happy to advise you as to which
programme is most suitable for your needs.
ISY & Your Expectations
As ISY courses are anywhere from 24 to 48
weeks in length we expect our students to
achieve excellent results.
The level reached after an ISY course depends
on a variety of factors:
• Duration of the course – the longer the
course, the better the results
• Number of lessons – often a more intensive
course yields better results
• The language level of the students – the
higher the language level, the more time it
may take to advance to the next level
Final results will always depend on you, the
student. Active participation in afternoon social
activities, making new friends from all over the
world, immersing yourself in the local culture,
as well as speaking the target language as
much as possible, will have enormous impact
on your achievements.
Accommodation
All options are available (see page 22 and
individual LSI language centres in our pull-out).
However, we recommend our carefully chosen
homestays to ISY students, at least for the
first month of your programme – the friendly
welcome you receive helps you settle quickly
into life in a new country.
Work Experience
Work Experience can be arranged for
ISY students (see page 11 for terms and
conditions).

University Pathway Service
The LSI University Pathway Service
is designed specifically to help
and prepare our students to apply
to and thrive at English-speaking
universities or colleges.
In addition to intensive language and academic
tuition of our Academic English programme, our
trained university counsellors help you choose
the right university or college programme. They
assist you at every stage of the application
process, from start to finish. At the same time,
LSI’s academic team work with you to design
a study plan tailored to your needs and then
monitor your progress to ensure that you
achieve these goals wherever possible.
The University Pathway Service includes:
• Preliminary level placement and academic
advice before arriving at LSI
• Assistance with conditional letters of
admission to universities and colleges
(see right)
• Individual study programmes tailored to meet
your needs and goals
• Counselling throughout your course, including
assistance in completing applications, visiting
universities and preparing for interviews.
We can also assist with your application
documents to any of our partner universities
and colleges
• Visa extension advice and support*
* Not available in the UK
Which LSI schools offer the University
Pathway Service?
We offer the service at all our schools in the
UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
It is available to any student booking 12 weeks
or more of our Intensive 30 or Academic
English Programme.
In New Zealand and Australia, LSI works with all
the local Universities, Polytechnics and Tertiary
institutions. Whilst LSI can not offer conditional
letters of acceptance in NZ and Australia, if you
would like to go on to study at these institutions,
we will assist you with your appointments to see
the International Admissions Staff.
LSI University Counsellors
Every LSI school has a trained counsellor
on site to provide advice throughout the
university application process. Our friendly
and professional counsellors work with you
one-to-one to ensure that you choose the
best university programme for you and with
the school’s academic team to monitor your
progress. This ensures that you are on target
to reach the academic standards required by
your chosen university.
How does conditional admission work?
Students apply to a university or college and,
if they meet the academic requirements,
they are issued with a conditional letter of
admission. This letter states which additional
requirements are needed before the student
can begin their programme. These additional
requirements focus on meeting the English
language requirements of the university or
college. LSI’s Academic English programme
and University Pathway Service help you meet
those requirements.
Our counsellors will also assist you with the
university application process from start to
finish, whether you wish to take up a place
at one of our partner institutions or enrol at
another university of your choice.
Conditional letters of admission
Many colleges and universities in the UK, USA
and Canada offer conditional admission to
international students. Conditional admission
is perfect for international students who are
academically qualified but need to improve
their English skills before they begin their
degree programmes.
Students at LSI schools in the UK, USA and
Canada may receive conditional letters of
admission for their chosen university or college
which ensure them places on degree courses
subject to completion of an LSI programme.
Some of LSI’s partner universities in the USA
and Canada accept LSI’s own levels as proof of
English language ability; other institutions may
require either IELTS or TOEFL iBT scores.
LSI can arrange a conditional letter of admission
to your chosen university or college for you
before you arrive. Once you begin your course
at LSI, our academic team prepare you to meet
the additional language requirements for your
course and take you step by step through the
application process.

The Location
COURSE
LSI London Hampstead is located in the heart of
Hampstead Village, a leafy and prosperous suburb
close to central London. Our school is situated on a
picturesque residential street providing a quiet, safe
place to study, yet we are just 15 minutes from Oxford St
and the city centre by Underground, perfectly placed to
enjoy all the attractions of London.

The School
For older juniors (12–17 years), the course combines
English tuition in the mornings with a fun and varied

both in and out of the classroom. For younger juniors
(7–11 years) we offer morning English classes. Our
beautiful school building also houses some of our adult

Family Programme
LSI Family Programme
Designed for parents who wish to combine a
family holiday with their English studies, the
LSI Family Programme allows parents to choose
from a wide selection of adult courses while
their children follow one of LSI's specialised
English programmes for juniors. Classroom
activities and teaching methods are specially
adapted to suit both adults and children,
ensuring that the whole family will have fun
while learning.
The family programme is offered in all
LSI schools where the English for Juniors
programme is run.
LSI Family Programme
for Younger Juniors
(7–11 years)
In addition, for younger students (7–11 years),
LSI runs the family programme at San Diego,
Toronto and London Hampstead. At London
Hampstead and San Diego the adults and
children study in the same building. In Toronto,
the younger juniors attend our summer camp,
only a short train journey from the main school.
Depending on the family size and availability,
LSI can organise accommodation with either a
host family or in apartments. Our centre in San
Diego also offers an on-site child care option
for children under 7 years of age with qualified
teachers who will provide age-appropriate
lessons, activities, and crafts in a fun and
nurturing environment. The younger children
may also accompany their siblings and parents
on activities and excursions, such as the San
Diego Children’s Museum, Balboa Park, and
San Diego Zoo.
