PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear ASOC Members and Friends of our Society
A Happy and Prosperous New Year 2016 to One and All
Our annual Christmas Party was held on November 29th at the studio and proved very popular with a
healthy throng of contributing participants. A big thank you to all those who brought a plate and contributed to the “games pool”.
There followed a short period of quiet and then the Summer Art Experience 2016. The plaudits that
followed particularly related to the accommodation provided for the tutors, the accidental entertainment
provided at the tutors dinner by a local belly dancer, but most of all the centrality and accessibility of
the location. On the downside I have to acknowledge that the Gods did little in our favour in controlling
the climate, but in spite of this the Event proved to be a great success from the perspective of the
tutors, a majority of participants, and happily the management team who are able to report a profit
exceeding $10,000 – the best turnover figures for the past several years.
From an organisational perspective we accommodated the larger classes in air-conditioned rooms,
and attempted to provide some cooling in other areas. We also encouraged one and all to retire to our
three general areas of cooler comfort including the universal lunchroom, and our well-established
“quiet room” when convenient.
My own consideration is to spare a thought for the kids who attend the school when our climate is
sometimes even less obliging. We did attempt to lay on more evaporative coolers only to learn of the
need for a permanent water supply plumbing to the devices – a future consideration as we review
plans for next year, but what we would like to see is a drive to help Campbell High obtain more permanent air-conditioning units as outlined in our “Appeal”.
Moving all the SAE equipment from the M16 studio to our venue and its return is sometimes forgotten
by the majority of participants. Our usual arrangements with an available truck unfortunately fell
through, and we were forced to ask a number of colleagues to front up with larger carrying vehicles. I
particularly thank Bill Causbrook, Jacquie Rogers, Susan Reynolds, Greg Rimes, Richard Vickers,
along with Sonja, Sue, Bill, Chris and Di for the move back; and humbly apologise to those whose
names slipped my mind; but also the untiring help at both ends in setting up and dismantling including
Marie Sexton and Tim Hardy, and others.
Some of you may have recognised that with the loss of Heather Holland to Facebook I have taken on
the dual role of communicating to the membership via Facebook and also by Updates, sometimes with
a bit of inner conflict for me. If you have some ‘arty” news to communicate through either mechanism
please send it to me – as you know Facebook is particularly conducive to colourful displays and graphics, which we cannot use in Updates.
Most recently I had the great pleasure of introducing John Evans to our member’s meeting on Sunday
31 January. Through this we gained access to his talk on “Discovering the Bush on the Boundary” and
to a collection of some 2000 of John’s photographs. BUT use your imagination even beyond this in
working up your entries to the April ACT and Region Catchment Groups Art Exhibition and Prizes.
Remember this is an open competition. I am also pleased to announce that I have procured the services of Professor Ian Falconer, Chair of the ACT and Region Catchment Management Coordination
Group, and a member of the ACT Natural Resources Management Council to open the Exhibition.
I remind you all that The ACT Region Catchment Groups Art Exhibition and Prizes will take place
at ActewAGL House, Braddon on April 11 – 16, 2016. Icon Water remains our principal sponsor and
this year has provided the added incentive of support for some advertising banners along with catering
services for the event. In addition, this year I am to offer a presentation for the Canberra and Region
Heritage Festival on the links between ASOC and the early surveyors of the ACT, which of course has
its origins in our ongoing “History of ASOC Study”. This presentation will be made on the second night
of the exhibition. The Catchment Groups will also mount a continuous slide display of their activities
and related to “Bush on the Boundary” throughout the Exhibition.
Of course hidden in the above news flashes is the subliminal message that we will need a healthy
group of volunteers to move the screens from Cranleigh and install the exhibition on Sunday 10 April
at ActewAGL House, and similarly dismantle and return materials on Sunday the 17th April. My old
school moto “Nil Nisi Labore” – “nothing without work’ keeps ringing in my ears, and I hope yours.

ASOC 2016 Spring Exhibition - Committee Castings
This year I have agreed to cooperatively coordinate the ASOC
2016 Spring Exhibition. Some members already know me, Josie
White. At this early stage I am looking to create a coordinating
committee and allocate tasks to those members old and new who
will volunteer their valuable time to create another successful
Annual Exhibition for the Artists Society where members exhibit
and have their work curated, critiqued and judged. There are
several Art Prizes for the taking. The ASOC members’ Spring
Exhibition is a member organised show and will not happen unless
members club together and make it happen for their mutual benefit. It can be an exciting experience putting an art show together
and a great opportunity to network and get to know other members in your organisation.
The following tasks need an owner to take charge and plug in to the exhibition committee:
Treasurer: receive and pay moneys associated with the exhibition and sales desk management.
Sponsorship/Prizes: follow up and touch base with last year’s sponsors, source any new
sponsors in cash or kind.
Media and Promotional activities.
Invitations: update distribution list and do mail out
Welcome Desk: first and last day accepting paintings (involves checking that hanging requirements are met
Roster: Organise volunteers for all aspects of the exhibition
Card Sales:
Flower arrangements: there is a member who has arranged(excuse the pun) this previously
and I would welcome him/her to step forward again this year……Is there a florist amidst our
membership?
Roadside promotion
The 2015 exhibition was a quality exhibition with good attendance and good sales over the 5
day period. This was largely due to the efforts of all members to make it happen and be a
memorable event.
Please get in touch if you would like to join in and participate

ACT AND REGION CATCHMENT GROUPS ART EXHIBITION AND PRIZES, 2016,
APRIL 11 - 16, 2016.
The Foyer, ActewAGL House, 40 Bunda Street, Civic
(Registered as a Canberra Heritage Festival Event)
The exhibition will run over the second week of the Heritage Festival. We plan to move into the ACTEW
premises on Sunday 10rth April, set up the Exhibition; and hold the Official Opening on Monday 11th
April from 6.00 to about 9.00 pm.
Professor Ian Falconer, Chair of the ACT and Region Catchment Management Coordination Group,
and a member of the ACT Natural Resources Management Council has agreed to open the Exhibition.
The Theme for 2016 is "Discover the Bush on the Boundary". It is no coincidence that the ACT
border primarily follows the watersheds marking out the catchment areas from the surrounding region;
and at the same time those watersheds and catchments also define the pre-existing traditional Aboriginal territory and country. Those catchment areas we know today as our partners the Molonglo,
Ginninderra and Southern ACT catchment groups.
The above “theme” should provide the scope for artists to portray the catchment areas in their natural
state, juxtaposed by the impacts of urbanisation on the environment, its flora and fauna, and the people
of the region, especially on the border-fringes.
Other historical links exist between the Artists Society of Canberra and the architects, surveys and
surveyors of the ACT and region. ASOC has drawn together this historical profile, which will form the
basis of a lecture presentation “ASOC and the Early ACT Surveyors” to be given by Dr Alan J.Jones
on the evening of Tuesday 12 April starting 6.30 pm at the Exhibition venue.

SUMMER ART EXPERIENCE 2016
SUMMER ART EXPERIENCE 2016
A quick reminder that we tried a few new things for SAE
2016 not least of which was a forced change of venue,
and a format that enabled participants to choose 2-day
and 3-day tutorial sessions with a one-day break
between the two. We held three very successful tours for
those interested on the “free day” to the Australian War
Memorial, the National Gallery and the National Portrait
Gallery; and we thank Ray Barnett, Peggy Spratt and
Pam Daniel for assisting with these venues.
Of the order of 41 participants opted for combined 2- and
3-day sessions with the same tutor, another 5 participants changed tutors, while 29 opted only for the 2-day
option and another 25 for just the 3-day option, at least to
our nearest approximation. Incidentally we kept the
bookings open until the last day of registration, which drew in a couple of new faces. Our biggest
disappointment was the loss of a New Zealand colleague who broke her wrist a couple of days before
departure and because of the swelling was not permitted to fly.
I have to say that I was greeted by a large number of
participants with the statement that their experience was
fantastic and the SAE was a fabulous event. My biggest
thank you’s for enabling this to be the case go to Carla
Begbie, Maureen Lawrentin, Hilary Warren and my wife
Dian. I also want to thank Lea Tucker, the wife of the tutor
Ken Tucker who observing our disorganisation in the
morning preparation for morning teas put in her hand to
help out. In my President’s letter I have tried to thank the
people who helped most with establishing the venue, but
we could not have done any of this without the cooperation and help given so freely by Julie Molyneux, the
Business Manager of Campbell High.
This was undoubtedly one of our most successful SAE’s for a number of years, and frankly this was
achieved by tightening our belts on the expenditure side. In that context we must acknowledge the
graphic design contributions made by Karen Silsby, who is a relatively new member; and our decision
to cater using freshly prepared platters from non other than Costco which were collected on a daily
basis for the tutor’s nourishment.
ASOC’s SAE tutors have all said they very much
enjoyed their SAE experience this year, particularly the central location, their “haven for relaxation” hotel accommodation at Mercure Canberra,
and the interaction with all the enthusiastic participants. ASOC’s heartfelt thanks to Tamer Gamea,
Reservations Manager at the Mercure Canberra
for his support in providing affordable accommodation for our SAE tutors and some participants
from interstate, as well as caring for their needs.
The work produced by the participants was
outstanding, but I apologise to non-participant
members for providing only short notice on the
traditional walkaround we held at the end of the
event. In this instance we clearly need to revert to holding the walkaround on the day before the SAE
draws to a conclusion. Nevertheless, we look forward to viewing examples of the participants progress
in ASOC’s 2016 art competitions and exhibitions. I have attached a few selected examples herein. The
other photographs taken are all on display on our Web and Facebook pages.
11
Thank you to the many participants who helped keep urns and drinking water coolers topped up and
especially to Carla for all the help in keeping up stocks for the tea stations during the SAE and tidying
them up every night.
We currently have a “professional” analysis being carried out on the feedback forms and will take the
lessons learned forward to the next SAE development. If participants haven’t already handed in a
feedback form, please do so as soon as possible. Thank you to ASOC Management Committee Member Nyree Mason for volunteering to review the forms and provide a feedback report.

Potential Fundraiser for Campbell High School
Like ASOC, Campbell High School shares a history with the development of Canberra as one of the
first schools to be built to service the population of our developing National Capital. While it offers an
ideal central location for ASOC’s SAE, it would be much more comfortable if there was an advanced
cooling system throughout the school. This may enable more appropriately sized rooms to be available for art classes during the school’s summer holidays. ASOC has been informed that despite
requests by the teaching staff for air-conditioning of all classrooms, the Education Department does
not see this as a budget priority.
Conversations around the tea stations at the SAE revealed a number of participants have had a
relationship with Campbell High School over the years, either through their children or grandchildren,
etc. We now call on you or any other ASOC members who wish to be involved, to form an ASOC subcommittee with a view to developing a fundraising project and to liaise with the school’s business
manager to provide an appropriate cooling system for the school. Energy consumption is not likely to
be a problem since the school has a massive system of solar panels
