Bloom Competition results for AUGUST 2014
Hello fellow Camellians. Yes another spring has sprung. And it is great to see some
welcome rainfall. I am sure I was not the only person struggling last month to the point
of having to irrigate some parts of the garden, especially those exposed to dry westerly
winds. Hopefully September will be far more forgiving.

September also brings the National Congress. This event provides a great opportunity
for meeting likeminded people with similar horticultural passions along with the
opportunity to experience unique plants and gardens. This year’s congress is based in
the National capital, Canberra, and offers a wonderful program that will no doubt be
enjoyed by Congress participants. We look forward to hosting next year’s Congress.
Stay tuned for details and an opportunity to assist in its staging.
Despite the appalling weather last month, our monthly meeting for August had some
stunning blooms benched, along with a visual treat from Juliet Muras, regarding her
recent trip to the ICS in Portugal. The amazing gardens and individual treatment of
specimen plants showed another level of commitment to the growing of Camellias. For
those who did not attend the conference, it was truly an envious admiration to see her
presentation.
Mark in you diaries the Annual Dinner on the evening of 19 November. This event will
be at Killara Golf Club, the same venue as last year. Further details will be confirmed
in the coming weeks. It is a pleasant, relaxing evening that rounds out our year’s
events, as well as awarding the annual bloom competition prizes. I hope that we will
see you there.
Next meeting is the final benching for camellia blooms for this year, so please make a
big effort to come along. Bill Fleming will be talking about his garden ‘Elegans’, which
I am sure most of us have visited. See you then!

Follow up fertilising in summer /early autumn is recommended when bud
development is taking place.

Be generous with your applications of preferred mulch. The benefits of mulching
cannot be overstressed, which include weed suppression, moisture retention,
improving soil structure, encouraging beneficial soil organisms and nutrient
holding ability. Remember to keep the mulch away from the base of the trunk.

Check for any scale, aphids or sooty mould on the older foliage and stems. If
you do locate any of these pests or symptoms, weigh up the severity of the
attack and determine if any control is required (a certain level will be tolerated
with no ill effects). Observation can be the best control measure, especially if
you can identify the cause of the attack rather than just treating the symptom.
Generally, healthy plants will tolerate and resist disease if water and nutrient
supply is balanced, drainage is adequate and competition for light and other
growth factors is limited.

Get those new plants in the ground before they sprout their new growth and
whilst the ground moisture is at the perfect level. The warming soil conditions
over the next few weeks will stimulate rapid root development. There is no need
to fertilise until the plant has established, as there should be sufficient nutrient in
the potting media and the surrounding soil. Use a liquid growth stimulant as per
the recommended directions. Enjoy!

NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Society’s Annual General Meeting (“AGM”) will be held on Monday 20th October
2013 in the Baptist Church Hall, cnr. Park Avenue and Garden Square, Gordon at
7.45pm prior to the normal monthly meeting which will follow the AGM. The AGM will
cover the following:

Confirmation of the Minutes of last year’s AGM;


Receive the Annual Report of the President for 2014;

The Chairman may grant leave to a financial member to bring before the
meeting any matter within the Objects or relating to the affairs of the Society or
Camellias Australia Inc., apart from items that would constitute Special
Business;


Election of Officers and Members of the Committee for 2015;

Receive and consider the audited Statement of Financial Position as at 31st
July 2014 and approve the signing of the Annual Statement by the President
and Secretary;
If there are any members who wish to be nominated as an Officer of the
Society they should, ideally, advise the current President of their nomination
prior to the AGM or attend the AGM and seek a nomination at the meeting prior
to the election of any office; and
All positions are open for nominations and by next month we should have a
clearer picture as to potential officer vacancies for next year. Please also
consider nominating for the Committee as this is a good opportunity to become
involved in the Society’s future.
Cultural Notes for September 2014
What a start to spring; fantastic rainfall that could not have been timed any better. In a
few short weeks the last of this season’s blooms will be hitting the ground, making way
for a surge in lush new growth in preparation of next year’s flowering. It is this fact
which makes the effort that you put in over the next few months critical in determining
the success of next year’s flowering. Jobs for the next few weeks include:


Now is the ideal time if you wish to prune large limbs or provide directional pruning, or just reduce the overall height of your plants. Check also for any deadwood that can be removed . Lighter trimming and general tip pruning is also
carried out at this time. Once new growth explodes, large breakaway shoots can
also be tipped to encourage lower shooting. Always use sharp secateurs and
pruning saws and sterilise between plants ( unless you want to spread a variegation virus!).
Apply dry feeds now so as to maximise their effect on new growth in the coming
weeks. Preferable slow release fertilisers should be encouraged to provide a
consistent nutrient supply rather than a feast/ famine cycle of quick release fertilisers. Another alternative is the application of organic fertilisers, such as cow
manure, that have added benefits for the soil as well as providing vital nutrition.

Notes on our August 2014 Monthly Meeting
This meeting was well attended, which was a little surprising because we had
experienced heavy rain throughout the day. It was pleasing to see such a good
turnout.
President Richie welcomed everybody and spoke briefly about the Berry and
Retic (Illawarra) shows he’d attended. He also highlighted the upcoming
garden shows and Open Gardens (which are mentioned in the calendar on
page 4), as well as a Chinese Arts weekend at Eryledene (Sept 13 &14).
A highlight of the evening was Juliet Muras’s photo presentation of her
attendance at the International Camellia Congress in northern Spain and
Portugal earlier in the year - a visual treat!
The bloom competition results are shown later in the newsletter and Chris
Chapman was the lucky winner of the camellia prize donated by Parkers
Camellias
John Hadlow
Our next Monthly Meeting is on Monday 15th September 2014 at 7.45pm
at the Baptist Church Hall
Program

Opening remarks from President Richie Griffiths

Our main speaker this month is member, Bill Fleming, who will talk
about his well-known garden “Elegans” including the camellias he has
growing;

This month our Quiz will be a little different - see Dale’s comments
below:

Richie Griffiths and Richard Fischer will answer any camellia-related
questions you may have;

Donation Camellia Plant selected by Bill Parker. Tickets are only $1
each or 3 for $2. Thanks to Bill of Camellias-R-Us (see advertisement
on back page) for donating the plant; and

As usual the evening ends with a light supper, and if you are coming
please try and bring along a plate of something to share.
QUIZ “OUR CAMELLIAS”
During the Bloom Judging at the September meeting there will be a
competition between two teams, The Retics and The Hybrids. A name change
will be permitted to the winning team afterwards, if they insist.
The content will be mostly about OUR camellias, so the pace should be quite
brisk. If you have attended a NSW Camellia Research Society meeting within
the last three years there will probably be at least one question that only you
can answer. Your unique contribution will be appreciated, particularly by the
others in your team. A progressive points score will be kept in front of us,
where we can all see it.
Dale Andrews.
