iDesk Project
Samantha Cowley and Don Rudd have announced the new and exciting
iDesk Project. Nundah Activity Centre (NAC) warmly invites all members to the launch of its iDesk Project. The Breakfast iDesk Launch will
be held at 7.30am, Friday 20th March 2015, at the NAC Pr emises at
15 Jenner Rd, Nundah. NAC has secured funding from the BCC Lord
Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund to install 2 iDesks in its main foyer. NAC has extended this to provide 6 iDesk access points, which will
provide free internet access to our 450 NAC members.
IT Training Sessions, an IT Club and an IT Buddy Service.
The iDesk Project extends beyond providing free internet access. NAC
is also providing IT Training Sessions, and is establishing an IT Club
and an IT Buddy Service. With local community organisations increasingly relying on online service delivery, NAC intends to equip the over
60s with the skills to access such services. Please contact Samantha
Cowley on sam@nac.org.au to participate in these activities
Why is NAC providing this innovative service?
In an ever growing online world, NAC seeks to empower the over 60s
by affording them free internet access. This group is vulnerable and at
risk of being excluded from internet use. Current research shows that
by enabling an older person's inclusion in the digital economy, their
access to information is enhanced, their engagement in society and their
mental health improves, and consequently, this
strengthens the economy as a whole.
Additionally, a UK study revealed that the over
60s voluntarily excluded themselves from internet
access because they saw no benefit; and wanted
courses designed for and run by them. A need to
increase this group’s online connectivity exists
and NAC intends to tackle it head on. With its
specialised knowledge and focus, NAC is well
positioned to meet this need.
The iDesk Project is one of a number of projects
being undertaken by NAC to bring technology
into the everyday life of an Older Australian. For
instance, NAC’s federally funded Digital Community Visitor Scheme is a unique and ground
breaking project which is currently being rolled
out across Australia.
NAC General Manager
Don Rudd
NAC intends to have these other services on display at the iDesk Launch. Please RSVP by
Wednesday 18 March 2015 to sam@nac.org.au or
by calling 3266 4500 (see blue advertisement page 4).

NACTIVITIES
From the Desk of the Editor
This is a commonwealth funded HACC program for our frail
aged who either live by themselves or have carers, to meet at the
centre. Two or three Thursdays a month are spent in the centre
doing activities thoughout the day, with lunch, morning and afternoon tea provided. During this time the clients get time to
socialise, while their carers can choose to stay or have some time
off to recharge their batteries.
Hello folks, welcome to
the NAC News March and
April 2015 edition.

This is my third NAC News as editor.
I am still getting to know the people
who make the NAC hum. I enjoyed
talking to Board members Janetta,
Sam and Maryclare about the work
they are involved in, and also Sarah
(see front page and page 4). Don
Rudd has an amazing vision for the
future of NAC, and it is good to see
that there are people of the caliber of
these women supporting Don’s work.

The Nundah Men’s Shed (NMS) held
a Sharpening Course on 11 February.
I was lucky enough to be able to join
the group for an hour in the middle
of the presentation by Phil. It was
great to see 30 plus people attending
and it seems the best outcome was
the building of new friendships. The
NMS will now be involved in the activities of several Men’s Sheds in the
near future (see NMS report page 5).
On the third Thursday of the month we have a themed concert
with live entertainment, morning tea and lunch.
Bus Trips for the 2nd Friday of the month starts
on Friday 13th March.

What is CVS? (Community Visitors Scheme)
People living in residential aged care facilities often
become isolated and lonely because of limited family
and social contacts. The Community Visitors Scheme
is a Commonwealth government funded program that
enables service agencies like Nundah Activity Centre to
provide companionship to these lonely people living by
organising regular friendly visiting from volunteers. A CVS volunteer
generally visits a person once a fortnight for social contact. These visits
can involve having a cuppa, going for walks or taking a resident for an
outing. One of the most important things a volunteer can do is to LISTEN
to a resident. Visitors are often surprised by the wealth of information
they have to share.
Currently, the CVS Program at Nundah Activity Centre has an allocation
of 40 volunteers, some have been making a difference to an aged care
resident for many years. For further information on volunteering please
see Gwen Thiesfield, Co-ordinator Community Visitors’ Scheme or call
Nundah Activity Centre on 32366 4500.

A Royal Occasion
From the middle of November until
Christmas Eve 118 volunteers
manned the Gift Wrapping booth at
Toombul Shopping Centre. What a
fantastic job they did. On behalf of
the Nundah Activity Centre I would
like to thank all the gift wrappers.
Some volunteers preferred to do the
gift-wrapping when it was quiet others preferred to wrap when it
was very busy. We needed all your
help. We are pleased to report that
$9,300 was given to the Activity
Centre.
On Sunday afternoon 15th February
a delicious afternoon tea was held
at the Nundah Activity Centre to
say “thank you”, to our volunteers.
Gift wrappers enjoyed meeting
people they had worked with on the
booth. Some wrappers were fortunate to win some lucky door prizes.
All being well we hope we will be
approached by Centro to do gift
wrapping again this year.

NAC Activities
What We do Now What’s to Come
Our Vision
Janetta Mcdiarmid,
NAC Treasurer and
Projects Manager
Nundah Activity Centre will be the centre of choice of
our senior community for the provision of services
and recreational needs that enhance and energise the
lives of our members and clients with dignity, compassion and commitment.
Meals on Wheels is a community based service for people who are
frail aged or younger and disabled, and their carers. Our meal service enables you to live comfortably in your own home and still enjoy a variety of wholesome meals.
Meals are delivered each day by our volunteers to your home in
hygienic disposable containers. The meal normally contains a cold
soup ready for you to heat up, a hot main course, a dessert and
juice. Special dietary requirements are catered for on request. We
can cater for every reasonable need.
Our Mission
Nundah Activity Centre is a not for profit community organisation dedicated to energising the lives of
everyone in the community focusing especially on
senior citizens in Nundah and surrounding suburbs.
Services are available to all eligible clients, including those in
groups having special needs (cultural, linguistic, physical and intellectual).
You can order meals for as many days of the week as you wish.
Payments for all meals are made weekly in advance and collected
each Monday. Meals are not delivered on weekends or public holidays; but extra frozen meals can be ordered to provide for these
days.
Our Values
We value the contribution of each person makes to
our society in general and our community in particular; and, in return, we provide high quality services
efficiently and equitably to help each person achieve
fulfilment in whatever way we can.
For the Active
All Participants in activities need to be financial
members $5.50 annually.
There is a great Hall and other facilities available
for hire for birthdays, dances, meetings and any
other occasion.
For the Thinker
The Digital Community Visitors Scheme is an exciting addition to our traditional Community Visitors Scheme, which has been reducing loneliness
and isolation for over 20 years. Using the power of
computer tablet technology we are able to extend
our CVS to connect geographically isolated seniors
all around the country. The program is now in the
implementation stage. If you would like to volunteer as a digital visitor or know someone who
would benefit from this program please contact
NAC.

NAC News March April 2015
NAC News March April 2015
Welcome Sarah, Janetta and Maryclare.
NMS (Nundah Men’s Shed)
What’s been happening!
Sarah Xu is the Digital Projects Manager and her main task is to drive the new Digital Community Visitors
Scheme project (DCVS). The DCVS was described in detail in the last NAC News by the NAC visionary
general manager Don Rudd. Sarah is excited about the DCVS as she feels it will make a difference to the
lives of all people involved. Sarah said that the idea of connecting to socially isolated and remote people by
using modern technology (computer tablets) is a brilliant concept and she wants to make it all happen.
The primary focus for this project is on recipients of Commonwealth Home Care Packages (the former
Community Aged Care Packages) who suffer some degree of social or cultural isolation. The age-old remedy - regular friendly contact with a known and trusted contact - is the best solution. However, the computer tablets will enable the horizons to be extended.
11 February 2015.
On Wednesday 11 February 2015, Phil Vardy presented a Sharpening Workshop. There were 30 attendees
so that the workshop was booked out. There were 12 men who came as a group from the RRCMS (Ridley
Road Community Men's Shed - the RRCMS have invited our group (NMS) to their shed for morning tea
on 3 March 2015 ).
Bikes for Life (B4L)
B4L is an Australian not-for-profit organisation, operated entirely by volunteers in Melbourne, Sydney
and Brisbane. The volunteers work towards reducing poverty and social injustice overseas and iAustralia.
They provide those in need, access to sustainable transport, with the simple gift of a bicycle. The bicycles
that are distributed through their programs are recycled and restored by donors and volunteers throughout Australia. They take bicycles that would often become landfill and turn them into a usable transport
source, which are then distributed to remote and impoverished communities in Australia and around the
world. B4L operates in Australia by assisting refugees, disadvantaged and disengaged youth, and neglected communities in remote regions of Australia.

Janetta Mcdiarmid
Janetta Mcdiarmid is on the Nundah Activities
Board as the Treasurer.
Janetta is a director of Accounting and Superannuation Assistance. One of her specialties is to
assist not for profits in understanding the governance and financial aspects of their business.
Bikes 4 Life also operates international programs; currently in Papua New Guinea, Uganda and Cambodia. In the near future they are extending to Cape York, Arnhem-land, Pakistan, Nauru and East Timor.
Janetta is working with NAC on a variety of projects.
Each Wednesday at 9.30am the Nundah Activity Centre workshop welcomes Brisbane based refugees and
volunteers fixing bikes for themselves to get around on a low cost alternative to public transport. This
work also assists Indigenous communities and refugee communities across the world. Everyone is most
welcome to attend these workshops and work shoulder to shoulder with volunteers fixing bikes.
