The high-risk environment necessitates compliance with stringent safety standards. Topec is familiar with such requirements and is applying its knowledge in an expansion of its operations in Africa. This has led to the company winning a number of contracts in the region recently, including delivery of a fourth generator to the Alima floating production unit (FPU). T he Netherlands-based company specialises in the supply of land-based electric power generation installations and oil & gas industry integrated systems for generating and distributing power. Topec operates to DNV GL, Bureau Veritas, ABS and Lloyd’s Register standards and is certified to ASME IX and ISO 90001. Topec’s generator sets can be either diesel or gas driven and can be integrated into an existing electrical system to serve as power, emergency or back-up supply. Essential Generation Currenlty Topec is working on a number of projects in the African region. Included in these is the delivery of a complete turnkey power plant in the Niger Delta. Topec has engineered, constructed and installed an emergency diesel generator and three gas generators. The entire power plant is located on a pontoon, which created a substantial challenge in terms of space. Topec had to provide containers no greater in size than 7 x 3m. Another special project is the design, engineering and construction of an essential diesel generator for the Alima FPU off the coast of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Topec will deliver a topside mounted essential diesel generator. The enclosure is ATEX certified and both enclosure and base are A60 fire protected. The container is equipped with a gas detection system and, when necessary, the air supply can be closed within 1 second. What makes the Alima project so special is the fact that Topec already delivered an emergency generator and two essential generators to the FPU 6 years ago. The addition and integration of a third essential generator to the existing power supply requires the writing of a whole new classification. Adjusting Strategies The focus on growth in Africa has been part of Topec’s plan for a number of years now. The company identified that there were opportunities on the continent and adjusted its strategies accordingly. For over 30 years Topec has been successfully active in Nigeria, generating and distributing power to various branches of industry – industrial land-based systems as well as in the offshore oil & gas sector. w w w. o f f s h o r e - i n d u s t r y.e u Photo courtesy of Topec Topec’s turnkey power plant for the Niger delta. For many years, Topec’s sister company, Topec Nigeria (TPN) has been active in Lagos and has now grown to employ fifty people. Working together, the two companies are striving to expand the portfolio to include more countries in the coming years. As part of this it is looking to increase the brand awareness of Topec to international oil & gas companies. One-Stop Unburdening The company says its strength lies in the principle of onestop-shopping. The engineering, the assembly of the installations, including the manufacturing of control and operating panels and the testing all take place under one roof. Besides that, Topec is capable of installing and commissioning all its products worldwide. A dedicated project manager monitors the customer’s project from start to completion. The company mindset is to unburden customers. i. www.topec.nl OS I 2014 | Vo l u me 7 | I s s u e 6 | 3 7
