Page 3 CMYK ISKCON programs in neighbourhood MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition Page 4 NO HOLDS BARRED By M. A. SADANAND Life’s comforters When it was beyond doubt that cancer had conquered my wife Lakshmi and that the rest of the rigmarole was a waiting game for the final closure, friends recommended the induction of palliative care by experts in the line to give comfort to the prone patient. This draw on the inherent quality of kindness in every human being is about the last cheque drawn from the love factory that marks the final phase in a patient’s bedridden state but, of course, without the slightest inkling that the stop light is not very far away. Luckily for us, the search for quality palliative care led us to Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust at Lakshmi Sundaravadanan Hospital on Poonamallee High Road, where Dr. Subathra and Dr. Asoke Mathew assured us palliative support. When Dr. Mathew and his team visited our home during the 10-week association that followed, Lakshmi was always happy to see his kind and gentle face and hear his soft, reassuring voice that put her at ease. After the session with Lakshmi, he and the palliative care nurse Sona would sit with our family to reassure us regarding her condition. He would invite questions from us and patiently answer our doubts. The first few times after the home visit by Dr. Mathew, I would ask my son Dev to pay the good doctor who took the load of our shoulders each time he visited. But the good doctor always used to wave us off saying there was no charge for kindness. In a world where regular hospitals are run like corporates with a clear eye on profits, the free rendering of service to the suffering patients - even those capable of paying the stiff fees normally charged by big hospitals - looked incredible. After Lakshmi’s passing away on 29th February, we visited Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust to donate the unused medicines and some items of comfort for the patients. Our main objective was to thank these wonderful people with loving hearts, who use the profession not as a mere means of livelihood but as a means of providing care and comfort to those whose lives are drawing to a close. It is a pity that not many in our great city know about this humanitarian team of dedicated professionals. May I pat myself on enlightening readers of Anna Nagar Times and Mambalam Times about this wonderful group! March 27 - April 2, 2016 Damaged EB cable not replaced for over 3 months Sir, During the floods last December, the underground 3-phase EB cable supplying power to two houses on 6th Street, K. V. Koil Street, West Mambalam including mine got damaged. TNEB staff at that time drew a single phase connection from a nearby junction box to provide temporary power connection to the two houses. But till date, the damaged cable has not been repaired or replaced. In spite of repeated complaints to the fuse call office and personal requests made to the AE, no action has been taken to repair the cable even after a lapse of three months. A complaint registered in Amma Call Centre has also not evoked any response. Due to single phase supply, the residents are not able to use high power appliances like geyser, microwave and air-conditioner. I appeal to TNEB officials to immediately attend to the cable fault and restore 3-phase current to the two houses. N. Srinivasan, 5, 6th Street, K. V. But senior citizens are forced to wait in queues for a long time to collect the tokens at the counters. Now, only five tokens are issued at a time which is not sufficient. So I appeal to the authorities to increase the number of tokens considering the senior citizens’ travel needs and to make arrangements to obtain the tokens in an easy way. - Vittal Rao, West Mambalam Sewage water stagnating in storm water drain Sir, Sewage water has been stagnating in the open storm water drain in P. MAMBALAM TIMES their employees. A case in point is a residential apartment complex in Rangan Street, T. Nagar where a big commercial entity acquired some flats as they are close to its showroom. It has provided accommodation to 10 of its male employees in the flat, thereby converting the flat into a hostel. This has led to several problems like water shortage, sewage blocks and security concerns. After several complaints by the residents, the male employees were shifted out and the flat is now occupied by about 10 woman employees. But the main problem still remains. The practice of letting out flats to commercial entities for the greed of higher rent defeats the very purpose of the concept of apartment living. There is no guarantee that these commercial establishments will not use these flats for commercial activities in the future. While on this, we wonder how hostel accommodation can be provided without getting appropriate approval from the authorities. As per the Act passed by the Government of Tamilnadu in respect of providing accommodation in hostels particularly for women, severe conditions are imposed. Safety and security are another issue as one does not know the background of those who are accommodated. Sometime ago, the police department sought details of the tenants staying in residential complexes. It is not known whether the department has obtained information in such cases. What security and safety do the residents have? We, therefore, request the authorities to take suitable steps to regulate the activity of converting residential flats into hostels. If no action is taken, the Residents Association should not hesitate to move legally to restore the fundamental rights of the residents. - T. March 27 - April 2, 2016 By Our Staff Reporter The low lying central median on the 20-ft wide Nandanam 1st Extension has been causing hindrance to motorists for several years. The 2-ft wide median is lined on both sides by 6-inch high stones. It leaves a usable width of only 9 feet on both sides of the busy road. Motorists often ride over the uneven median to overtake other vehicles which could lead to accidents. 2-wheeler riders could flounder and fall as the median is not clearly visible at night. G.
