Hello,
We just celebrated the holiday of Passover or Pesach. This is
one of my favorite holidays for several reasons. First, it has a
strong home based element in the Seder. I have great memories
of walking home from school the days immediately prior to the
first Seder and smelling my mother’s homemade gefilte fish
cooking on the stove. For many reading this, making gefilte fish by grinding the
pike and whitefish, rolling into balls and cooking for hours seems from a bygone
era and I guess it is today. But walking into a home with that aroma engulfing
you for me was wonderful.

laws; only kosher meats, no mixing of meat or dairy and we used glass dishes
throughout the week. Another tradition was to have guests at our Seder table.
With a family of seven, we already started with a sizeable crowd, but rarely do I

Like many holidays, Passover to me is about family. Being the youngest of five,
I was the last to leave the house, but for many years it was the only time all
seven of us would be together. No matter where we were living, we made a
special effort to be home for Seder. That lesson has not been lost as we do
whatever possible to be sure our children are with us during Passover. Sitting
around the table, singing, laughing and enjoying the moment is as important to
me as telling the story of the Exodus from Egypt. Being around a Seder table is
our way of ensuring the story is told every year and will continue to the next
generation. May we go from strength to strength.

Leon

Class of 2016
On behalf of Congregation Beth El and the Eric J. Marinoff Memorial College Outreach Fund, we congratulate all of our
Graduates! The College Outreach program attempts to maintain a connection between Beth El’s college age students
and their heritage and traditions and to foster their Jewish identity. We will present our high school graduates with a
special gift to take with them to college. We hope to bring a little of the holidays to our college students by sending them
packages throughout the year.
We ask all of our members with children in college to contact the office with their children’s addresses while in college so
that their children can partake in the program. It is our hope that Eric’s legacy encourages others to proudly continue to
participate in Jewish customs while in college and beyond.

Education & Youth
The Force was with Beth El for Purim. Star
Wars Purim was a great success. It was an
evening of community and celebration. To
kick it off the FJLC students made
costumes and enjoyed a parade to show
off their creativity. We had an evening of
Ruach with over 150 members and guests
enjoying dinner. The 10th Grade
Ha’Moadon students performed a Purim
play for the Children’s Service. The kids
had a great time sounding the groggers!
The Children’s Service wrapped up with
the always popular Ice Cream Sundae
Party. The night’s
festivities continued with
the Adult Service and a
Megillah Reading by our
own Rabbi Obi Wan
Kenobi. Thank you to all
of the parent volunteers
and FJLC teachers who
made the night a
success!!

B’nai Mitzvah at Beth El
Hi, my name is Maya
Young . My parents are
Lauren and Steven
Young. I’m becoming a
Bat Mitzvah on May 14,
2016. For my Bat
Mitzvah project I have
been helping out at
Pennsbury Falcons
Firefly’s Cheer Program.
It’s a cheer program for
people with special
needs. I work with the
girls, set up mats, and
teach cheers. I have tons of fun there and have met some
very nice girls.
I enjoy dancing (everywhere), cheerleading, and hanging
with my friends. My favorite subject in school is science
because I love doing experiments. I take dance at
Contempro Dance Theater. I also love baking cookies,
cakes, and brownies. I also love decorating cakes.
I love Beth El because I get to come two or three times a
week to see my friends and family and to learn Hebrew.
The teachers have taught me so much over the years and
I couldn’t thank them enough. Leading services isn’t
scary when you know all the people around you. I
consider Beth El my second home.
I can’t wait to have my Bat Mitzvah!
Hi. My name is Jason
Schachter. My parents
are Bonnie and Ian
Schachter. I am 13 years
old and in 7th grade at
Murray Avenue Middle
School. I will become a
Bar Mitzvah at Beth El on
June 4, 2016.
I like video games,
reading, soccer and
baseball. I live in
Huntingdon Valley with my parents and my brother Aaron.
I enjoy getting together with my friends and family.
For my Bar Mitzvah project, I have been volunteering for
JRA, the Jewish Relief Agency, packaging and delivering
boxes of food. I really like delivering the food and I plan
to continue volunteering there.

TORAH FUND
The Best Ever Spring Sale
Nat'ah Karem
and she plants a vineyard
by her own labors
40% off
This year's Torah Fund theme, from the poem Eishet Chayil
(Woman of Valor), in chapter 31 of the Book of Proverbs,
paints an idealized portrait of a woman of piety, determination,
creativity and industry. The phrase, "nat'ah karem" (Proverbs
31:16b) describes an industrious woman as one who
organizes and carries out a plan, in this case, planting a
vineyard.
Her productive activity will benefit future
generations.
The symbolic power of the planting metaphor is not lost on
supporters of Torah Fund. This campaign invites each of us to
plant for the future with great foresight. We help to provide
Conservative/Masorti communities with well-educated Rabbis
and Cantors; Educators and Administrators for Day Schools,
Synagogue Schools, Summer Camps, and Synagogues; Social
Workers; Professional and Lay Leaders; and Scholars. They
bring the religious, spiritual, and educational sustenance that
our children and grandchildren will need for the future.
Our hope is that each woman in our congregation will consider
supporting this important campaign. If you would like to make
a gift to this year’s Torah Fund campaign please call Bonnie
Abrams at 215.321.0766 or email, babrams157@gmail.com.
All payments on pledges must be made by May 31, 2016.

The Jewish Federation's food pantry at KleinLife in
Northeast Philadelphia is currently seeking
volunteers on select Fridays from 10am-1pm as it
expands its hours to serve more clients. The Choice
Food Pantry at KleinLife features an innovative
model where the clients get to choose what food
they receive (rather than a pre-packaged box) and
use a touchscreen to make their selection. Anyone
interested in volunteering can email Jeremy Heller
directly at mail@jeremyheller.com.
No one really expects the
need of having to buy
cemetery plots. It is a
wonderful benefit of belonging
to Congregation Beth El of
Yardley. There is no better
time to buy than the present
time, before you have the
need. We want to help you
make the choice before the
emotional time after a death.
Many Funeral directors
encourage the pre-need
arrangements of all of the aspects of the funeral,
burial, and monuments.
The Cemetery Committee can offer you the time to
select a plot at the cemetery or just by reviewing our
plot maps and photographs. King David Memorial
Park is located in Bensalem, PA. Beth El has over
400 plots in section R. Many are already owned and
reserved. In 2013 the Board of Directors approved
the price of $1500 per plot. This is far below the
price for the general public making a request at King
David. A Family Gravesite includes four plots and
costs $6000. These charges are transacted with the
synagogue only and you may not deal with King
David or other congregants directly for the purchase
or sale of any plots in Section R. When a plot is paid
in full the owner is granted the rights of sepulcher
and these rights are shared with their heirs even if
they are not members. Beth El does not sell plots to
non-members of the congregation. In the event of an
owner moving or not needing their plots, they may
return their papers for a refund less 10 % of the
purchase price. The price of the plot does not
include any services, openings, burial, vault, or
monument charges.
For more information please call Michael Weinberg,
Cemetery Committee Chairman @215-321-1312
