Frequency shift keyed audio
tone or fiber optic channel
for protective relaying.
NS40
Frequency Shift Keyed
Audio Tone/Fiber Optic
Application
■ Transfer-trip and line relaying
Frequency Shift Keyed
■ NS40 uses multiple mediums
(Leased lines, Microwave, Fiber Optic)
■ 4 to 25 ms channel speeds
■ Built-in diagnostics
■ Frequency programmable
DESCRIPTION
The FSK audio tone equipment can
be configured as single or dual channel, for uni-directional or bi-directional operation. Terminations can
either be 2 or 4 wire audio
(600 Ω) or fiber optic. Fiber optic
modems are available for multimode (820 nm) or single mode
(1300 nm) fibers. The configuration
chosen depends on the protection
requirements and the degree of
security needed for the associated
transmission scheme. Reliability of
the tone equipment is enhanced by
built-in test facilities which permit inservice testing of each channel in a
local loop or checkback mode.
Typical protective relaying schemes
for which the FSK audio tone equipment is specifically suitable are:
■ Direct transfer trip for transformer
and shunt reactor protection and
breaker failure protection
■ Direct underreaching transfer trip
■ Permissive overreaching or underreaching transfer trip
Both the transmitter and receiver are
fully programmable to any frequency in the audio range, from 1190 to
3315 Hz. The channel spacing may
be 170, 240, 340, or 1000 Hz, with
speeds from 17 to 4 ms.
The basic security of the receiver is
derived from the received guard signal. The
dependability of the receiver is enhanced by
the automatic gain control’s very fast response
to a reduction in signal level. The receiver has
multi-mode squelch protection which can disable the receiver preventing potential false
operations. A unique feature of the receiver is
its ability to receive and detect guard and trip
signals simultaneously. This two signal receiving capability permits alien trip tone detection
ahead of the combiner logic.
A logic module is available to allow the user
to enhance security or dependability. A level
meter can be included with each channel.

CS51/61/71
Frequency Shift Keyed
Power Line Carrier
Application
■ Transfer trip and line relaying
Frequency Shift Keyed
■ CS51/61/71 uses power line medium
■ 4 to 25 ms channel speeds
■ Continuous monitoring
■ Built-in diagnostics
■ Frequency programmable
DESCRIPTION
The CS51/61/71 transmitter-receiver
provides power line carrier protection channels for permissive or direct
transfer trip relaying schemes and
unblocking relaying. It can be either
one-way, or two-way where line protection or breaker failure protection
is required. It can be supplied for
either single or dual channel operation. This frequency shift keyed (FSK)
system operates over power trans-
mission lines in the frequency range
of 30 to 500 kHz. The three different
models available offer different
bandwidths and channel speeds.
As the FSK carrier equipment
requires only a narrow band of frequencies, “single-frequency” line
tuning and traps can usually be
employed in the line-coupling circuits, even when two way dual channels are used. RF hybrid units are
still required to separate closely spaced transmit and receive frequencies.
The CS51/61/71 channels include an optional
logic module which allows the optimum balance between security and dependability. A
unique squelch circuit is included in the
CS61C and CS71C models. Which greately
enhances the security of the channel.
Isolation of all input keying and output circuits provides improved reliability. Shielding
is provided to reduce RFI.

DESCRIPTION
The CS22 transmitter-receiver provides protection channels for permissive or direct transfer trip relaying schemes and unblocking relaying. It can be either one-way, or twoway where line protection or breaker
failure protection is required. It can
be supplied for either single or dual
channel operation. This frequency
shift keyed (FSK) system operates
over analog microwave systems in
the RF Baseband region. The three
different models available offer different bandwidths and channel
speeds.
The CS22 channels include an
optional logic module which allows
for optimum balance between security and dependability. A unique
squelch circuit is included in the
models. Isolation of all input keying
and output circuits provides
improved reliability. Shielding is provided to reduce RFI.

DESCRIPTION
The CS28A transmitter-receiver provides power line carrier protection
channels for blocking type relaying.
The keyed carrier system operates
over power transmission lines in the
frequency range of 30 to 500 kHz.
The CS28A can be configured as a
wideband channel for use where
relay clearing times are critical, as in
EHV applications, or as a narrowband channel for use where longer
clearing times are permissible, as
with lower voltage lines or when
electromechanical relays are used.
CS28A channels accomplish simultaneous, high speed, and selective tripping by preventing tripping on external faults.
When a protected section is faulted
no carrier signal is transmitted and
both terminals trip simultaneously.
When an external line is faulted, the
carrier signal is transmitted, effectively blocking the non faulted line.
In addition to its relaying function, the
CS28A can be used for voice communication, checkback testing, and low
speed supervisory control or telemetering. Other available modules
include loop test, and an alarm and
level meter module which indicates
reserve signal and RF power levels.
The CS28A comes in a modular package which features a removable glass
viewing door, a compact 3 RU size,
slots for inserting modules, and
sequence of events recording outputs.
