How “international”, you may ask? Typically, in one of my average classes, I will have students from as many as 12 different countries in addition to Estonia. Sometimes, I have to admit that it is truly a challenge for me, as a lecturer, to find common ground to reach students with so many cultural backgrounds. But, somehow, it all comes together, and the multicultural aspects really make it more interesting for both myself and the students. I love multicultural experiences myself. Perhaps, this is because I am from New York.” Gary Tanner has graduated with the highest honours with a MBA from New York University’s Stern School. Professionally, Gary has a 20+ year career that spanned most major areas of finance: corporate treasury in a multinational company; capital markets working on Wall Street; and commercial banking working for a European bank. “As a result, since my main experience with finance is as a professional and not as an academic, my lectures are constantly full of real life examples supplementing the usual theoretical “textbook” material.” Engin Unlubas MBA Turkish “I started my studies here after finishing my degree as a building engineer in Turkey. I am proud that I’m studying at TUT and truly recommend students from all over the world to come and study here.“ 27 International programmes MASTER OF Computer and Systems Engineering The Computer and Systems Engineering Master’s programme focuses on the education of designing and using modern complex computer systems. Nowadays computer systems are used more or less everywhere, they are extremely diverse and most of them are “invisible” to users. Such systems include not only traditional PC-s and sophisticated supercomputers, but also computer systems “embedded” into cars and mobile phones, for instance. Most of these computers are interconnected via various wired and wireless networks and do not work in isolation. These embedded systems can be either stand-alone items or an integral part of a larger system and represent the combination of software and hardware designed to perform specific functions. When studying the Computer and Engineering Systems programme, students are exposed to systems design and modelling, computer architectures and programming, to name few of the topics. Exposure to those topics will position students well for jobs at small, medium and large companies. Their jobs will involve defining, designing and using embedded computer system in areas such as automotive electronics, consumer devices, telecommunications, etc. The Computer and Systems Engineering programme is supervised by two departments of TUT – Department of Computer Engineering (DCE) and Department of Computer Control (DCC). Students can choose between two of the following specialisations: • Computer Systems Design (supervised by DCE) focuses on the modelling, analysing, designing and testing of complex systems consisting of both hardware and software components. • Automation and Systems Engineering (supervised by DCC) focuses on the modelling, analysing and designing of automation and computer control systems. SPECIALIZATION The new era of distributed embedded computing and control systems revolutionizes the world of IT! Student`s Enterprise Practice Advanced integrated circuit technologies enable the integration of complete systems on one microchip. The demand for ultra low power and “green” computing in networked on-chip and off-chip “clouds” generates the requirement of new sophisticated integrated hardware/software concepts: scalable, run-time adaptive and reliable multiprocessor and many-core systems and integrated networked hardware/software service architectures will replace classical computer architectures. The international master programme “Computer and Systems Engineering” (COMPSYS) provides leading edge education for the next generation of hardware/software system and control engineers. The integrated concept of hardware and software education meets future industrial requirements profiles, where pure hardware or pure software skills are not sufficent to successfully design and program sophisticated embedded systems. The programme prepares the students for a successful start in Estonian or international IT companies or for a research career and makes them ready for working in interdisciplinary and international design teams. So join this international master programme and be prepared for the new future trends in IT! 28 Master’s studies 120 ECTS fully in English 2 years Master of Science in Computer and Systems Engineering Tuition fee 2012/2013: 2820 EUR per academic year Thomas Hollstein is Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Tallinn University of Technology (TTU). Great variety of student clubs & organizations Aya Ibrahim Vice-Chair on International Affairs of the Student Council of Tallinn School of Economics and Business Administration (TSEBA) Student of Bachelor of International Relations Egyptian There are always very distinct things that define a student’s time in TUT. Academia aside every student seeks a place outside the classroom where he/she can “find” themselves, in an attempt to shape their personalities at this critical time in their lives. For some it might be enjoying the notorious Tallinn Night Life, for others it’s joining a sports team or honing one’s musical talents by joining a band. For me it was working for the TSEBA Student Council. Take part in IC events, enrichen your student years and get lifetime friends from Estonia and from all over the world! More: ic.tipikas.ee Student Activities An active student life of TUT can be a model to other universities. There are 40 active student organizations.
