CHANCE Overhead Switch Motor Operator Specification 1.0 GENERAL 1.1 This specification covers electrical, mechanical, and material requirements for the overhead switch motor operator for use on distribution voltage lines. 1.2 The motor operator shall be used in conjunction with overhead gang operated switches to sectionalize (or isolate) a portion of a primary feeder. 1.3 The standard motor operator shall have a torsional output and is adaptable to reciprocating outputs. 1.4 The motor operator shall be capable of operation at -40oC to 65oC. 2.0 MOTOR ® 2.1 Output torque for the torsion model shall be 3,000 in-lb peak. Output force for the reciprocating operator shall be 600 lb thrust peak. Output torque or thrust shall not exceed these values in order to avoid damage to switch insulators. 2.2 The motor operator shall have a life rating in excess of 2,000 open/close cycles. 2.3 The operator shall utilize a maintenance-free sealed bearing 24V DC motor. 2.4 Circuit breaker protection shall be supplied to guard against overcurrent and locked rotor conditions. 2.5 An electrical brake preventing rotation of the shaft when the motor stops shall be supplied as standard. 2.6 The motor shall be reversible to accommodate both clockwise and counter clockwise opening of the switch. 2.7 Opening speed shall be 0.65 seconds to complete 90o of travel. ® POWER SYSTEMS, INC. Bulletin No. 14-9401 3.0 POWER SUPPLY 3.1 Input voltages and normal load currents shall be: 24V DC 120V DC 240V AC 3.2 30 Amp DC 6 Amp AC 3 Amp AC A 24V DC, 2 amp continuous power supply shall be standard on all motor operators for RTU or communications equipment power. 4.0 CONTROL PANEL 4.1 The control panel shall feature rocker switches for on/off and local/remote operations. The on/off switch shall have a power status light. 4.2 Push button switches shall be used for opening and closing operations. Open and closed indicator lights will provide additional evidence of switch status. 4.3 A low battery alarm light shall be provided in the control panel and shall signal when battery charge falls below 21 volts. 4.4 The back of the control panel shall include fuses, circuit-breaker protection, power, status, and control connection plugs. 4.5 All connections shall be made with quick-disconnect plugs in keeping with a modular design for ease of maintenance. 4.6 All connections entering or exiting the motor operator enclosure shall be individually surge protected with MOV’s. 4.7 The control panel shall have a four decade counter to count the number of open operations. 5.0 SCADA MONITORING AND CONTROL 5.1 The motor operator shall be SCADA capable. Incorporated connection points shall include the following: (Non wetted, rated 125V, 2 amp, AC or DC) (Wetted, rated 24V DC, 2 amp) Status monitoring: Switch open Switch closed Remote/local Low battery Four Auxiliary contacts Control: Open Close -2- 6.0 MECHANICAL CONNECTIONS 6.1 The torsional (rotating) motor operator shall accept both 1.25" and 1.5" IPS control pipe. 6.2 The reciprocating motor operator shall accept 0.75" to 1.25" OD control pipe. 6.3 A safety shroud shall be provided with the reciprocating operator option. 6.4 The motor operator can be decoupled from the control pipe via a decoupler shift handle. The decoupler shift handle shall be located inside of the cabinet to prevent unwanted tampering with the unit. 6.5 A manual operating handle shall be provided. When the handle is removed from its storage position, and the operator is coupled, all electrical controls shall be locked out. 6.6 Output shall be easily adjustable from 75o to 120o for torsion controls and from 6" to 10" for reciprocating controls. 6.7 The torsional motor operator shall have piercing couplings. 7.0 CABINET 7.1 Unit cabinet shall be a NEMA 4 enclosure with padlock provisions. 7.2 A light switch shall be provided that automatically operates the cabinet light and LEDs when the cabinet door is opened. 7.3 The Standard cabinet will provide space only for the motor operator. If an RTU is to be installed in the same cabinet, the Extended cabinet option shall be supplied. The exterior cabinet dimensions shall be as follows: Standard Extended width height depth 20" 20" 12" 24" 40" 12" 7.4 The cabinet material shall be painted steel or aluminum. 7.5 The cabinet shall be vented. 7.6 The cabinet shall have a door stop. -3- 8.0 OPTIONS 8.1 The battery option shall include batteries and a wiring harness that will provide minimum of 25 open and close operations without AC power. 8.2 The heater option shall have a thermostatically controlled 300 watt 120V AC heater to prevent condensation inside the unit. 8.3 An optional power supply that provide 12V DC, 2 amps continuous, and 7 amps peak for communication shall be available. 8.4 An optional reciprocating mechanism w/travel other than 6" to 10" shall be available, if required, specific travel distance shall be stated with order.
