The 32 National Systems Conference was organized by the Electrical
Engineering Department on Dec. 17-19, 2008 under the aegis of the Systems
Society of India. The theme of this year's NSC was 'Energy System –
Optimization andConservation'.
The three days proceedings of the Conference comprised of
presentations by various researchers, academicians, and industrial
participants along with an industrial exhibition from some leading
organizations.Atotal of 270 delegates took part in the Conference.
The conference was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Prof. P. S.
Satsangi, Chairman, Advisory Committee on Education, Dayalbagh
Educational Institutions, Agra and Founder President of the SSI on Dec. 17,
2008. This was followed by award ceremony in which Prof. Satsangi was

Progress of Construction Work at Greater Noida Extension Centre
The GNEC Construction Monitoring Group visited the site on
Jan. 17, 2009 for an 'On the spot evaluation of the progress'. The
Groupwasaccompanied by the Head (Infrastructure) of EILMr.S.N.
Bhatnagar, his team mates and also the Project Manager and
Construction Manager of the Construction Contractor M/S Samiah
International Builders Pvt. Ltd.(SIBPL). Following points were noted:
• The GNEC land is a low lying area and was totally submerged in
water just before the construction started w.e.f. 19.09.2008. As
per plans, the entire area shall be graded up on an average of
aprox. 2 m so as to avoid future water logging.
• The bearing capacity of the soil in GNEC land is in the range of
approx. 6 T/M2 and also the liquidity index is too high (cohesionless soil). This has necessitated pile foundation for all the
buildings. In all 785 concrete piles each having depth 12-22
meter are already driven in.

A one day orientation program on “Exotic radioactivity and the shell
model” was held on Dec. 21, 2008, at the S. N. Bose Auditorium, Bose
Block, Physics Department, preceding the DAE symposium on Nuclear
Physics. Over fifty participants comprising of mainly Ph.D. students and
young researchers attended the course. The course was coordinated by
Prof. A.K. Jain and lectures were given by Prof. Enrico Maglione,
Padova, Italy (Theoretical aspects of proton emission from proton rich
nuclei), Dr. Ajit K. Sinha, Director, UGC-DAE, CSR-Kolkata (Proton
Radioactivity – Experimental aspects), Dr. P.Arumugam, IITR (Meanfield
of triaxially deformed nuclei and application to proton radioactivity), Dr.
Rajdeep Chatterjee, IITR (Direct and indirect approaches in nuclear
astrophysics), and Dr. P.K. Rath, Lucknow Univ. (Double beta-decay and
nuclear structure physics). The course concluded on a successful note
preparing the students for working in these advanced areas.
