Introduction
For over 30 years, Brigade Electronics has single-handedly promoted the cause of
‘Reversing Safety’, helping to save thousands of lives and prevent many times more
accidents through its efforts.
Today, the company commands more than 65 per cent of the reversing alarm market
in Europe and exports its range of vehicle safety alarms and CCTV systems to many
countries as far a field as Australia, Africa and the Americas.

From its global HQ in Kent, the company markets its products via subsidiary
companies in Germany, Italy and the USA, as well as in partnership with over
50 specialist distributors worldwide. Brigade’s R & D team has built up a range of
products that covers the complete spectrum of reversing safety systems and CCTV
solutions for ‘all round visibility’ plus parking sensors, digital video recorders, heavy
duty work lamps, beacons and mirrors.
Safety doesn’t cost – it pays
Accidents are costly and traumatic events that transport and mobile plant fleets can ill afford. The average cost
of a reversing accident, excluding personal injury and other hidden costs, was judged to be £469 in 1999 when
the ‘Accident Analysis and Prevention Journal’ undertook its study into the problem. Today the costs are likely to
be considerably higher. The cost/benefit analysis for a 1,200 truck transport company with a vehicle life of eight
years, revealed that rear end damage costs were £521 per vehicle, per annum – that’s £625,000 per annum
– or nearly £5 million in total over the eight year life of the fleet! So investing in a Brigade safety system can
significantly reduce this cost, with the savings going directly on the operating company’s profits.

Pioneers in reversing safety
Brigade has worked hard to pioneer ways to reduce the
25 per cent of all work related road deaths that the HSE
estimates are caused by reversing vehicles. We produced
the first ever reversing alarm and rear detection system in
Europe and the first rear view CCTV system in the UK.
All-round visibility, navigation and mobile surveillance
According to Brake, the road safety charity, vehicle ‘blind
spots’ were a contributory factor in over 1,500 crashes in
2005, 21 of which were fatal! To help reduce this figure
Brigade has developed a range of blind-spot cameras
and mirrors, to help give drivers of buses and trucks
a clear view of pedestrians and cyclists on all sides of the
vehicle. In public service and commercial vehicles, CCTV
systems are playing an important role in security, insurance
claim management and navigation as well as safety.
Brigade can offer a range of camera systems, mobile digital
recording units and navigation solutions to meet this
growing need.
Better reversing safety
Brigade has also pioneered the development of an
innovative reversing alarm that provides clearer and more
accurate warning than traditional alarms. Unlike traditional
narrowband alarms it uses broadband sound, which is
instantly and unambiguously locatable. Also, unlike
narrowband alarms, it does not cause a noise nuisance

‘Noiseless’ reversing alarms.
Reversing alarms are vital for vehicle safety yet their very
use can cause noise nuisance and irritation to workers
and local residents, especially when used out of normal
working hours.
The bbs-tek® alarm emits a unique “shh… shh…” sound
which solves the problem. Its broadband sound is
multi-frequency, replacing the narrow frequency band
of conventional alarms. Its sound is instantly locatable
so you immediately know which vehicle is reversing
and where it is coming from. So it is much safer than
conventional narrowband alarms. It is directional,
concentrating the sound in the danger area so reducing
noise nuisance. Broadband sound also dissipates more
quickly beyond the danger zone, so it is much less of a
nuisance to local residents and is less likely to be ignored
by workers due to over exposure to the warning sound.

Not all reversing bleepers are the same!
Of the four types of sounder (Dome Speaker, Driver, Conventional
Cone Speaker and Piezo) our unique and patented Dome
Speaker design is the best option for high sound pressure level
(SPL) models. It offers superb sound quality from a relatively low
current consumption unit. It is tough, durable and guaranteed
waterproof (IP68).

Next come Driver models. These are also tough, durable and
guaranteed waterproof offering good sound quality for high
SPLs. Conventional Cone Speakers are a good option for
medium and low SPL models, but are unsuitable for high
SPL models over 102dB(A). Most budget and light duty alarms
use Piezo sounders, which are good for light duty applications
but are not so tough or reliable and the SPL may reduce in low
temperatures. Their piercing, high frequency sound may cause
irritation and noise nuisance.

Self-Adjusting Smart BACKALARM® –
Digital Self-Adjusting Volume
Takes the guesswork out of sound pressure level (SPL) selection. Ideal for vehicles or machines working in
areas with widely differing ambient noise levels, where a fixed-volume reversing alarm will be either too quiet
in loud environments (very hazardous), or too noisy in quiet environments (irritating and a nuisance).
Self-Adjusting Smart BACKALARMS, featuring digital sound sampling and a listening profile matched to
worksite noise, are the world’s most technically advanced self-adjusting reversing alarms. Continuous
self-adjustment of their SPL reduces unnecessary loudness and irritation to operators and local communities.
Self-Adjusting Smart BACKALARMS feature a small hidden and highly robust microphone by which they
measure the ambient SPL. They then self-adjust their own SPL, up or down, to maintain just 5-10 dB louder.

Dual Function and Dual Tone Warning Alarms – Ideal
for manlifts and specialist vehicles / machines
Dual tone alarms provide audible warning in hazardous areas associated with vehicles and mobile equipment. Dual
tone sound warns of dangers specific to certain machines or equipment (lowering scissor lifts, rotating drive shafts,
extending outriggers, etc.). Dual function alarms have two trigger wires and give both a conventional ‘bleep’ tone for
reversing and either a dual tone or constant tone (depending on the model) warning for other dangers.

Blind Spot Mirrors
Dobli wide view blind spot mirrors are specifically designed to
provide truck drivers with clear visibility of the area on the
nearside of the vehicle. Fitted to the front of the truck they are
viewed through the windscreen. They meet the requirements of
the latest EU legislation for blind spots in trucks (2003/97/EC)
and a single Dobli mirror will cover not only the expanded Class
IV and Class V mirror areas, but also a large area to the
nearside of the cab that otherwise remains ‘blind’ to the driver –
even after meeting the requirements of 2003/97/EC. Dobli
mirror kits are designed to fit all leading truck brands.
Brigade also offers a range of half-moon and full-moon bubble
mirrors for maximum visibility on forklift trucks and mobile
machinery.

Navigation
Add navigation to your Brigade CCTV system to provide
travel/route information in addition to visibility in and around the
vehicle. On engaging reverse gear the rear view camera will
replace the satellite navigation information on screen.
Either connect a navigation system to your existing
Brigade CCTV or use our special splitter cable to connect
a Brigade reversing camera to your existing Siemens VDO
navigation system.
Low bridge warning system
Avoid bridge strikes with the Bridgeclear low bridge warning
system. Bridgeclear uses GPS together with its own database
to provide an early in-cab, audio and visual warning on the
Brigade monitor if the vehicle is approaching a bridge that is too
low for it. Simple to install, the system can be hidden away
under the driver’s seat.

Bridgeclear – low bridge warning system
Over 2,000 bridge strikes take place every year in the UK, costing more than £50million. A single bridge
strike could cost you many thousands of pounds in repair costs to the bridge and your vehicle, but this
disastrous situation is preventable by adding the Bridgeclear module to any Brigade vehicle CCTV system.
Bridgeclear uses GPS together with a comprehensive database of low bridges in Great Britain to provide
drivers of tall vehicles with audible and visual warnings of potential bridge strikes. This enables the driver to

Digital video

The MDR-200 series offers robust and reliable video
surveillance systems designed to provide high-quality video
surveillance and recording for the demanding truck, bus and
PSV markets. It offers you the choice of 4, 8, 12 or 16
camera inputs on the same vehicle recording images at the
rate of up to 25 frames per second, meeting the demands
of most transport applications. Used in conjunction with
Brigade’s CCTV systems the MDR-200 helps protect
drivers, passengers, pedestrians and vehicles plus helping
to refute false claims and discourage frivolous lawsuits.
An optional GPS sensor adds a record of location
and speed. Video and audio recordings are stored on a
removable hard disk that can be connected to a PC
via USB interface or by wireless download. Alternatively the
recordings can be viewed ‘in-situ’, using the hand-held
X201 reviewer, or by using a GSM modem in conjunction
with remote link software.

How to make up a typical kit
Download via WLAN
A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) system can be used to
download recordings from a vehicle to a PC.
Programming the system
This can be done via:
• either a MDR-200 programmer/reviewer – for on-site
configuration and reviewing of recordings
• or through a ‘virtual’ programmer/reviewer – using a laptop
1. Decide how many and what model Brigade cameras
(dome, mini or flush mount) you want to fit (see page 45).
2. Select the appropriate MDR unit for 4, 8, 12 or 16
camera inputs (see page 44).
3. Select BE-800 series cable lengths required for
each camera (see page 25).
4. Select hard disk size (80GB most popular).
5. Order at least 1 x PCLink200 programming and
reviewing software per site. This includes a ‘virtual
reviewer/programmer’, which can be used on a
laptop, and a USB cable to connect hard drive to
PC/laptop.
6. Options:
a) X201 dedicated hand-held programmer and
reviewer (not necessary if using virtual
reviewer/programmer).

Ultrasonic Reversing Sensors
Reversing and parking in confined spaces can be tricky and
hazardous, demanding considerable awareness and skill from
the driver. Using proven ultrasonic technology BACKSCAN
informs the driver of the distance between the vehicle and
any obstacle at the rear. As soon as reverse gear is engaged
BACKSCAN starts scanning to the rear of the sensors and
a three stage warning is given to the driver.
Those models with the additional visual warning also display
to the driver the distance between the vehicle and the
object behind. Any driver who has multiple-drop collections
or deliveries or who is required to park or reverse in tight
situations will find BACKSCAN invaluable. The product range
minimises damage and gives greater protection to people and
objects behind the vehicle, whether moving or stationary, and
can create favourable effects on insurance premiums. There
are BACKSCAN systems designed for all types of vehicle
from small cars up to large vans or trucks.
DSM (Dynamic Scanning Memory) is included in all
systems. Our unique and patented DSM feature prevents ‘false
alarms’ from tow-hooks, rear-mounted tyres and other ancillary
equipment that intrude into the first 40cm of each sensor’s
detection zone.

BACKSENSE radar detection system
Backsense utilises pulsed radar technology to detect people
and objects at a longer range than is typical with ultrasonic
reversing aids, which makes it ideal for heavy goods vehicles,
construction vehicles and mobile plant machinery. Designed
to work on the front, side or rear of vehicles, a single sensor is
sufficient to cover each zone on all but the largest machines.
Because pulsed radar travels through plastic, ruggedness and
reliability are ensured by sealing the sensor head inside the
sensor housing.

HID Xenon and Halogen Work Lights
Nordic work lights are supremely tough and durable.
Designed and manufactured for use in the most difficult
and demanding conditions, they will not let you down in
situations where working safety depends on good visibility.
Nordic Xenon HID (High Intensity Discharge) lights are four
times brighter than ordinary halogen lights and provide a
‘white’ light that is very similar to daylight, so they are much
easier on the eye, cause less strain and are safer. The Xenon
tubes typically last 10 times longer than a halogen bulb and
use far less power.
Beacons
Brigade offers Strobe warning beacons for forklift trucks and
electric vehicles. Some models feature fully potted electronic
circuitry for longer life as a result of high resistance to shock
and vibration.

Peace of mind from Brigade
The quality of our product range is the cornerstone on which the continuing relationship
with our customers is built. To reflect our confidence in the reliability of our products,
some have a ‘lifetime’ warranty. Many others have a 3 year warranty and the rest have a
2 year warranty, (excludes light bulbs and Xenon tubes). The following quick reference
chart indicates the warranty available on Brigade products.
Lifetime Warranty (covers the alarm for the life of the vehicle)
bbs-tek® reversing alarms (all models except Backchat and Constant Tone),
Self-adjusting Backalarms (SA-400/600/800 ranges),
Fixed volume Backalarms (BA-100/400/600/800 ranges, BA13).
3 Year Warranty
Backeye CCTV range (all monitors and cameras with a BE prefix,
MDR digital recorder).
2 Year Warranty
All other products (excluding bulbs and Xenon tubes).
CCTV Extended Warranty
All VBV CCTV models are provided with a standard 2 year ‘New for old’ warranty.
You can extend this warranty up to 3 years, simply by opting for an additional 1 year
extended warranty.
CCTV Standard On-Site Warranty Upgrade
The on-site warranty upgrade is available only as an upgrade to product warranty of
at least the same period. This means an engineer will visit your site to repair/replace
(at our discretion) the faulty CCTV part. For faults reported on weekdays by 1.00pm an
engineer will visit within three working days. For faults reported on weekdays after
1.00pm an engineer will visit within four working days.
Note: ‘weekdays’ and ‘working days’ are 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday inclusive,
excluding public holidays. Call outs will incur charge if it is found that the Brigade
product is not at fault (e.g. vehicle wiring or switching fault).
Warranty Terms and Conditions
Brigade warrants all goods to be free from defect in material and workmanship in normal use provided that
they have been installed and operated in accordance with the instruction supplied. The commencement date
of all warranties is the date of delivery to the purchaser unless otherwise agreed in writing by Brigade.
The period during which the warranty applies is stated above. Brigade make no other warranty, express or
implied, with respect to the goods, their marketability, quality or fitness for any particular use or purpose.
In particular, but without prejudice to the general provisions of the conditions of sale, no responsibility is
assumed for incidental or consequential damage by reason of any warranty express or implied. Full details
of Brigade’s Terms and Conditions are contained in the Price List.
