CREATOR COOKS UP
BELMONT UPSET
Creator (left) proves narrowly best in Belmont 148 | Adam Coglianese
by Alan Carasso
Just hours prior to Wednesday=s draw for the 148th
GI Belmont S., celebrity chef Bobby Flay acquired a minority
interest in WinStar Farm=s GI Arkansas Derby hero Creator,
hoping to enjoy some Athrilling moments@ with the son of
leading sire Tapit out of two-time Peruvian champion Morena
(Per) (Privately Held). Suffice to say that it was mission
accomplished for Flay and his WinStar partners Saturday
afternoon, as Irad Ortiz, Jr. shoved the gray colt across the line
to best a hard-luck Destin (Giant=s Causeway) by a nose to
complete a memorable afternoon for Tapit, who also supplied
the third-placed Lani as well as the ultra-impressive
GI Metropolitan H. winner Frosted.
AThe truth was that I had planned to bring about 15 to 20
people to the Belmont Stakes, which I do every year, and I had a
horse named America (A.P. Indy), a filly, who was going to run in
the [GI] Ogden Phipps [S.], but I retired her just last month. So I
really had nothing to run,@ Flay said in the post-race news
conference. ASo I wanted to make sure my guests had a very
enjoyable experience. I wanted to purchase a horse to run, not
necessarily in the Belmont S.--and there were a couple of other
horses that we were looking at. Having a chance to be involved
with a horse like that, with a farm like that, and the people that
are involved in it, just it was a no brainer for me.@ Cont. p3
FROSTED >MILES= THE BEST IN THE MET
There have been some tremendous performances by some
legendary horses in the vaunted 125-year history of the
GI Metropolitan H. Names like Kelso, Carry Back, Forego,
Conquistador Cielo have won the
race--the latter en route to a
victory in the GI Belmont S. More
recently, the Met had been
annexed by the likes of Horse of
the Year Ghostzapper, Palace
Malice--victorious in the Belmont
12 months prior--and champion
Frosted | Adam Coglianese
Honor Code. But no horse had
done what Godolphin=s Frosted (Tapit) accomplished Saturday,
as he took command of the Met two furlongs from home and
sprinted away to take it by a whopping 14 1/4-length margin in
stakes-record time. Cont. p7

FEATURE PRESENTATION • GI BELMONT S.
A >Brilliant= Mating...
Bred and sold by Greg Goodman=s Mt Brilliant Broodmares
LLC, Creator was purchased by Maverick Racing for $440,000 at
the 2014 Keeneland September sale and was turned over to
trainer Steve Asmussen, who tried the colt on the turf in his first
two career starts, good for a debut second at Churchill Sept. 19
followed by a fifth at Keeneland Oct. 21. Switched to the dirt,
Creator was runner-up in a sloppy Churchill maiden Nov. 28 on
the >Stars of Tomorrow II= program, then filled the same spot at
the Fair Grounds Dec. 31 and Feb. 12 before bursting through
with a 7 1/4-length graduation at Oaklawn 15 days later.
The field of 13 is sent on their way in Saturday=s Belmont S.
Adam Coglianese
SUNDAY • JUNE 12, 2016
Allowed to take his chance in the GII Rebel S. Mar. 19, Creator
trailed by as many as 15 lengths and was still 10th nearing the
final quarter mile, but rallied past seven of those rivals to
complete a Tapit 1-3, three lengths behind Cupid. With his form
on an upswing entering the Apr. 16 GI Arkansas Derby, he found
himself a distant last, but this time his stretch rally carried him
to a 1 1/4-length defeat of fellow back marker
Suddenbreakingnews (Mineshaft). Never in contention last time
in the GI Kentucky Derby, Creator was beaten better than
18 lengths in 13th at odds of 16-1 and offered those who still
believed a similar quote Saturday.
>Creating= His Own Luck...
Gettysburg (Pioneerof the Nile), recently transferred from
Todd Pletcher to Steve Asmussen and a horse many believed
was in the race with the express intent of setting things up for
his new stablemate, soon found his way to the front beneath
Paco Lopez, but Destin and Javier Castellano were intent on
keeping in close contact with that one, while the latter=s
stablemate Stradivari (Medaglia d=Oro) was forwardly placed to
his outside. The well-backed Suddenbreakingnews raced as the
meat of the sandwich between >TDN Rising Star= Cherry Wine
(Paddy O=Prado) and favored Exaggerator (Curlin), while further
towards the back of the field, Irad Ortiz, Jr. had managed to get
the outposted Creator down into the two path prior to the
entrance to the first of Belmont=s two sweeping turns.
Gettysburg remained the boss as the field turned up the
backstretch, and the first decisive move of the race came from
Kent Desormeaux, who guided the GI Preakness S. winner into
the four path and out of harm=s way as Creator inched his way
up into about midfield to the inside of Suddenbreakingnews
with just under a mile to travel. Glued to the fence throughout,
Creator continued to creep forward as Gettysburg and Destin
continued to eyeball one another, with Stradivari still in close
attendance and GII Peter Pan S. runner-up Governor Malibu
(Malibu Moon) an increasing threat while also saving ground.

Gettysburg carried the Belmont field into the stretch, but
Destin had that move covered and struck to the front a furlong
and a half from the line. Governor Malibu went for a run inside
of the weakening pacesetter, but had that door slammed on
him, while Creator was sticking on and was coming with a run to
underneath a one-paced Stradivari and the stage was set. Destin
stuck his neck out and began to reach for the wire, but Creator
refused to go away and dropped his gray head down on the line
first. Lani, guided out into the clear down the backstretch, raced
some seven deep on the turn and looked for a few strides like
he could get the job done, but was forced to settle for third
while covering a whopping 80 feet (over nine lengths) more
than the winner, according to Trakus data.
Turning for home | Adam Coglianese
"I thought Irad gave him a perfect trip,@ said Asmussen, who
trained Horse of the Year Curlin (Smart Strike) to a narrow
defeat at the hands of the Pletcher-conditioned Rags to Riches
in this race nine years ago. AI thought he saved yards and won by
inches. He made the difference. "He saved a lot of ground going
into the first turn. Gettysburg did his job. A great call by
[WinStar CEO] Elliott [Walden] there. Forty-eight and four for a
half allowed Creator to show who he is. I thought quite a bit of
traffic around the quarter pole; Irad was beautifully patient. He
went through a lot of traffic very smooth. Very proud of Creator;
he stayed focused through the traffic and did all he could to get
up and win a great race."
It was the second Belmont victory for WinStar in the last six
years (Drosselmeyer {Distorted Humor}, 2010) and the third
winner with which Walden has been associated. He trained
Prestonwood Farm=s Victory Gallop (Cryptoclearance) to a Triple
Crown-ending defeat of Real Quiet (Quiet American) at Big
Sandy in 1998.
Creator is the second produce for his dam, a 10-time winner
and three-time champion in her native Peru. She was acquired
privately by Mt Brilliant
and made eight trips to
the post in this country
under the care of trainer
Michael Matz, finishing
runner-up in the
GIII Obeah S. in 2009 and
2010 and third in the
GI Personal Ensign S. in
2009. Morena, whose
broodmare sire Summing
eked out a neck victory in
the 1981 Belmont, is the

Morena is booked backed to Uncle Mo.

Team Exaggerator Take the Loss in Stride...
Exaggerator, who will enter stud at WinStar upon completion
of his racing career, remained in contention into the stretch
despite his four-wide trip, but once hopelessly beaten, Kent
Desormeaux wrapped up on him.
"I just know there was nothing left,@ said the jockey, a twotime Belmont winner who has also had his fair share of
heartbreak in the race. AThe horse was empty. He came off the
bridle at the four and a half
[furlong mark]. I didn't move. I
sat quiet and let him steady
there, I let him cruise. When I
picked him up at the quarter
pole to go ahead and try to win
the race, there was nothing
there. He did not quicken and
Exaggerator races outside the
eventual winner in upper stretch he has a turn of foot, and my
brother and I call it, we say
Adam Coglianese
when I turn this guy loose he
pops a wheelie he gets up so fast. And there was nothing there."
Added trainer Keith Desormeaux, AThe Triple Crown might
have caught up to him. We will have to see. When he pulled up,
he didn't look winded. I don't know. We'll have to figure it out.
Maybe he was just struggling with the surface. I was hoping to
dispel the sloppy track thing but that has to come into play as
well. I think it's mostly Belmont is a deep, sandy surface and he
might have had a little trouble with it."

WITH CREATOR, WINSTAR MADE ALL THE
RIGHT MOVES by Bill Finley
Yes, Creator (Tapit) deserves a lot of credit for winning
Saturday=s GI Belmont S. He=s the one who ran around the
racetrack and outgamed Destin (Giant=s Causeway) to win by a
hair. But he doesn=t get all
the credit. His owners,
WinStar Farm and Bobby
Flay, pushed every right
button leading into this
race and had they not,
sorry, Creator wouldn=t
have won. The horse won
by a mere nose, a few
Creator | Horsephotos
inches that separated
winning and losing, and the humans behind him made that nose
happen.
Exaggerator (Curlin) seemed to be considerably better than
everyone else in the field, but if he floundered, this looked like a
race that anyone could win. Contenders two through 12 were
that evenly matched. What they needed was an edge.
And WinStar found not one , but two.
SUNDAY • JUNE 12, 2016
Ricardo Santana, Jr. had ridden Creator in his last four starts,
including a win in the GI Arkansas Derby and a 13th-place finish
in the GI Kentucky Derby. Santana is a good jockey, but just a
good jockey. He=s also someone who doesn=t know his way
around the trickiest racetrack in the country, Belmont Park.
Santana had just eight prior mounts at Belmont and had never
won a race there. On this expansive track with its sweeping
turns and long stretch, out-of-town jockeys need a road map to
find their way around.
Loyalty may be one thing, but why compromise your chances
in a Triple Crown race? WinStar told Santana he=d have to sit
this one out and chose the brilliant young New York rider Irad
Ortiz, Jr. He=s won 374 races at Belmont, as well as two riding
titles at the Elmont, New York oval.
AI thought Irad gave him a perfect trip,@ trainer Steve
Asmussen said. AI thought he saved yards and won by inches. He
made the difference.@
Their next move was to take Gettysburg (Pioneerof the Nile)
away from Todd Pletcher, turn him over to Steve Asmussen and
enter him as a rabbit. That was no slight on Pletcher, but he had
speed horses of his own in the race and it wouldn=t have sat well
with his owners had he run a horse that likely would have
compromised their chances. Cont. p7
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 7 OF 16 • THETDN.COM
Gettysburg did his job, keeping Pletcher=s Destin off the lead.
Had Gettysburg not been in the race, Destin would have been
loose on the lead, a much more dangerous trip than the one he
ended up sitting.
In a race that was this close, would Creator have won if ridden
by Ricardo Santana, Jr. and would he have won if he didn=t get
an assist from Gettysburg? I don=t think so.
This race has been good to WinStar. The operation has won it
now twice after Drosselmeyer (Distorted Humor) landed the
2010 edition. In Creator, WinStar now has a son of Tapit who is a
Classic winner and a two-time Grade I winner. The grey colt
looks like a very promising stallion.
As for the rest of the field, the guess is that Exaggerator finally
ran out of gas. He was a bit wide on both turns, but that=s not
why he finished 11th. American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile)
made us forget just how hard the Triple Crown grind is. It got to
Exaggerator.
That wasn=t the case with Lani (Tapit), who was third. Ninth in
the Kentucky Derby, fifth in the GI Preakness, third in the
Belmont...his connections must be wishing this were the
Quadruple Crown.
Though there were three different winners of the 2016 Triple
Crown races, one stands above the rest. Nyquist (Uncle Mo)
won the most important race of the three, the Kentucky Derby,
and might well have won the Preakness had he had a better
ride. A minor problem kept him out of the Belmont, but he will
be back. The only thing that changed for him in the Triple Crown
is that he no longer looks invincible.
It will be fun to see the three Classic winners meet again,
hopefully, in the same races. This is no time to duck anyone, it=s
a time to give the fans a treat in the GI Betfair.com Haskell
Invitational S., the GI Travers S., the GI Breeders= Cup Classic,
which is shaping up as one of the best races ever run.
I=m staying on the Nyquist bandwagon, but I respect Creator.
He=s a good horse getting better and there may be no smarter
team in the sport than WinStar and Steve Asmussen. This
Belmont victory belonged to them.

The 2015 GI Wood Memorial winner, Frosted was fourth to
American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) in the GI Kentucky Derby
and in the GI Belmont S. on this program, then returned from a
brief freshening to finish runner-up to Texas Red (Afleet Alex) in
the GII Jim Dandy S. in August. Third behind upset-minded Keen
Ice (Curlin) in the GI Travers S. after unusually prompting the
pace, the homebred was at his best when taking the GII
Pennsylvania Derby by two lengths Sept. 19, but he beat just
one home in American Pharoah=s GI Breeders= Cup Classic and
called it a season.
Sent to Dubai over this past winter, Frosted dismantled the
field by five lengths in Round II of the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge
Feb. 4, skipped the final round on Super Saturday Mar. 5 and
could do no better than a one-paced fifth behind California
Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) in the G1 Dubai World Cup when last seen
Mar. 26.
Anchor Down sped across from his high draw to set the early
pace in the Met, but Noble Bird (Birdstone) mustered at the rail
to join the fray as the opening quarter-mile was up in a relatively
sedate :22.78. Frosted was kept inside by Joel Rosario and they
settled in fifth or sixth spot on the backstretch. Asked for a bit of
run on the turn, Frosted began to improve his position as he slid
up underneath GII Charles Town Classic winner Stanford (Malibu
Moon) and by the time
the field had reached
the quarter-pole, the
gray was hard held
behind the leading trio
just awaiting further
direction. Angled into
the four path leaving
the five-sixteenths
marker, Frosted
Adam Coglianese
quickly claimed the
scalp of Anchor Down to his outside and once Rosario took his
foot off the brakes, the colt responded, immediately opening up
a massive advantage in one of the true jaw-dropping
performances of the season. The final time of 1:32.73 eclipsed
the previous stakes record of 1:32.80 set by Honour and Glory
(Relaunch) in 1996 and was within 0.49 of the track record set
by Najran (Runaway Groom). With the win, Frosted earns a spot
in the field for the
GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile, though trainer Kiaran McLaughlin
may have other ideas in mind.
"We'll worry about that later,@ he commented. AIt might be the
Classic instead of the Mile. We'll wait and see. He is very
talented and it was a great win for the entire team."
SUNDAY • JUNE 12, 2016
He added, "It was unbelievable. It was a wild, wild race. He has
been doing great all the time and you say that every time that
they are doing great, but for him to beat that great of horses like
that is pretty incredible.@
The winner=s dam was acquired by Darley with its purchase of
the vast majority of the Thoroughbred holdings of Robert and
Janice McNair=s Stonerside Stable in October 2008. Fast Cookie,
a half-sister to 2008 Eclipse Award-winning juvenile Midshipman
(Unbridled=s Song), was a talented and versatile racemare in her
own right, with a victory in the GII Cotillion H. and multiple
stakes placings on the turf, including a third in the
GIII Eatontown H. Frosted is kin to the 3-year-old filly Indulgent

Making his first attempt for the Chad Brown barn, the globetrotting Flintshire turned in an electrifying performance on the

Following a second
straight runner-up effort in the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe,
Flintshire had to settle for second while attempting to defend
his title in the Hong Kong Vase, his final attempt for Andre
Fabre.
The Juddmonte homebred kept a close eye on the leaders
from fifth in the Manhattan as World Approval showed the way
through a half in :49.77 and six furlongs in 1:13.90. Extracted
from a somewhat tight spot between horses on the turn, he
moved to the front willingly and unleashed a jaw-dropping turn
of foot in the stretch to capture Juddmonte=s third Manhattan
trophy. Ironicus rallied along the inside to finish a good second.
According to Trakus data, Flintshire clocked his final quarter in a
blistering :21.50 over the very firm going.
"First of all, many thanks to Prince Khalid bin Abdullah, for
trusting me and my staff with such a remarkable racehorse. He
is special,@ said Brown after saddling his fourth Manhattan
winner in the last five years. AWe're just trying to get him into
our program, make sure he adapts okay and he doesn't change
for the worse, which he hasn't. He has an indescribable amount
of class. He's so intelligent. He picks things up at light speed,
oozes class and is a privilege to work with every day."
Flintsire fired a best of five-furlong move in 1:00 3/5 (1/18)
over the Belmont lawn June 4. He joined Brown=s operation back
in March.
"This race wasn't our first pick,@ Brown revealed. AHe just
dragged us to this race with his training in the morning. So sharp
work after work. I can't leave him in the barn for a million bucks
when he's just a couple of hundred yards from here."
As for what=s next Brown added, "There are no immediate
plans. Obviously, the goal is to take down that race [GI Breeders=
Cup Turf] at Santa Anita at the end of the year. How we get
there--there is more than one way to do that."

Cavorting struggled in a pair of starts over a one-turn mile
during the early portion of her career, but with maturity has
come a new-found ability to switch off and rattle home. With
the underrated Florent Geroux taking over at the controls for
the first time, the >TDN Rising Star= quickened up nicely at the
quarter pole and ran out an easy winner of the Ogden Phipps, a
AWin and You=re In@ qualifier for this year=s GI Breeders= Cup
Distaff.
Accorded her Rising Star status with a double-digit maiden
success over this track, she led home a Bernardini one-two in
the GII Adirondack S., but was well-beaten trying eight furlongs
in the GI Frizette S. to close out 2014 and in the GII Davona Dale
S. to kick off her 3-year-old season. Cut back to sprint trips
thereafter, the $360,000 Keeneland November weanling rattled
off three straight, including the GI Test S. and GII Prioress S., but
was only fourth as the lukewarm favorite in the GI Breeders=
Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Cont. p10
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 10 OF 16 • THETDN.COM
Third in the GI La Brea S. to wrap up a successful sophomore
campaign, Cavorting was runner-up to the flying
Paulassilverlining (Ghostzapper) when giving that one four
pounds in the Apr. 17 GIII Distaff H., but successfully stretched
back out to the mile last time, easily defeating Carrumba by five
lengths in the GII Ruffian S. May 14.
Cavorting was away without incident and dropped herself back
to second-last, with only the slow-starting Forever Unbridled
behind her, as 58-1 no-hoper
Desert Valley (Desert Party) led
from reigning Distaff champ
Stopchargingmaria (Tale of the
Cat), romping GI La Troienne S.
victrix Curalina (Curlin) and
MGISW Sheer Drama (Burning
Roma) stacked up to her
outside. While Forever
Cavorting | Adam Coglianese
Unbridled began to chart a
danger-filled course up the fence leaving the half-mile pole,
Geroux had Cavorting nicely covered up behind Sheer Drama,
and right about the time Joel Rosario hit traffic at the head of
the lane aboard Forever Unbridled, Cavorting was switched out
and around rivals. Showing a surprisingly quick turn of foot, the
Stonestreet runner opened daylight and the result was not in
doubt from there. Forever Unbridled, shuffled to last, did very
well to be second ahead of Phipps Racing=s Carrumba.
"Her pedigree indicated that she wanted to go further,@
explained Kiaran McLaughlin, saddling the Phipps winner for the
second straight year (Wedding Toast {Tapit}, 2015). ABeing by
Bernardini, her third start we tried the Frizette, but it was a
funny racetrack that day a little wet. One turn is great and we're
real happy to win the Phipps two years in a row."
That Cavorting has managed to achieve success over increasing
distances is not entirely surprising. Her sire was a two-time
Grade I winner over a mile and a quarter, while her dam was
scopey enough to take the GII Molly Pitcher Breeders= Cup H.
Promenade Girl was also third in this event in 2007. Originally a
$1.125 million purchase at Keeneland November later that year,
Promenade Girl was sold to C. McCormack for $335,000 in foal
to War Front at the 2012 Keeneland November sale. That foal, a
filly bred by Camas Park Stud, was a $290,000 graduate of the
2014 Keeneland September sale, while Cavorting=s close 2-yearold relation Thirstforlife (Stay Thirsty, by Bernardini) was tabbed
a >TDN Rising Star= following an impressive graduation June 4
and was third in the Kentucky Juvenile S. in two career starts.
Promenade Girl foaled a colt by The Factor in 2015 and was
most recently bred to Uncle Mo.

Maybe being excluded from the GI Kentucky Oaks wasn=t such
a bad thing after all.
>TDN Rising Star= Carina Mia, an authoritative heroine of the
GII Eight Belles S. on the first Friday in May in Louisville, made it
two straight wins in style here after tiring to fourth while making
her sophomore debut in a salty renewal of the GI Central Bank
Ashland S. at Keeneland Apr. 9.
Sent off as the second choice in this spot as Kentucky Oaks
heroine Cathryn Sophia took the bulk of the play, Carina Mia
was well-restrained by Julien Leparoux at the rear of the pack in
sixth behind an opening quarter in :23.05 and a half-mile in
:46.17. Edging closer while still under a firm hold on the turn,
the Three Chimneys Farm colorbearer spun widest of all at the
top of the lane and easily dispatched the Oaks winner in
midstretch to register a career high under a celebratory
Leparoux. Off the Tracks rallied late to snatch second from
Cathryn Sophia. Cont. p11

AWe thought there was speed in there,@ Hall of Fame trainer
Bill Mott explained. AIt actually turned out to be a little bit more
than what we thought. Certainly Cathryn Sophia, it looked like
they wanted to send her into the race a little bit.@
A jaw-dropping second-out maiden winner going
6 1/2 furlongs at Keeneland Oct. 29, the dark bay capped off her
juvenile season with a wire-to-wire tally in a sloppy renewal of
the GII Golden Rod S. beneath the Twin Spires Nov. 28. Carina
Mia spent much of her winter under quarantine at Payson Park,
and was left a bit behind the eight ball upon her aforementioned
return in Lexington.
"Her first race came off a five-month layoff and things hadn't
gone just right,@ Mott added. AShe probably needed the race to
get back in gear, I suppose. It is nice to get her a Grade I win."
Leparoux added, "I thought I was going to be behind Cathryn
Sophia and Go Maggie Go. But I saw them go away from there
so I decided to just sit off of them. I felt confident at the top of
the stretch. I came around everyone and she kicked on at the
end. She's a nice filly. We didn't get to the Oaks, but maybe it
was for the best because she won a big race today."
Carina Mia, a half-sister to GI Santa Margarita Invitational S.
heroine Miss Match (Arg) (Indygo Shiner), was produced by the
unraced Southern Halo mare Miss Simpatia (Arg). Her dam, bred
to Malibu Moon the past two seasons, has a 2-year-old

It was tough to have the $825 exacta in the Jaipur, but
longtime Florida-based owner/breeders Pat and Frank
Generazio had a reason to play it. Their recognizable green and
pink silks were carried by both front-running Pure Sensation and
fast-finishing Disco Partner.
The former made up for a late start to his 2015 season with a
smashing success in a Saratoga optional claimer last July, and
bested subsequent GI Breeders= Cup Turf Sprint upsetter
Mongolian Saturday (Any Given Saturday) by a nose in the GIII
Turf Monster H. at Parx Sept. 7. Well-backed in the Breeders=
Cup at 58-10, he showed speed before running into some traffic
trouble and checked in eighth.
SUNDAY • JUNE 12, 2016
The grey was bumped at the start and checked in fifth in the
Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint Feb. 6.
Pure Sensation was hustled a bit from his wide draw to make
the lead surprisingly easily while the Jimmy Ryerson-trained
Disco Partner was taken a hard hold of to sit second last. Still
confidently ridden at the head of the lane, Pure Sensation stiffarmed the runners close to him and found the line just in time
to hold off the gray blur charging at him late.
"Mr. Clement did a great job with this horse. He had him 110%
ready to go today,@ said winning rider Jose Ortiz. AWhen the
gates opened he broke
good and he wanted to
go to the front. When
we got the lead and he
was going good, I
looked around and
nobody was coming
after us. I had a lot of
horse, so I let him run
and he ran great. I
want to thank Mr.
Pure Sensation | Adam Coglianese
Clement and the
owner for giving me
the opportunity to ride such a nice horse."
Both runners trace their lineage to the Generazio=s stallion
Concorde Bound, who stood for only a few years before dying in
1989, but whose influence is shown in the predominance of grey
Generazio runners. The Clement-trained GISW Discreet Marq
(Discreet Cat), who the Generazios sold to Moyglare Stud Farm
for $2.4 million at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November Sale; as well
as her recent stakes-winning full-brother Too Discreet, are also
both grey descendants of Concorde Bound.
AWhen this horse is right, he's a top-class horse and he proved
it today,@ Clement said. AHe's not an easy horse to keep right all
the time because he's not the soundest horse. When he's
training well, he runs well."
The Frenchman continued, 'I'm just thrilled because he
belongs to Patricia Generazio. Mr. and Mrs. Generazio have
been a long-time supporter of the stable. They are great owners
and breeders and I think it was a great result for them."

Originally scheduled to breeze Sunday, undefeated champion

day earlier to breeze seven furlongs in 1:25.80 under the
watchful eye of trainer
Jerry Hollendorfer. The

her record to a perfect

miss the GI Kentucky
Oaks after spiking a

fever. Following
Saturday=s work, Hollendorfer confirmed the dark bay for the
GII Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita June 18.
AShe went the last eighth in spectacular fashion, :12 seconds
flat,@ Hollendorfer said. AShe=s ready. I changed my mind [on the
work day]. I decided at the last minute.@
Working in the company of stablemates The Gomper (Sky
Mesa) and Little Curlin (Curlin), Songbird went in fractions of
:25.40, :37.40, :49 and 1:13 with a one-mile gallop-out time of
1:39.
AJerry called me first thing this morning after planning a very
early work for Songbird,@ owner Rick Porter said on his Facebook
page. AEveryone was expecting her to work tomorrow so Jerry
wanted to go this morning when he sent two of his nice horses
out right in front of Songbird.
He added, AIt was about five lengths when they all broke. She
went behind them at her own pace and then, as planned,
started running at the quarter pole and split them as nice as
could please and went the last eighth in a gallop out in :12 flat.
The clocker told Jerry he got her in 1:24 flat even though they
published 1:25 4/5ths. It is nice to confirm she can rate. Great
work and looking forward to the race next Saturday.@

Sharp Kitty has demonstrated steady improvement, and
earned the first stakes victory of her career Saturday afternoon.
Seventh on debut going 7 1/2 furlongs here Jan. 31, the bay ran
third and fourth in a pair of local maiden heats Feb. 21 and
Mar. 27, respectively. She graduated going 7 1/2 furlongs here
May 15 and was tabbed as the favorite for this initial try against
winners. Riding the rail around the opening bend, the
sophomore made an early move into contention through a
quarter-mile in :22.92 and raced in third through a half in :47.50.
Sharp Kitty punched through along the rail to seize control on
the final turn and held on firmly in the stretch to notch the
victory. The winner’s dam produced a filly by Kitten’s Joy in 2015
and a filly by Giant’s Causeway earlier this year. Click for the

CLASSIC CONNECTION
CONTINUES FOR LAEL STABLE
Roy and Gretchen Jackson at Keeneland in 2007 | Horsephotos
by Emma Berry
On one day in May back in 2006, Roy and Gretchen Jackson
achieved the extraordinary feat of breeding the winners of two
Classics on two different continents, with George Washington
(Ire) (Danehill) landing Newmarket's G1 2000 Guineas, followed
some eight hours later by the GI Kentucky Derby victory of
Barbaro (Dynaformer) in their own Lael Stable silks.
"I had a call from John Magnier the next day and he said that
he didn't think we'd ever see anything like that again. We
watched George Washington win from our hotel room at about
10 a.m. then off we went to see Barbaro. It was quite a day,"
recalls Roy Jackson in his measured manner which doubtless
helped him cope with the despair which was to follow Barbaro's
Derby triumph.
As history relates, the colt suffered multiple fractures to a
hindleg a fortnight later in the GI Preakness S., an injury that
would lead to his death eight months later through
complications arising from several operations to repair the leg.
"Grief is the price we all pay for love," said Gretchen Jackson
on the day her horse was euthanised, but despite enduring, and
ultimately losing, one of the most drawn out fights for survival
with Barbaro, today she speaks of the luck she has enjoyed with
her husband through almost five decades of ownership and
breeding.

DARLEY TO STAND PROFITABLE
Darley has secured the breeding rights to Profitable (Ire)
(Invincible Spirit {Ire}--Dani Ridge {Ire}, by Indian Ridge {GB}),
who is among the favourites for Tuesday=s G1 King=s Stand S. at
Royal Ascot. The 4-year-old, who has won the G3 Palace House

in the colours of owner Alan Spence and be trained by Clive Cox.
Jockey Alan Kirby will
continue to ride the horse.
"I'm delighted that

Spence. "Profitable will

season."
Sam Bullard, Darley's Director of Stallions, added, "Profitable
will be an exciting addition to our stallion ranks at the end of his
racing career. He has an attractive pedigree and physically he is
impressive and has presence."

Prior to Saturday=s Stradbroke, Under The Louvre had
contested Group 1 company four times in his 28 starts, hitting
the board on each occasion. The first attempt came in last year=s
G1 Oakleigh Plate, when he was second by three-quarters of a
length to stablemate Shamal Wind (Aus) (Dubawi {Ire}). The bay
gave Group 1 company another go two starts later in the
Goodwood, finishing third, that time behind Flamberge (Aus)
(Exceed and Excel {Aus}). Under The Louvre went winless during
a busy spring campaign last year, his four placings in six outings
including a third in the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S. at Caulfield, and
he enjoyed an extended rest over the Australian summer,
resuming only when third in Caulfield=s Listed Bel Esprit S. going
1100 metres Apr. 23. His second in the Goodwood came a
month after that, and trainer Robert Smerdon admitted his loss
in the Goodwood, hence avoiding a penalty, likely made the

Sacred Elixir kicked off a day to remember for trainer Tony
Pike, giving the Cambridge-based conditioner his first Group 1
win in Australia, a tally that was later doubled when Provocative
landed the G1 Queensland Oaks on the same card. Sacred Elixir
also became the first Group 1 winner for the 2011 G1 Investec
Derby winner Pour Moi, who is based at Coolmore in Ireland and
shuttles to New Zealand=s Windsor Park Stud.
Sacred Elixir broke his maiden at second asking going 1200
metres at Ellerslie Jan. 9, and filled sixth over the same track and
trip two weeks later in the Listed Karaka Million. Given a near
four-month break
thereafter, the gelding
traveled across the
Tasman to take a
1400-metre Sunshine
Coast handicap May 11,
and was a fast-finishing
sixth, ultimately beaten
just over a length, in the
Sacred Elixir | Racing and Sports
G2 Sires= Produce S. at
Doomben two weeks later. Fancied at odds of 4-1 to relish the
step up in trip here, Sacred Elixir sat midpack and off the fence
in the full field through the opening stages. Appearing full of run
as he swung five-wide off the turn under Zac Purton, Sacred
Elixir ground his way to the lead passing the 200-metre mark. He
needed only a couple of reminders with the stick before drawing
away to ultimately win under wraps. "I had it won at the 700
metres,@ Purton told the media after the race. "When I was
tracking up coming into it beautifully and everyone else was all
crammed up, I just kept him out of trouble.@
"He=s very raw,@ Purton added. AThere could be a lot of
improvement left in him or there could just be a little bit more.
But we know he is going to improve to a certain degree. He=s a
lovely big horse but he hasn=t quite filled out into his frame yet
and mentally he=s still got to think about everything he=s doing.
Once that all comes together and he gets over a bit more
ground, and being by an English Derby winner he=s an exciting
horse.@
Pike noted Flemington=s G1 Victoria Derby in November is his
charge=s ultimate spring target. "We=ve always thought he was
an extremely promising horse,@ the conditioner said. "Being a
2-year-old and wanting to get him over a trip we hadn=t been
able to get him past 1400 metres, so the JJ Atkins was the
perfect race for him on a big track over the mile. The Victoria
Derby is the long term plan with him. He=s got a real stayer=s
pedigree out of Horlicks=s family. He=s a lovely big horse now
and he=s only going to furnish more as he gets older. He=s going
to be a lovely horse when he gets to 2000 metres and further.@

John Moore is plenty accustomed to having his name in the
spotlight as a champion trainer in Hong Kong, but he gained a
new perspective at Eagle Farm on Saturday as the owner of
Eagle Way, the first horse to win a Group 1 in his colours. Moore
and his son, George, picked up Eagle Way for A$200,000 at the
Inglis Easter yearling sale of 2014, but were left to campaign the
SUNDAY • 12 JUNE, 2016
horse themselves after the intended owner=s Hong Kong racing
permit fell through. Moore entrusted the horse to trainer Bryan
Guy, and said after Saturday=s win, AOnce he started training
him, Bryan told me last year that I shouldn=t sell this horse back
to Hong Kong because it would win the Queensland Derby, and
he was right.@
Eagle Way made just two unassuming starts as a juvenile and
took six starts in total to break his maiden, at last achieving the
feat going a mile on the Sunshine Coast last December. He then
notched two more successive wins in handicap company before
checking in second in a Gold Coast benchmark 75 race Apr. 16.
Eighth in Doomben=s G3 Gunsynd Classic two weeks later, Eagle
Way was fourth in the G3 Rough Habit Plate a further two weeks
after that and was second in this race=s major lead-up, the 2200metre G3 Grand Prix S., May. 28. Traveling in the second half of
the field while his Grand Prix conqueror Mackintosh (NZ) (Pins
{Aus}) led the way on Saturday, Eagle Way began to pick off
rivals under Tommy as the field rounded the final turn. Fivewide at the top of the lane, Eagle Way took dead aim on
Etymology (Aus) (New Approach {Ire}), who was left with the
lead after Mackintosh had thrown in the towel prematurely.
Tangling with Rodrico for a good 200 metres, Eagle Way at last
turned back that rival inside the final 100 metres to win
comfortably.
AI have had four runners in Group 1=s [as an owner], but never
have I been as nervous as that before a race or during it,@ Moore
revealed. AIt was a perfect ride from Tommy--it was a George
Moore ride,@ he added, referring to his late father, the
celebrated jockey and trainer. Moore noted that Eagle Way had
gone one better than his current stable star Werther (NZ)
(Tavistock {NZ}), the beaten favourite in this race last year who
has gone on to win this year=s Hong Kong Derby and
G1 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup. Eagle Way will now follow in that
one=s footsteps and be offered for sale to Hong Kong clients.
Eagle Way is the 10th, and now the most accomplished,
produce of the winning Wedgetail Eagle, who has produced
three other stakes winners in Soaressa (Aus) (Twining),
Impressive Eagle (Aus) (Rubiton {Aus}) and Assertive Eagle (Aus)
(Danewin {Aus}). Soaressa is in turn the dam of Group 3 winner
Thermal Current (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}). His second dam,
La Favorita (Seattle Dancer), is a full-sister to the G1 Racing Post
Trophy winner Seattle Rhyme. Wedgetail Eagle has a
twice-raced 2-year-old filly named Sweet Eagle (Aus)
(Hinchinbrook {Aus}), and a yearling full-brother to her named
Wedgebrook (Aus). Eagle Way is from the first crop of foals bred
by the Maloney family following its purchase of the famed
Segenhoe Stud.

The milestones continue to roll in for the late great Zabeel, and
Provocative handed the former Cambridge Stud sire another
highlight on Saturday when becoming his 45th Group 1 winner
in the Queensland Oaks. Zabeel is now on even terms with his
own sire and former Cambridge barnmate Sir Tristram (Ire) in
that category.
Provocative also capped a milestone day for Cambridge-based
trainer Tony Pike, who
had earlier on the card
won his first Australian
Group 1 with Sacred Elixir
(NZ) (Pour Moi {Ire}) in
the JJ Atkins S.
A debut winner at
Pukekura in December,
the dark bay won a 2100Zabeel with Cambridge studmaster
metre benchmark 65 race
Sir Patrick Hogan | Cambridge Stud
second-up at Ellerslie Feb.
4 before finishing sixth in the
G2 Avondale Guineas. Fourth when dropped back to a mile for a
Te Rapa benchmark 75 race May 7, Provocative rebounded to
take an Ipswich handicap upped to 2190 metres 11 days later
and was making her Australian debut on Saturday.
SUNDAY • 12 JUNE, 2016
Rolling along with just two behind her through the first half of
the race, Provocative made a big move on the outside rounding
the turn to swallow up much of the field. On the heels of
Falkenberg at the top of the lane, Provocative swept past that
rival passing the 200-metre mark while Ambience gave chase
bravely but in vain. Provocative needed only moderate urging to
keep up to the task late and score comfortably. Pike revealed
that both Provocative and Sacred Elixir would remain in Australia
to spell for the winter and, like Sacred Elixir, he said Provocative has
some lofty targets for the Melbourne Spring Carnival.
AThey will both spell here and do some pre-training and then
head to Melbourne for the spring,@ Pike told media after the
race. "The Caulfield and Melbourne Cups is a long pipe dream
[for Provocative], but she=s a natural staying filly and that would
be the plan.@
"Two Group 1s in Australia would have to be my biggest day
and even the old horse [Sacred Star] ran a really brave race in
the Stradbroke [when fifth],@ Pike added. AIt=s been a super day
and a lot of thanks to everyone involved.@
Provocative is the third foal out of Betwixt, winner of the
G3 Tasmanian Derby. In another interesting twist to the result,
the placed horses are both sisters to G1 Golden Slipper winners:
Ambience is a half-sister to Pierro (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}), and
Falkenberg is a full-sister to Sebring (Aus).
GRANDE PREMIO BRASIL

Haras Santa Maria de Araras=s standout 3-year-old filly Daffy

entered for Sunday=s G1 Grande Premio Brasil at Gavea, with
the winner receiving an automatic berth into the GI $3 million
Longines Breeders= Cup Turf at Santa Anita Park Nov. 5. The lone
filly and Group 1 winner among 13 rivals after the early scratch
of G1 Latinoamericano winner Some In Tieme (Brz) (Shirocco
{Ger}), Daffy Girl will bid to become only the sixth female to
capture the Grande Premio Brasil and first in 15 years since
Queen Desejada (Brz) (Know Heights) conquered the country's
marquee race in 2001. The daughter of Wild Event, who will
now break from post 11 under Valdinei Gil, will attempt to
provide owner-breeder Julio Bozano with his fifth win in the
prestigious event. Runaway winner of the G1 Grande Premio
Diana in both Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo and winner over the
colts in the G1 Grande Premio Cruzeiro do Sul, the versatile filly
enters the race off a wire-to-wire score in the G2 Grande Premio

Turf Berth on the Line in Brazil Cont.
Her only two defeats in eight starts have come over a soft ground.
Daffy Girl's main opposition may come from Cabecinho (Brz)
(Curlin). The 3-year old colt has won five of eight starts but has
only raced once on turf, finishing second in the G1 Grande
Premio Sao Paulo. The highly regarded son of Curlin could give
trainer Venancio Nahid his fifth success in the Grande Premio
Brasil.
