GALILEO DOMINATES DAY 2 AT TATTS
Coolmore boss John Magnier and his team once
again topped trading Tattersalls= October Yearling Sale
in Newmarket yesterday when paying 900,000gns for a
filly by the stud=s flagship
sire Galileo (Ire) (Sadler=s
Wells). Auctioneer
Alastair Pim described the
Camas Park Stud
offering--a three-parts
sister to Classic-placed
Gagnoa (Ire) (Sadler=s
Wells)--as having Aa step
as good as you=d see anywhere.@ Bidding kicked
Galileo Topper Tattersalls 2010
off at 200,000gns, and
local agent Hugo Lascelles tried hard for the filly, but it was Charlie
Gordon-Watson who provided Magnier with his main
opposition. AShe was just a good individual by a stallion
we like and know well," said Magnier. Gordon-Watson
had more success later when acting on behalf of New
York-based Bjorn Nielsen. The bloodstock agent went
to 550,000gns for a Galileo colt sold from Denford
Stud for whom trainer William Haggas was underbidder.
Gordon-Watson secured the athletic bay with a single
bid. AJust look at the page, you can=t beat it,@ enthused
Gordon-Watson. AHe=s a Galileo with a Darshaan (GB)
(Shirley Heights {GB}) cross, so he=s very exciting. He=s
a full-brother to a nice horse, No Heretic (GB) (Galileo
{Ire}), that ran well first time, and he is from a great
family.@ During Wednesday=s day of selling, fillies accounted for four of the top five prices, and others on
the leaderboard included a 450,000gns Green Desert
(GB) (Danzig) three-parts sister to
last year=s 700,000gns
sale-topper Rudolf Valentino (GB)
(Oasis Dream {GB}). GordonWatson was underbidder this
time, as owner Andrew Tinkler
had the successful bid, via agent
Dwayne Woods. AHopefully,
she=ll have a future for breeding,
she=s a really well-bred nice filly.
Andrew Tinkler
I=m pleased to have her,@ said
thisislondon.co.uk
Tinkler. AHer trainer is undecided,
they all go back and we=ll work it out. I=ve got seven
mares at Brook Stud at the moment, including Sugar
Free (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who is in foal to Sea the
Stars (Cape Cross {Ire}).@ Cont. p2

Tatts Success for Denford Stud...
This is the second year that Prince Faisal Salman has
consigned yearlings under his Denford Stud banner, and
the Saudi royal, who previously bred as Belgrave Bloodstock, was delighted when
Charlie Gordon-Watson
secured a Galileo (Ire) colt
for 550,000 guineas on
behalf of Bjorn Nielsen.
The yearling boasts a distinguished lineage: his second dam Last Second (Ire)
(Alzao) twice carried
Salman=s distinctive green
silks to victory at Group 2
Denford’s Galileo colt Tattersalls
level, while his dam, In2010
trigued (GB), is a stakesplaced full-sister to Group 1 winner Approach (GB)
(Darshaan {GB}) and a half-sister to Aussie Rules
(Danehill), who was successful at the highest level in
the G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains and GI Keeneland
Turf Mile. AHe=s a very nice horse and as nice a Galileo
as you could hope to get,@ Prince
Faisal said. AI=m glad Bjorn Nielsen has bought him, because he
will send him to a good trainer.@
In regard to the fledgling operation, Prince Faisal added, AThe
aim is to improve the stock each
year. We have a nice group of
yearlings, and we sell another
two on Thursday--a Montjeu (Ire)
colt and a Bernardini (A. P. Indy)
colt, so I hope they sell okay
Prince Faisal Salman
too.@
aawsat.com
Looking ahead, the Prince
added, AWe will be back every year with a view to keep
things small and select. The fillies will be kept to race
and the colts will be sold as yearlings.@
Makin Things Happen at Tatts...
Paul Makin has enjoyed Group 1 triumphs as an
owner, notably with Australian champion and
G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. winner Starcraft (NZ) (Soviet
Star), and he is proving successful as a breeder too
after investing significantly in a select band of
high-class mares. The Australian was pleased to see
John Magnier pay 360,000 guineas for a Montjeu close
relative to Mikhail Glinka (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who landed
the G3 Queen=s Vase for the Coolmore supremo and his
partners at Royal Ascot in June.
AThey got a lovely horse,@ said Makin. AUnfortunately,
you can=t keep them all, and he has gone to a good
home. He made a good price, but I just wanted him to
go to good people and he has.@

Makin cont.
Offered by The Castlebridge Consignment on behalf
of Makin=s Paulyn Ltd, the colt has plenty of black-type
on his page. His dam, Lady Karr (GB) (Mark of Esteem
{Ire}), is a full-sister to G1 Epsom Derby winner Sir
Percy (GB) (Mark of Esteem {Ire}) out of the high-class
Percy=s Lass (GB) (Blakeney {GB}).
AI=ve got the dam as well as the sister,@ Makin added.
A[Lady Karr]=s in foal to Galileo (Ire)--carrying a colt, so
we have that to look forward to.@
Makin, who has been adding to his select band of
mares, commented, AI have five mares, all high-end.
Funsie (Fr) (Saumarez {GB}) is the dam of [G1SW]
Authorized (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and I also have Song
(Ire) (Sadler=s Wells). I paid 1.7 million guineas for Song
last year, and she is in foal to Sea the Stars (Ire).@
Deer in the Highlights...
A year after topping the Tattersalls October Yearling
Sale at 700,000 guineas with Rudolf Valentino (GB)
(Oasis Dream {GB}), John Deer=s Wales-based Oakgrove
Stud struck gold
against yesterday
with a Green
Desert filly out of
the same mare.
Maganda (Ire)
(Sadler=s Wells)
was purchased
by Amanda
Skiffington for
320,000 guineas
at Tattersalls in
2007 from the
Green Desert filly Tattersalls 2010
Haras de
Bouqetot dispersal, and her star yesterday was a 450,000 guineas
Green Desert for whom owner Andrew Tinkler outbid
Charlie Gordon-Watson.
AI=m very pleased with that--I=m still in shock,@ admitted Deer. AThe mare is a wonderful animal and, although she wasn=t cheap, she=s proving to be good
value. That=s all thanks to Amanda [Skiffington].@
Deer, who currently has 28 mares at Oakgrove Stud,
indicated that the long-range objective is to upgrade the
mares at the stud and focus on quality.
AMaganda has a Green Desert colt foal and is in foal
to Oasis Dream, so we have those to look forward to,@
he added.
Asked if he got as much pleasure out of breeding as
his successes as an owner, which included top-level
victories with the half-brothers Avonbridge (GB) and
Patavellian (Ire), he said, AIt=s probably not as much as a
thrill--not when I=ve experienced having Group 1 winners. That=s really something. But coming here and
having success is very nice for me, the staff at the stud
and Amanda.@
A Good Buy...
Agent Michael Goodbody was another shopping for
fillies on behalf of an Aussie owner, and he was
pleased to get a Mr. Greeley filly out of Helena Molony
(Ire) (Sadler=s Wells), a sister to G1 Derby winner High
Chaparral (Ire), for 425,000gns.
AShe=s for an Australian client who will race her here
in Newmarket," said Goodbody, after outbidding
Catherine Duncan of the Qatar-based Al Shahania Stud.
AShe=s hopefully going to be a foundation mare, as she
has a wonderful page. I think there is a great shortage
of good fillies in the sale, and as a result, you are having to pay over the odds to get them. She made about
what I thought she would."
Al Shahania Stud had more success with another
Newsells Park Stud offering, a 400,000gns Galileo (Ire)
daughter of dual Grade I winner Janet (GB) (Emperor
Jones). The filly, heading to an undisclosed British
trainer, was bought as a long-term breeding prospect.
CORRECTION: The immediate underbidder on hip 59
during Tuesday=s opening session at Tattersalls was
Grant Prichard-Gordon and not Charlie Gordon-Watson,
as was reported in Wednesday=s TDN.

to 1.1-million guineas to acquire Helena Moloney (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells),
a full sister to MG1SW High Chaparral (Ire) out of the 2006 Tattersalls

first produce, now two-year-old Ownman (Kingmambo), made €600,000
as an Arqana August yearling last summer and this transaction takes
the team a little bit closer to a profit from just two foals. Helena Moloney

then was purchased by the Jacobs family operation for $575,000 at
KEENOV in 2002. Her Giant’s Causeway colt of 2004 realized
220,000gns, while her 2005 produce, a filly by Cape Cross (Ire), made
150,000gns. Demi O’Byrne signed the ticket on the mare’s Montjeu (Ire)

trumped those. Janet gave birth to a colt by Holy Roman Emperor (Ire)
this year and was bred back to Dubawi (Ire).

KEEJAN in 2009. The family has done exceedlingly well commercially
lately, as Miss Isella brought $1.085 million at KEEJAN this past winter,
and La Cucina’s two-year-old of this year, Majestic Man (Maria’s Mon),
was a $525K purchase out of the KEEAPR two-year-old sale. Yesterday’s transaction kept the ball rolling. La Cucina is also the dam of a

Racetrack
Frontieres out of Cup Reckoning...
E. Paul Robsham Stables= Discreetly Mine (Mineshaft),
in many circles the one to beat in the GI Breeders= Cup
Sprint Nov. 6, will be forced to miss the event after
being diagnosed with an injury to his left stifle, Daily
Racing Form reported. AIt's nothing too serious, but
he'll have to be given 60 days off, which naturally
eliminates the Sprint
from consideration,@
trainer Todd Pletcher
told DRF. AIf all goes
well, we hope to
have him back in
training again this
winter at Palm Meadows. This is terribly
disappointing to us
because obviously
this horse found his
niche sprinting during
Discreetly Mine
EquiPhoto
the second half of
the year.@ On the Triple Crown trail over the winter
following a front-running score in the GIII Risen Star S.,
the homebred half-brother to GISW Discreet Cat (Forestry) was runner-up in the GII Woody Stephens S. on
the Belmont S. undercard before winning the GIII Jersey
Shore S., the GII Amsterdam S. and the GI King=s
Bishop S. in succession. He was being trained up to the
Sprint.
Sir Robert Ogden's Sans Frontieres (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
will miss the Nov. 2 G1 Melbourne Cup after suffering a
setback, it was announced yesterday. The Jeremy
Noseda-trained four-yearold, who took the G1 Irish
St Leger at The Curragh
Sept. 11, was reported to
have suffered from a severe attack of azoturia
(Tying up) after a workout
on Tuesday by the
owner's Racing Manager
Barry Simpson. AIt's
hugely disappointing for
Sir Robert and everyone
involved," Noseda told PA
Sport. "We were all looking forward to having a
heraldsun.com.au
runner in such a famous
and prestigious race. It
started at 5 p.m. on Tuesday night, and the attack was
quite severe. We had veterinary people to see him
straight away and the view is that he has reacted to
the Australian food mix that he has gradually been
given. It=s a massive ask to get a horse to Australia in
the first place, so when something like this happens it
makes it all the more difficult. It's a bitter pill to swallow at the moment, but the decision has been made.
Azoturia causes muscle damage and that is stopping
him working and stopping him going to Australia, but
it's not a major problem. It's something that he'll recover from in three to four days, but we can't risk
sending the horse on a plane for 28 hours with this
hanging over him. He was always going to stay in
training next year, so that's not an issue."
GSW Helleborine Done for Season...
Fuisse Faces Champion Test...
Khalid Abdullah's Helleborine (GB) (Observatory)
won=t race again this season, and according to trainer
Criquette Head-Maarek, the homebred will be targeted
at Newmarket's G1 1000 Guineas next year. Runner-up
in Sunday's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp, the
previously unbeaten G3 Prix d'Amaule winner will be
bidding to add a fifth renewal of that Classic to her
conditioner's tally in May. "She looks very well and she
ran a very good race," Head-Maarek told PA Sport.
AShe won't run again this year, but we will enter her in
the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, that is for sure. We
will also put her in the French Guineas and then decide
where we are going to go. The English Guineas is a
race I like, and she is the kind of filly for that race if I
can have her in good form. If we go for the Guineas,
she will have a prep race in the G3 Prix Imprudence at
Maisons-Laffitte in April. All my horses that have won

Alec and Ghislaine Head's G1 Prix du Moulin hero
Fuisse (Fr) (Green Tune) has become the latest to be
green-lighted for a tilt at the G1 Emirates Airline Champion S. next Saturday. Trainer Criquette Head- Maarek
revealed that the homebred four-year-old and
J “TDN Rising Star” J will be at Newmarket for
the 10-furlong test. AFuisse is very well and is going to
England next week to run in the Champion S.," she told
PA Sport. AHe worked over the straight mile at Chantilly
on Tuesday with two lead horses, and he was very
impressive. I would like good ground for him, as he's
got a huge action. I hope the mile and a quarter will be
okay."

SEXTON RESIGNS FROM CHURCHILL POSTS
Steve Sexton, executive vice president of Churchill
Downs Inc. and president of Churchill Downs Entertainment, disclosed yesterday that he would be leaving
Churchill Downs. It was also announced that the CDE
initiative, begun in 2009 in an effort to bring live entertainment to CDI venues, would be discontinued, effective immediately. AI am proud of the CDE team and
what we accomplished, and I have enjoyed my tenure
at both Arlington Park and at Churchill Downs Racetrack during my nine years with CDI,@ Sexton said. AI
was fortunate to lead superb teams at each venue,
overseeing six record-setting Kentucky Derbys, two
Breeders= Cups, and the $121-million renovation of
Churchill Downs Racetrack. I am looking forward to
expanding my career in a new direction.@ Explaining the
decision to dissolve CDE, CDI President and Chief Executive Officer Robert L. Evans remarked, AIt has become
clear that launching new, upscale entertainment events
in the current economy, particularly with the persistently high levels of unemployment, is extremely difficult. While we received exceptionally high marks from
the nearly 80,000 people who attended our CDE
events, we fell short of the attendance levels necessary
to operate these events profitably.@

a win at Aqueduct Apr. 16. The dark bay put together
two more victories for his new connections May 16 and
June 16 at Big Sandy, then ran second by 3/4 of a
length in a tough heat at Saratoga July 26. He rebounded with a four-length triumph over Driven by
Success (Precise End) in the John Morissey S. at the

fourth in the early stages. He came off the fence to
take command in the lane, and rider Edgar Prado waved
the stick at his mount a few times late to keep him
interested for a popular success. Click for the

Four-Day Weeks at Santa Anita this Winter:
Following what track officials called a Astudy of the
horse population@ in Southern California, Santa Anita
Park in Arcadia is tentatively scheduled to conduct fourday race weeks during the months of January and
February, according to Daily Racing Form. The publication reports that the number of horses based in the
region sits at about 2,800, a loss of about 1,000 over
recent years. The track will apply for 76 live racing
dates at the next meeting of the California Horse Racing Board Nov. 9. In March and April, the track will
resume a more typical Wednesday-to-Sunday schedule.
Santa Anita will host five days of racing during the
weeks of Jan. 17 and Feb. 21, both of which include
Monday national holidays. Track president George
Haines believes that the shorter weeks Ashould make
the quality better on the weekends.@

Shareef Dancer), fourth in last year's G1 Criterium de

AHe's a nice, big horse and it didn't quite happen for

“I’ve got the best water in the world here.
There’s no pollution. Our paddocks are bigger
than most people’s stud farms. I came here
because this is the best place in the world to
raise horses.”
–Gary Player
“You can never give a horse ability. A horse
either has it, or they don’t have it. But there’s
one thing you can change, which is the
strength of bone, the strength of their
tnedons. A good athlete can’t be locked up in a
room and at the age of 21 come out and start
running. Our horses have been running from
a young age and stretching their ligaments.
We try to go back to the natural ways.”
–Graeme Koster, who once tracked a pack of
54 yearlings and found that it had traveled
more than 20 miles in the course of a day on
his Rosedene Stud.
