other Nature had her way the afternoon and
evening of Aug. 13 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
First the New York Racing Association called off
the final six races of the Saturday card—including
the $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap (gr. IT) and the
$200,000 Adirondack Stakes (gr. II)—after a series of
severe summer thunderstorms, complete with heavy
rain and lightning, moved through the upstate track.
The cancellation after the fifth race meant the
Fourstardave was rescheduled to Aug. 20, while the
Adirondack will now be run Aug. 19.
Later that evening, with another violent storm
deluging the area, the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred
yearling sale was postponed. It is rescheduled to
3 p.m. EDT Aug. 14 for one continuous session.
The Saturday sale session was delayed about 30
minutes because of heavy rains and a sound issue,
and one horse went through the ring before there
was a deluge and heavy winds uprooted a tree on
the sales grounds.

Fasig-Tipton officials immediately announced that,
due to the turn of events. those in attendance should
not attempt to leave until the storm front had moved
through.
Fasig-Tipton president and CEO Boyd Browning Jr.
said the auction company had no choice but to take
the unprecedented action.
"It’s the first time in 28 years we’ve had to do something like this," Browning said. "Ultimately the safety
of our customers and horses are of utmost importance. Unfortunately the weather conditions deteriorated very quickly and created an environment where
we weren’t comfortable proceeding with the sale.”
Each day’s session was scheduled to start at 6:30
p.m., following the final race at Saratoga. The early
start Sunday will create an overlap between sale and
races. The first horse through the ring, a Mission
Impazible filly hammered at $49,000, will be offered
again Sunday to kick off the sale.
“We wish we weren’t going up against live racing, but
we are,” Browning said. “It’s unusual circumstances."
Browning said the one tree being uplifted was the
only damage he was aware of.
“Fortunately, no horses or people were injured,”
he said.

run.
"We stepped him up to a mile-and-a-quarter at
York and he ran a really good race, and once we saw
that he handled the trip OK, we had this race in the
back of our mind," O'Meara said. "We thought we'd
bring him over because he performed so well this
side of the water last year."
Mondialiste earned a return trip to the Breeders'
Cup; the Arlington Million is a Breeders' Cup Challenge
"Win and You're In" event for the Longines Breeders'
Cup Turf (gr. IT). His connections plan to go.
"He seems to love it over here and he thrives over
here," Tudhope said. "It's amazing for (David O'Meara
and I, to get a "Win and You're In" to the Breeders'
Cup Turf), even everyone back home in the yard, we
all work hard and they deserve this just as much as
we do. Hats off to everyone in the yard. It's an amazing feeling."
Bred in Ireland by Wertheimer & Frere, Mondialiste is out of two-time group I winner and European

group III winner Only Answer, and stakes winner

the 2015 Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT), Geoff and Sandra
Turnbull's son of Galileo would not be denied Aug. 13,
emerging from a multi-horse stretch battle to score his
biggest victory to date in the Arlington Million XXXIV
(gr. IT) at Arlington International Race Course.
After a slow opening quarter in :25.56, Take the
Stand took a clear lead into the stretch, but the race
was just getting started. Nearing the quarter pole,
Mondialiste launched a five-wide move from 3 1/2
lengths back—and he continued to rally.
Favored World Approval, who tracked in second
throughout, mounted his own challenge in the stretch.
They were also joined by Arlington Handicap (gr. IIIT)
winner Kasaqui, who had to wait a bit near the quarter
pole before firing between rivals in the stretch to finish
second; and Deauville, who raced wide and briefly led
near midstretch before fading to third.
Mondialiste, under first-time Arlington rider Daniel
Tudhope, emerged from the crowd to edge Kasaqui by
a neck, completing 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.87 on firm turf.
Trained by David O'Meara, Mondialiste won last

SEA CALISI WINS SCHWARTZ'S
FOURTH BEVERLY D.
By Evan Hammonds

ith a late rush, favored Sea Calisi won the Beverly D. Stakes (gr. IT) at Arlington International
Racecourse by a half-length, adding another big win
for trainer Chad Brown and jockey Florent Geroux.
It marks the fourth win in the Beverly D. for owner
Martin Schwartz.
Sea Calisi ran down Zipessa in the stretch and covered the 1 3/16 miles in 1:54.93 on firm turf. Ken and
Sarah Ramsey’s Al's Gal rallied for second. Zipessa
was 1 1/4 lengths back in third.
The victory in a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and
You're In" event gives Sea Calisi a spot in the gate for
the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) at Santa
Anita Park Nov. 4.
Elusive Million broke on top in the 14-horse field
with Zipessa in close pursuit, followed by Euro invaders Ballydoyle and Coolmore in forward positions. The
opening quarter went in :23.71. Down the backstretch,
Elusive Million was overtaken by Zipessa, who then
opened up a clear lead on the field through six furlongs
in 1:12.58. Zipessa led in the stretch, with Sea Calisi
and Geroux in high gear. They overtook Zipessa at the
eighth pole, then held off the late rally of Al's Gal.
The winner, the fourth on the afternoon and third
straight graded stakes win for Geroux, paid $4.20,
$3.40, and $2.60. Al's Gal paid $10.40 and $6.40.
Zipessa returned $7.20 and was followed by Tuttipaesi and Faufiler.
“They work well as a team,” Brown said of Geroux
and Sea Calisi. “We’re lucky to have Marty and lucky
to have her."
A 4-year-old by Youmzain out of the German mare
Triclaria (by Surumu), Sea Calisi was making her third
start in the U.S. since being purchased by Schwartz
and turned over to Brown. She won the grade II
Sheepshead Bay Stakes (gr. IIT) at Belmont May 7 and
was second to stablemate Dacita in the New York
Stakes (gr. IIT) June 10. At 3 she was a group II winner
in France and a third-place finisher in the Darly Yorkshire Oaks (Eng-I) and Qatar Prix Vermeille (Fr-I).
Schwartz's other Beverly D. wins came with Stacelita (2011), Gorella (2006), and Angara (2005). Brown
won last year's running with Watsdachances and
with Stacelita. Brown also won Saturday's Secretariat
Stakes (gr. I) with Beach Patrol, teaming with Geroux.
“It’s a great race and great people,” Schwartz said
of the experience.

race track with
a good surface.

BEACH PATROL DETERMINED IN
SECRETARIAT WIN
By Frank Angst

FOUR FOOTED FOTOS
ne start after earning his first grade I-placing,
Beach Patrol obtained his first top-level win,
holding off a game Long Island Sound through the
stretch to secure a head victory in the $450,000 Secretariat Stakes (gr. IT) Aug. 13 on the turf at Arlington
International Racecourse.
Owned by James Covello, Sheep Pond Partners,
and Head of Plains Partners, Beach Patrol tracked
from third as longshot Scissors and Tape led through
a half-mile in :48.31 while Long Island Sound shadowed him in second. Long Island Sound, trained
by Aidan O'Brien—who had won the previous two
editions of the Secretariat and was looking for his
fifth overall win in the race—briefly took the lead in
the turn.
But Beach Patrol quickly engaged Long Island
Sound and took a short lead just past the quarter
pole; then those two carried that battle to the wire.
Beach Patrol held the advantage all the way home,
completing 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.95 on firm turf.
Jockey Florent Geroux, who secured his third win
of the day and second straight graded stakes win in
the Secretariat after guiding Da Big Hoss to victory
in the American St. Leger Stakes (gr. IIIT), was willing
to spot some ground in the turn while tracking three
wide.
"I was able to stalk and when I asked him to go he
was very brave. (Long Island Sound) didn't give it up,
and (Beach Patrol) showed a lot of heart," Geroux
said.
Winning trainer Chad Brown liked the confidence
displayed by Geroux. A race later that pair teamed
up again to take the Beverly D. Stakes (gr. IT) with Sea
Calisi, as Geroux registered a third straight graded
stakes win.
"Florent rode a beautiful race from a difficult
post," Brown said of the Secretariat victory. "The
horse has been training really well. I want to thank
Sol Kumin and James Covello, the other partners that
put up the money to buy him, for their patience. His
first start didn't go so well (but) they didn't worry
about it, they were in it for the long-term and it paid
off today."
The 5-2 favorite, Beach Patrol paid $7.60, $3.80,
and $3 across the board while Long Island Sound
returned $4.40 and $3 to place and show. WinStar
Farm's American Patriot, a grade III winner last out,
made up ground in tight quarters along the rail in the
final turn to finish third ($3 to show), earning his first
grade I placing.
Beach Patrol ran third in the Belmont Invitational Derby (gr. IT) July 9
at Belmont Park, a race where Long
Island Sound, a Kentucky-bred son
of War Front, finished sixth. Beach
Patrol is a son of Lemon Drop Kid,
who also is the sire of Da Big Hoss.
Bred in Kentucky by Nancy Shuford, Beach Patrol is out of Quiet
American mare Bashful Bertie, a full
sister to two-time grade II winner
Allamerican Bertie. Ben Glass went
to $250,000 to land the Secretariat
winner as a weanling from the Elm
Tree Farm consignment to the 2013

stock sale for his initial owners, Gary

EXAGGERATOR SKIPS BREEZE, TO WORK AUG. 20
By Blood-Horse Staff
C
CHAD B. HARMON
oncerned about rain forecast for the Saratoga
Springs, N.Y., area over the weekend, trainer Keith
Desormeaux decided to pass on a planned Aug. 13
workout for Travers (gr. I) hopeful Exaggerator.
"We're going to take the fresh approach," said Desormeaux, who arrived from Del Mar the evening of
Aug. 11. "He's had plenty of racing, he's been running
steadily since February. He had a tough Triple Crown
campaign and he showed his ability to maintain fitness by the run in the Haskell (gr. I)."
Weather permitting, Exaggerator will two-minute
lick Aug. 16 and go through his final breeze Aug. 20,
which will be his only work between his 1 1/2-length
Haskell victory July 31 and the Aug. 27 Travers.
With Desormeaux returning to California later this
weekend, the 3-year-old Curlin colt remains under
the care of assistant trainer Julie Clark, the principal
overseer of the conditioner's New York string.
"It's going to be all on Ms. Clark to determine how
he works," Desormeaux said. "The important thing is
that he gallops out well next weekend."
Exaggerator was originally pointed to the July 30 Jim
Dandy (gr. II), but turned in a lackluster breeze over
the main track July 22, which Desormeaux cited as one
of several reasons he chose the Haskell instead.
"I didn't like the work here but he ran great in the
Haskell," Desormeaux said. "We know here that the
track is so busy in the morning, it becomes loose. It
might be as simple as that, that's the kind of stuff
you shouldn't complicate. That's probably what it is,
it becomes loose from use in the mornings, but they
run fast times in the afternoon. It's nice and tight (for
the races) and that means that the track is fine.
"I had actually accepted that and was
planning on running in the Jim Dandy but, as
I looked at it more, there was no speed in the
Jim Dandy. Exaggerator is not about the track.
His success is not dependent on a sloppy
track, but his success is dependent on a pace
to run at."
Laoban, who shed his maiden status with
his upset in the Jim Dandy, had his first work
Aug. 12 since going gate-to-wire for that graded score. The Uncle Mo colt, owned by Southern Equine Stable and McCormick Racing, was
ridden in the breeze by Jim Dandy pilot Jose
Ortiz. He covered five furlongs in 1:01.45 on
the main track.
"I put him behind another horse, and he
ended up picking up a couple of other horses
who got in his way down the lane, and he had
to go around them," trainer Eric Guillot said.
"He got by everything, and worked in 1:01 2/5
and galloped out another (furlong) in :12 and
went 1:13 2/5. He came back good."
Next Saturday, weather permitting, Guillot
said he will again work Laoban five furlongs.
Also working Aug. 12 with an eye on the
Travers were third-place Jim Dandy finisher
Destin (four furlongs in :48.87) and Ohio Derby
winner Mo Tom (four furlongs in :51.71). BH
Exaggerator will have only one breeze between his Haskell win and Travers start

An even-money favorite in a six-horse field, Klimt

$3.20 and $2.60. Thirstforlife got up for third and was

California sire Unusual Heat—Winning in Style, by

Acclamation, who was bred and raced by Old

grade I level in the TVG Pacific Classic, Eddie Read

STEADY FOAL CROP NUMBERS PROJECTED
By Blood-Horse Staff
T
JOY B. GILBERT
he Jockey Club is projecting a 2017 North American registered Thoroughbred foal crop of 22,500
The projection for the 2016 foal crop was also
22,500.
The 22,500 foals estimated for 2017 and for 2016
is a 2.3% increase from the 22,000 projected for both
the 2015 and 2014 foal crops.
"As always, this projection is based on reports of
mares bred received to
date, and we estimate
that approximately 80%
of those reports have
been received," said The
Jockey Club's executive
director, Matt Iuliano.
The foal crop projection, traditionally announced in mid-August,
is computed by using
Reports of Mares Bred
(RMB) received to date
for the 2016 breeding
season. RMB are to be
filed by Aug.1 of each
breeding season.
Additional foal crop
information is available in The Jockey Club's
online fact book and in the online state fact books.
The fact book also includes information on the U.S.
distribution of active stallions and mares bred, distribution of the registered U.S. foal crop by state, and
Thoroughbred import/export trends.
Stallion owners who have not returned their
RMBs for the 2016 breeding season are encouraged
to do so as soon as possible. Interactive Registration,
which enables registered users to perform virtually
all registration-related activities over the Internet, is
the most efficient means of submitting RMBs. BH
The 2017 foal crop is expected to be similar to the 2016 foal crop

SARATOGA SPECIAL S. (GR. II)
Saratoga, Sunday, August 14, Race 9
6.5f (dirt), $200,000, 2yo, 5:40 PM (local)
Recruiting Ready takes a second shot at an initial stakes win here. The Algorithms colt notched a 10 1/4-length victory in his maiden special
weight debut May 28 at Pimlico, the first North American-based winner for his freshman sire. He then earned a grade III placing in his next start,
the July Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs. Awaiting Recruiting Ready will be Calumet Farm's Sonic Mule, who delivered a disciplined debut
score in a maiden special weight July 15 at Monmouth Park. Also entered off a placing in the Bashford Manor is Whispering Oaks Farm's Tip Tap
Tapizar, who tracked from second in that race before finishing third.—F.A.

LONGACRES MILE H. (GR. III)
Emerald Downs, Sunday, August 14, Race 8
8f (dirt), $200,000, 3yo/up, 5:51 PM (local)
Stryker Phd seeks to become the first horse to win the Longacres Mile (gr. III) in three consecutive years, but will have to turn the tables on
a recent local rival and fend off a challenge from several California invaders to do so. He may have been the star horse of the Northwest in past
seasons, but Oregon-bred O B Harbor is the horse of the moment. The 4-year-old gelding has been untouchable in 2016 and defeated Stryker
Phd on back-to-back occasions in the Budweiser and Mt. Rainier stakes.—J.B.
