Gala Launch Souvenir Edition
The Gallipoli Research Foundation was
launched in spectacular style on 6 May 2005
at the Stamford Plaza in the presence of Her
Excellency the Governor of Queensland,
Ms Quentin Bryce AC, Mr Bryce, and a
glittering group of distinguished guests and
Foundation supporters.
Inside this issue:
Fabulous musical entertainment was
provided by the Royal Australian Navy Band
(Queensland Detachment) who performed
a special Sunset Ceremony to commence
proceedings. The Sunset Ceremony is a
very old observance signifying the closing
of the day and preparation for the coming
day. Gala guests and hotel patrons were
enthralled as band members stepped
through the intricate ceremony in the
Hotel’s main foyer. It was both moving and
memorable as guests watched the lowering
of the Australian flag. The ceremony
concluded with the National Anthem.
Program Manager of 4BC and Gallipoli
Research Foundation Board member, Greg
Cary acted as Master of Ceremonies for
the evening. In his opening comments
about the ceremony he said: “The Beat to
Quarters honours the courage and sacrifice
of the men and women of the Royal
Australian Navy through eight decades of
war and peace in the service of our country.
The ceremony provided a very fitting start
to our celebrations here tonight, as the
Foundation aims to honour the sacrifice
of the veteran community by striving to
achieve its vision to become a centre of
excellence in medical research.
Tonight we will hear about the need for
medical research, we will acknowledge
the magnificent contributions of the
Foundation’s major supporters, we will
have some fun with our auction and we will
end the evening with music and dancing.
It’s going to be a great night!”
And so it was.

What a night!
continued from page 1.
Professor Peter Brooks, Executive Dean, University of
Queensland delivered an address on the importance of
research. The University of Queensland School of Medical
and Faculty of Health Sciences is a key supporter of the
Foundation along with Greenslopes Private Hospital and
Ramsay Health Care.
Her Excellency made presentations to major supporters
of the Foundation. In a very special gesture, platinum
supporters who had pledged or given up to $250,000
received an eye-catching sculpture crafted by artist Dr
Maryann Nicholls. Each statue, depicting Simpson and
his donkey weighs more than 30kg and is cast in bronze
and sits on a sandstone base – a stunning piece of artwork
and a fitting addition to each recipient’s board room or
reception area. Special guests, Mrs Pat Coomber and Mr
Ted Balmeaves who are descendents of John Kirkpatrick
Simpson assisted in the official unveiling of the sculptures
before the presentations were made. The Foundation’s
Gold supporters were also acknowledged on the night.

In her comments before officially launching the
Foundation, Her Excellency remarked:
“While scientific researchers work to decipher
the causes of disease, and its cellular and molecular
mechanisms, clinical researchers study the effects of
new drugs on patients. For years, both have struggled to
translate the findings in the laboratory into more effective
cancer treatments. The translational research practised
at Greenslopes Private Hospital brings scientists and
physicians together in teams to solve these problems
systematically and inclusively… Your work is exhilarating,
vital and valued highly by veterans and the wider
Queensland community. I wish you every success in your
pursuit of excellence.” (A full transcript of the Governor’s
remarks appears opposite.)

MP and Mr Alan Kinkade, Chairman of the Gallipoli Research Foundation and Chief Executive Officer,
Greenslopes Private Hospital.
Media celebrity, Pat Welsh, also a Foundation Board
Member, kept the pace moving as auctioneer, raising more
than $6000.
Dr Pia Iacovella, Foundation board member and
Greenslopes Private Hospital visiting medical officer was
delighted with her purchase of “Desert Dawn”, a dazzling
painting by renowned artist Pam Walpole. The painting
will add a stunning visual dimension to Pia’s consulting
rooms in the newly opened Specialist Centre. Stuart Giles
of APHS was still excited about securing his Lions painting
when he attended the Greenslopes Private Hospital Race
Day (the next day). Thanks to everyone for participating so
enthusiastically in the auction.

The Foundation acknowledges the event sponsors who
helped to make the occasion such a success.
The Gala Launch culminated a very solid four months
of fundraising activity during which time more than
$1.7Million was raised. The Foundation’s ambitious
fundraising target is to achieve $12Million over three
years, with half of this amount proposed to be provided by
Federal and Queensland Governments.
Fundraising efforts will now continue so that the target
will be reached in 2008.

Exhilarating, vital and valued research
- a milestone for remembrance
Speech by Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, AC
Governor of Queensland at the Gallipoli Research
Foundation Gala Launch held at the Stamford Plaza on
Friday, 6 May 2005.
“Ladies and gentlemen
Thank you for your warm welcome. I am delighted to join
with you this evening in launching the Gallipoli Research
Foundation, and celebrating your progress towards its
establishment as an internationally renowned centre of
excellence in health and medical research.
On May 19, 1915 a young Private John Turnbull wrote in
his diary: ’Simmie the Donkey man was killed. He had a
wounded man on his donkey and was about to enter the
sap leading over the ridge to the Dressing Station when a
sniper on Dead Man’s Ridge got him. We were watching
him from our camp across the gully. He spun round and
dropped…An Indian who was at a well nearby rushed out
and picked him up and carried him to shelter in the sap. But
poor Simmie was gone.’
This year, 2005, is a milestone for remembrance:
· 90 years since Australian and New Zealand troops
stormed Turkish soil on the Gallipoli Peninsula;
· 90 years since ‘Simmie’ — Private John Simpson — who,
after discovering a donkey wandering on the shores of
Anzac Cove, for three weeks until his death, carried on the
donkey’s back dozens of wounded and slaughtered away
from the front line; and
· 60 years since German and Japanese surrenders
brought an end to World War Two’s six years of bloodshed,
struggle, and back-breaking toil.
We remember the courage, endurance, mateship, good
humour, and sense of self-worth that sustained our soldiers,
sailors, pilots, and nurses. We remember the ‘Simmies’ of
those conflicts.
properly directed efforts were made. In time, the right
direction was indeed found and the efforts were rewarded,
yet the tantalising and the mystery not only did not lessen;
they actually grew. The more they became known, the more
miraculous seemed the intricacies of the whole, and the
more urgent the drive to expand our knowledge of organs
and tissues.’
And now, when so much knowledge has been amassed,
so many mysteries unravelled, you have resolved and
committed to take health and medical research to a new
level of probing, innovation, and sophistication that will
distinguish itself internationally.
While scientific researchers work to decipher the causes
of disease, and its cellular and molecular mechanisms,
clinical researchers study the effects of new drugs on
patients. For years, both have struggled to translate the
findings in the laboratory into more effective cancer
treatments.
The translational research practised at Greenslopes
Private Hospital brings scientists and physicians together
in teams to solve these problems systematically and
inclusively.
It is the consequence of a remarkable collaborative spirit
between experts of varied disciplines in your participating
organisations - in fields of research such as cancer,
cardiovascular and respiratory disease, endocrinology, and
mental health.
Discoveries travel from the laboratory to the clinic, the
clinic to the laboratory - impacting on an entire process
in health care from early detection, to diagnosis, to
prevention, to treatment.
Your work is exhilarating, vital and valued highly by
veterans and the wider Queensland community. I wish you
every success in your pursuit of excellence.
It is now my great pleasure to officially launch the
Gallipoli Research Foundation.”
We celebrate too the efforts of Greenslopes Private
Hospital in recognising and honouring these qualities
in our veterans, since treating casualties of war in 1942,
and today - with the support of Ramsay Health Care and
The University of Queensland - maintaining that tradition
through the work of the Gallipoli Research Foundation.
Ladies and gentlemen,
‘Centuries ago, when little was known of science, the
mystery of the body’s internal machinery enthralled
ordinary people and tantalised the educated.
It seemed a miracle, this bustling edifice of thought
and action - beyond the capacity of mere mortals to
comprehend, and yet providing here and there a hint that
the inscrutable might somehow be understood if only

Accelerate! GRF Introducing...
Limited Edition
Art Union No. 1
Prizes in the Foundation’s
inaugural Art Union were
drawn on 6 May 2005 at the
Foundation’s Gala launch.
First prize winner Ms Sharon
Fuller won a 1 Series 118i BMW
motor vehicle valued at over
$42,000. Sharon attended the
Gala to represent her employer,
Olympus, which just a few
days before had pledged to
become Gold supporters of the
Foundation. She purchased her
ticket on the night so you can
imagine her excitement when
she was announced as first prize winner.
This is the first in a series of introductions to present
Gallipoli Research Foundation major supporters. With
their help the Foundation is set to fulfil its vision to
become a centre of excellence in medical research and
a key contributor to Queensland’s outstanding medical
achievements over the coming years.
APHS, a wholly Australian owned company specialising in
pharmacy services, has pledged Platinum Support for the
Gallipoli Research Foundation. This means that APHS will
give $50,000 each year for five years to reach a total giving
of $250,000.
APHS’s Hospital and Oncology Division is one of
the leading providers of pharmacy services to public
and private hospitals throughout the eastern seaboard
of Australia and has enjoyed a long and successful
involvement with the veteran community through their
viable, interactive partnership with Greenslopes Private
Hospital and many other DVA contracted facilities within
their continually expanding portfolio.
Second prize went to Mr Ian Throssel. A regular day
patient at Greenslopes Private Hospital, Ian received
information about the art union in a mail out from the
Foundation. He won a return trip for two, Brisbane
– London. Ian and his wife are delighted and excited with
their win, and looking forward to their overseas trip.
The third prize, a replica BMW donated by Brisbane BMW
was won by Mrs Annette Leong. Annette’s ticket was a
Mothers’ Day gift, purchased
by her husband who saw the
art union advertised in the
Brisbane News.
APHS is also the largest provider of Pharmacy services to
the aged care market in South East Queensland, providing
medication consulting and dispensing services to a total
of more than 8000 beds The APHS Pharmacy network is
rounded out by the retail pharmacies that are found onsite at many of the larger campuses they serve and their
Lifetime Health Community Pharmacy Brand.
The APHS Pharmacy service to Greenslopes Private
Hospital is a shining example of the company’s vision to
be Active Partners in Health Solutions and is illustrated
time and again by the inspired and engaged team running
the discharge support systems which extend across the
continuum of care, assisting not only patients but acting
as an important information conduit between treating
and referring practitioners, hospital staff and the hospital
pharmacy teams. Careful management of patients’
pharmacy needs helps reduce the risk of medication
misadventure and the possibility of readmission to hospital.
Thank you to everyone who
helped to make the Gallipoli
Research Foundation Limited
Edition Art Union a success.
The Gallipoli Research Foundation acknowledges the
outstanding support of APHS. Thank you.

Special delivery
1
The Statues of Simpson and his donkey that were presented
to Platinum Supporters at the Foundation’s Gala Launch are
now being delivered to their final destinations.
These deliveries are providing wonderful opportunities
to thank, once again, the outstanding platinum supporters
who have helped to kick start fundraising activities in such
spectacular fashion.
Alan Kinkade and Robynne Milne visited the War
Widows’ Guild Office in the CBD and presented the statue
to members of the state council. The first issue of Tribute
magazine was also distributed and caused lots of interest
because Guild members are featured on the front page. The
Guild’s superb donation of $100,000 helps the Foundation
take a big step forward to reach its fundraising target.
Alan Kinkade also delivered a statue to the offices of
APHS at Eight Mile Plains. Not only is APHS a wonderful
early supporter of the Gallipoli Research Foundation,
but their Chairman, Mr Tom Ryan, has also accepted a
role as Foundation Board member. Tom and his staff are
enthusiastic about the work of the Foundation and their
support is sincerely appreciated. By pledging to give
$250,000 over five years, APHS is helping to provide a stable
fundraising income stream that is invaluable, especially at
the commencement of fundraising activities.

The Diggers’ Dozen, those exceptional people who
give so freely of their time and energy to volunteer at
Greenslopes Private Hospital also received their statue
at their June meeting. Alan Kinkade, Robynne Milne
and the Hospital’s Director of Marketing and Business
Development, Carmel Monaghan attended the meeting
and were pleased to be able to express their thanks again
for the solid commitment of volunteers. The Diggers’

Make your wishes known
Everyone knows that it’s important to write a Will, especially these days, when
it is more complex than in the past. Without a Will, you can’t be sure that your
wishes will be observed after you have passed away. While it’s often difficult to
come to terms with the fact that one day we won’t be around any longer, it makes
very good sense to prepare for that time.
Free Wills Service
Including the Gallipoli Research
Foundation in your Will provides an
opportunity for you to make a lasting
positive impact on your community;
it’s a way to give back to others,
particularly future generations
including your children and your
grandchildren.

Your bequest may help
researchers find that illusive cure
to a currently incurable illness, or
it may assist to find a better way of
managing a particular disease.
The Foundation has established
a Free Wills Service in the hope that
people who use the service will include the
Foundation in their Will disbursements. Of course, we stress that we
want you to make provision for your loved ones first, and then consider helping
the Foundation.
When you write your Will, you can choose to specify an amount as a bequest
to the Foundation, or you may like to designate the residual amount (what is left
of your estate after you have provided for your loved ones). Whichever way you
choose, you can be sure that your gift will be valued and used wisely to fund vital
medical research at Greenslopes Private Hospital.
An alternative to leaving a bequest directly to the Foundation is to bequeath an
amount to be placed with the Queensland Community Foundation, specifying
the Gallipoli Research Foundation as beneficiary. Established by the Public
Trustee and chaired by Mike Ahern, the Queensland Community Foundation
(QCF) is a public charitable trust set up to serve the State’s communities by
providing a permanent funding source for charity.
QCF is a collection of endowed funds which is growing all the time. The
Gallipoli Research Foundation has established a “named fund” under the QCF
Trust Deed. Funds derived from bequests through the QCF to benefit the
Foundation are invested in perpetuity. The income which is derived from the
capital is paid out annually by the Public Trustee for the charitable purpose of the
Foundation.

Cutting edge technology
QUT joins the
Foundation
Gastroenterologist, Dr Luke Hourigan has introduced a
very useful and innovative treatment for pre cancerous
mucosal lesions of the lower oesophagus and stomach at
Greenslopes Private Hospital, a first in Australia.
It is well known that the Queensland University
of Technology (QUT) enjoys a significant research
profile in areas such as pharmacology, basic research
sciences and biomechanics.
This procedure known as Endoscopic Submucosal
Dissection (ESD) uses a special new device called an “IT
knife” or “insulated tip electrosurgical knife” which has
only recently become available in Australia.
The Gallipoli Research Foundation is very pleased
to announce that QUT has signed a Memorandum
of Understanding with the Foundation to work
collaboratively to further medical research at
Greenslopes Private Hospital. While both parties
will continue to work with third parties, the MOU
substantially strengthens the links between the
Foundation and QUT.
With the new insulated tip electro surgical knife the
premalignant area can be removed endoscopically.
This provides a less invasive endoscopic option for the
management of precancerous lesions that are confined to
the lining of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
Dr Hourigan said he used the procedure to resect a
premalignant gastric mucosal lesion.
This new collaboration highlights a positive spirit of
cooperation that will not only be mutually beneficial
to both parties, but will also provide excellent
opportunities for research outcomes that will enhance
the lives of people now and in the future.
“Resection of these lesions in one piece allows for better
histopathologic assessment and subsequent assessment of
curability,” he said.
“The ceramic insulated tip on the electrosurgical knife
allows the mucosal lesion to be neatly cut out and dissected
from the muscular wall of the oesophagus and stomach.
“Previously such lesions would have required surgical
resection. This device provides an endoscopic option for
suitable lesions without the need for a major operation, all
done by accessing the upper gastrointestinal tract through
the mouth,” he said.
Dr Hourigan was invited to Japan in November last year
to learn how to use this new device from Dr Takuji Gotoda
at the “National Cancer Center” in Tokyo. Dr Gotoda is
considered one of the World experts in the use of the
IT knife.
The introduction of this procedure keeps GPH at the
forefront of gastroenterology innovation in Queensland.

$30,000 donation for racing
This year’s first race meet of the Winter Carnival was
one of the biggest held at Eagle Farm since Greenslopes
Private Hospital first sponsored the Queensland
Guineas Race Day eight years ago. More than 10,000
enthusiasts enjoyed the warm winter sunshine and
the atmosphere and excitement of the track.
The day was also a special occasion for the Foundation;
riding on the success of the gala launch held the evening
before, another $30,000 was donated thanks to the Race
Day’s corporate sponsors and the Greenslopes Private
Hospital. Vice Chairman of the Board, Dr John Preston
accepted a cheque on behalf of the Foundation. Pictured
below are Dr John Preston, Mr Cyril Gilbert OAM,
Foundation Board Member and Deputy State President,
RSL Queensland, The Hon Gordon Nuttal MP, Minister
for Health, and Mr Alan Kinkade. Nurse of the Year
Entrant, Kristina Gee and the RSL’s Girl in a Million entrant,
Shelley- Anne Gaunt also received cheques at the special
presentation trackside.

“Uncle Jack”
Share in
our future!
The Gallipoli Research Foundation welcomes donations
from individuals, the community and the corporate sector.
Contributions will be gratefully received and can be
directed through the Foundation to a specific project or
area of research. Every gift is valued, regardless of its size,
because it shows us that you care and you want to help us
achieve our vision.
Mrs Pat Coomber, who attended the Gala Launch with
her brother Mr Ted Balmeaves as the Foundation’s special
guests, has since written to express that they were “very
proud to attend the function as representatives of the
Simpson – Kirkpatrick family.” She added: “We will
certainly remember that night for the warm reception we
received and the great honour you have bestowed on our
Uncle Jack.”
Bequests
John Kirkpatrick Simpson features on the Foundation’s
logo, along with his donkey. Together they represent a wellknown and much loved Australian icon that epitomises the
sacrifice made by our brave service personnel at Gallipoli
and in many conflicts since that tragic but heroic chapter in
our history. The commitment, dedication and selflessness
that enabled Simpson to go out, time and again, to rescue
his wounded comrades
encourages us to strive
towards excellence in medical
research so that others can
benefit in this generation and
the next.
The Foundation has established a network of solicitors
who will provide a Free Wills Service to those who wish to
bequeath an amount from their estate to the Foundation,
or if you wish to use your own solicitor, the Foundation will
provide specific wording to use when making a bequest.
You may also choose to specify that your bequest funds
are managed by the Queensland Community Foundation.

Birthday surprises for Maude included a special morning
tea and birthday cake shared with her colleagues, a
beautiful framed photograph of herself taken at breakfast
following the Anzac Day Dawn Service in April, gorgeous
flowers and a set of exquisite Swarvoski crystal earrings and
necklace. 83 family and friends attended her birthday bash
at the Colmslie hotel, so it’s been a birthday to remember.
Maude volunteers her time at least three days a week at
the Hospital and she is quick to say that it’s an important
part of her life, adding: “The Hospital has given me a
wonderful outlook, and a fullness of life that I treasure.”
Happy birthday, Maude! Thank you for your enthusiasm
and support over the years. We appreciate you.

Telephone (bus hrs):
Congratulations to Mrs Maude Campbell who celebrated
her 80th birthday in May. Maude is a foundation member
of the Diggers’ Dozen, that wonderful band of volunteers
who works tirelessly at the Greenslopes Private Hospital.
Maude has held the position of President of the Diggers’
Dozen for about 13 of the 15 years since the Diggers Dozen
commenced. She still has the slouch hat shaped invitation
she received to attend the inaugural meeting. Maude was
attracted to volunteering at the Hospital after receiving
care as an in-patient. She saw contributing her own time
and energy as a way to “give back” in recognition of the
wonderful care she received.
The Diggers’ Dozen welcomes new members. From those
early days when there were just 12 volunteers, their ranks
have now grown to more than 70 members. Their support
for the Gallipoli Research Foundation is outstanding. As the
Foundation’s first Platinum level Community Service Group,
the Diggers’ Dozen’s name will be listed on the Honour
Board to be erected in the hospital’s foyer.

We remember
More than 2000 people attended the Anzac Day Dawn
Ceremony of Remembrance at Greenslopes Private
Hospital. Despite ill-health, more than 50 patients attended
the service with assistance from the Hospital’s management
and staff, and for those inpatients unable to take part in the
Service, it was filmed and played ‘live’ to patients’ bedsides.
State RSL President, Bill Mason, presented the special
address while a Conservatorium of Music ensemble lead
the assembly in chorus.
Dignitaries included:
• Kevin Rudd MP, Federal Member for Griffith
• Gary Fenlon, MLA, State Member for Greenslopes
1
• Councillor Catherine Bermingham, East Brisbane Ward,
Brisbane City Council, and
• other ex-service organisation representatives.
The Anzac Day Dawn Ceremony of Remembrance is
part of the Hospital’s long and proud tradition of caring
for war veterans. The dawn service was followed by the
traditional gunfire breakfast. For the first time, attendees
were invited to make a gold coin donation to assist the
Gallipoli Research Foundation. More than $1000 was raised
and many people commented that they were very happy to
be able to assist the Foundation and make a contribution
towards what is always an excellent breakfast.

The Gallipoli Research Foundation supports the efforts of researchers to find causes, cures, better
management methods and improved medications and treatments of a range of major conditions which affect
the health of veterans and the Australian community at large.
The Foundation is an initiative of Greenslopes Private Hospital and is supported by the University of Queensland School
of Medical and Faculty of Health Sciences, and Ramsay Health Care. The Gallipoli Research Foundation is supported by a
Board of Directors and Research Committee made up of highly qualified and esteemed individuals. The National Health &
Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has approved the Gallipoli Research Foundation as an Approved Research Institute
(ARI). Accordingly, donations of $2 and more are tax deductible.
The Foundation’s major theme will be translational research which focuses on the translation of basic research discoveries
into clinically relevant diagnostic and therapeutic tools – from the bench to the bedside. Greenslopes can offer the ideal
translational environment with researchers and clinicians working together and learning from each other.
The proposed components of the Foundation’s strategy are:
• The establishment and development of the Centre for Immune and Targeted Therapies
• The establishment and development of the Centre for Prostate, Urological and Gynaecological Cancer
• Establisment of a competitive granting program
• Establishment of tissue bank and associated clinical pathology database.
• Development of Clinical Trials unit
• Development of a molecular pathology and imaging unit, infrastructure for:
- molecular pathology equipment
- gene/proteomic investigations
- molecular imaging
• Development of research programs where specific funding has been received.
The name Gallipoli is above politics and is part of Australian folklore. It is one of the few words spoken in Australia with
something approaching reverence. Gallipoli reflects the Anzac tradition of ingenuity, mateship, courage and perseverance.
We will strive to demonstrate these attributes so that the Gallipoli Research Foundation serves as a lasting memorial to our
forebears.
