Most orders will ship within 24 hours by UPS Ground unless otherwise requested. Expedited shipping via 3 day,
2 day and Next Day Air is also available. If items are too large or heavy for our normal carriers we can suggest
alternate methods to ship these items.
All bids and quotations are firm for 30 days, unless stated otherwise in writing. Bid prices are subject to all Federal,
State, and Local taxes.
RETURN POLICY AND DAMAGE CLAIMS:

If a shipment arrives damaged, please note the damage on the shipping paperwork before accepting the shipment.
All claims of damage and shortage must be documented and communicated to Designlab within 15 days of receipt of
goods by customer.
Restock Fees: Any items to be returned or exchanged must be in sellable condition. Color media and patterns
will incur a minimum 50% restock fee. Designlab reserves the right to determine whether the items are in suitable
condition for restock return.
Please provide an order or an invoice number when returning items for restock, repair, or credit.
RENTALS:
We maintain a large rental stock of conventional and automated fixtures, dimmers, control consoles, cable, followspots, and
effects equipment. Rentals may consist of individual pieces of equipment or full productions, and are priced according to
duration. Please call us when you need rental equipment for your production.
REPAIRS:
We support all of the equipment that we sell, both in and out of warranty. Our on staff factory-authorized technicians can
repair equipment either in our shop or onsite. For equipment that we do not sell, we support you the customer, by offering
advice, repair services, and/or industry contacts to identify who can help. For emergencies, we offer a wide variety of rental
equipment to replace your gear while it is down for repairs.
CONSULTING:
We work with architects, engineers and end users as an ongoing part of our commitment to theatres and performance
organizations. We will be glad to offer comments, suggestions or if the project warrants proposals and drawings as well.
While answering questions is always free, actual consulting time, site visits and drawings may incur charges depending on
facility location and project requirements. Please let us know how we can help.

FIXTURES - Fresnels & PARs
PARs, are another type of wash fixture using a Parabolic
reflector and a coiled lamp filament. PAR lamps produce
a harsh, oval shaped beam of light, and are typically available in Very Narrow, Narrow, Medium Flood and Wide Flood
beam spreads.
Fresnels are wash fixtures which use a spherical reflector and a
lamp with a wide flat filament. The lamp and reflector are in a
fixed relationship to one another and the ability to change the
beam of light from Spot to Flood is accomplished by moving the
lamp/reflector assembly either closer to or farther away from the
“Fresnel” lens. The Fresnel fixture is used where you want a
more diffused beam edge and softer shadows.

Ellipsoidals -
FIXTURES
The Ellipsoidal is the theatre “workhorse” because it produces an intense, sharp-edged beam of light that is very easily shaped. The
shaping ability is due to the elliptical shape of the reflector, giving the fixture two focal points. The first point is the center of the lamp
filament, the second point is at the “fixture gate” which is where the shutters are located and the pattern holder can be placed. Moving
the position of the lens barrel on an ellipsoidal fixture allows for a sharpening of the beam edge and gobo pattern image.

Cyc & Scoop - FIXTURES
Cyclorama / Borderlights have multiple lamps spaced evenly in a
row. They usually have 3 or 4 circuits for multiple color washes.
Lamp wattages can range from 50W to 1500W per lamp.
Scoops are fixtures that create smooth, even washes of
light over a large area. They are usually used as
worklights, flood lights or to illuminate cycloramas or
backdrops. Scoops can

Dimmer Discussion
Inside each dimmer there is a device called a
“choke” (the large donut shaped object with wires
wrapped around it). The “choke” acts as a shock
absorber for your lighting fixtures. When the
dimmer is dimmed, it is actually turning on and off
many times a second. This creates a number of
spikes in the power being sent to your lighting
fixtures, and transmits a vibration to the lamp
filiment itself. On stage this can be heard as a hum
or ringing sound. The “choke” helps to dampen
down these spikes and reduce the amount of
vibration effecting your instruments. In addition to
reducing the hum sound created, it also adds to the
lamp life and cuts down on radio frequencies
produced by the dimmer modules. Stray radio
frequencies can effect a number of theatre systems
from intercom to house sound.
Most high quality dimmers start their choke at 350
microseconds and go up from there. This means
that 350 microseconds before the spike of the
dimmer shutting on and off (60 x a second), a
small power ramp lasting 350 microseconds is
supplied to ease the jolt of the incoming power.
The result is a quieter dimmable lighting system.

Fog Impact Study
A comprehensive study jointly funded by Actors’ Equity and the
League of American Theatres and Producers has set limits on
the amount of fog that can be safely used on stage. The study
states that if exposure levels are kept within certain limits,
performers should not suffer adverse impacts to their health or
vocal abilities.
Performed by doctors at Mt. Sinai School of medicine in New
York, the study took three years to complete and looked at over
400 actors performing in 16 different Broadway musicals during
the 1997-1998 season. Tests were conducted during performances and rehearsals to measure levels of exposure over the
course of an entire performance and the results were used to
determine potential exposure to the actors.

Rosco’s Iddings Deep Colors
Iddings Deep Color is manufactured with a high percentage of ground pigment in a
flexible casein binder, giving the paint an ultra-matte finish with excellent adhesion to
absorbent materials. Deep Colors can also be re-wetted and diluted, allowing for a
variety of painting techniques. Due to the fragile nature of Iddings paints products
we do not carry them in stock, but they can be ordered by request.

Sharkstooth Scrim
Scrim is a unique and very versatile scenic fabric that has an
open weave, and is especially useful for “reveal” effects.
When lit from the front at a high angle it appears opaque, but
when lit from behind this scrim becomes transparent. Scrim is
also virtually transparent for the transmission of sound. Sold
by the yard, and available in black, white, grey and blue, all
scrim is sold as raw fabric. Custom scrims with top finishing

RIGGING HARDWARE
CHOOSING THE RIGHT TRUSS
To determine the right type of truss for the job, establish the loading requirements carefully and
determine the exact load on each truss section. Confirm that the truss is capable of supporting the required loads by
referring to the structural engineers report for loading information. Make sure that you have the loading figures for
your specific truss and that you fully understand them, when in doubt ask. Determine the amount of weight loaded on
flying points, as this will have a bearing on the truss type used. Don’t forget to take the whole weight of the rig
including the hoists into account, when determining how much
weight is to be suspended from each rigging point. Your hardware (nuts, bolts, turnbuckles, etc.)
should all be “rated” and suitably sized for your application.

Designlab Chicago
The MS-200 is a full- featured master station combining an
outboard power supply with the facilities to control two independent communication circuits. Equipped with rack-mount or
optional side panels, incorporating handles. The universal input
power supply may be connected to any electrical supply from 100
to 240 volts, 50Hz or 60Hz. It is UL, CSA, TUV and CE approved.
Output is a full 2.0 Amps at 24VDC, which is sufficient enough to
operate 66 BP-1 beltpacks. Provisions are made for linking the
two circuits together during rehearsals, etc. A paging output is
available for use through a separate paging amplifier. The
operator of the MS-200 may connect a headset or handset, or plug
a gooseneck microphone into the front jack and listen through the
speaker. Auxiliary programs can be inserted into either or both of
the communications circuits.

The PS-2 is a high regulated 24VDC 2 Amp power supply capable
of supporting 66 BP-1 belt packs. It has 3 XLR ‘s on the rear
panel, which may be combined using front panel switches, or

lights for circuits A and C make it possible to use the PS-2 as a

Rental Terms
- Security deposits for rental contracts over $500.00 are required for new customers and for C.O.D. accounts.
- AMERICAN EXPRESS cards or personal checks will not be accepted for security deposits.
- There is a minimum $25 / hour service fee for all cleaning and maintenance required beyond normal wear and tear.
- All claims of damage or shortage must be made within 24 hours of receipt of goods.
- Rental returns are due by noon, unless otherwise agreed upon by Designlab staff and customer.
- Rental agreements cancelled with less than 24 hour notice will incur a 15% reshelving fee unless otherwise agreed upon
by Designlab staff and customer.

We have a vast inventory of hardware, analog converters and
cable, as well as rare components. Please contact us with your

Fixtures are shipped with color frames, safety cables, and Cclamps, unless you specify otherwise. Most fixtures have a 20A
stage pin connector. Spare lamps (1 per 10 fixtures) are included
on all rentals of conventional fixtures. Spares, burnouts included,
must be returned for credit.
Please let us know what items we should add to our rental
inventory so that we can serve you better.
If you are interested in purchasing preowned equipment, please
contact our rentals coordinator for availability and pricing. All
preowned equipment comes with a 30 day warranty on parts and
labor.
