When you create your Online Application Account it is hosted on the NHS Scotland Web Server
and NHSGGC staff have no access to this account. You account remains active for a maximum

JOB PURPOSE
The post holder is involved in providing a specialised clinical technical service for cancer
patients who require a course of radiotherapy treatment at the Beatson West of Scotland
Cancer Centre or satellite radiotherapy unit.
The work requires highly developed clinical and technical skills necessary to carry out the
design and manufacture of specialised treatment delivery aids and positioning devices crucial
to the accurate delivery of radiotherapy treatment. Other duties include patient assessment,

SCOPE AND RANGE
Staff involved in the delivery of the services are as follows:1 Section Manager / Specialist Clinical Technologists

The post holder as part of the team is involved in the efficient throughput of patients and the
clinical work required in meeting treatment deadlines.
All the clinical technical work carried out by the practitioner clinical technologist is managed
by the section manager.
Consultant Clinical Oncologists refer patients from throughout the West of Scotland for this
vital service. The patients for this service range from babies/children to the very elderly;
within this category there are patients with various degrees of mental and physical
disabilities. This presents challenges when targeting their specific cancer treatment site,
which means the post holder must utilise their specialist knowledge, clinical experience and
technical skills to provide a range of suitable treatment aids crucial to the accurate delivery
of radiotherapy treatment.
It is envisaged that Band 5 Clinical Technologists will be based either at the Gartnavel campus
or at the satellite centre, but there may occasionally be the need to transfer between sites for
operational reasons.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Organisational/Professional
1 Involved in the care and safety of patients whilst attending the Mould Room in
preparation for radiotherapy treatment.
2 Involved in the planning and organising of the workloads to meet clinical deadlines for
patients attending Simulator, CT Simulator and Radiotherapy Treatment Units.
3 Use specialised knowledge and experience to promote and develop very high
professional standards in all aspects of work within this Department.
4 Involved in the Radiotherapy Quality Management System for all work including the
monitoring and signing of work carried out and the checking procedure of such work.
5 Contributes to the writing of new work instructions and protocols for the Radiotherapy
Quality Management System and reviewing existing work instructions to maintain the
high standards set within the Beatson Oncology Centre.
6 Practitioner Clinical Technologist in Mould Room Clinical Technical Services provides
assistance to other staff groups regarding patient planning procedures.
7 Assists in COSHH Risk Assessment regularly and comply with all safety precautions
necessary.
8 Ensures implementation of policies and proposes changes to practices for their own
work area.
9 The post holder must follow all trust policies within the directorate.

10 Involved in the use of thermoplastics to manufacture Beam Directed Shells for the
accurate delivery of radiotherapy treatment to specific anatomical sites.
11 Involved in the detailed anatomical sculpting and shaping of wax compensators
required as beam-modifying devices used to treat specific cancer sites.
12 Involved in the taking intra-oral impressions to manufacture Dental Mouth Bites.
13 Involved in the manufacture of Customised Shielding Blocks, Lead Masks, Electron
Cut-outs and Jigs.
14 Assist in the manufacture of Stereotactic masks and sarcoma Boards.
15 Ensure that all necessary details regarding planning, setting up and treatment of
patients are documented, communicated and understood by the treatment staff.
16 Ensure high levels of accuracy are maintained to minimise the risk of error to the
patient.
17 Responsible for ensuring details regarding planning, setting up and treatment of
patients are documented, communicated and understood by the treatment staff.
Education/Training
18 Involved in the teaching and demonstration of Mould Room techniques to junior doctors
and other professional staff groups. Also involved in the supervision and training of
less experienced staff and students.
19 The post holder must attend appropriate training courses, seminars and workshops as
part of their Continuous Professional Development.
20 The post holder accommodates staff visiting the Department by providing information
on techniques, working practices and demonstrations of equipment.
21 Involved in the supervision, training of student Radiographers in Mould Room
technology as part of their BSc Honours Degree Course.
Research/Development
22 Occasionally involved in Research & Development Projects within the Department
concerning immobilisation devices and beam modifying treatment aids. Contribute to
work instruction for such new devices and ensure they are brought safely into use.
23 Participate in Audit to assess the impact of new treatment developments and their
effect on current clinical practices to improve the service.
24 Participate in Clinical Governance and Clinical Audit as required to ensure maintenance
of standards and improvements in care.
Safety
25 Responsible for ensuring that all equipment faults, accidents and incidents and unsafe
practices are reported to their section manager.
26 To ensure compliance with IR (ME) R and Local Radiation Safety Rules.
27 The post holder is required to take appropriate action during emergency or non-routine
situations (fire, cardiac arrest) and when treating patients with infectious diseases.

1 The post holder is expected to demonstrate and act on the responsibilities placed upon
them under the Health & Safety Work Act 1974 to ensure that the agreed safety
procedures are carried out to maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors
and staff.
2 Responsible for entering patient information into Par Scientific Computing System,
using CAD software required in the manufacture of customised shielding blocks used in
patient treatment.
3 Inputting, extracting and modifying patient information on ARIA.
4 Use of e-mail to communicate with multi-disciplinary staff groups and other internal and
external agencies.
5 Keyboard skills for computer work.
6 Use of word processor to develop and create reports, memos, letters and
spreadsheets.
7 Computer skills required to research literature in medical and scientific cancer
information for educational purposes.
8 Use of telephone to communicate with Medical Staff, Multi-Disciplinary Team Members,
Suppliers, Pharmacy Stores, Reps, Patient’s Relatives and Carers.
9 Reading the patients’ case notes and booking slip to extrapolate information required
for communicating relevant details in pre-treatment planning procedures.
10 Contribute to maintaining stock control/supplies in the Mould Room.

DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS
1 The post holder is involved in making clinical and technical decisions when dealing with
their workload within the boundaries of existing protocols.
2 Assess and evaluate changes in patient’s general condition affecting suitability for
treatment planning procedures within the Mould Room.
3 The post holder exercises the ability to challenge any interaction, which fails to deliver a
quality service to internal and external customers and brings this to the attention of their
section manager.
4 Participate in development of action plans to address any systems failure.
5 The post holder is required to interpret information and facts from referring consultants
to determine individualised patient pre-treatment Mould Room planning procedures and
seek section managers support if required.
6 Use professional judgement and training in carrying out tasks and duties and giving
direction to other multi disciplinary staff.
7 Make judgements and take actions when appropriate concerning treatment planning
procedures and treatment delivery deadlines and seek their manager’s support if
required.
8 The post holder uses their own knowledge and experience in situations which require
immediate problem solving for patients when called to a treatment unit or simulator.
9 The Post holder refers to their Section Manager for advice and guidance in some
situations regarding complex clinical and technical work.

COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS
1 Engage in effective communication to patients’ relatives and carers’ complex and
sensitive information relating to Mould Room Pre-treatment Planning Procedures and
treatment side effects and reactions.
2 When communicating with patients personal information received can be of a highly
sensitive nature.
3 To perform pre-treatment planning stages, co-operation from the patient is essential
therefore it is necessary to use persuasive, motivational, empathic, negotiating and
reassurance skills e.g. the planning process may be changed at short notice if the
patients condition deteriorates.
4 Sensitively communicating with all cancer patients including terminally ill.
5 Recognising potential barriers to communication and assess how to deliver information
in a way that patients, relatives and their carers will understand.
6 Overcome cultural language and physical learning difficulties.
7 Communicate effectively with all patients including young children, elderly and disabled
their relatives and carers.
8 Communicate effectively with patients whose diagnosis makes this more challenging
including those with tracheotomies and brain tumours. These patients have difficulty in
expressing themselves verbally and can be frustrated and confused. The post holder
must effectively use communication methods to overcome such barriers to
understanding.
9 Communicate with empathy, support and understanding during all aspects of the
delivery of the Mould Room service to all patients.
10 Empathise with patients in receipt of bad news and adjusts methods of communication
to deal with emotional distress expressed by patients.
11 Communicating with Consultants in clinical Oncology complex clinical and technical
information regarding pre-treatment planning requirements for their patients.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
Physical Skills
1 Highly developed technical skills used in the manipulation of fine tools and
thermoplastic materials where a high level of manual dexterity and accuracy are
required in the design and manufacture of specialised treatment aids.
2 Hand and eye co-ordination required for aligning patients into treatment planning
position.
3 Hand and eye co-ordination when transferring and marking information such as laser
levels and treatment field outline (accuracy + or – 1mm) from a physics plan on to a
beam directed shell that requires wax.
4 Precision fixation of Beam Directed Shells onto patients for planning/treatment

Physical Effort
1 Lifting patients with or without handling equipment that requires moderate physical
effort for short periods (frequent).
2 Pushing wheelchairs and trolleys (frequent).
3 Pulling/pushing and manoeuvring patients into position on treatment planning couch
(frequent).
4 Lifting customised trays and ostalloy blocks - maximum weight 5 kg’s per tray.
5 Due to working procedures with patients there is the requirement to stand/bend and
kneel for short and long periods during a shift depending on the complexity of the
planning procedure.
6 Working procedures for operating machinery involves standing for long periods.
Mental Effort
1 Frequent requirement for concentration, listening, contributing and decision making at
meetings e.g. relatives/patient carers, radiographers, physics staff, consultants and
managements.
2 Observe patient behaviour and condition, which can be unpredictable during working
procedures e.g. certain types of brain tumour patients, patients with drug and alcohol
problems, very elderly and frail patients and young children.
3 Subject to constant interruptions from medical staff, radiographers, physics staff,
radiotherapy assistants, nursing staff and clerical staff via telephone and personal visits
which requires immediate attention which means the post holder must change from
what they are doing to deal with the problem. This occurs several times during the day.
4 Concentration required when responding to calls from Simulator, CT Simulator and
Treatment Units to urgently deal with a patient problem e.g. treatment set-up, Beam
Directed Shell not fitting properly and Laser Level not in alignment (frequent).
5 Concentration required when extrapolating relevant information from a physics
treatment plan and transferring the details onto a Beam Direction Shell (daily).
6 Concentration required when operating machinery in the Mould Room (daily).
Emotional Effort
1 Communicating with distressed, anxious and worried patient’s relatives and carers
(frequent).
2 Working with terminally ill patients (frequent).
3 Working with patients in pain (frequent).
4 Working with babies and young children and coping with their emotionally distressed
parents (occasional).
5 Attend to patient’s relatives and carers following receipt of bad news (frequent).

1 Dealing with verbally abusive patients, relatives and carers.

immediate appropriate and decision making skills e.g. changing plans at short notice,
staff sickness and patient cancellation.
3 Working with terminally ill patients.
4 Paediatric work, when working with young children, unpredictable behaviour.
5 Working with children who are under anaesthetic.
6 Planning work particularly meeting deadlines e.g. completion of work for CT, CT
Simulator and the treatment machines.
7 Planning patient visits to allow the completion of all tasks in a timely and efficient and
professional manner.

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB
1 A Degree in Medical Technology or relevant discipline is essential. An HNC/HND or
equivalent qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent degree will be accepted
provided the knowledge, training and experience profile matches the requirements of
the post.
2 Registration in the Voluntary Register for Clinical Technologists (VRCT) held by the
institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) is desirable at this level.
Membership of IPEM, at an appropriate level, is desirable.
3 Minimum 2 years experience post degree/HND.
4 The post holder will have specialist knowledge, clinical and technical skills acquired
through short theoretical courses and relevant practical experience in a broad range of
techniques.
5 The post holder at this level will continue to develop their specialist clinical technical
skills. The knowledge gained by professional qualifications, practical experience and
training are required to keep up to date with changing technology in the treatment of
cancer patients.
6 Knowledge of Anatomy, Physics and Radiotherapy Planning techniques.
7 Effective communication skills.
8 Ability to work on own initiative.
9 Experience acquired by working closely with clinicians/practitioners in specialist areas.
