Location: Radiotherapy Department at Beatson West of Scotland Cancer
Centre, Gartnavel General Hospital or at the Lanarkshire
Beatson. The post- holder may be expected to work in either location.
1. JOB PURPOSE
The post holder is involved in providing a specialised clinical technical service for cancer patients who require a course of radiotherapy treatment at the Beatson West of Scotland
Cancer Centre or satellite radiotherapy unit. The range of treatments delivered at the
Lanarkshire Beatson may be limited, and therefore the full range of techniques and equipment may be less extensive.
The work requires highly developed clinical and technical skills necessary to carry out the design and manufacture of specialised treatment delivery aids and positioning devices crucial to the accurate delivery of radiotherapy treatment. Other duties include patient assessment, pre-treatment and treatment planning procedures, the manufacture of customised ostalloy shielding blocks, clinical audit and research and development projects.

4. SCOPE AND RANGE
Staff involved in the delivery of the services are as follows:-

The post holder deputises for the section manager and is responsible for the effective operational duties of the mould room clinical technical service.
The post holder as part of the team is involved in the efficient throughput of patients and the clinical work required in meeting treatment deadlines.
Consultant Clinical Oncologists refer patients from throughout the West of Scotland for this vital service. The patients for this service range from babies/children to the very elderly; within this category there are patients with various degrees of mental and physical disabilities. This presents challenges when targeting their specific cancer treatment site, which means the post holder must utilise their specialist knowledge, clinical experience and technical skills to provide a range of suitable treatment aids crucial to the accurate delivery of radiotherapy treatment.
It is envisaged that Band 6 Clinical Technologists will be based either at the Gartnavel campus or at the satellite centre, but there may occasionally be the need to transfer between sites for operational reasons.
5. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Participates in the Radiotherapy Quality Management System for all work including the monitoring and signing of work carried out and the checking procedure of such work by all staff.

Contributes to the writing of new work instructions and protocols, reviewing and making changes to existing work instructions to maintain the high standards set within the
Beatson Oncology Centre.

Assists in COSHH Risk Assessment regularly and complies with all safety precautions necessary.

Ensures implementation of policies and proposes changes to practices for their own work area.

Uses specialised knowledge and expertise to promote and develop very high professional standards in all aspects of work within this Department.

Specialist Clinical Technologists in Mould Room provide advice relating to pre-treatment planning procedures to other staff groups.

Involved in planning and organising workloads to meet clinical deadlines for patients attending Simulator, CT Simulator and Radiotherapy Treatment Units.

The post holder must follow all trust policies within the directorate.

Involved in the management and safety of patients while attending the Mould Room in preparation for radiotherapy treatment.

Involved in the teaching and demonstration of Mould Room techniques to junior doctors and other professional staff groups. Also involved in the supervision and training of less experienced staff and students.

The post holder must attend appropriate training courses, seminars and workshops as part of their Continuous Professional Development.

The post holder accommodates staff visiting the Department by providing information on techniques, working practices and demonstrations of equipment.

Involved in the supervision, training of student Radiographers in Mould Room technology as part of their BSc Honours Degree Course.

Occasionally involved in Research & Development Projects within the Department concerning immobilisation devices and beam modifying treatment aids. Contribute to work instruction for such new devices and ensure they are brought safely into use.

Participate in Audit to assess the impact of new treatment developments and their effect on current clinical practices to improve the service.

7. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS

The post holder is involved in making clinical and technical decisions when dealing with their workload within the boundaries of existing protocols.

Assess and evaluate changes in patient’s general condition affecting suitability for treatment planning procedures within the Mould Room.

To perform pre-treatment planning stages, co-operation from the patient is essential therefore it is necessary to use persuasive, motivational, empathic, negotiating and reassurance skills e.g. the planning process may be changed at short notice if the patients condition deteriorates.

Recognising potential barriers to communication and assess how to deliver information in a way that patients, relatives and their carers will understand.

9. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
Physical Skills

Highly developed technical skills used in the manipulation of fine tools and thermoplastic materials where a high level of manual dexterity and accuracy are required in the design and manufacture of specialised treatment aids.

Hand and eye co-ordination required for aligning patients into treatment planning position
3
Hand and eye co-ordination when transferring and marking information such as laser levels and treatment field outline (accuracy + or – 1mm) from a physics plan on to a beam directed shell

Precision fixation of Beam Directed Shells onto patients for planning/treatment purposes.
Physical Effort
1
Lifting patients with or without handling equipment that requires moderate physical effort for short periods (frequent).

Pushing wheelchairs and trolleys (frequent).

Pulling/pushing and manoeuvring patients into position on treatment planning couch
(frequent).

Lifting customised trays and ostalloy blocks - maximum weight 5 kg per tray.

Due to working procedures with patients there is the requirement to stand/bend and kneel for short and long periods during a shift depending on the complexity of the planning procedure.

11. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB

A Degree in Medical Technology or relevant discipline is essential. An HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent degree will be accepted provided the knowledge, training and experience profile matches the requirements of the post.

Registration in the Voluntary Register for Clinical Technologists (VRCT) held by the institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) is desirable at this level.
Membership of IPEM, at an appropriate level, is desirable.

Minimum 5 years experience post degree/HND (3 years as a Practitioner Clinical
Technologist) is desirable
