At the end of the day each and every item you read on “The Monty” has a common denominator; it has to do with heat treating and we are proud to say that this will always remain our focus. So send us your press releases, announcements, photos and thoughts and as long as it is relevant to the industry we will be glad to work with you. News Where are they now? Dick Wagner. We used to spend a great deal of time with Dick Wagner a manufacturers rep for the heat treating industry who was based in Indianapolis, Indiana. At differing times he worked with TJ Wright and Pat Torok representing companies such as AFC-Holcroft and Wirco. We lost touch with Dick but as it turns out he is happy and healthy and enjoying retirement. We see that SBS Corp. of Florida has a fairly new Manufacturing Manager a fellow by the name of Michael Rebula. SBS is best known for their line of air cooled quench oil coolers. www.themonty.com Monday Morning Briefing. Recently we mentioned a fire at commercial heat treater Advanced Heat Treating in Ridgway, PA. As a follow up to this story we now have a cause as you can see below. There is no doubt in our minds that water in quench oil and oil build up in furnace venting are the two major causes of heat treat fires. “RIDGWAY — A fire Feb. 17 at Advanced Heat Treating in St. Marys has been ruled accidental. Ridgway-based state police said Wednesday the state police fire marshal and Crystal Fire Department (St. Marys) investigated the fire, which happened at 11:50 p.m. Feb. 17, originating in a gas fueled heat-treated furnace located in the northeast corner at the rear of the building. Police said an operator at the furnace pulled a hot metal load and placed the metal into quench oil used to temper the metal by cooling it down. Upon placing the metal in the oil, the oil began to react with water that accidentally had been mixed with the quench oil. This caused the quench oil to spill out of the furnace and onto the floor, where it caught on fire, police said. The estimated damage was $750,000. Police said the business did have insurance”. Thom Coughlin is retiring from the heat treat industry-in case you don’t know Thom he most recently worked with Plansee USA as Mid West Sales Manager for 15 years, prior to that worked with Marathon Monitors (Cincinnati) from 1991 through 2000 Before that he worked with Ipsen Intl/Surface Combustion and going way back he spent many years in the Western USA working in hard rock mines as the plant Metallurgist for various mining companies. Quite an impressive work history. French vacuum furnace builder B.M.I. has a new rep in Brazil, a fellow by the name of Milton Machado. While we wish him the best of luck the Brazilian heat treating market is not one which is exactly thriving these days so we hope he is on salary and not commission. PhoenixTM whose banner ad can be found on this page sent us this press release. "PhoenixTM will supply a ‘hot box’ system to a major US & European manufacturer of aluminum extrusions for the aerospace industry. The system will be engineered to withstand a full immersion water quench during the solution heat treatment process, and will use 2 x 20 channel data loggers to monitor temperatures throughout the furnace from up to 40 thermocouples. Their aim initially is to be able to gather as much temperature data as possible during a profiling trial with a view to optimizing the heat treatment operation. In the future the system may also be used to carry out regular TUS surveys as part of their ongoing NADCAP accreditation. www.themonty.com Down in Mexico we hear that commercial heat treater HT-MX Tratamientos Secundarios in Chihuahua is adding some more capacity in the form of a couple of used batch IQ furnaces. HT-MX Tratamientos Secundarios was founded in 2012 as Procesos Térmicos HTMX SAPI de CV. in the city of Chihuahua, Mexico. An organization by the name of Metalspain seems to regularly hold small heat treating exhibitions around the world with one coming up in Queretaro, Mexico this year. We have never attended one of these events and don't know of many people that have but they certainly are an aggressive bunch. A friend of ours in the industry has now received an e-mailed invite from the organizers 417 times if you can believe it. And we thought the show in Shanghai was bad! Business Opportunities. UK furnace manufacturer Thermserve very recently shipped a gas nitriding furnace to a customer in Texas. “Thermserve Ltd has shipped a large gas nitriding furnace Texas in the USA. The Gas Nitrider is to be used for nitriding extrusion dies for extruders around the United States. A gas nitriding furnace is used to form a very hard surface onto the extrusion dies. Both brand new dies and used dies are nitrided between each use as they get older. This is normally carried out a 535C in an ammonia rich atmosphere. Nitriding is initiated when gaseous ammonia is cracked or “dissociated” using a steel surface as the catalyst at about 480C. Active nitrogen produced during this reaction moves into the surface of the steel and combines with Chromium and other alloy constituents to form their respective “nitrides”. These nitrides are extremely hard (1200Hv to 1500Hv) and increase the average hardness of the surface layers of the steel. As a general rule, the processes will double the (surface) hardness of the original steel. Thermserve has built and supplied the furnace in association with RGB Metallurgical Ltd, of Burntwood, UK. Furnace characteristics include PLC/HMI control for fully automatic operation. Mass flow control is incorporated for accurate nitriding potential function; along with an accurate ammonia gas analyser. Multiprogramme recipes are included and the furnace is equipped with fast cooling, hydraulic lid and complete dissociation control." February 25, 2016. www.themonty.com Commenting, Stephen Harris, Group Chief Executive said: “The Group delivered a resilient performance in 2015. Automotive and aerospace revenues moved ahead. However, the decline in oil price combined with downward pressures on our general industrial business led to Group revenues falling by 4% at constant exchange rates. The speed and effectiveness of management’s actions, in addition to the continued focus on improved mix, enabled headline operating margins to be sustained. Recognising the Group’s net cash position, the Board is recommending a further special dividend. The Group will continue to follow its strategy of investing in areas of robust revenue opportunity, notably in Specialist Technologies and in higher growth territories, as well as further enriching the mix towards higher added value services. The Board is confident that management’s continued focus on business improvements will generate good returns throughout the cycle.” Derrick Company/Cincinnati, Ohio. February 23, 2016. TRW, Lebanon, TN/Outsourcing. Outsourcing is a subject which always provokes a strong response amongst commercial heat treaters-namely are more manufacturers turning to commercials as opposed to heat treating in house? Here is an example of an auto parts maker who has decided to send their product out to be heat treated. TRW in Lebanon, Tennessee (now ZF) has always done their heat treating in-house in a combination of pusher and batch IQ furnaces. The company recently made the decision to send all the work out to commercial heat treaters and completely shut down their rather antiquated heat treat department. Based on the number of furnaces the company had this is a lot of heat treating being sent out. February 22, 2016. Lindberg/MPH. Anecdotal stories and formal news reports from PA lead us to believe this was not a bad fire but of course there is no such thing as a good fire in the industry. Hercules Heat Treating Corp./Brooklyn, NY. While this news item concerns zoning regulations in the NY City area, it certainly caught our attention because it is talking about a commercial heat treater whom we are reasonably familiar with. Hercules is capable of processing many types of parts but we know them best as one of the few commercials around North America capable of processing aerospace landing gear. We dug through our www.themonty.com Ipsen. "Ipsen recently shipped a horizontal-loading MetalMaster® vacuum furnace with 2bar gas quenching to a company in the Southwest U.S. for use in manufacturing catalytic converter products, which are then used by such industries as Aerospace, Automotive and Power Generation. In addition, the labor supplied is also warrantied if there is a defect in workmanship. www.lindbergmph.com" February 18, 2016. www.themonty.com “At a cavernous warehouse on the edge of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, Anthony Rizzo's 50 employees heat and cool parts for airplanes and missiles, dropping them into a 30-foot-deep, 1,600-degree salt bath and in vats of oil, rigging them with wire so they don't warp. Hercules Heat Treating Corp., which his father started in 1949 as a tool-and-die shop, has annual revenue of about $12 million. To keep Hercules going another 67 years, Rizzo needs his industrial zoning and steady supply of skilled labor. What he does not need is a glitzy streetcar route designed to jack up property taxes on the formerly gritty waterfronts of north Brooklyn and Queens. If the pressure [on property owners] to sell is there, then the pressure to change the zoning becomes a problem. That is what the de Blasio administration proposed last month, spurred by the gentrification of the areas and developers there. The city plans to fund the $2.5 billion project with the increased tax revenue it would generate by raising property values. "I don't see the benefit to us, really, as industry," Rizzo said. "The thing that would worry me is if the pressure [on property owners] to sell is there, and then the pressure to change the zoning becomes a problem." We all tend to think of the downturn in the oil and gas industries to be a Texas or Alberta story but the ramifications stretch far from these areas. We mentioned last week about a company in PA which supplies components to these industries which is on the brink of closing down. Bob Hill of Solar Atmospheres tells us what he is seeing in PA. "I hope all is well for you. I read today's Monty regarding Ipsco and wanted to mention to you that the western PA and north eastern Ohio areas were truly a boom for oil and gas exploration. The shale formation that they were successfully fracking is affectionately known as the Utica Shale. It is estimated this rich reserve along with newer drilling methods could supply every American's need for energy for many many decades. This area was very active in this business until the oil prices plummeted. Today the oil workers have capped the wells and have gone back to Oklahoma and Texas. Restaurants and hotels that used to be full are suffering. This is why companies affiliated with O&G like Ipsco and Parker Hannifin are closing their doors. I am sure we would all gladly pay $3.50 per gallon at the gas pumps again rather than lose these kind of manufacturing jobs forever". Where are they now? From time to time at a readers request we play the “where are they now game and see if we can locate a particular individual. A good friend asked if we could change this slightly to find a manual. "I am looking for an owner’s manual and operating instructions for a CVC Model PMC-32 35" diffusion pump. Could you please ask your www.themonty.com SSI/Southern Thermal Systems, Heat Treat Seminar. GKN Aerospace/Orangeburg County, SC. Aerospace company GKN down in South Carolina, USA is expanding their location, specifically the company is raising the roof and enlarging the pits and the reason for this is to acommodate a massive aluminum drop bottom oven. “GKN raised the roof of its second plant in the Orangeburg County/City Industrial Park to about 56 feet and expanded its digging pits about 20 feet deep. A lip skin is a part of the pod-like structure that houses the aircraft’s engine. Lip skins aim to provide the aircraft with better engine fuel economy and reduce engine noise to meet increasingly stringent airport noise regulations. "We are excited about the opportunity for GKN to have a second facility," said Gregg Robinson, Orangeburg County Development Commission executive director. “A variance was granted for the building to go to this site, and we are excited to have inlet lip skins manufactured in Orangeburg for Boeing,” Robinson said. The process at the Orangeburg plant will be vertically integrated, allowing for incoming material receipt, spin forming, machining, heat treating, chemical processing and all inspection, certification and shipping. As part of the manufacture of the lip skin, the product has to be heated to about 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit and then cooled in a bath for a short period of time. Jim Michels, the business communications manager for Eaton, says Eaton notified employees Thursday that the company was making changes in its transmission manufacturing facility. Michels says Eaton will move assembly, gear and shaft machining operations out of Shenandoah, while retaining machining of some components called "enclosures." The transition will result in 250 jobs cut in "six months or less" sources say. Eighty-five jobs will be retained to support ongoing operations. "Basically just 80 people are left," said the anonymous employee. "We've had upwards of 1,000 people in the past. In December, we let 70-plus people go. We were then down to 330. This will take us down to 80." Michels said that Eaton Corporation has 14 facilities in North America that support commercial vehicles and automotive vehicles. The company saw changes in the commercial vehicle industry, which prompted the decision to cut 250 employees, according to Michels. "Two of the manufacturers of trucks, years ago, made a strategic decision to go to a strategy where they make their own transmissions and engines," said Michels. "Another reason is that the market has been moving from manual transmissions to automated -- and the acceleration of that, within the marketplace, has gone much faster than anyone anticipated." One of Ipsen’s most common Ask an Expert questions (www.IpsenUSA.com/Ask-An-Expert) concerns finding leaks and their effect on the process and furnace. The newest post in Ipsen’s Finding Leaks in Your Vacuum Furnace blog series takes a close look at how to determine whether the furnace or the pumping system is the root cause of any vacuum-related issues. Oftentimes, one might immediately assume there is something wrong with the furnace when it begins to present signs of outgassing, dirty parts, performance issues, etc. While it’s possible that the furnace could be the source of the problem, it is important to avoid wasting valuable time going through all the steps of leak checking the furnace only to realize there’s actually something wrong with the capabilities and performance of the pumping system. As such, Ipsen experts outlined a few simple steps for determining whether the furnace or the pumping system is the guilty party in their newest Finding Leaks in Your Vacuum Furnace blog post; find out what these steps are at http://bit.ly/LeakCheck-10.” Ipsen’s blog, The Ipsen, Harold, also features informative videos, expert tips, throwback photos and useful resources, such as A Daily Checklist for Preventive Maintenance and their ongoing series, A Look Inside the Furnace (which examines hot zone types, best practices and maintenance). February 5, 2016. www.themonty.com When it comes to safety critical components, Bodycote’s Stockport plant has over 50 years of brazing heritage, from brazing Concorde’s heat exchangers to abradable felt-metal seals for modern wide body aircraft. Bodycote was one of the first subcontract heat treatment companies to provide metal joining services to industry, and has extensive experience in every generation of material including the latest single crystal alloys and super alloys. Honeycomb brazing is used to join critical honeycomb seals in jet engines, essential to the efficiency of gas flow through the engine. Brazing is a cost-effective process that eliminates the risks associated with standard welding. Brazing can be used to repair surfaces that are susceptible to corrosion, erosion and cracking. As demand increases for improved aircraft engine performance, the use of vacuum brazed feltmetal abradable seals is increasingly being adopted by major gas turbine manufacturers for flow path efficiency improvements. Bodycote’s vacuum brazed felt-metal seals provide superior clearance control in blade tip and labyrinth seal applications up to 760˚C, while minimising or eliminating wear on expensive rotating parts. Technical customer service is extremely important for brazing projects, and Bodycote’s engineers around the globe have the required knowledge and experience to advise customers from design to brazing manufacture. "One of the newest things we are working on here at Ipsen is our PdMetrics™ advanced predictive maintenance software platform. As you can probably tell, we are extremely excited about being able to offer this product to our customers. It’s already available as a retrofit or with the purchase of a new furnace. In addition, it functions as a furnace add-on that is not integrated with the furnace PLC, meaning we can easily and quickly retrofit it to the global installed base, including non-Ipsen brand furnaces. One of the things that our customers in the heat treatment industry mention is that they are always looking for ways to reduce unplanned downtime and unexpected costs. Now, imagine that your furnace has the ability to notify you before it needs maintenance, or if some other actions are required. Imagine you have a tool that allows you to anticipate disruption; a tool that gives you the power to optimize equipment performance and production efficiency. This is what the PdMetrics software platform does – it offers the power of possibilities. Building upon your existing maintenance and PM programs, it provides an automatic maintenance reminder that is based on how your furnace is performing. For example, rather than replacing your hot zone components or checking for discoloration based on how much time has gone by, the PdMetrics algorithms running in the background analyze a variety of data www.themonty.com J.L. Heat treating is heat treating in all areas of the world. Granted there are some small differences in the types of products heat treated, in some areas electrically heated furnaces make more sense than gas and sure furnaces in North America might tend to be larger than in India but these are all pretty small differences- a Batch IQ furnace is a Batch IQ furnace no matter where it is located. However visits to regions such as Europe and Japan reveal a difference which is perhaps subtle at first glance. The Japanese and the Europeans tend to have a far larger % of completely automated or “lights out” installations than in other parts of the world (the basic concept is a completely automated line requiring no operators whatsoever to load/unload or transfer). Where lights out installations are relatively common in Europe and Japan they are quite uncommon in North America-as a matter of fact only two come to mind. Why the difference? In Japan we were told that with the oldest population of any country in the world they just can’t find operators and automation picks up the slack. Makes sense. That’s not the reason though in Europe and the most common explanation we have heard has to do with hiring and firing workers. Namely that companies are reluctant to hire any more workers than they have to because the costs and difficulties of letting an employee go when production slows down are enormous. Again makes sense to us. North America with relatively young labor available and relaxed laws about letting employees go makes the choice fairly simple people are still cheaper than automation (we will temper these thoughts by saying that it depends upon which areas of North America we are talking about, the southern US is benefitting in particular because of low labor costs, weak unions and relaxed laws about laying off employees). The first two employees below are courtesy of Dowa and show a completely automated plant. The third photo, compliments of Ipsen show a completely automated batch IQ installation. February 3, 2016. ALD Vacuum Technologies Acquires ALD Holcroft. Now this is an interesting development, but one which probably will not result in any substantial changes. Speaking from experience I can say that the partnership was a successful one. Carlos Torres Jr./Mattsa Crio Interview. Carlos Torres of Mattsa/Crio in Mexico represents what I would consider to be the younger generation who is starting to take over the heat treating industry. We spoke with Carlos recently and these are his thoughts on the heat treating industry. 1) Carlos to start off why don’t you tell us who Mattsa Crio is and what the companies do? "MATTSA is a Furnace Company , we design, manufacture, service and retrofit Heat treat Furnaces in Mexico under AFC-Holcroft Licensing. CRIO is a Commercial Heat Treat Company with serveal locations in Mexico specialized in Hardening, Carburizing, Annealing and Nitriding processes." 2) Which are you most involved with and which do you prefer? "I like both companies, they are very different in many ways but I must say that I have been learning how to run a Commercial Heat Treat and I enjoy it very much, but MATTSA has been growing in the past years which makes it a great experience to handle all kind of challenging projects. I can tell you that building and installing furnaces is way more time demanding than commercial heat treating since every project is unique and always under tight deliveries. Commercial Heat Treating on the other hand requires more long term planning and strategy." 3) And how did you get involved with the industry? "When my father started the company years ago I started to work in the shop doing piping and service work on furnaces. This exposed me to the building and servicing of furnaces but not to the overall industry. For some time I continued to work part time on projects. Years later when I was about to drop school, Steve Thompson from SSI offered me a job in Cincinnati where I became really exposed to the Heat Treat market outside of just the manufacturing. My job was doing service calls and installations. One day Steve took me to a Heat Treat Show in Detroit where I met many Commercial Heat Treaters like Jim Canton www.themonty.com AMG Advanced Metallurgical Group is pleased to announce that ALD Vacuum Technologies of Hanau, Germany, has acquired the remaining 50% share of their joint venture company, ALD-Holcroft Co. Inc. of Wixom, MI, USA from AFC-Holcroft LLC of Wixom, MI, USA. ALDHolcroft, formed in 2005, acts as the exclusive sales agent for ALD's heat treatment product lines in the NAFTA region. The acquisition will enable AMG to streamline its heat treatment and metallurgy furnace marketing operations in North America, Canada and Mexico. About AMG. With approximately 3,000 employees, AMG operates globally with production facilities in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Czech Republic, United States, China, Mexico, Brazil and Sri Lanka, and has sales and customer service offices in Russia and Japan. February 3, 2016. from Flame Metals, Chip Keough from Applied process and John Hubbard of Bodycote (I even met you during that show Gord). I had the opportunity to talk to them and and they were all very encouraging when I told them that my father was building a Commercial Heat Treat company from scratch. Then I decided to go back to school and subsequently started to work full time for MATTSA and CRIO." Continue Reading February 2, 2016. One of the largest captive heat treaters in the US is Caterpillar, Inc., with a number of manufacturing locations including a very large location in East Peoria, Illinois. With sales down the company is laying off 670 employees and closing five plants including Building HH in East Peoria. This certainly got our attention as Caterpillar does a great deal of heat treating in Building HH. No word yet on how this will effect Caterpillar’s overall heat treating. Last week we told you how Conrad Knerr of commercial heat treater Metlab had passed away. Here are some further details. "Conrad Hering Knerr, 91, of Blue Bell, an engineer, business executive, and entrepreneur, died Thursday, Jan. 21, at his home in Whitpain Farm of complications from a fall in September. Mr. Knerr served in the Navy before emerging into the workforce to run Metlab Co., a firm founded in 1928 by his father, an expert in metallurgy. Over the years, he taught classes in metallurgy at Temple University and Spring Garden College. He served as a consultant to heat-treatment firms and was president of the Metal Treating Institute, an industry advocacy group. A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, at St. Thomas' Church, Whitemarsh, Bethlehem Pike at Camp Hill Rd., Fort Washington. Interment is private". We told you a little while back how furnace builder and commercial heat treater Dowa based in Japan was building a new commercial heat treat in Queretaro, Mexico. Work is www.themonty.com Monday Morning Briefing. We will start off in Ohio where it appears “alloy” company Qual-Fab has made an acquisition. “Qual-Fab, Inc. of Avon, Ohio announces the recent acquisition of all of the drawings and records of LEE WILSON ENGINEERING COMPANY and LEE WILSON INC. Lee Wilson Engineering Company, Cleveland, Ohio, formerly a major player in the bell annealing market supplying thousands of furnaces for the Steel and Wire Industries over the past 75 years dating back to the 1930s. Many of the major innovations involving radiant tube furnaces and high convection annealing have roots going back to the Lee Wilson Engineering Company. Most drawings, records, and designs are now the property of Qual-Fab, a major supplier of stainless and alloy fabrications to the metals industry. Qual-Fab has a strong emphasis on bell annealing equipment and can fabricate equipment to exact Lee Wilson designs and specifications, as required by the customer. As a major supplier currently to many OEM furnace builders, Qual-Fab supplies radiant tubes, high temperature fans, and a wide variety of stainless and high alloy fabrications to their custom designs. If we can be of service, please do not hesitate to call Qual-Fab, or contact us at www.qual-fab.net. Hightemp is the largest commercial heat treater in India with 5 Heat treat plants across India processing 9000 tons per month. Well the company will soon be getting larger with two new plants scheduled to be in operation by the end of 2017. The plant in Bidadi (Karnataka) is being set up primarily for a large German manufacturing company and the second in Ahmedabad (Gujarat) will be the largest in the state. The total investment for the two new plants is approx. $18 million USD. Please, please just make it stop! I swear every single heat treater around the world must be receiving daily e-mails from Sean Chen with the organizing committee of CIHTE2016 who has a heat treat show coming up in Shanghai this year. On any given day we must receive 2 or 3 e-mails from Sean, generally from different e-mail addresses. Well Sean I am not going to your silly show just because of all the e-mails. February 1, 2016. Accurate is one of the larger commercials on the US west coast. Coatings is an industry long associated to some extent with heat treating which is why we mention a new company in Virginia who recently installed two large capacity chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coating reactors. "Hardide Coatings, headquartered in Bicester, Oxfordshire, UK, has announced the opening of a new $7million production facility in Virginia, USA. The expansion has been driven by increased demand from North American customers, with sales to the US and Canada more than doubling during 2015. The new factory is expected to create up to 29 jobs over the next three years. The site in Martinsville-Henry County will service existing and new customers for the company’s patented range of hard wearing tungsten carbide coatings in the oil and gas and flow control markets. In addition, the company also plans to expand in the aerospace and advanced engineering sectors and develop applications for its newlypatented coating for diamonds".
