How big is too big?
Welcome to issue #10 Components/Quarries &
Pits.
A new Conference Board
of Canada report estimates
about $342 billion of new
investment in major resource
projects in Canada over the
next decade and expects over
65,000 job openings in the
resource sector. (The sector
(forestry, fishing, mining,
quarrying, oil and gas) employed 355,000 Canadians
in 2015.)
“The commodit y market is highly cyclical and
conditions are expected to
improve,” said Marie-Christ ine Bernard, Associate
Director, Provincial Forecast, The Conference Board
of Canada. “The sector will
continue to be an important
part of Canada’s economy
and provide well-paying
jobs for a great number of
Canadians.”
As commodity prices gradually improve over the next
10 years, employment in the
resource extraction sector is
forecast to resume growth.
Employment in the sector
is expected to reach close to
160,000 by 2025, but remain
well below the 2014 peak.
“Transport truck drivers,
heavy equipment operators,
underground production and
development miners, and
managers of all levels are
the occupations that are expected to be most in demand.
These four occupations alone
represent almost one-quarter
of all the employment opportunities that will need to be
filled,” outlines the report.
However, the majority of
the job openings will come
from the retirement of workers—42,000 resource sector
workers will reach retirement
age within the next 10 years—
more so than the expansion
of the sector. (Only 10% of the
new job openings will be due
to expansion of the sector.)

Liugong North America Introduces New Dressta S-Series Dozers
LiuGong North America, a
wholly owned subsidiary of
LiuGong Machinery based in
Liuzhou, China, introduced
the new Dressta TD-8S and
TD-9S dozers to North American construction equipment
dealers at a recent event in
Houston, Texas. Dressta is
headquartered in Stalowa
Wola, Poland, and is the sales,
marketing and after-sales and
service division of LiuGong
Dressta Machinery Sp. Z o.o.
“The new S-Series dozers
represent a real reinvigoration of the Dressta brand in
North America,” said Marcus
Menough, Director of Sales
and Marketing for LiuGong
NA. “They are industry competitive machines specified
for today’s performance and
operator standards with all
features, technical and environmental requirements.”
Dealers agreed. “These are
very well-designed, strong
and robust machines,” said
Pete Franssen, co-owner
of Seattle-based Jet City
Equipment, who attended
the event. “My criteria for
selling a machine is if I would
buy one myself. In this case,
I would.”
The TD-8S and TD-9S are
powered by QSF 3.8 Tier 4
final Turbo-charged Cummins engines, meeting US
EPA emission regulations and
delivering 70kW (94 hp) and
84 kW (113 hp) respectively. They are equipped with
Rexroth dual path hydrostatic
drive systems that transmit
full power to both tracks in all
conditions to ensure smooth
speed changes, pivot turns
and counter rotation. The
machines feature a strong six-
way C-frame complemented
by a robust undercarriage
that is available in two options – the standard LT
(long-track) version for bet-

Four Ways to Manage Your Fleet for Success

tough to keep risk management and resale value top

you’ve got the world at your
fingertips via the Internet,
the question has shifted from
merely “how” to “how best”
to dispose of surplus equipment. To bring in optimal
returns, here are four best
practices to follow.
ASSESS EQUIPMENT VALUE
Accurate est imates of
your fleet’s value allow you
to keep books up-to-date and
make data driven decisions
about what to sell and when.
A comprehensive assessment
of your fleet by a professional
appraiser can help secure
extra funding. An understanding of the age, mileage
or hours, frame condition,
maintenance records, and
current market conditions
will provide a more precise idea of how much your
equipment should sell.
CHECK YOUR INVENTORY
Will you need all of your
equipment down the road?
Or does the project pipeline
sit parked against the fence
for the foreseeable future?
Sending that equipment to
auction will save on insurance,
maintenance and expensive
storage costs. If you need similar machines further down

What It Leaves Behind
Colvoy Equipment,
Lambton Shores, and J&L
Henderson Excavating onJuly 11 demo’d the Herder
mowing bucket in Thedford,
Ontario.
The attachment allows
the operator to remove the
vegetation in the ditch drain
without disturbing the bottom. “It is a real advantage
to preserving turtle and frog
habitat. Normally an excavator bucket would dig out
the weeds. etc., and take the
turtle and frog habitat along,”
says Derek Scholten, General
Manager, Colvoy Equipment.
The attachment features
a low-maintenance knife
head connection with standard long knife attachment.
The cutter bar with spring
pressure holder provides
continuous knife pressure. Low-maintenance
self-sharpening T knives
come standard, but G knives
that you can sharpen yourself
are available as an option.
You can also choose from
different widths, from 2.50 to
5.50 metres (8.2 to 18 feet),
and even reach widths of
up to 8.60 metres (28.2 feet)
by combining two mowing buckets. Furthermore,
Herder has two ‘ultra light’
models in its range for use
with a mini excavator.
With the Herder fifth generation ‘MR’ mowing buckets, end-users can
remove the weeds while leaving frog and turtle habitats in tact.
Colvoy Equipment, Lambton Shores, and J&L Henderson Excavating perform
a ditching demonstration with a Herder mowing bucket in Thedford, Ontario.

Angus L. Macdonald Bridge Now More Than Halfway Complete
Construction on the replacement of the suspended
spans of the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge in Halifax is
more than half way complete.
Otherwise known as the
Big Lift, the $150-million
engineering marvel has had
a few ups and downs since
getting underway early last
year but most of the bugs
have now been worked out,
and steady progress is being
made on the project which is
aimed at extending the life
of the bridge and reducing
maintenance.
The Big Lift includes replacing the road deck, floor
beams, stiffening trusses,
and suspender ropes on the
suspended spans of the Macdonald Bridge which is one
of two suspension bridges
linking the Halifax Peninsula
to Dartmouth in the Halifax
Regional Municipality. Once
complete, the bridge infrastructure will be as good
as new.
General contractor for the
project is American Bridge
Canada, the same firm which
successfully completed a
similar job on Lions Gate
Bridge in Vancouver, B.C.
about 15 years ago. Company
Engineer John Callaghan
says the project is unique in
that it involves the complete
replacement of the deck and
stiffening truss of a suspension bridge while keeping it
in service during non-working hours which has only
been attempted once before
at Lions Gate Bridge.
The work has generally
gone according to plan,
says Callaghan, but adjustments have had to be made to
accommodate actual conditions. Specialized equipment
is being used including
strand jacks for heavy lifting, barges outfitted with
grillages, and cable crawlers
specific to the project.
American Bridge Company’s Dartmouth team is
made up of about 70 Ironworkers dispatched from
Local 752, a dozen engineers
and other project staff, and
various sub-contractors with
around 30 employees in total.
An additional half dozen
engineers from its Concord,
CA engineering office are
supporting the project and
located just a few miles from
the bridge, Cherubini Metal
Works Limited is the main
fabricator with more than
120 people working on the
fabrication at times.
Callaghan says they have
learned a lot from the project
including the importance of
comparing the behaviour
of the structure against the
engineer’s models. Weather
conditions and unexpected
bridge behaviour have been
the biggest challenges to date
but new ones could arise
over time.
“Main cable dehumidification and hanger cable
replacement will have their
own challenges and that work
is starting shortly. As we get
into the span raising operations, we may see some
unexpected bridge behaviour.’’
Jon Eppell is Project
Manager & Chief Engineer at Halifax Harbour
Bridges, the provincia l agenc y
responsible for
operating, maintaining, and
constructing bridges over
Halifax Harbour. He says the
past year has been a learning
curve for the project which
started methodically, slowed
for a bit, but has really hit its
stride now.
“We saw the removal of
sidewalks and bikeways and
preparatory work going on
much as was anticipated
but the segment replacement process and associated
learning curve was more
complex,’’ admits Eppell.
“Obviously, the segment replacement has many more
activities, people, and critical
activities happening to make
it a success. It took a while to
get these running smoothly
for everyone.’’
This was further hampered by winter weather that
caused air lines to freeze and
high winds that prevented
work from proceeding on
occasion. Once the segment
replacement became predictable, the accelerated
schedule started and great
progress has been made with
two segments installed on
most weekends. As of June
24, 22 segments had been
installed taking them past
the mid-way point.
He f e e l s t h e b i g g e s t
challenge has been keeping people focused on the
end goal rather than being
drug down when the segment replacement was not
happening as quick ly as
expected.
@EQJNEWS
“Everyone on the project
is dedicated, invested, and
continues to work hard. It is
just so much easier to work
hard when we are able to
see things going well with
segment replacement. We
are all pretty proud of what
is being done here.’’
It was difficult to get segments replaced overnight
in just 10½ hours so they
worked with the contractor to develop an alternate
scheme to have them installed on weekends.
“The move to weekends
reduces the risk of late openings on weekdays which
impact commuter traffic,’’
he explains. “Weekends
allow for the possibility of
installing multiple segments
and two segments have been
installed on six weekends.’’
Work recently began on
one of the most difficult
parts of the project above
DND; a workplace where
AUGUST 1, 2016
there are buildings, people,
and equipment. Eppell says
they are coordinating closely
with DND to ensure safety,
establishing communication
and clear zones.
The segment replacement
process changes significantly
during this part of the project. Instead of lowering the
existing segment to a barge
and lifting the new segment
from the barge, the segments
will be delivered on a vehicle
on the bridge, rotated and put
into place. The lifting gantry
will be modified to allow for
the rotation of the segments.
It will be a few new steps
for the team to learn and a
significant additional degree
of difficulty in a process that
is already complex.
“ The changes will be
broken down into steps
and the ironworkers will be
trained on the steps. We will
do the work on weekends,
which will for allow spare
time should it take longer
than planned to conduct the
new processes. We cannot
rush, and regardless the pressure to re-open the bridge,
we can only open the bridge
when we are confident that it
is safe for the public to use,’’
he stresses.

MLC650 Keeps Montreal Bridge Replacement on Track
Two Manitowoc MLC650s
are working on a project
to replace the Champlain
Bridge, which spans the
Saint Law rence River in
Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Signature on the Saint Lawrence Construction (SSLC)
is the engineering consortium assigned to the task.
The capacity and reduced
ground preparation made
possible by the MLC650’s
VPC-MAX attachment, as
well as the ease of use of its
Crane Control System (CCS),
are helping the team stay on
schedule.
Andre Mylocopos, approaches manager for SSLC,
said the company chose the
716-ton MLC650 because
of t he Variable Position
Counterweight’s (VPC) ability to enable high-capacity
lifts with minimal adjustments. The crane only needs
to be setup once and its
counterweight is adjusted
automatically based on each
lift. The optional VPC-MAX
attachment raises the crane’s
capacity to 770-ton using
fewer components and assembly steps than traditional
attachments.
“The MLC650 has better
chart than other cranes in
its class for the work envelope defined on this project,”
he said. “We are able to perform most lifts at less than
90 percent capacity, so this
gives us a comfortable safety
margin. The VPC-MAX is instrumental in giving us that
headroom without having
to drag a wagon behind the
crane. We actually eliminated a number of cranes from
consideration because they
couldn’t meet our needs without a wagon, which is a major
constraint due to the limited
work area. The MLC650s were
ready to go upon erection.”
The cranes are currently
tasked with lifting 220-ton
steel girders for the bridge’s
east approach. The dual
MLC650s will then be used
to lift 88-ton precast concrete segments to construct
the cable-stay bridge pylon,
Two Manitowoc MLC650s are proving essential in the construction of the
new Champlain Bridge in Montreal, thanks to the reduced ground preparation
made possible by the optional VPC-MAX attachment.
followed by a tandem lift to
erect the 440-ton lower cross
beam. After the completion of
the cross beam, the MLC650s
will be used to construct temporary support towers, and to
erect 220-ton pier caps and
additional girders.
CCS AND THE ELEMENTS
The MLC650 features the
CCS system which maintains
a standardized operating platform across all of Manitowoc’s
newer crane models. Yan Du-
guay, a crane operator for
SSLC, said that the company’s
operators found the MLC650
easy to use thanks to the intuitive controls made possible
by CCS.
“Our operators are enjoying the MLC650’s controls,”
he explained. “Compared
to other cranes I’ve used,
the computer system in the
MLC650 seems easier to
operate. That simplicity is
crucial on a jobsite where
time and safety are utmost
concerns. Since we are only
using Manitowoc cranes for
the bridge replacement, the
uniformity of easy-to-use
controls only makes the job
site more productive.”
As with all Manitowoc
cranes, the MLC650 also
performs well in low temperatures, making it particularly
well-suited for tough jobs in
Canada.
“In Canada, we need cranes
that can stand up to the elements. Manitowoc cranes
perform well in extremely
challenging weather conditions, which makes them
ideal for the Canadian climate,” Mylocopos explained.
“When you combine those
factors with intuitive controls,
you can see how Manitowoc
cranes are helping SSLC
maintain uniformity and
productivity on the jobsite.
We’re on track to complete
the bridge by December of

Ultimate ROI With Hitachi Rental Units
Continued From - A18
STAMP OF APPROVAL
Wilson said Stephenson’s
generally keeps Hitachi machines about eight years since
hours on the machines stay
low. Typically, the company
does one- to two-week rental periods, with demolition
customers renting for longer
periods. Those demolition
customers are an additional
reason the company carries
Hitachi excavators.
“Another reason we went
with Hitachi is our demolition customers,” Wilson
said. “They’re probably the
hardest on the units. Their
work is demanding and is
done in small, enclosed areas
the fleet,” Wilson said. “All
the attachments and buckets
need to fit. If we have a mix of
different brands, it becomes
more difficult to put orders
together. We have the same
wedge-style coupler on all the
Hitachi excavators so we know
which attachments will fit.”
for rent, Stephenson’s works
closely with its Hitachi dealer
Wajax Equipment.
“We have a good partnership with Wajax,” Wilson said.
“They offer good pricing and
service. Although we do all
our own repair work, we lean
on Wajax for warranty work.
They’re quick to respond and
can also help us with overflow
work. They help keep us up
and running.”
While Wilson can go on
with a list of good reasons
for carrying Hitachi excavators, he can also sum it up
succinctly.
“Hitachi helps us make
the most money due to reliability, uptime, customer
acceptance and residual
value; it’s one of the highest.”
Stephenson’s Rental Services Inc. is serviced by Wajax
Equipment, Mississauga,
Ontario.
A TRACK RECORD OF
EXCELLENCE
Stephenson’s tracks equipment exchanges any time a
unit comes off a site. Wilson

YOUR
MATERIAL
HANDLING
S LUTION
We understand how tough material handling can
be, so our wheel loaders are developed to be highly
durable, low maintenance and fuel efficient. Despite
popular belief, you don’t need a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to
be Tier 4 compliant. JCB’s NO DPF solution means no need
for periodic regeneration, meaning more up-time, more output,
more productivity and increased safety. JCB’s engine solution
was designed without a DPF because we know that time is
money. That’s why our wheel loader range is DPF free.
To learn more about our NO DPF solution,

OEM’S CHOOSE KOHLER
KDI ENGINE RANGE
The new KDI range of engines from Kohler Engines
is available in a number of
different models and power
ratings, and they are compliant with the Tier 4 Final/
Stage IV standards (56-100
kW (75-133 hp) power output
range).
The features of the KDI
range are based on the use
of high-pressure common
rail injection system (2,000
bar) of the latest generation
combined with G3S solenoid-type injectors aimed at
precise fuel metering during
the injection process.
An electronically controlled EGR” valve is included
for recirculating the right
amount of exhaust gasses
that are liquid-cooled by a
water/air heat exchanger.
The EGR system consists of
two cooling stages that make
it possible to optimize heat
exchange without increasing external dimensions. In
addition, the system is installed on the hot side, which
prevents the EGR valve from
seizing, improving reliability.
The valve train incorporates an architecture with four
valves per cylinder, designed
to house the injector in a perfectly vertical position and in
the very centre of the combustion chamber. In this way,
the cylinder is filled with the
exact amount of fuel which
is atomized and mixed with
air in the best way possible.
The construction solutions
devised by Kohler Engines
have made it possible to lower
the fuel consumption of KDI
engines by more than 10%
compared to other engines
within the same category,
claims Kohler.
Thanks to the four power
take-offs (PTOs) with two
additional PTOs at each
side (SAE A and SAE B) that
supplement the main and
secondary PTOs, designed
and positioned to draw the
greatest amount of power
from the engine.
The KDI range features
power density of 30 kW per
litre, torque output up to
110 ft-lbs at 1,400 rpm, and
good torque density, which
translates into an excellent
transient response, high
power availability at low engine speeds, and an increase
of up to 15% in machine productivity, explains Kohler.
Added to this are low
operating costs and easy
maintenance at intervals of
500 hours thanks to the clean
combustion that does not require a DPF, says Kohler. The
absence of the DPF means
that less space is required
in any application and that
productivity is enhanced as
operation never has to be
interrupted to regenerate the
filter. What’s more, no costly
thermal protection is necessary for preventing excessive
heat loss and the consequent
risk of fire. The result is that
the machines are compact
and easy to handle.
HAULOTTE GROUP
Haulotte Group, a French
manufacturer of aerial platforms and telehandlers,
chose the KDI 3404 in the
55 kW (73 hp) calibration for
two of its most successful
telehandlers: the HTL 4014
and the HTL 4017, which are
designed for markets subject
to the Tier 4 Final/Stage IV
standards.
As explained by Vincent
Mazzoleni, Telehandlers
Business Unit Manager :
“We were looking for an
engine that, in addition to
using emissions reduction
technology that does not
involve the use of DPF and
SCR, and would provide the
same torque delivery of the
Tier 3 engines we were using
previously.”
The company reports significant benefits by using KDI
engines. “[It] allowed us to
obtain a solid competitive
advantage, as we were the first
manufacturers of telescopic
handlers to introduce on the
market machines in the over10-metre segment equipped
with Tier 4 Final engines.”
The entire range of KDI
engines uses only DOC to
comply with the current
regulations for under 56 kW.
This allows manufacturers to
produce machines with compact engine compartments,
increasing operator visibility
and therefore enhancing safety and productivity. With this
system, the external dimensions are reduced and the
work cycle is not interrupted,
consequently increasing productivity. In addition, it is not
necessary to shield the machines to prevent excessive
heat loss and the consequent
risk of fire. In configurations
above 56 kW, the KDI 3404
engine complies with Tier
4/Stage IV Final emissions
standards thanks to the use
of SCR (Selective Catalyst
Reduction) to abate the NOx
in the exhaust gasses. The
The compact size of the KDI engines means easier
installation and greater application versatility.
special SCR solution chosen
by Kohler Engines helps to
underscore the “best fit” philosophy. The “all in one” SCR
system contains the DOC
(Diesel Oxidation Catalyst),
the MIXING Pipe and the SCR
in a single piece of equipment. The extremely compact
footprint of the whole system
and the possibility to fit it at
any angle greatly simplifies its
integration with the machine.
FIORI GROUP
Fiori Group is an Italian company operating at
the international level that
designs, develops, and produces off-road vehicles for
concrete production. For its
DB line of mid-segment concrete mixers with capacity
up to 2.5 cubic metres, Fiori
chose the KDI 2504TCR in
the 56-kW (75-kW) calibration. Then extended the use
of KDI engines, in the 90-kW
(120-hp) calibration (KDI
3404TCR-SCR), to its highend solutions with capacity
of five cubic metres.
“The characteristics and
performance features we were
looking for when considering
the use of new engines on our
products were focussed primarily on interchangeability
with other engine versions
in order to be able to use a
single platform for the entire
world market,” affirms Enrico
Santini, Managing Director of
Fiori Group, “Essentially, for
the emissions management
system employed, which allows the versions with power
greater than 56 kW to pass
from the Stage IIIB/Tier 4
Interim to the Stage IV/Tier
4 Final and therefore to the
subsequent stages in view
of ‘Stage V Built’ by simply
taking certain measures as
regards the layout.”
The KDI 3404TCR-SCR
model is Stage V Ready. The
innovative and compact “all
in one” SCR system, is in fact
designed to accommodate
the DPF, currently the only
technical solution capable
of meeting the requirements
for the particle numbering as
proposed by the European
Commission.
In the Kohler Engines engineering layout, the “all in
one” module will simply have
to be replaced with a new
module of exactly the same
size as the previous one. This
solution means that customers will not have to make any
changes to their application.
The DPF adopted will be
small, and its use will benefit
the already clean combustion thanks to the current
injection system.This will
consequently have a lower
number of regenerations
than any other DPF while
maintaining high levels of
productivity.
JCB
JCB chose Kohler KDI engines for their many lines of
compact machines, including
mini and midi excavators,
skid steer loaders, telescopic handlers, and teletruks.
The engines fitted on these
machines are branded JCB
Diesel by Kohler, underscoring the strong partnership
established between the two
companies in this operation.
The Kohler KDI engines
chosen by JCB (the KDI
1903TCR, KDI 2504M, and
KDI 2504TCR models) use a
common rail injection system
at 2000 bar, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), four valves
per cylinder, and a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) inside
the exhaust system.
“The decision to collaborate with Kohler Engines to use
their engines for our compact
JCB machines was guided
by the synergy between the
technologies used by both
JCB and Kohler to reach the
thresholds established by the
regulations. These compact
engines meet the strict EU
Stage IIIB and EPA Tier 4 Final
standards for exhaust gas
emissions without using a
DPF. This is perfectly in line
with JCB’s wide-ranging
engine strategy,” explains
Alan Tolley, JCB’s Director
of Engine Programmes. “The
shared design philosophy
adhered to by both companies to comply with the limits
established by the current
emissions regulations. These
characteristics make it an
ideal solution for the JCB lines
of machines.”
These engines enable
OEMs (original equipment
manufactureres) in their
designs to replace larger
displacement engines with
a model with considerably
smaller external dimensions
and consequently to reduce
fuel consumption without
necessarily having to redesign
the application. In the case
of new machines, the manufacturer can design smaller
engine compartments, which
increases operator visibility
and thus enhances productivity and safety.
In addition, the excellent
performance at low rpms
increases productivity and
contributes to reducing fuel
consumption by up to 10%
compared to the engines
of the competition, claims
Kohler.

Camso Makes Skid Steers All-Season Ready with Over-the-Tire Rubber Tracks
Camso, formerly Camoplast Solideal, engineers
Over-the-tire rubber tracks
(OTT HXD) to give conventional skid steers the extra
mobility to do more jobs in
more places.
With an ever-growing
range of attachments, skid
steer owners always have
the right tool for the job. But
many owners overlook one of
the most useful of skid steer
attachments: one that gives
tough traction to the ground
and superior flotation when
needed it most.
“The Camso OTT HXD
tracks improve a loader’s
flotation by five times over
the same machine running
on its usual pneumatic tires.
When the job calls for traction
and mobility in mud, on soft
soil, or in deep snow, the skid
steer’s flotation will determine whether you’re up to
the job, or stuck,” says Mike
Dembe, Market Development
Manager, North America –
Construction at Camso.
Camso has recently released a number of videos to
show how effective OTT tracks
are in deep snow or muddy
conditions. Like any good skid
steer attachment, Camso has

With the Terex Loegering
Versatile Track System (VTS)
attachment, skid steer operators can have the best of both
worlds—tires and tracks. VTS
offers skid steer operators the
ability to run their machine
with tires or as a full rubber
track undercarriage system
with suspension, depending
on the application. Operators
are able to convert their skid
steer loaders to a track loader
in under an hour.
VTS is a complete rubber
track undercarriage attachment that bolts directly to a skid
steer’s standard hubs. It utilizes
forward placement of the front
idler wheel to maintain flotation, as well as stability. By
placing the front idler significantly ahead of the front hub
position, the VTS is extremely
stable when digging and backing out of trenches, as well as
when hauling and dumping
heavy loads, says Terex.
VTS tracks provide bi-directional suspension, which
adjusts independently from
one side of the machine to
the other. The suspension
automatically applies the
track undercarriages back to
the ground maximizing track
foot print, evenly distributing
horsepower on uneven terrain.
In addition to increased
traction and flotation, the
rear idler positions the track
underneath the ballast of the
machine, providing stability
for grading up inclines and
traversing side hills.

hydraulics-specific functionalities. Rexroth developers
have integrated numerous
functions, which used to be

software of the servo-drive,
thus allowing higher control
accuracy and dynamics. The
control, which has been improved through interference
variable monitoring, suppresses “overshoots” when
pressure builds up, and integrated vibration damping
features position hydraulic

prevents pressure pulsation on gear pumps. These
pre-programmed controls

since simple parameterizing

New Ditch Witch Backreamers Improve Productivity in Challenging Conditions
Ditch Witch, a Charles
Machine Works Company,
has released a new line
of back rea mers to help
underground construction
operators improve productivit y in specialized soil
conditions and installations.
The new models include
the Sandhog HD (heav y
duty), Swab, and EZ backreamers. A ll models are
designed w ith customer
input in mind, jobsite efficiency, and long life.
“When it comes to productivity in complex soil
conditions, backreamers
are key to a successful horizontal directional drilling
(HDD) job,” said Jeff Davis,
Ditch Witch Product Manager of HDD tooling and drill
pipe. “We know the ability to
pre-clean a path or quickly
connect to a rig is often re-
quired. That’s why the latest
models build on the Ditch
Witch reputation for rugged,
long-lasting design and are
tailored to specialized soil
conditions, improving an
operator’s ability to efficiently install product.”
The Sandhog HD Backreamer is designed for sandy
and soft soils; the triple-action
Sandhog HD backreamer
combines aggressive cutting,
mixing, and packing for more
efficient pullback on the job.
Bore paths in unstable soil
conditions can often collapse
or fill with material in the
ground. This backreamer
uses a barrel-shaped body
to better sculpt a true-to-size
bore path.
Carbide cutting teeth and
spiral plates further improve
pu llback ef f icienc y and
lower torque while maxi-
mizing the capacity for fluid
flow. The crushed carbide
provides longer life to the
reamer and replaceable,
hardened steel nozzles increase fluid flow flexibility.
The Sandhog HD backreamer is available in 700-mm
(2.75-inch) shaft size with
2.0 IF threads and 83-mm
(3.25-inch) shaft with 2 3/8
API threads, ranging in diameter from 203-457 mm (8-18
inches). Compatible Ditch
Witch HDD rigs include the
JT9, JT20, JT25, and JT30.
The Swab Backreamer
is specifically designed for
rocky and hard soils, and
enables direct pullback
for Ditch Witch All Terrain
HDD rigs. Material left in a
bore can damage product
when deployed in restricted
spaces. This model effectively
pre-cleans the bore path by
efficiently utilizing fluid flow
and the carbide hard surface.
Material removal also helps
install product without enlarging the path beyond the pilot
size. By eliminating the need
for an expanded path, the
backreamer saves on fluids
and time.
The Swab backreamer is
available in an 83-mm (3.25inch) shaft with a 2.77 male
thread size, and for a diameter
of 140 mm (5.5 inches). The
model is compatible with the
JT30 All Terrain HDD.
The EZ Backreamer is for
small-diameter installation
jobs; the EZ backreamer
combines ease of use with
effectiveness. It was designed
for direct connection to the EZ
connect assembly, allowing
operators to quickly change
out tooling in a fast, safe, and
efficient manner, says Ditch
Witch. The model is equipped
for use in soft to mediumhard soil conditions.
The EZ backreamer is available in an 83-mm (3.25-inch)
shaft size with an EZ2 and EZ3
connection, ranging in diameter from 152-203 mm (6-8
inches). Compatible Ditch
Witch HDD rigs include the
JT20, JT25, and JT30.

QUARRIES & PITS
FOCUS
HILLHEAD
Many exhibitors debuted new machines and technologies at the 2016
Hillhead Show, June 28-30 at Tarmac’s
Hillhead Quarry near Buxton, UK.
More than 30 items of equipment were
put through their paces in the quarry
face area, including:
Excavators – Caterpillar 325F XE,
Hyundai HX250L, Liebherr R956,
Komatsu PC490LC, Doosan DL5505, Case CX500D, Hyundai HX520L,
and Volvo EC480E (in adjacent area)
Wheel loaders – Komatsu WA470,
Liebherr L586 XPower, Caterpillar 982M, Case 1121F, Doosan
DX380LC-5, Hitachi ZW370-5, and
Hyundai HL980
Articulated dump trucks – Bell B60E,
Caterpillar 745C, Doosan DA30, Komatsu HM400, Terex TA300, and
Volvo A40G (in adjacent area)
Dozers – Caterpillar D69 and Komatsu D61PXI-23
Loading shovels – Volvo L150H (in adjacent area) and Doosan DX380LC-5
Hydraulic breakers and buckets –
Miller, Remu, and Worsley Plant
Dust cannons – Corgin
Jaw crusher – Terex Finlay J-1170 AS
·· ·· ·· ·· ·· ·· ·· ·· A section of the quarry face at the north
end of the site was drilled and blasted
to produce around 14,000 metric tons of
run-of-quarry stone for demonstration
purposes. And the ‘toe’ at the foot of the
face has also been cleared to free up extra
space to host more demonstrations than
ever before.
POWERSCREEN HAS ITS

said “Powerscreen Pulse is extremely
user friendly, easy to access, and a
very valuable management tool for
the quarrying industry. With the Pulse
system I can monitor the location of
machines and check the hours on the

out the quality of the final grain and the
machine performance, as well as get
detailed information from experienced
Rockster employees and dealers.
The R900 with screenbox meets an
important customer demand: producing
defined final grain in only one step.
Based on a full hydraulic model, the
mobile track-mounted impact crusher
R900 is equipped with an entry opening
of 900 mm by 720 mm and a heavy-duty, four-hammer hard aggregate rotor,
making operations possible not only
in standard recycling applications, but
also in areas involving hard or abrasive
aggregates.
The hydrostatic drive system replaces
the industry normal clutch system, and
allows continuous adjustment of the rotor
speed, responding to various operating
conditions. The circular motion vibrating
screen with a weight of only two tons is
the perfect complement, says Rockster,
and can be assembled directly on the
main discharge conveyor of the machine.
No separate drive system is required to
power the screenbox and return belt as
they are driven by the additional hydraulic unit of the R900 (or R800 jaw crusher).

inclined screen, and previewed the
I-140RS impact crusher.
“We are looking forward with excitement to the upcoming Hillhead, 2016.
We return to the showcase event for our
industry with even more exciting new
product introductions and a fantastic
story to tell our customers. In total
we [had] 12 machines on display in
what [was] our largest ever presence
at Hillhead. Literally, every machine
on display at the show is a new product
introduction, been recently launched,
or a preview of another new model”
commented Nigel Irvine, Sales and
Marketing Director.

CLOUDY SKIES BUT SUNNY
WAYS FOR LIEBHERR
This year’s Hillhead show was extremely positive for Liebherr-Great
Britain with the Liebherr stand busy
on all three days. Numerous enquiries
were received from existing and potential customers with some enquiries
covering three sectors of Liebherr’s
construction product portfolio. Particularly strong interest was shown in
the XPower, the tracked excavators,
the recently-launched Mobilmix 2.5
concrete batching plant and the new
quick release hatch on the truck mixers.
The C-1540 direct drive cone crusher has been developed to satisfy the
requirements of the medium-sized
owner operator and contract crushers.
The machine has been well received at
a number of customer preview events,
and we are pleased with the initial order
levels being placed on the factory.
The Terex Finlay 674 inclined screen
is a small- to mid-sized inclined screen
has been specifically developed to appeal to the contract crusher and small
scale owner-operator looking to produce
four specification products from the
one platform.
Terex Finlay also previewed the new
I-140RS impact crusher in the main
working area in advance of its launch
in Q3, 2016. This exciting new machine
features an onboard detachable sizing
screen and recirculation conveyor for
producing a spec’d product. For applications not requiring utilization of the
recirculation system the conveyor can
be slewed into position and used as a
stockpile conveyor. Used in this configuration the machine can produce three
products from one platform.
Terex Finlay also demonstrated their
T-Link telematics remote monitoring
and fleet management system on in
their booth. Trained personnel were
on hand to demonstrate to visitors
how the T-Link system can help them
stay connected with and keep track of
their equipment, monitor work progress, manage logistics, access critical
machine information, analyze and
optimize machine performance, and
perform remote operator support.
MCCLOSKEY INTERNATIONAL TURNS
THE SPOTLIGHT ON CRUSHERS
McCloskey International featured
their J40V2 and J45R crushers, as well
as their I44 Impact Crusher Chamber.
The J40V2 worked in the demo area
with a tracked stacker, while a J45R jaw
crusher an I44 Impact Chamber were
on display at the McCloskey stand.
The J40V2 features a heav y-duty
cheekplate design, 1.02-metre (40-inch)
wide jaw and user-friendly control panel
with excellent machine diagnostics.
The J40V2 jaw crusher has enhanced
portability at 2.5 metres (8.2-feet) wide,
and is ideal for sites that require a high
degree of mobility. Productivity is delivered through the enhancements
to the jaw box, including a larger gap
between the crusher discharge and
main conveyor feedboot.
On display at Stand L22 was the
high-performance J45R jaw crusher,
which allows operators to produce a
crushed and screened final product
with one machine. The J45R combines
the productivity of the 2.86-metreby-0.69-metre (45-inch-by-27-inch)
single toggle jaw with a High Energy
Screenbox and a recirculating conveyor system to create a full crushing,
screening, and recirculating system.
Powered by a 263-kW (350-hp) engine,
the J45R has an I-beam plate fabricated chassis construction and boasts a
4.53-metre-by-2.15-metre (14.9-footby-7-foot) hopper with close to 9.0 cubic
yards of capacity.
The I44 Impact Crusher Chamber
will also be on display at Stand L22.
The impactor is built to the highest
standards with industry leading features such as four blow bar, 1.15-metre
(45.2-inch) wide impact chamber and
a wider crushing chamber with larger
opening and heavier impact rotor for
unrivalled production compared to
similar sized impactors. In addition,
four Bar vertical lift out quick change
hammers can be used with two high
and two low bars for high-capacity
primary crushing. The I44’s impact
chamber makes it ideal for a variety of
applications, including asphalt recycling, concrete recycling, rock crushing,
construction, and demolition.
Numerous enquiries were received
from both existing and potential customers and in some instances these
enquiries covered three sectors of
Liebherr’s product portfolio: cranes,
concrete technology, and earthmoving
machinery.
Colin Scott, wheel loader specialist,
reported that: ‘There was a lot of interest
shown in the XPower loaders especially with regards to the particularly
good access for the operator and easy
maintenance via clean, safe walkways.
The extremely low fuel consumption
of the XPower driveline from L550
to L586 was a real talking point and
similarly, like the tracked excavators
and dozers, no DPF or regeneration,
only SCR technology required.’
Darren Bennet, tracked excavator
product specialist, said: “There is strong
interest from the market in the tracked
excavators. Many commented on Liebherr’s simple approach to emission
control with models including the R
922 crawler excavator requiring no
DPF, regeneration or SCR and the larger
excavators requiring just SCR and no
additional technology.”
Fintan Lowney, General Manager
of concrete technology, added: “The
introduction of the new quick release
hatch on the truck mixers has been
incredibly well received at Hillhead
this year. There was also a great deal
of interest in the recently-launched
Mobilmix 2.5 batching plant.”

RINGING THE BELLS OF SUCCESS
Bell Equipment has announced that,
in spite of the weather, it enjoyed one of
its most successful Hillhead’s, making
significant sales and attracting a large
volume of visitors over the three day
show, where the company’s new B60E
was undoubtedly the star of the show.
The Staffordshire-based articulated
dump truck and wheel loader specialist
chose to use Hillhead 2016 as the UK stage
from which to launch the latest addition
to its E-series generation of trucks. With
organizers describing the show as ‘the
best Hillhead yet’, Bell Equipment was pre-
sented with an enthusiastic audience keen
to experience the ground-breaking B60E.
The B60E’s impressive design was inspired by Bell Equipment’s original B60D
concept vehicle; a machine which, back
in 2013, proved itself as an impressive
improvement to the rigid earthmovers
on the market at the time, and capable
of moving large volumes of material in
all weather conditions.
The B60E elevates the design and performance of the original B60D to the next
level. Described by Bell as ‘the next generation’, its 4x4 full articulation steering and
oscillation joint provides more off-road
capability than any other conventional
rigid truck, claims Bell Equipment, and its
Mercedes Benz engine offers the lowest
cost per tonne on the market, says the
manufacturer.
With its all wheel traction, tighter turning circle, and ability to negotiate steeper
ramps, the B60E delivers significant
advantages over rigid truck competition.
“Our E-series vehicles, particularly
the B60E, have been a huge show-stand
hit this year, with sales of both brand
new and reconditioned models being
secured during the exhibition,” explains
Nick Learoyd, Managing Director of Bell
Equipment.
“Customers have demonstrated enthusiasm for, and confidence in, our
machines, which, with the proven legacy
of our successful D-series behind them,
promise increased production payloads,
lower operating costs, uncompromised
safety, and a superior operator experience
within the plant environment.”
Nick goes on to explain how Bell also
showcased additional models from its
E-series alongside the B60E, including
the B25E, B30E, B40E, and B50E next
generation machines.

Haver & Boecker Launches New, Time-Saving Split-Bucket Mounting System
Haver & Boecker introduces it s Ty ler F-C la ss
Split-Bucket Mounting System, which offers simplified
maintenance and bearings
change outs for operators
and, in turn, cuts service
downtime in half, claims the
company. The rubber mount
housing, or split-bucket system, provides operators easy
access to critical components, such as rubber mounts
and body brackets.
All new Tyler F-Class Vibrating Screens feature the
upgraded mounting system,
which includes 16 rubber
mounts and 4 body brackets.
The split-bucket rubber
mount includes a two-piece
body bracket, which allows
operators to remove the side
arm and bucket in one piece.
Prior to t hese improvements, in order to remove
the side arm, technicians
were required to disconnect
the rubber mounts along
with removing 15 bolts. Now,
the process is simplified.
Technicians can remove the
side arm and split-buckets
off of the screen as a whole
assembly—reducing the
number of bolts removed
to eight.
Beyond the new
split-bucket mounting system, the F-Class includes
Haver & Boecker’s exclusive
four bearing Tyler design,
which allows for multiple

the right media choice, it virtually eliminates blinding

is designed to handle the

Sturtevant Whirlwind Air Classifier Installed in 1961 Is Still Making Sand & Aglime
A Sturtevant 3.66-metre
(12-foot) Whirlwind air classifier installed at Rockydale
Quarries in Roanoke, Virginia in 1961 is still making
agricultural lime and minus
1
/4-inch sand for asphalt production. The machine was
refurbished by Rockydale
with parts supplied by Sturtevant in 2015 after more
than 53 years of continuous
operation. The refurbishing
cost was 40% of the cost of a
completely new machine.
“We worked closely with
Sturtevant throughout the
refurbishing process,” says
Rockydale Vice President of
Operations Gary Hubbard.
“They tailored everything to
our needs. I just gave them
the requirements we needed to work within, and they
handled it with us from there.
“Sturtevant was able to
refurbish the air classifier
since the basic design hadn’t
changed much. Essential
parts such as the fans, distributors, and cones were
original. And all Whirlwind
parts are readily replaceable,
which eased the refurbishing
process. Most of the original
rotating parts did not need to
be replaced, including the
heavy-duty drive mechanism.
“Two key Sturtevant people
on the project were Senior
Project Manager for Air Classifiers Joe Muscolino and
Parts Manager Rick Fortini.
Both have been with Sturtevant for more than 30 years.
They worked in concert with
our Luis Lopez to make it all
go like clockwork.
Rockydale is a small, family
owned company,” Hubbard
says. “So is Sturtevant. That’s
one of the reasons we like
working with them. They’ll
go the extra mile to accommodate your needs and give
you the attention you won’t
always find with larger com-

to produce rip-rap, gabion,
3-inch-by-1-inch, 57s, 8s,
and 10s,” Hubbard says. “We
use the Sturtevant air classifiers exclusively to produce
agricultural lime and the
concrete and asphalt products. One circuit produces
70 tph; the other produces
50 tph. The classifiers have
no trouble keeping up with
that production rate.
“The feed material is dolomitic limestone with 4%
silica and no caustic chemicals, which keeps wear to a
minimum,” Hubbard says.
“Acceptable moisture content
averages 2% to 5%. Anything
higher slows production. The
two air classifiers are fed a
fine graded material and produce a very high quality sand.
To aid in moisture control,
the 3.66-metre (12-foot) is
enclosed and the 4.88-metre
(16-foot) has a covered feed
conveyor.”
Hubbard says the Sturtevant Whirlwinds are tough,
efficient, and simple to operate and maintain. “We do a
weekly inspection: just open
up the door to see how the
blades, tips, and distributor
plate look. There’s virtually
never a problem so we close
up and keep on producing.
Once the selector blades are
dialled in to match the gradation you want, the upkeep
on the unit is very simple.
Nevertheless, diligence in
maintenance and service are
still crucial. Ray St. Clair, who
has been with Rockydale for
39 years, has been a major
contributor to the care and
handling of our air classifiers.
We keep all our equipment
in good repair, and it pays
off in production efficiency
and long service life at minimum cost. Our Sturtevant
Whirlwinds are the prime
example.”

UNTIMED POWER BOOST:
STRENGTH ON YOUR SCHEDULE
We know what it’s like to sit in the operator’s seat when you hit solid rock.
The power boost button on most excavators can deliver the extra force you
need to break through – but only in short bursts. We knew there
had to be a better way, so we took our jobsite experience and
collaborated with our engineers. The result is an untimed
power boost that comes standard in all KOBELCO
conventional excavators from the SK210LC
to the SK500LC. It provides all the
extra muscle you need continuously
so you can power through the
toughest jobs without
interruption.
