Established in 1982 as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of
Environment and Forests, Government of India, IIFM was conceptualized in response to the recommendations of the National Commission on Agriculture.
The impetus generated by these recommendations culminated in an alliance with the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad through which the philosophy and raison d’être of IIFM was evolved. The Swedish International
Development Agency also contributed financially and technically in establishing the Institute. Since its inception, IIFM has been home to some of the most brilliant young minds who are constantly raising the bar of excellence in this dynamic field.

“To say the least, IIFM has played an integral role in shaping my career and has helped me in not only becoming a successful professional but more importantly a better person! A launching pad always critical for any successful career in social development, IIFM has helped immensely in providing me the required stepping stone. Apart from the technical and management aspects, few of the other attributes which IIFM has helped me to develop are leadership qualities, ability to work effectively with a wide range of personalities and to do multi-tasking effectively without getting stressed. These qualities have helped me to work successfully on senior/middle level management positions with organizations like UNICEF,International HIV/
AIDS Alliance and at present FANSA.I am proud to be an alumnus of this esteemed institute and would strongly recommend reputed organizations to go all out in recruiting
IIFM students as part of their campus recruitments !”
Siddhartha Das,
Regional Coordinator: South Asia, Freshwater Action Network
South Asia (Class of 2004)
“The PFM program offers a unique interdisciplinary perspective on environment and development that equips students with right blend of academic and practical skills to tackle challenges of sustainable and equitable growth. For me, IIFM opened gates for a rewarding professional career where I could use the rigorous training of the Institute to address vast range of real world issues ranging from strategy for deepening access to finance, market development for poor to promoting sustainable natural resource management and green growth. The strong emphasis of the program on case methodology, group work and an intense summer training builds-up strong analytical ability and team skills that are critical towards effective performance in an organization. My experience with the industry clearly demonstrates that graduates from IIFM can fit in diverse managerial role and contribute successfully in vast range of operational and institutional settings.”
Seyed Faiz ,

“IIFM is the first test bed in my life which taught me to see life from socio-commercial point of view. It gave me courage to explore new possibilities in unknown territories like
Bottom of Pyramid markets. It inspired me to create a niche and make a difference in the society. I feel privileged to be a part of such a prestigious institution which has guided me throughout my professional journey.”
Deepak Kumar Mitra,
Sr Business Manager (Rural and Emerging Market), Philips
Electronics India Ltd (Class of 2002)
“A decade after my class graduated from IIFM, I look back and feel that the most important attributes we gained from those two years were ‘humility’ and ‘adaptability’.
IIFM opened up a different side of the world to us and at a very early stage in our career we learnt (and in various instances, experienced firsthand), the impact of social and environmental issues on communities and their habitats.
The extensive field experience and the niche focus of the curriculum were instrumental in preparing us in diverse ways for the responsibilities and opportunities ahead.”
Shikha Kalra,
Director (Capital Markets), Rabobank International, London
(Class of 2003)
“IIFM has been the foundation on which I have built my career and an everlasting bond and some great friends.
The environs of the institute provided the solitude and companionship- at the same time- to learn, play and work in teams. The exposure that 18 months at the institute provided has guided me and helped me with my work over the last 19 years. It continues to be a space that I would like to go back to.”
Jayesh Bhatia,
Director, NR Management Consultants India Private Limited
(Class of 1994)
“Before coming to IIFM I was a regular student who was planning to do an MBA. IIFM exposed me to the development needs of the country. Field work was an eye opener that brought me closer to issues related to rural development and poverty. It also gave me the necessary knowledge and skills to work on these issues. This inspiration has stayed with me to date.”
