Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM), a premier national institute endowed with the mandate of integrating development and environment management into the corporate and industrial sectors, is progressively involved in generating world class professionals in this unique sector. The Post Graduate Diploma in Forestry Management (PGDFM) is a customised and updated course to meet the challenges and changing dynamics of market, society and the environment in the current scenario of globalisation and liberalisation. This flagship programme, since its inception, has been at the helm of developing the most vibrant and responsible managers, with knowledge and skills required for the holistic and “green” development of the country and the world.

The Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM) is a sectoral management institute which constantly endeavours to evolve knowledge useful for the managers in the areas of Development,

Environment, Natural Resource Management and allied sectors. It disseminates such knowledge to its students and clients in ways that promote its application by individuals and organizations.

It is a landmark year to be on campus as the PGDFM program of IIFM completes 25 years of excellence and commitment towards creating and nurturing ‘managers ready for tomorrow’ with leadership to fuel environmentally, economically and socially balanced growth wherever they go.

I welcome your esteemed organization to the placement process for the batch of 2012-14. The batch is diverse in terms of academic, professional and cultural backgrounds. The various sectors our students have made their mark in are conservation, consultancy, corporate social responsibility, development, ecotourism, environment, forestry, livelihood, microfinance and more. Our ever growing alumni base, spread over more than 100 organizations in myriad sectors around the country and abroad is testament to this fact.

In the evolving context of the current economic and development imperatives, a manager needs to be agile and respond to the diverse challenges being faced by organizations. We at IIFM acknowledge this, and the PGDFM programme is designed to develop bright, talented youth into well groomed professionals who can steer organizations through new challenges. Our pedagogy aims to build the students’ capacity to understand concepts and their practical implications through summer internships, field work, academic depth, and an emphasis on developing holistic and creative thinking.

the sPire of sustenance

The wind wheel of the Greek engineer Heron of Alexandria in the first century AD is the earliest known instance of using a wind-driven wheel to power a machine.

IIFM is unique in the way it imparts education with a view to develop individuals who will be committed towards an environmentally aware society through achieving higher sustainability of the planet and balancing different industrial sectors.

Established in 1982 as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of

Environment and Forests, Government of India, IIFM was conceptualized in response to the recommendations of the National Commission on Agriculture.

The impetus generated by these recommendations culminated in an alliance with the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad through which the philosophy and raison d’être of IIFM was evolved. The Swedish International

Development Agency also contributed financially and technically in establishing the Institute. Since its inception, IIFM has been home to some of the most brilliant young minds who are constantly raising the bar of excellence in this dynamic field.

Each batch is selected through an extremely stringent selection process, consisting of several filters to get the best minds in the country. The present batch has been selected from a pool of top scorers in CAT who appeared for group discussions and personal interviews.

IIFM believes in the importance of giving its students extensive practical exposure alongside invaluable academic inputs to ensure their holistic development.

This ensures a perfect mix of business acumen and academic intellect.

Such exposure is provided by means of Summer Internship, Field

Visits, Industry Visits, Guest Lectures, and Live Projects. A ten week compulsory Summer Internship provides an opportunity for students to apply academic knowledge to real time management problems.

15-day-long field trips are conducted twice during the programme to provide hands-on experience. Guest lectures provide students with a chance to interact with representatives of the corporate world and learn about latest management practices.

The multi disciplinary expertise of IIFM’s faculty makes IIFM ideally suited to offer consultancy services in the areas of

Forestry, Environment and Natural Resource Management.

The subject areas in which IIFM has been providing consultancy support include Agro-forestry, Farm forestry,

CentreS of exCellenCe

The Institute has a Regional Centre for National Afforestation

& Eco-development Board (RCNAEB) as a regional support unit for greening the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. An International Centre for Community Forestry

(ICCF) has been set up at IIFM to promote Sustainable

Forest Management with community participation through research, training and documentation. It has also established other centres such as Centre for Sustainable

Forest Management and Forest Certification, Centre for

Management of Eco System Services and Centre for Livelihood

Management.

The earliest description of gears was written in the 4th century B.C. by Aristotle. The industrial revolution in Britain in the eighteenth century saw an explosion in the use of metal gearing.

Facilities at IIFM ensure that students overcome every obstacle that comes in the way of their development as efficient and righteous managers of the future.

CampuS

The Institute has a sprawling campus spread over 230 acres located on a lush green hill-top surrounded by water-bodies on three sides. The building complex includes the Academic Complex, Library, Computer Centre, Hostel,

Mess, and the Administration and Accounts wings. The Academic Complex of

IIFM includes class rooms, seminar rooms equipped with video conferencing facilities and faculty block. The award winning architectural design of

IIFM’s building provides an environment conducive for academic activities, professional deliberations and social interaction.

Computer Centre

The Computer Centre has hardware and software resources that are capable of providing support for diverse computing requirements. It has a number of computers in Local Area Network (LAN), Internet connectivity and has state of the art Geographic Information System (GIS) and image processing facilities.

Computing support is provided to students twenty four hours a day.

library and information ServiCeS

IIFM library is an ocean of knowledge and information with a vast collection of books and journals on subjects of environment, development, forestry and beyond. This multi-storied air conditioned building offers a vast pool of literature to students. Subscription to a number of international e-journals is a key ingredient of the IIFM library. Institutional membership with DELNET & MANLiBNET as well as continuous updating of resource base and inclusion of publications of current interest is constantly undertaken.

A collection of films on forestry, environment, development, livelihood and management are available. The Online Public

Access Catalogue (OPAC) facility is available on all terminals connected through LAN. IIFM has more than 39,000 books and subscription to more than 220 National and International periodicals, a number of CDs and DVD’s on various topics of academic interests, and subscription to a number of International online databases such as JSTOR, Prowess, J-gate (Social and Management Sciences), EBSCO (Business Source Elite and Environment Complete), Science Direct, Business Management and Accounting, Environmental Science and Indiastat. hoStel, gueSt houSe & meSS

Three hostel blocks having one hundred and ten fully furnished rooms in total are available for accomodating boys and girls separately. The hostel rooms are connected with Internet facility through LAN and Wi-Fi. The Mess is equipped with automated and semi-automated equipment and cooking systems. It is capable of serving about 300 people at a time with nutritious and wholesome food.

SportS faCilitieS

A wide range of sports facilities are available on campus including Badminton, Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, Cricket, Football,

Volleyball, Basketball, Carrom, Chess and Gym. Intra institute sports tournament are organized regularly and the Institute participates every year in the All India Forest Sports and Games Meet organized by MoEF, GOI. Here at IIFM, every goal scored is cheered, every run scored is applauded and every point won calls for a celebration.

PgDfM

PGDFM is the flagship course of IIFM. The two year, six terms, fully residential programme comprises of foundation segment with four terms covering fundamental courses on management, forestry, environment and development.

Management (DM) is offered for the remaining two terms.

The PGDFM programme also offers the option to pursue dual specialization.

PeDagogy

IIFM provides its students opportunities for classroom learning using methods like case analysis and conceptual discussions based on the same, along with review of literature on various topics given as assignments and presentations. These methods induce self-study and group work among the students which enhance the interpersonal skills and inculcate the spirit of team work.

field worK

Two field visits for a duration of 15 days each is an integral part of the PGDFM program. It involves visits to national parks, villages, plantations, co-operatives, NGOs, PSUs, industries and various development project sites usually covering three or more states.

Summer internShip

A ten week compulsory summer internship program with various organizations ranging from financial institutions, forest based organizations, development organizations,

NGOs, government organizations and MNCs, provides opportunities for the students to apply academic knowledge to real time managerial problem situations.

CaSe analySiS

Wisdom cannot be told. This is the reason why a large amount of the pedagogy involves case-related discussions and analysis. These are supplemented with guest lectures, seminars, group exercises, field visits and industrial visits.

The application of theoretical concepts to real life situation ensures that classroom teaching does not turn into a monologue and greater learning is engendered through participatory problem solving and consensus building.

To make the learning experience self-motivated, professors play the role of facilitators by providing a foundation for discussion and leaving the ground open for students’ research through self-study and presentations. This specialization brings knowledge and sensitivity among its students towards the management of human and social dimensions of forest conservation.

Almost from the invention of the telescope in the 17th century the advantages of mounting two of them side by side for binocular vision seems to have been explored.

Most powerful modern day binoculars have up to 160 times zoom magnification.

A 360 degree outlook towards balancing the ecology, economy and society is an important part of life at IIFM. Here the students capture important elements of life through the activities of all clubs and cells.

Management is beyond classrooms and curriculum. By providing umpteen opportunities to its students, IIFM has helped them to unearth and explore their concealed competencies. The Students’

Activities are carried on in the form of various Club and Cell events.

IIFM remains abuzz with activities starting from the Independence

Day till its annual cultural event -KALPATARU. These instill a sense of confidence and self reliance and help in honing interpersonal skills and leadership as well as encouraging team work.

SportS Club

Sports Club strives to promote physical and mental wellbeing through an appreciation of stress, rest and relaxation among IIFMites. It encourages student-faculty interaction outside classrooms through various sports events on

Teacher’s day and during Kalpataru. It also provides an opportunity for students to represent the institute at national level tournaments like All India Forest Meet exposing them to a bigger platform.

Cultural Club

The Cultural Club aims to create a home away from home for all the students who are a part of the IIFM family. Right from celebrating Independence Day with heart touching patriotic performances to the New year celebration, the cultural club celebrates all national and religious festivals with zest and vigour. literary Club

The members of literary club organize activities such as foreign language classes, quizzes, wordplay, panel discussions, etc. for the students. The club also supports and encourages students to participate in national level events of literary relevance. The mandate of the club is to create an intellectually stimulating environment at the campus that everyone can enjoy and learn from.

movie Club

Movie Club primarily screens movies and documentaries that students can watch for entertainment, information and relaxation. This is done through various events and activities like Movie Marathons, Open Theatre, Documentaries Series,

Quizzes, Movie Review Competitions and Movie Excursion.

nature Club

The Nature Club is a group of Nature lovers who believe in taking initiatives towards pitching conservation efforts at societal level, in the interest of environment. It tries to imbibe love for nature into the lives of all students through flagship activities like cleanliness drives and plantation drives along with other activities like photography competitions, bird watching camps, star gazing, night trekking, nature quizzes, t-shirt painting and live sketching competition.

adventure Club

The Adventure Club amalgamates the thrill of adventure and love of nature. The members of this club work towards building team management and leadership skills through various activities including river crossing, trekking, rappelling etc. The club also strives to contribute back to the society by partnering with community based ecotourism activities.

meSS Committee

The Mess Committee at IIFM is completely a student-run body and a new committee is formed for every term. The task of managing the finances, payments to the mess staff, conducting market research to get the best price for commodities, making varied menus, organizing special dinners during festivities etc. give an insight to the students about how to run a small entity like a mess.

This committee facilitates interaction amongst alumni and current students through social networking websites, our

IIFM alumni website, campus visits, and chapter meets in various cities. Alumni Talk Series helps present students realise their dreams of bright futures like those of our alumni, and helps alumni relive a golden period of their lives, connecting the dots backwards.

enviroConClave

The Climate Change and Environmental Core Competency Cell (C2EC3) provides exposure to different aspects of environment and allied domains. The annual flagship event of C2EC3 is the EnviroConclave which is a national level conference.

Professionals are invited from the industry as well as the academia to share their knowledge and experience in the respective fields based on the theme of the year. The event typically involves sessions by speakers, panel discussion and workshops on environment related themes like ‘climate change and biodiversity’ and ‘reclamation, remediation and restoration of ecosystems’. All throughout the year, the cell also organizes interactive sessions with people who have carved a niche in the field of environment.

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell was inducted in the Students and Alumni Affairs Council of IIFM in 2009. The mega event of the cell is the Entrepreneurship Summit called ‘Daksh’ and a national level B-plan competition to facilitate young minds towards innovative development initiatives focusing on themes like ‘fostering innovation’, ‘empowering people’ and ‘skill development : nurturing, equipping and engaging’. Apart from this mega event, the cell has strong links with the alumni who have ventured into entrepreneurship so that the interested students can get guidance and motivation from them. EDC also conducts workshops on building the entrepreneurial skills of the first generation entrepreneurs.

CSr india ConClave

Recognizing need of corporate social responsibility in corporate governance and the importance of corporates in development activities, the Communication Cell hosts annual one day national level conclave, ‘CSR India Conclave’. The conclave attracts participation of CSR heads from PSU’s, representatives from consultancy firms, MNC’s, NGO’s, research organizations and educational institutions. The previous participants in CSR India Conclave were E&Y, Mary Stopes International, LIC, INTEL, TERI,

Dr. Reddy’s Foundation, Citi Bank, Jindal Steel to name a few. The conclave also includes a Strategic CSR Model Competition which generates participation from students from premier B-schools. Other activities of the cell include publishing annual magazine ‘Communique’, networking with different B-schools and maintaining media interactions.

PlaceMent guiDelines

1. Organizations are invited to participate in the campus recruitment process and are requested to intimate their participation through the Placement Participation Form attached with this brochure.

5. The organization is requested not to communicate the offer to the candidate directly. A job offer must specify:

a) Position offered

b) Remuneration

2. The organization is required to communicate the detailed process requirements (number of selection rounds, panels, and process specific requirements) prior to the

Placement process.

c) Job description

6. The representatives of the organization should have the authority to make the final job offers immediately after the interviews.

3. The organization is expected to deliver a Pre-Placement talk (PPT) prior to the Final Placement Process. This would provide an opportunity for both students and the organization to know each other better and clarify the doubts.

7. The Institute shall host the representatives of the participating organizations and provide all necessary assistance to make their stay comfortable.

4. To make a job offer, the organization representative will have to fill-up the job offer form that will be made available on campus. An offer is considered valid only when this form, duly filled in by the representative, is handed over to the Placement Chairperson of the

Institute.
