The Gift of Opportunity
“The name Foxcroft Academy makes me think of lots of fun and
teachers who really care about students. Before coming to
Foxcroft Academy, I had never seen teachers with as much
passion and joy in teaching students. I appreciated all the
learning opportunities this school offered me and no matter
where I travel in the world I can proudly say I graduated from
Foxcroft Academy. It will always remain a special place for me.”
Myo Chan Kim ’07
Gonzaga University, Washington
Over the last three years Foxcroft Academy has added
22 new course offerings for students including such courses
as Orchestra/Chamber Ensemble, AP Statistics, Physics II,
Home Engineering, Art History and Economics. With tuition
dollars only paying for a portion of a student’s education at
Foxcroft Academy, our charitable contributions are helping to
create new opportunities for our day and boarding students.

A PUBLIC ATION OF FOXCROFT AC ADEMY for ALUMNI & FRIENDS
Is a Gift Annuity Right for You?
Dear Foxcroft Alumni & Friends,
A
My challenge, and the challenge for most heads-of-school, is to find the balance between providing leadership in the day-to-day life of the school and the duty to plan for the future of the school
in such a way as to ensure its long term health and vitality. Successful schools, like meaningful mission
statements, adapt to both a changing institutional environment as well as new demands placed on
our students by the world they will be entering.
As many of you are aware, the current structure of public education in Maine is in flux. The
instability is largely driven by state budgetary pressures and a philosophy that school consolidation
will relieve this pressure as it reduces administrative costs by combining existing school districts
and setting aside some elements of local control. By state mandate, tentative reorganization plans—
in many cases multiple proposals by a single district-- have been submitted to the Department of
Education by all existing public school units. However, the details remain unpublished as does a
final configuration that will garner public support and meet state goals. Inevitably, this will impact
independent schools such as Foxcroft as districts are re-defined and the historic partnership between
a Town Academy and its sending towns may be drastically altered and potentially placed in jeopardy.
Through the Maine Association of Independent Schools and our own direct efforts, the Academy
has made the Department of Education and all local school superintendents aware of our willingness
to be part of a solution that will permit us to continue educating the students of our communities.
Given the instability in public education and the demographic and economic challenges that
confront this region, our future will be increasingly tied to our ability to attract families to our
school community; particularly families who can choose the school that will be the best fit for
their students. This will mean that we should do all in our power to encourage continued school
choice for parents that is meaningful, flexible and underpinned by a commitment to educational
dollars that are tied primarily to the student and his or her family’s decision. I can think of no
stronger antidote to a potentially over-centralized educational system than to strengthen a family’s
voice in the selection of a school for their children.
I am confident that Foxcroft Academy will continue to offer a high quality education to the
youth of the region and through its continued independence preserve the flexibility it needs to
create, implement and deliver an education that will prepare a wide range of students for success
in life. Like all valuable things in life, its continuance and preservation will take work on the part of
the school to continually improve its educational programs; and will require that we remain
responsive to the needs and concerns of families and alumni who remain our most valuable
advocates. Such advocacy is particularly important at this juncture in the educational debate in
Maine and I encourage all our alumni and friends to make their voice heard in this debate.
Finally, let me extend an open invitation to all of you to come to campus for a visit and to reacquaint yourself with the Academy if it has been some time since your last visit. We are excited
about the evolution of our programs, proud of our connections to the community and energized by
the growth and vitality of our boarding program.
Sincerely,
Raymond P. Webb Ph.D.

Ê
s I enter my second year as Head of School at Foxcroft Academy, I am reminded
of both the rich place of the Academy in the history of the State and the challenges that lie ahead as we work to secure the Academy’s future and preserve its role in
preparing our students to be informed citizens and leaders in their communities and
chosen professions. For many of our readers, their time at the Academy was pivotal to
preparing them for success in life—regardless of the generation or decade in which they
walked the halls of Academy. This commitment is reflected in our Mission Statement
and encapsulates much of what guides both the day-to-day operations of the school and our longterm planning.
Founded in 1823, Foxcroft Academy is an independent secondary school offering comprehensive
college preparatory courses, technical education programs, and support services for day and
boarding students. The school is committed to developing responsible and informed citizens,
critical thinkers, and collaborative leaders. Foxcroft Academy is a community promoting the
development of integrity, character, and skills necessary for life-long learning.

ANNUAL FUND
Report of
Charitable Giving
July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007
Dear Friends,
On behalf of Foxcroft Academy’s Board of Trustees, I want to thank parents, faculty and staff members, community and
alumni, as well as our Trustees, for your participation in this year’s Annual Fund. Your gift shows an understanding
of the challenges inherent in funding independent school education as we work to bridge the gap between tuition
revenue and the true cost of an FA education.
Our goal to raise $75,000 in unrestricted funds in support of the instructional budget came up just a little bit short;
however, total charitable giving amounted to over $383,000 in cash and in-kind gifts (denoted with *). These charitable
gifts support specific academic, athletic and scholarhip programs as well as our endowment. Again, thank you for
your generosity to Foxcroft Academy.

fun than a teacher should be allowed to
have. For that, I need to thank some folks.
The faculty and staff made me feel
welcome right from day one. When I emerged
from retirement for the second time, they
made me feel like I had never left. There
are many here who knew me from earlier
times, but they hired me on anyway.
And students I had known from classes
two years ago-Renee, Adam, Courtney,
Amelia, to mention just a few; you others
know who you are-always brightened my
day with a smile and a friendly greeting, and
had the good grace to laugh at my jokes.
Mostly, though, this was a great year
because of the students I taught in ESL.
I thank them for their courtesy, their
patience, and their good humor. I will
always remember them, and will hold them
in highest regard. Great is my admiration
and respect for them.
No one who hasn’t done so can even
begin to understand how difficult it is to
move into an alien culture, thousands of
miles from home and family and away from
familiar sights and sounds, expected to
work and learn in a language not their own.
It takes a special kind of courage even to
take on such a challenge, let alone to hold
oneself to high standards of performance
while doing so. But that is just what these
students have done and have done with
style and grace. It speaks well of their
families, their good character, and their
impressive work ethic. I salute them for what
they have accomplished already in life.
My life has been enriched by our
boarding students.
This is my charge to the rest of you.
Your life will be enriched, too, if you will
reach out to greet and get to know the
unfamiliar faces who come into your school
and into your life. This can be a challenge, I
know. We Maine people don’t like to push
ourselves forward, to make the first move
toward creating a friendship. We tend to
A Chargetudent
to the S
Body

hang back, to be a bit stand-offish with
strangers, to let relationships develop
more or less naturally, or by chance.
But sometimes it is necessary to take
the initiative yourself. “Breaking the ice”
need not be an earth-shaking event. Start
with a baby step: a smile, a greeting, a
compliment, a seat at the lunchroom table.
Offer a ride, help with a homework problem;
ask a question; share your popcorn. The
first thing you know, you are having a
conversation. Now you have an acquaintance, and, soon, a friend. And as we all
know, no one can have too many friends.
This poem by Spencer Free sums it up
nicely. Stay well. Look after each other.
Be a friend.
Day and boarding students participating in International
Food Night.
“
Tis the human touch in this world that counts,
The touch of your hand and mine,
Which means far more to the fainting heart
Than shelter and bread and wine;
For shelter is gone when the night is o’er,
And bread lasts only a day,
But the touch of the hand and the sound of the voice
Sing on in the soul always.

Gifts to the Howard F. Ryder Endowed
Fellowship for Advanced Study
In November of 2006, former Headmaster of Foxcroft
Academy Howard Ryder passed away. While many of us knew
Mr. Ryder only as the Headmaster at Foxcroft Academy, his
role in education spanned over thirty years and took him to
leadership positions at both the state and national levels.
Throughout his career, he never lost sight of the fact that
schools were all about the “kids.” He instilled his passion and
love for young people in his faculty members, working to help
them become the best classroom teachers possible for the sake of the “kids.”
The following people have generously given to the endowed fund in his memory
which will make an annual award to a faculty member at Foxcroft Academy
(The Howard F. Ryder Award) which will be used towards professional development or enhancing classroom materials, enabling them to better serve students.
The fund has topped the $6,000 mark with a goal of $10,000. Thank you to the
following who chose to remember “Howie” in this way.

From Cicero and Greek Composit
An Expanding Curriculum Ser
In 1886,
sixty-three years after its founding, Foxcroft Academy
students could choose from among 28 courses in
the curriculum including those such as Greek Composition, Cicero, and
Moral Philosophy. By 1957 students had 43 courses to choose from
including Mathematics for Nurses, Latin, Stenography and Chemistry.
In 2001, Foxcroft Academy was offering its students 113 course selections in a college preparatory and technology education curriculum,
including 24 Honors Courses and 5 Advanced Placement Courses.
The Academy’s historic commitment to serve students and
families with academic programs that prepare all of its students for
studies beyond Foxcroft as well as the “great duties of life” has led to
more recent and new learning opportunities for students.
Over the last few years, the Academy’s academic program has
grown to 135 course offerings, expanding by 22 courses to include
such courses as Pottery, Art History, Home Engineering, Orchestra
and Chamber Ensemble, ESL I and II, ESL Writing, Piano, Economics,
AP Statistics, Ethics, Web Development and Internet Technologies
and Physics II.
Foxcroft Academy is proud of its ability as a small independent
school to meet the dynamic academic needs and interests of both its day
and boarding students. In 2008, Academy students will choose from
among 137 course offerings including 32 Honors Courses and 8 AP Courses.
Physics II is a segue to 2008 AP Physics and designed to
prepare students for the College Board exam. The course expands
the study of motion and energy, particularly in the areas of
electricity and magnetism. It is designed for students with an
interest in pursuing studies in engineering and related fields.
Mrs. Dorothy Brennan – Physics Instructor

The
1967 Girls’ Championship basketball team was
honored at the Lawn Party on Friday, August 3rd,
marking the beginning of another eventful Alumni Weekend. This is
what was supposed to happen, only it didn’t. For the first time ever
the Lawn Party was rained out. Instead the team was presented with
their championship banner at the Alumni Banquet on Saturday night.
Most of the team was there and were thrilled to be presented with
T-shirts by Coach Susan Stitham commemorating their championship.
A record number of attendees were at the Banquet this year,
including many attendees from the Classes of 1967, 1977, and 1987.
Over 300 people enjoyed the catered meal of prime rib,
lobster/seafood newburg, and various other delicious entrees.
Honored this year was Jim Robinson ’59, who received the
Dr. Mary Chandler-Lowell Award, which is given to an alumnus
who has distinguished him/herself in their chosen profession. Jim
had over 17 family and friends present to see him proudly accept
this award.
Mrs. Constance MacPherson was the recipient of the Tillson D.
Thomas Award, given to a former faculty member in recognition of
their professional service to Foxcroft Academy and her students. Her
daughter Ms. Dawn MacPherson-Allen was on hand to accept on her
mother’s behalf.
The James S. Holmes Award is given to a outstanding
community member or organization who through his/their service
has furthered the mission and goals of Foxcroft Academy.
Moosehead Manufacturing Co.’s commitment as an extended
member of our community has enabled students at Foxcroft
Academy to have the very best educational environment.

The 70th reunion of the Class of 1937
The 70th reunion of the Class of 1937 was celebrated by three
members who were in attendance at the Alumni Banquet. Priscilla
Cheney Easler, Harold Blood and Martha Green Rollins were seated
at the Head Table and introduced, were applauded, and had a great
time! The class is saddened by the passing of classmate and former
FA faculty member Virginia Weston Bradford this past September.
More info will follow in the spring 2008 issue of the Foxcroft.
Class of ’99 Reunion in . . . Kyrgyzstan?
Two FA alumni attended the Class of ’99 reunion held in Kyrgyzstan,
Central Asia. In June 2007, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (Africa
’04 - ’06) Maya Moore traveled to Manas Village, Kyrgyzstan, to visit
Tana Manchester, who is a current Peace Corps Volunteer serving
there since 2005. The reunion lasted 2 1/2 weeks during which time
the FA grads explored the capital city of Bishkek, took a 10-hour taxi
ride over three mountain passes to reach the southern city of
Jalalabad, and climbed one of the peaks in the majestic Tien Shan
mountain range. A variety of local delicacies were served, Maya
gushing about the sheep liver while Tana slept in a yurt (traditional
nomadic dwelling) and shared meals with the Kyrgyz family that was
spending the summer there with their herds of sheep and goats. They
thoroughly enjoyed the chance to reminisce while also experiencing,
as Maya put it, “the strangest out of 20 countries she has visited.
Class of 1977 Enjoys 30th Reunion
Reunion weekend for the Class of ’77 started with a gathering at
the fairgrounds to get their float ready for the parade. Even though
they had a little rain (liquid sunshine) a few of them gathered for a
evening full of laughter. This continued onto Saturday morning.
A number of classmates turned out for the Alumni Banquet on
Saturday night, followed by a class gathering at the fairgrounds for
more updates and conversations.
