About us
Automation is our world.
A perfect application
solution is our goal.
A willingness to take entrepreneurial risks, a pioneering spirit,
and a firm belief in their own inventive powers – these were
the assets that Walter Pepperl and Ludwig Fuchs started out
with when they opened their Mannheim radio repair shop in
1945. Their invention of the proximity switch a few years later
proved their strength. It was also the starting point in a successful history defined by close customer relationships as well
as innovative automation technologies and procedures.
Then as now, our focus is directed squarely on the individual
requirements of each customer. Whether as a pioneer in electrical explosion protection, or as a leading innovator of highly
efficient sensors – the close communication with our custom-
2
ers is what allowed us to become the leader in automation
technology. Our main objective is combining state-of-the-art
technologies and comprehensive services to optimize our
customers’ processes and applications.

processes and procedures and know their industries and requirements down to the last detail. We provide creative ideas
and fresh impetus, preparing you for future tasks in ever more
competitive markets. We oversee each project with a great
deal of care and commitment, from the initial consultation to
the commissioning stage and downstream support.
4
We make no compromises when it comes to quality, safety,
and reliability. Only by applying the highest standards can
we ensure that we are able to provide your processes with
reliable protection. By applying this philosophy and by providing top-quality engineering, we set global benchmarks for
technologies in the area of explosion protection. And we do
so time and time again.
The Explosion
Protection Types
Explosion protection can be achieved in various ways. It depends
on factors including the type of facility and system and the
physical preconditions. This section explains four processes used
in electrical explosion protection equipment and solutions from
Pepperl+Fuchs.
Ex i – intrinsic safety
Ex d – flameproof enclosure
The traditional electronic explosion protection. The supply to
the electrical equipment is fed through a safety barrier that
limits the current and voltage so that the minimum ignition
energy and ignition temperature of an explosive mixture are
not reached.
Switching equipment and controls are installed in a flameproof
enclosure to ensure that possible sparks cannot escape. The
components that could trigger ignition are built into an enclosure that will withstand the pressure of an explosion. The openings of the enclosure are designed and constructed to prevent
the explosion from escaping the enclosure.
Ex e – increased safety
Ex p – pressurized enclosure
Mechanical support for explosion protection in the form of appropriate protective enclosures and mechanical protection
for clamps, screens and electrical components. The occurrence
of sparks and impermissible temperatures that could act as
a source of ignition is prevented through additional mechanical protective measures.
Switching equipment and controls are installed in an enclosure
that is constantly kept under slight overpressure with nitrogen
or a nonexplosive gas to prevent penetration by flammable
gases. The equipment enclosure is filled with an inert gas and
an explosive gas mixture can’t get to the possible sources of
ignition that are arranged on the inside of the enclosure.
Electrical explosion protection by Pepperl+Fuchs offers products and solutions
according to various international standards such as:

DMT 2B
DMT 2C
DMT – Electronic Earthing Systems
The DMT electronic earthing devices are designed to monitor
the capacitance and resistance of equipment where a build-up
of static charges can occur within hazardous locations. They
feature a clamp fitted to 8 meters of cable in order to mea-
sure and monitor the continuity to earth, aiming to eliminate
the electrostatic charges while delivery vehicles transfer
combustible products in tank farms, storage areas, or mixing
stations.

Flanged Ex de control panel

Engineered Ex d safety control system
Ex e Increased Safety, Ex d Flameproof,
Ex p Purge and Pressurization
There are various options to protect electrical devices and automation components in hazardous areas as well as harsh environments. A pharmaceutical production plant poses different
demands for device protection than an off shore drilling rig
in arctic waters. Many international, regional, and companyinternal safety regulations have to be observed. From single
Ex e control units through complex Ex e or Ex d control stations
up to sophisticated Ex de control and distribution panels or
Ex p systems, the vast variety of components certified to
all appropriate types of explosion protection allows solution
designs to meet any requirement of virtually all applications
in processing industries. Combining electrical components
not certified for use in hazardous areas with operating and
monitoring elements to fully certified solutions, either in Ex d
or Ex p, requires fundamental knowledge in explosion protec-
tion and long years of experience with production plants. The
teams of project engineers and technicians, located all over
the world in the Pepperl+Fuchs Solution Engineering Centers,
command all the necessary skills to achieve the best solutions
for the user’s specific application.
With the Pepperl+Fuchs brand GOVAN, we provide a complete
range of explosion protection equipment and customized
solutions to support customers throughout the Australian, South
East Asian, and Middle East markets. All products and solutions are manufactured in the dedicated 4000 m² facility in
Melbourne. This Solution Engineering Center is an approved
manufacturing facility for many major end users in these
regions.

Engineering – Tailor-made Solutions
Application, Customer Inquiry,
Specification
Design, Documentation,
Certification
Automated production plants have to run as efficiently as possible
with minimum operation costs and the best possible return on
investment. In order to find the most efficient protection solution
for the specific requirements in the maze of regulations and
types of protection, from the first consultation through to delivery
and commissioning, experts in the Pepperl+Fuchs Solution
Engineering Centers will advance the solution project. Based
on the specific environmental situation, production process
requirements, and relevant safety regulations, the project specification will be detailed and solution design options evaluated
in close contact with the user. The precise specification and the
customer’s final design decision form the basis for a stringent
project course and the optimal solution delivered on time.
Experienced engineers will detail the design, select the appropriate installation and operating elements from the vast choice
of Pepperl+Fuchs Ex d, Ex e, and Ex p product ranges, and
procure further components as per specification. All components
will be fully documented within the solution, which finally will
hold certifications to all relevant standards. Certifications and
system documentation will come in the appropriate format for
easy integration into the plant documentation system.

Engineering – Tailor-made Solutions
Manufacture, Acceptance,
Shipment
Skilled technicians specifically trained in the Solution Engineering
Centers will install all components in the appropriately specified enclosures. Subsequently, the project team will support the
customer in conducting the factory acceptance test to ensure
the solution will fulfill the specifi ed function in the plant. After
acceptance, the solution will be crated appropriately to the
means of transportation so a fully functional system will arrive
at the plant site, ready for quick installation and commissioning.
