T r i n i t y C o m m u n i c at o r October 2016 Things After watching Poverty Inc., many have asked for insight into best practices for helping the poor. to Know: Poverty, Inc.—What Now? Over the next few months we’ll be offering practical tips for helping those living in poverty and for partnering with ministries. This month we are exploring what our community offers to the homeless—namely, “ What should I do concerning panhandlers?” Mel Trotter Ministries Executive Director, Dennis VanKampen said people who donate to panhandlers individually should be aware that more long-term good can be done by supporting local charities. “First of all, follow your heart; if you are led to give, then give — just do so with eyes wide open and recognize you are probably not helping the individual do much except perhaps feed an addiction or continue their current lifestyle,” VanKampen said during the live chat. “If you want to help support an organization that helps those that want to change their lives, change them one person at a time.” (mlive.com) Church Office Hours Tues-Fri, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Announcements Bulletin and verbal announcements need to be sent to the office by Wednesday Activities To plan a church activity or meeting, please contact the There are safe, clean shelters in Grand Rapids all with programs that help alleviate poverty and office in order to avoid any homelessness. Here’s a little about me. Growing up in Southern California, I spent many winters grilling out at the park and playing basketball, copying the moves of a certain Michigan native and LA Laker legend. Weekends were spent helping my mom with her real estate work or with my dad watching sports or going shopping. I didn’t grow up in a Christian family and my parents divorced when I was 15. In 11 th grade, my mother brought me to church. I came to see that whatever sin my father committed against our family by leaving us, my sin against God was far worse, and that I needed a savor for my sin. And I came to see and believe that savior is of course, Jesus Christ. School and work has brought me to all parts of the country. For college, I went to the University of California at Davis to study clinical nutrition, then went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to get a master’s degree in public health. I then moved to Washington, DC, where I lived for the next 12 years and worked in health policy for various organizations. About 10 years ago, I started reading books on biblical counseling. By nature, I’m an application and action oriented guy and the way authors like Paul Tripp and Ed Welch spoke of connecting doctrine and theology with real life resonated. Slowly but surely, through many conversations with my pastors, training, and conferences, I decided to enroll part time at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. After further thought and counsel, towards the end of seminary, I transitioned from a career in health policy into ministry. While I’ve never been married and have no children, I’ve had the privilege of calling over 20 different Christian brothers my roommates. Those roommates have come from various walks of life, cultures, and personalities, leading to numerous experiences - some hilarious, others challenging, but always edifying. That edification hasn’t come from merely going along to get along, but from regular times of household prayer and fellowship, Bible study, and hospitality – all of which I hope to continue here in Grand Rapids! There’s a chance we have similar hobbies. I enjoy following the NBA, watching Downton Abbey, partaking in the performing arts, listening to Bach and Handel, enjoying nature, and travelling. So if you ever want to catch a game together, go to a show or symphony or a movie, let me know! And don’t hesitate to stop and say hello. I look forward to being a part of what the Lord has been and hopefully will continue to do here at Trinity Baptist! Puppet House—Oct 31 at December 5 Christmas Craft Night for ladies at Trinity. Fall Classes Oasis (formerly College & Career class), Facilitated by Mike & Sarah Dickinson Meets the 1st and 3rd Sunday every month following the morning service Come for dinner, stay to study God’s Word. Legacy Class—multi-age , Facilitated by Dave Branon What Do We Know about Heaven? You don’t need to experience a near-death experience to know that heaven is for real. Everything God wants us to know about heaven has been revealed in the many references to it in the Bible. In fact, heaven is mentioned more than 400 times in Scripture. The Legacy class will search God’s Word to see what we can know for sure about the place those who are redeemed will spend eternity. Life Builders (formerly Home Builders) multi-age, Facilitated by Steve DeMan Biblical Manhood & Womanhood Join us for this 13-week module as we examine: What does it mean to be a man? What does it mean to be a woman? At one level, gender differences are basic to our humanity. The procreation of the human race depends on sexual distinction. A man has one type of body; a woman has another. These facts of life were unquestioned for generations. These days, though, many people doubt the very idea of gender as given. As Christians, it’s our task to understand the issue of gender and men’s and women’s roles in the same way we answer the rest of life’s central questions: we look to God’s Word. Logos - multi-age, Facilitated by Don Vogel Meeting With God The goal of the Meeting with God 5-week module is to give you a Biblical understanding of why we should meet with God on a daily basis and to equip you with practical tools that will help you do just that. Another short-term module will be offered at the conclusion of Meeting With God. His-Story - multi-age, Facilitated by John & Beth Van Tongeren The Bible - Genesis through Revelation This class is designed for people who desire to study the Bible (His Story) for the first time as well as those who may not study regularly. Just as the Bible hangs together as a single narrative, these classes all fit together. We encourage you to commit with us to walk through the Bible as a whole. This is an opportunity to slow down, take our time, and dive into God’s Word. To see the Bible as God intended: One Story – His story. May we be convicted, instructed, and refreshed. Sword & Trowel Class - multi-age, Facilitated by Chris Haven Isaiah Isaiah is perhaps the prophet who most fully saw the glory of Jesus from afar (John 12:41). His book contains some of the most beloved and beautiful passages in all of literature. Isaiah’s big picture message can be stated simply as God’s transformation of the corrupted old creation order into the restored new creation order. Isaiah’s expansive vision remarkably reveals God’s plan to redeem not just a faithful remnant within Israel, but also a remnant of believers from the nations (like us!). As a result, Isaiah has much to say to us about how we should think and live in light of our allegiance to our God. Join us each week as we soak in the richness of this amazing book.
