PERRY IN THE HIGH SCHOOL MAIN OFFICE BETWEEN 8AM—3:00PM Attendance The importance of regular attendance cannot be overemphasized. Studies have clearly demonstrated that there is a positive correlation between good school attendance and academic success. Classroom instruction is the most important activity at Barrington High School. Regardless of a student’s ability and effort, classroom interaction cannot be recaptured. Absences disrupt the continuity of the learning process. Regular attendance enhances learning by exposing students to a greater amount of academic content, instruction and time to apply new concepts and skills. Parents are urged to assist the school by supporting its attendance policy. The school’s policy regarding attendance can be found in the Student Handbook. Student Pictures To be more responsive to the community, the school district allows taking pictures within the school. This includes the use of student pictures on the school’s web site and videotapes. These pictures provide opportunities for the schools to enhance their communications with the community. In granting permission for the use of student pictures, it must be determined to contribute to the learning activity and not be disruptive to the school’s educational climate. Parents who do not grant permission should do so in writing to the attention of the principal no later than September 23, 2016. Student Parking All students who intend to park in the BHS parking lot MUST be registered and have a valid parking sticker. See Parking Form enclosed. Complete and return to Mrs. Kellner in the main office. Pre-arranged Absence/Homework Form The Pre-arranged Absence/Homework Form is intended to assist your son/daughter in maintaining academic success during an absence. A student must be absent 3 or more consecutive days before request for homework is made. Parents are asked to complete the form and submit it to the main office. This form can be accessed on the BHS website under the Resource section. The application will be available in September 2016. Please access the website for more information about this at: http://spirit.prudential.com Admissions Tests The Scholastic Assessment Tests are the standard college admissions tests. The SAT Reasoning Tests and PSAT/NMSQT Tests focus on writing, critical reading and mathematics. Scores are determined on a scale from 200 to 800. The evaluations of different scores vary depending on the college and it’s standards. Most colleges prefer the SAT Reasoning Test to be taken no later than November of the senior year. The SAT Subject Tests are another part of the College Board's SAT program. These examinations give students an opportunity to show their academic strengths in subjects of their choice. These are multiple-choice examinations and are scored the same as the SAT Reasoning Test. Some colleges specify which tests should be taken but others may allow applicants to make that decision. You should find out the requirements of the colleges to which you plan to apply and also see your counselor for more specific information concerning SAT Subject Tests. Both the SAT Reasoning Test and Subjects Tests are administered on all national testing dates except on March 5th when only the Reasoning Test is available. Advanced Placement Tests are administered during a 2-week period in May. Students, especially those enrolled in advanced placement courses, may take these examinations. Colleges may, according to their individual policies, award credit, advanced placement standing or both for the achievement of specific scores on these examinations. The ACT college readiness assessment is a curriculum and standards -based educational and career planning tool that assesses students’ academic readiness for college. The ACT contains four curriculum and standards-based multiple choice assessments in English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and the writing test. Students are allotted approximately four hours to finish the test. Additionally, the ACT includes a career exploration component that stimulates students’ thinking about future plans and relates personal characteristics to career options. This assessment is used by most colleges and universities as part of their admissions requirements. Barrington High School will administer the ACT on October 22, 2016 and April 8, 2017. To learn more about the ACT, as well as the registration process, you can visit the ACT site online at www.actstudent.org or contact the Barrington High School counseling office at 247-3154 PSAT/NMSQT Juniors The PSAT/NMSQT National Merit Scholarship is a program co-sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. It gives you first-hand knowledge/practice for the SAT. The test measures critical reading, math problem solving and writing skills. This year, junior students will be taking the exam on Wednesday, October 19th during school hours. Registration instructions and deadlines can be found in this issue of HIGHLIGHTS. The PSAT practice booklets will be distributed in the guidance office when they arrive in mid-September. You can access free SAT preparation material at www.collegeboard.com Sophomores This year, all RI students in grade 10 only have the opportunity to participate in the PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 during the school day at no cost to students or families. If you want to participate, the student must complete the Google Form that will be sent to their barringtonschools.org account in mid-August. Parents of the class of 2019 will also be notified via email that the link is open for students to register. The registration deadline is Friday, September 23rd.
