A big thank you to our AFWA members that participated in our panel discussion at UTC on Thursday, September 10th! We had a great time meeting and speaking with a group of accounting students, passing on some helpful information, and having group discussion. AFWA hopes to continue fostering their relationship with local universities and colleges in the area through the Job Shadow program as well as other speaking engagements. AUGUST MEMBER OF THE MONTH M ary Johnston attended the University of Tennessee at Nashville night school, graduating in 1974. She pursued a career in teaching at the middle school level. Although certified in French and English, her first position was teaching Math. Since husband Mark's job transferred them state to state every 11 months or so, teaching was not the best career choice. At one point, Mary held teaching certification in 3 different states. Next career choice was teaching skin care for Mary Kay Cosmetics. November will be Mary's 32nd anniversary with Mary Kay. Next career choice was accounting. Mary attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for the accounting course work and is currently studying for the CPA exam. Her accounting loves are tax and payroll. All she needs is a job. Two little known facts about Mary: She is a private pilot, single engine land, VFR. She has circumnavigated the earth and visited 20 countries. PAGE 3 VOLUME 60 ISSUE 03 Accounting & Finance Certification Scholarships PAGE The member relations committee is excited to announce a scholarship program to support AFWA members who are pursuing professional certifications. The scholarship awards may be used to offset the cost of study materials and/or examination fees. Members may access the application in the “Scholarships” section of the AFWA Chattanooga chapter website. Completed applications for the first wave of scholarships will be due on September 30. Now a Senior Investigator, Susan conducts both civil and criminal investigations, dealing mainly with health and retirement plan reviews and service provider audits. Previously, Susan practiced as a civil litigation solicitor in London, England for about 12 years. Susan's clients were mainly trustees, banks and firms of accountants, and she specialized in banking and insolvency law. Taking a break in her legal career, Susan traveled extensively, ending up in California where she took and passed the California Bar. Although she returned to London to continue her legal career, Susan, ultimately decided she would prefer to settle in the States. Susan holds an LLB from the University of Birmingham in England, a Diplôme d'Etudes Juridiques Françaises from a year's study at the University of Limoges, France, and she remains a member of the California Bar. 4 PAGE 5 AFWA Job Shadow Program Update O ur AFWA Job Shadow Program will be kicking off soon! Thank you in advance to everyone who has signed up to be involved! So far, we’ve had a great response rate from our members that are interested in being a part of this program! We’d love to have an even larger pool for students to select from—can you help? “Students in college now are out interns and future employees…” We hope to be working with students from UTC, Lee university, Southern University, and Chattanooga State, helping them to see what opportunities are available with an accounting or finance degree in the Chattanooga area. Already, we have representation from Signal Centers, EPB, Transport Enterprises Leasing, Propex Global, St. Paul’s Episcopal, Blood Assurance, and even some local accounting firms! Would your employer like to be a part of this program? Students in college now are our interns and future employees, as well as members coming to join us at AFWA. Let’s work together to give them a positive experience with both AFWA and the employment opportunities and experiences available to them in the Chattanooga area! Contact Morgen Rose at rosems@epb.net (423)648-1227 and wait to be matched with a local student. S E PT E M B E R D O O R P R I Z E September’s door prize was generously donated by Carol Drinnon.
