Dear Delegate, It gives us great pleasure to welcome you to our 7th Annual Sigma Conference in Aamby Valley, India. Once again, Independent Pharmacy will have an opportunity to make its voice heard for the industry and engage with pharmacy professionals who have given up their time to be with you. This year, our conference theme is ‘Partnering for Purpose’ and will focus on how you can make a real difference in 2015 and overcome those difficult issues that require serious answers. Your Aamby Valley location is one of India’s prime conference venues and we are sure you will have a fantastic conference experience following the success of our previous conferences at Cancun, Mombasa, Shanghai, Mauritius, Phuket and Windsor. Our speakers this year cover a broad spectrum of practice skills within the pharmaceutical industry and will bring a lot of insight and professional experience to help you get the independent sector moving forward with serious commitment and vision. The speaker sessions will be more interactive this year, allowing for some meaningful engagement with the presenters. In addition, we have organised some key CPD sessions, a factory visit, ample networking opportunities and a comprehensive exhibition area situated conveniently in the conference suite. Currently, India presents a very real potential for export and you will have plenty of opportunity to quiz the export specialists who will be on hand to give expert help and advice. As with previous years, we have taken special care to create a conference experience that will not only allow you to engage with the professional side of things, but also give you ample time to relax and take in all the sights and wonders of India, at its best. It is the most populous city in India and the eighth most populous city in the world, with an estimated city population of 18.4 million. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. It is also the wealthiest city in India and has the highest GDP of any city in the south, west or central asia. The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai were home to communities of fishing colonies and for centuries, the islands were under the control of successive indigenous empires before being ceded to the Portuguese and subsequently to the British East India Company. During the mid-18th century, Bombay was reshaped by the Hornby Vellard project, which undertook reclamation of the area between the seven islands from the sea. Along with construction of major roads and railways, the reclamation project, completed in 1845, transformed Bombay into a major seaport on the Arabian Sea. Bombay in the 19th century was characterized by economic and educational development. During the early 20th century it became a strong base for the Indian independence movement. Upon India’s independence in 1947 the city was incorporated into Bombay State. In 1960, following the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, a new state of Maharashtra was created with Bombay as the capital. The city was renamed Mumbai in 1996. Mumbai is the financial, commercial and entertainment capital of India. It is also one of the world’s top ten centres of commerce in terms of global financial flow, generating 6.16% of India’s GDP and accounting for 25% of industrial output, 70% of maritime trade in India (Mumbai Port Trust & JNPT), and 70% of capital transactions to India’s economy. The city houses important financial institutions such as the Reserve Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange, the National Stock Exchange of India, major scientific and nuclear institutes like BARC, NPCL, IREL, TIFR, AERB, AECI, and the Department of Atomic Energy. The city also houses India’s Hindi (Bollywood) and Marathi film and television industry. Mumbai’s business opportunities, as well as its potential to offer a higher standard of living, attracts migrants from all over India, making the city a melting pot of many communities and cultures. 4 Aamby VALLEY Planned opulence Aamby Valley, India’s first planned hill city, has been established as an integrated development spanning an area of 10,600 acres. It is positioned as a premium, self-contained city with an infrastructure that provides schooling, a hospital, power, water, telecommunications, shopping facilities, a championship golf course, a town plaza, a community centre, hospitality services and recreational areas. Aamby Valley is a gated community, located 120 km from Mumbai, lies 25 km off the town of Lonavala on the Mumbai–Pune expressway, it is associated with high quality living, luxurious and spacious dwellings and recreational and leisure facilities that is the boast of the south. Every corner of the city has been purpose built to match international luxury standards and the city exudes this from each of its prime locations. The award winning Golf Course has been exclusively designed by David Hemstock Associates (UK) and upgraded and remodelled to championship standard by the PGA DC of Great Britain and Ireland. Aamby Valley City is the only planned luxury city to have a PGA-accredited golfing academy. The golf course is situated at 2,700 feet above sea level and is a marvel of modern golfing architecture. Experience a bit of Indian nostalgia when taking a sightseeing trip on the Aamby Express, a 32-seater trackless train with digital lights and a music system. Increase the adrenaline rush further by flying the turbo-powered motor Stemme Gliders at a cruise speed of 280 km/hr. The experience will leave you breathless. There’s a plethora of water sports at the Wetlands, where you can indulge yourself with jet-skiing, motor boat rides, kayaking, banana boat rides and much more. If its quiet and tranquil you’re looking for, then the night safari is going to be the ultimate experience where you will be able to take in Aamby Valley’s animal life in a whole new way. Plans are afoot to add a range of premium hospitality and recreational properties and leisure facilities to the city, which will include world class five star hotels, a theme park, a convention centre, a snow theme park, an aquarium, an indoor sky diving attraction, an outlet mall, a concert theatre and an eco spa. At Aamby Valley, you will be part of an exclusive premium gated city experience and not limited to conventionality. 5 Excursions in MUMBAI Mumbai Heritage Walk The Mumbai Heritage Walk begins with a morning drive to the Gateway of India. The Gateway is Mumbai’s principle landmark and its yellow basalt arch was erected on the waterfront in 1924, to commemorate King George V’s visit to Mumbai in 1911. The majestic Taj Mahal Palace and the Tower hotel was built in 1903 and is considered to be one of the key landmarks of the city. On your Heritage walk, you will pass by the University of Mumbai, the Rajabahi Clock Tower and the Chatrapati Shivaki Terminus. Elephanta Caves Excursion to Elephanta by motor launch (Caves closed on Mondays). The island of Elephanta is just an hour away from Mumbai by motor launch. The cave temples were excavated between the 5th and 8th centuries AD and are famous for their magnificently sculpted panels. The best known, is one that depicts the Maheshmurti, a three-headed image of the Indian god Shiva. This island was so named by the Portuguese after the large stone elephant near the landing place and which now stands at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the mainland. The caves are reached by a stairway up the hillside from the ferry landing. Dharavi Slum Tour Dharavi, Asia’s largest ‘slum’ is home to nearly a million people.
