Oriana House to dedicate building in honor of Fannie M. Lewis
Oriana House, Inc., is honoring the legacy of the late Cleveland City Councilmember
Fannie M. Lewis by renaming a building after her. The dedication of the Fannie M.
Lewis Community Corrections and Treatment Center will take place on Wednesday,
June 1, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. Lewis was instrumental in having Oriana House open
a halfway house at 1829 East 55th Street in Cleveland’s Ward 7. The Community
Corrections and Treatment Center opened in 2001, providing services that give people
the opportunity to change their lives; a possibility that Lewis always saw in others.
“Fannie Lewis saw her passionate efforts and perseverance in her community as
the way to a better life for her family and other families in the Hough neighborhood.
She recognized the value and critical need to invest in the neighborhood and in the
people who live here; and she knew Oriana House would be a part of that effort,” said
Oriana House CEO and President James Lawrence.
Born in Tennessee, Lewis moved to Cleveland in 1951 with her family, settling in
the Hough neighborhood. Lewis was a strong advocate for the residents in Hough and
was elected as Hough-Ward 7 representative to the Cleveland City Council in 1980; a
seat she retained until her death.
In Ohio today, there are more than 50,000 inmates incarcerated in the state prison
system with 20% of the inmates coming from Cuyahoga County. These incarcerated
citizens are returning to Cuyahoga County and this is where the Fannie M. Lewis
Community Corrections and Treatment Center plays a vital role.
The Fannie M. Lewis Community Corrections and Treatment Center provides an
excellent environment for non-violent offenders by aiding their transition back into the
community. Offenders are individually assessed. They are offered case management
services, chemical dependency treatment, life skills classes, employment assistance,
educational assistance, recreation services and religious services. The primary goal
is to ease these offenders back into their community as self-sufficient citizens who
contribute by paying taxes, child support, and any restitution they may owe. Research
shows that individuals are significantly less likely to reoffend when they are placed into
programs that offer rehabilitation, teach new skills, and focus on successful living.
The open house on Wednesday, June 1, is from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. with remarks
from Lewis’s family and community leaders beginning at 2:30 p.m. Tours will also be
provided.
Oriana House, Inc., is a private, non-profit agency that operates community
