Australasian Team Roping Association Newsletter SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER ISSUE 2015/2016 VOLUME 4 ISSUE 3 Finals Fever 1 Thanks For A Great Season 2 Proudly Introducing The Lazy D Team The Mayer Family Lazy D Longhorns, started in 1995 after the purchase of 12 cows from Alan and Mark Knox. Les Mayer (Co-founder of Lazy D Longhorns) was a steer wrestler at the time and wanted to breed his own cattle and start to team rope. Eventually Les and his wife Sally had begun their breeding program. Having always been interested in the Longhorn breed, the new purchases where a dream that was becoming a reality for the two. As the property they had bought was not large enough to make a living out of commercial cattle they came to the conclusion that, this was a good enough reason to breed the lines that they wanted. After they purchased the cows the husband and wife team embarked on an A.I. program using a range of bulls to see how varied the results would be. The program would see results differ with each produced calf, this included Maverick Canadian Connection and Rural Frost. The plan from the beginning was to select small framed cattle that get horn big enough to rope early. So now days their cattle often have horns big enough to rope before there bodies are. The herd over the years has fluctuated in size depending on seasons every time they reached 50 cows it stops raining. The Longhorns have no trouble with the dry but they have had to cull numbers to save feed for horses. Currently they have 33 cows joined this year to a Superman Rural Frost bull that they breed. Lazy D Longhorns Where Junior Ropers get the chance to WIN a top bred Longhorn Heifer to have as their own In Les’s Words: The heifer this year is the 5th one so far I decided to donate. After the first AGM I attended, where the junior team roping idea was floated by me, I believe that kids and the family connection in our sport is the best thing going. What other sport especially a horse sport can you practice compete and win large amounts of cash and prizes with your kids? The bonds and relationships developed in the rope pen are truly wonderful and our association makes it so easy for the whole family to compete together. The arena at home was a long drawn out project that came together with the help of a few good mates, being all timber and big posts-at that it didn't go up overnight. When it was almost finished I was involved in a work accident and didn't even ride a horse for three years. The facilities at the Lazy D are under improvement over the next few months while the drought forced us to sell off all the young cattle. So we are a ways off running, but it has given us time to make needed improvements and securing more country. This has assured the numbers of cows into the future. I Must mention my wonderful wife for all her hard work as this was mainly my dream, but she has been behind it all the way. The boys have been tireless workers especially Clayton who suffers Cerable Palsy and doesn't rope but is always there doing the back yards opening the box dragging the dummy and helping out with the horses. If you would like any information on the breeding program that the Lazy D have, or if you are in the market for a well bred Longhorn to get your own herd started. Make sure you give Les or Sally a call, they have a wealth of knowledge and will be happy to help with any purchase you may be looking at. Who will be this year’s winner? Thank you Victor and the team at Diamond Wool Pads for your continued support to the ATRA, not only during the season, but at the Finals as well. Will you be the lucky winner of a Diamond Wool Pad at the Finals??? All Horse’s love their Diamond Wool Pads Dark Horse Arena Series Western Australia Presents Congratulations to all the winners from Dark Horse. Keep up the great work !!! 2 0 1 6 Monday 22nd February Saturday 27th February 2016 2 0 1 6 Are YOU READY? ©TUFF MAGIC PROMOTIONS 2015 0 2 4 1 Treasurers Report This year’s Treasury report has been compiled by the ATRA Treasurer LaceyJae O’Halloran, as you will see below, there have been many gains from the past season. Please read through the report and should you have any questions or thoughts do not forget to make yourself present at the AGM during the National Finals in Capella. If you can not make the AGM, but wish to have a say, ensure you get your query to Jody at head office no latter than the 25th of September. Our Financial statements are still under audit finalisation, however preliminary results indicate the ATRA made an approximate $10k loss - a variance to the original forecast target of breaking even. When compared to the 2013-2014 season $30k loss, the BOD have worked hard to recover that with the implementation of an improved budgeting and planning system. It is important to note that the $10k loss is affected by the fact that a number of National Finals commitments were paid in June to confirm bookings when we don’t see income for the finals until the new financial year. Ultimately, the ATRA had a positive season in terms of performance as indicated by the statistics and with closer management and cost control we will continue to develop positively. The 2015-2016 season budget will plan to break even or make a small profit and further focus will be placed on delivering value to the members. I will provide you all with a comprehensive update at the AGM in October. Thanks and Happy Roping, Lacey-Jae O’Halloran Treasurer - ATRA Here is just a taste of what you could WIN at this Years National Finals IMPORTANT REMINDERS FROM HEAD OFFICE * Don’t forget Finals Entries must be post marked Friday 11th of September. * All Entries and payment must be either received by email or postmarked by 5pm Friday. * Members looking for partners: #9 Clint Van Brooke is looking for a heeler #5 or below; #9 Sharon Warner is looking for a heeler #7 or below * Please contact Head Office for contact details of any members looking for partners. * Check the Official ATRA Facebook page for regular updates leading up to the finals. * Arena Management Software seminars will be held during the finals by Jerry Kendrick from the USA, should you wish to attend a seminar, please lodge your interest through Head Office. * First A.M. I would like to congratulate the winners from all the zones who won buckles for the 2014/2015 year. We had our NQ presentation at Troy Clive’s venue along with his series presentations on a Saturday night after a day of roping and it was quite a good night. We were feed well and then we had the presentations and many drinks, followed by a few games of roping bales and dummy heads and heels (and each other) which saw competitors, partners and kids having a good time. It has been a pleasure to sit on the board this year and represent our members. I won’t be sit ting for election this year due to some work commitments but I am sure there will be good peo ple sitting that will do the job well. I would just like to encourage people to contact their zone representative or any of the board members for that matter if you have any concerns or que ries. I say this because it is good for us board members to know what our members are feeling about our organization. If you hear nothing then you assume everything is good and everyone is happy. The whole year that I have been on the board only one person has approached me with is sues that they have, so I assume everyone else is happy. So the point I’m trying to make is if you are reading this and think crap, I’m not happy with things then you need to contact you board members and discuss it with them, and be professional about it, and if you have good ideas put them forward. This can be a great organization and with people like the McGee’s pro moting shows like “The Big Show” is fantastic. This is a credit to them because the work they put in to run it is huge. Well that’s it from me and I wish everyone the best of luck at the finals and travel safe and enjoy yourself there and at any other roping you attend. Good luck.
