your child will be excluded from attending
school and will not be allowed into the building
until records are in compliance.

Book Notes from the Library
All our students have been through the
library for an orientation and book check
out. Please be aware that books are
stamped with due dates at every check out.
Students also have been instructed in how
to access Destiny OPAC where they can
see everything they have checked out, the
date their materials are due, how much
money they may owe and whether a book
they requested is ready to be picked up.
They can also write short reviews of
books they’ve read! Other students find
these peer reviews extremely helpful.
Summer Reading Raffle
HCMS students were invited to read over the
summer, either through an official summer
reading program or on their own. Students
then talked to Mrs. Raynes about the books
they read and each title
earned them a raffle ticket.
A drawing was held on September 21st and
the following students won a prize for their
summer reading:
Veronica Szafoni, Allison Lisota, Lydia Bednar
Congratulations!
A big THANKS to Olivia Parker who
suggested the program and created all the
advertising posters at school!
Happy Reading!
Counselor’s Corner
Let’s talk about test anxiety. What happens when you are faced with a test?
Do you panic a little bit? Are you worried that you aren’t as prepared as you
should be? Are the butterflies in your stomach working over time? Do you get
a headache, have tense muscles, shake or feel sweaty? Well that’s OK! Having
feelings like these are quite common and can even act as a motivating force
to help us perform well on a test. But, having these feelings can also become
so overwhelming that they interfere with how well we do on a test….
Here’s a few tips to help reduce test anxiety:
*Reduce anxiety and tension by being prepared for the test – study in small
chunks for several days leading up to the test. Avoid cramming for a test as
this may increase your anxiety and does not facilitate learning the material.
*Your peers are feeling the same way you are, so why not make a study
group? You can review notes, go over the book, ask each other questions,
clarify information, review study guides and quiz each other.
*Develop tricks that will help you remember the material - like using
mnemonics….I’ll bet you used HOMES to remember the Great Lakes - Huron,
Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior…right? Why not apply that to what you’
re learning today?
*Get a good night’s rest before the test. It’s much harder to recall information
when your brain is sleepy and foggy.
*When it’s time for the test, review all of the questions before you start
answering them. Then go back and answer the questions you know for sure;
then answer the questions you aren’t 100% sure of; and lastly, answer those
questions you don’t know. This will help you from getting stuck on a question
you may not know, and not answering the rest of the questions on the test
that you do know!
After the test is done, RELAX! Take a deep breath and be proud of your work.
Think about what helped you manage your anxiety for this test, use it for the
next test. Did you feel that you were prepared? If not, make some changes to
your study habits so next time you are better prepared.
Remember, a test is a snapshot of how well you know the information at that
time. The grade you receive does not define who you are. Instead, use that
grade to gauge how well your study habits are working, and make
adjustments as necessary.

over 1300 radish seeds and are testing to see how planting depth affects
germination rates. In addition, students are applying their graphing skills
learned in math class.
Math
Students this month are exploring ratios and proportions by looking at
charts. They are learning how to analyze data that represents if a problem
varies directly or not.

Math Update: Math classes will be finishing the fraction units and
moving to decimals. Honors math classes are finishing the units
involving decimals and will be working with expressions. 6th graders
are encouraged to ask questions and to be advocates for themselves
when they are unclear of concepts being presented in class.
Science News: Science classes will continue studies in the Ecology
Unit by investigating biomes, constructing food webs, and exploring
the delicate balances that exist in the world in which we live.
Students will be conducting research and dissecting owl pellets.
Social Studies: In Social Studies sixth graders will continue to explore
the development of ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia. If you are
looking for an educational outing, consider making a trip to the

ELA Students Explore the World of Auggie Pullman in
the Novel, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio
6th Grade ELA students are presently immersed in the world of
Wonder, a heartfelt novel, by R.J. Palacio, based on the life of Auggie
Pullman. While Auggie is a normal ten-year-old boy on the inside, he
struggles with severe cranial deformities. The reader follows Auggie’s
struggle to fit in with the students at Beecher Prep, his new school and
the dynamics of a family dealing with it all. Wonder makes us all stop
and think about the way we treat people dealing with disabilities.
Palacio challenges all of us to “Choose Kind”.
