Workers who deal with electricity need to be protected in the event that an arc flash occurs. Arc Thermal Performance Value
(ATPV) represents the incident thermal energy the fabric can withstand before the wearer experiences a second-degree burn.
CAL/CM2
This calculation identifies the amount of heat energy that can be delivered at a particular distance from an arc flash. Once you know this value, you know the ATPV rating of the clothing required to protect against arc flash. For example, working on 600V switchgear with exposed, energized parts could typically present an arc flash hazard of up to 25 cal/cm2 (that is, an ATPV rating of 25) and would necessitate a Category 3
Protective Clothing System.
HAZARD RISK CATEGORY (HRC)
HRC 1 protects against 4 cal/cm2.
HRC 2 protects against 8 cal/cm2.
HRC 3 protects against 25 cal/cm2.
HRC 4 protects against 40 cal/cm2.
FABRIC WEIGHT
The heavier the fabric, the more fibers there are per square yard. Fabric weight is typically measured in ounces per square yard or grams per square meter. Typically heavier fabric protects better, although the content of the fabric is key.
