FrontLine Installation System
FrontLine is a system for installation of service to
modern office workplaces. The system includes products which enable the services to be supplied from
the ceiling, the wall or the floor.
The system consists of two parts:
1. Service content which includes socket outlets and
connections for power, telecommunication and data
for access to networks and other services.
2. Service carriers are the cable trunking, servicepoles, floor outlet boxes, service posts and service boxes, with 80 mm front openings (F80®), which make the
socket outlets and connections accessible.
The F80® front openings ensure that the service
content is compatible with the various service carriers.
Most FrontLine service carriers can also be delivered pre-wired, with the required service content,
ready for connection to service gates in the main network. This will reduce the on-site installation time
and make rearrangement of the premises easier.
Every pre-wired product is given a serial number
and is tested prior to delivery. An individual test re-
port is always included.

Established and Approved Components
With a number of established and approved components you can, on-site, construct and install Medical
Ward Units adapted to unique nursing situations.
The kit allows the construction of a ward unit for
the most straightforward form of common ward up to
the most complex installations for intensive care spaces.
The cable trunking that is one of the main components can also be used to advantage as a carrier of, for
example, service content (power, telecommunications,
data, etc.) in other work spaces of the hospital or
nursing home such as offices or laboratories.
The Basis: Cable Trunking, INKA
The concept for the kit is built around Thorsman’s
cable trunking in aluminium of type INKA. This installation trunking is carrier for all electricity, telecommunications, data and low-voltage current. The
size of the trunking is chosen with regard to cable capacity and equipment required. Cable trunking is
available in several heights. Some are two-compartment systems, where the lower compartment is
screened off by an integral partition. The trunking is
available in two depths, 72 mm or 90 mm. A wide
range of accessories are available for all INKA cable
trunking to ease installation and offer complete solutions.

A complete range of products for outlets and connections for power, telecommunication, data etc., is available, all mounted easily in the front of the installation
trunking.
General and Reading/Examining Lighting
The kit includes a combined lighting unit for general
and reading/examining light. The lighting complies
with the German DIN requirements for light dispersion in nursing spaces. The lighting unit can be fitted
on the wall close to the INKA cable trunking or separately. Length can be either full-length or adapted to
the choice of lighting rail. A bed/examining lamp with
arm for mounting on either wall or table is available as
an accessory.
Gas
The assortment of gas outlets include units of
Scandinavian, German and English standard for connection to air, oxygen, nitrous oxide, etc. The gas duct
can, as with the lighting unit, be mounted on the wall
close to the INKA trunking or separately. Gas-pipe
cover is available in two designs.
Colour Choice
All of the visible profile components can be natural
anodized or powder coated in a number of standard
colours. The colours can be combined in accordance
to the wishes of the customer to harmonize with
room decor.

Mounting and installation
The hospital trunking components are fixed directly
to the wall. The service content is installed in the
front opening.
The snap-in system makes the installation quick
and easy. Detailed mounting instructions are
enclosed.
Power and Communication
The trunking can be equipped with FrontLine Access
and Outlet Program type CYB.
Delivery lengths
Standard length of INKA trunking and front covers,
2.5 m. INKA, lighting and gas pipe front cover
available cut to length, max. 5.0 m by special
order.

Gas outlets for different standards
General and Reading/Examining Lighting
Our assortment includes outlets corresponding to
Scandinavian (AGA), German (Dräger, Greggersen)
and British (Medaes) standards. The gas outlets are
self-closing and the gas flow cuts off when equipment
is disconnected from the quick coupling.
The outlets are gas-specific according to the different hospital standards, which means that connection
to the wrong outlet is impossible.
The selection includes outlets for breathing oxygen,
nitrous oxide, breathing air, vaccum, etc.
There are lighting rails for different light requirements.

The ultimate task of a properly designed Medical
Ward Unit is to offer the exact function that the nursing situation calls for.
The lighting profile can be fitted with various lighting
rails for general light (indirect), reading/examining
and night light.
General light is available in various lengths with
standard fluorescent tubes type T26 or new technology tube type T5. Reading/examining light is of standard compact tube type TC.
As a supplement to the permanent lighting there are
two types of bed/examining lamps by Luxo and
Sunnex for table or wall mounting.

The power outlet can be delivered colour-coded in
white, green or red in order to differentiate normal
power from disruption-free or priority power.

Service content of type CYB contains outlets and connections for power, telecommunications and data networks. The CYB outlet cover plate has a completely
smooth surface which facilitates cleaning.
Almost any of the existing call systems can be integrated into the Thorsman Medical Ward units. Different types of patient call units are easily mounted
into the Thorsman Medical Ward Unit, giving the
patient quick access for emergency calls.

Outlets and connections for power, telecommunications and data have distinct labelling panels. Labelling
is applied to the mounting frame behind the cover
plate. This means that labelling remains even if the
cover plate is removed, thus eliminating risk of a mixup when refitting.

Cable Trunking Design
Aluminium cable trunking for wall surface and flush
mounting. Cable shelves can be used to divide the
trunking into various compartments, so that power
and low current cables can be routed in the same
trunking as telecommunications and data cables.
Several cable trunking products, e.g. INKA-161-2 and
INKA-217-2 are two-compartment systems, in which
the lower compartment is screened off by an integral
partition. Both compartments have separate flush
front covers. Earthing slots are provided in trunking
base and front cover.

Composition of Lighting Profile
The Medical Ward Unit offers many possible variations for installation of reading/examining light as
well as general light. This makes it possible to obtain
the right lighting environment for varying ward requirements.
Fitting the lighting profile around the entire room
gives maximum space and flexibility for lighting
installation.

Lighting Profile Dimensions
A suitable number of lighting rails can be fitted in the
upper compartment of the profile for general (indirect) light. The indirect light can be of standard fluorescent tubes of type T26 (36 or 58W). Alternatively
the new technology fluorescent tubes of type T5
(28W or 54W) can be chosen. The lighting rails can
either be installed with standard or electronic ballasts.
There is also space for a 5W night light in these rails.
The lighting profile can be cut to length for a smaller
unit and fitted with stop ends for mounting over a
bed. Whether the general light is to be provided by
standard fluorescent tubes of type T26 or of type T5,
the minimum length (L) for cutting the lighting profile can be seen in Figure 1.
Lighting rails for reading/examining are installed in
the lower compartment over the respective beds. The
reading/examining light uses standard compact TC
tubes (18 W or 36 W) with either standard or electronic ballasts. The TC 36 W compact tube may also
be installed with a dimmable feature for adjustment as
a reading or examining light.

Placement of Light Fitting Rail
The Light Fitting Rail of type TC (A) is always in one
section and is installed in the lower compartment of
the lighting profile.
The Light Fitting Rail of type T26 or T5 is divided
into two sections. The Light Tube section (B) is
installed in the upper compartment of the Lighting
Profile. The ballast section (C) can be installed in the
lower compartment for a short lighting profile section
or in the upper compartment for a long lighting profile section.
All rails are provided with push-in termination for
easy wiring. For selection of Light Fitting Rail, see
page 41.

Electronic Ballasts
The new T5 fluorescent tubes are characterized by a
reduced cross-sectional dimension (16 mm). The
more conventional T26 tubes are 26 mm in diameter.
More important are the economical advantages of the
T5 tubes:

Higher luminous efficiency
•
Optimized thermal behavior
•
Longer Lamp service life
All fluorescent tubes can be connected to electronic
ballasts (35000 Hz). Lighting with electronic ballasts
gives an energy saving of about 25% compared to
standard ballasts (50Hz). The lamp service life of the
fluorescent tube increases by up to 50%.

The values stated below are valid for a 2-bed room. Room dimensions are L=4.5 m, W=4 m, H=2.5 m.
General Light
General lighting is indirect, creating a comfortable
atmosphere by the use of non-dazzling illumination.
Fluorescent lamps in either T26 (36 W or 58 W) or T5
(28 W or 54 W) format may be used.
Medium intensity of illumination
The use of fluorescent lamps conserves energy while
providing the required illumination intensity. The
warm-white colour of the light helps provide a sense
of comfort and well being.

The reading light is placed above each bed. The choice

The night light helps the hospital staff to move in the
room without switching on the main lighting. The
night light can be a 5W bulb fastened on the Light

Gas Outlet Installation Techniques
The Thorsman Medical Ward Unit offers the possibility to include gas outlets to Scandinavian, German
and British standards. The selection includes outlets
for breathing oxygen, nitrous oxide, breathing air, gas
exit, vacuum and instrumental air, see page 44.

The gas outlet is fixed on a wall-mounted fixing profile, the gas outlet cover is snap-fitted on to the fixing
profile.
The gas outlet cover profile is designed to provide
large capacity for gas piping. The cover is prepared for
choice of 1,2,3, or 4 gas outlets, see page 45. For more
gas outlets a combination of these covers is possible.
The positioning of the gas outlets is prepared for
c/c measure of 200 mm. This distance is suitable to
give appropriate space for a smooth installation and
gas pipe connection.

Gas connection standards
Different standards for gas connection are used in various countries. Common to the different standards is
the unique adaptation technique in combination with
a colour code, preventing connection of the wrong
type of equipment to the wrong gas type.
The program offers gas outlets according to
Scandinavian, German (DIN, two types) and British
(BS) standard. The flexible mounting technique also
makes it possible to mount gas outlets according to
additional standards or local brands.

Layout Planning
The Thorsman Medical Ward Unit (MWU) can to a
large extent be adapted to the existing room dimensions. In the layout planning phase there has to be
paid attention to certain minimum dimensions when
specifying the Medical Ward Unit.
The graphics below visualizes a layout of a Medical
Ward Unit for up to 3 beds. The length of the Medical
Ward Unit is mainly depending on the lighting alternative chosen. The dimensions marked in the graphics
are of importance when deciding the total installation.

To control fluorescent light fittings with controllable HF units. 1-50 HF units can be controlled. The
positive and negative poles of the controller must be connected to the positive and negative poles
of the HF unit. Poles 1 and 2 of the switches are wired to switch the fittings on and off. The break
function is rated at max 6 A (max 360 W fluorescent tube rating). If the load is higher, the break
function can control a relay coil instead. Note that the fluorescent tubes must not go out at the minimum setting of the controller. Rating 1-10 V for 1-50 HF units made by Philips, Osram, Siemens,
Helvar, etc. To be connected to the plus and minus connections of the controller.
Note that it is very important to observe correct polarity throughout the installation.

light. Complete with standard or electronic ballasts and reflectors, ready to use. All wiring on the
rail is provided for. Push-in termination. Prepared for earthing. Screw fixed, supplied with screws.
The rails type T26 and T5 are two-section rails to be installed in separate compartments in the lighting

Cable Capacity Guide (CCG)
Approximate calculation for dimensioning cable trunking
The CCG diagram is a quick and simple way of working out the minimum dimensions of the installation trunking for a given number of cables. If the cables are to be laid in different compartments in the same
trunking, the total height of the trunking will be the sum of the compartment heights.
This is how to use the CCG diagram:
1. Read the diagram clockwise
2. Choose the number of cables (N) on the upper vertical scale in the
middle of the diagram
3. Go to the right in the diagram up to the red line that corresponds to
the relevant cable diameter (D). Directly below the intersection point
you can read off the total cable area (A) on the right-hand horizontal scale. If there are cables with different diameters, the total cable
area (A) is the sum of the cable areas for the various cable diameters.
4. Now continue down from the intersection point for total cable area
to the line that corresponds to the desired fill factor.
5. Directly to the left of the intersection point you can read off a suitable trunking area (S) on the lower vertical scale.
6. Then continue to the left from the value for trunking area to the line
that corresponds to the desired trunking depth for trunking with or
without flush boxes (if the trunking is used as feeder trunking).
7. Go straight up from the intersection point and read off on the lefthand horizontal scale the smallest trunking height (H) that is required to run the cables.

A number of cables are to be laid in installation trunking fitted with a
cable shelf so that power cables and low-current cables can be kept
separate.
Known data:
Power cables: 10 cables of 20 mm diameter (the lower green line in
the upper part of the diagram)
Low-current cables: 22 cables of 12 mm diameter (the upper green
line)
The installation trunking must be 90 mm deep, without boxes and be
60 % filled.
Calculated data:
The cable area (A) for the low-current will be about 3350 mm2. For a
60% fill factor this cable area gives a compartment area (S) of about
5600 mm2. This means that the minimum height (H) of the compartment
where the cables will run is about 60 mm (trunking without box).
The cable area (A) for the power cables will be about 4600 mm2. For
a 60% fill factor this cable area (S) gives a compartment area of about
7700 mm2. This means that the minimum height (H) of the compartment
where the cables will run is about 85 mm (trunking without box).
Suitable installation trunking should therefore be higher than 145 mm
(the sum of 60 mm for the low current cable compartment and 85 mm
for the power cable compartment).
The final choice of installation trunking is made with the aid of the list
of our range of trunking (page 16-17) and the associated detailed
cable capacity tables (pages 52-58).
