The laser parts in this catalog are sold as components only. Unless the
item is labeled as “C.D.R.H. certified”, the item is sold as a component
only. For information about C.D.R.H. regulations see the section with
the same heading on page 18.
Brief Laser Glossary
Class The Center for Devices and Radiological Health classifies lasers by maximum output power and
wavelength. The lasers in this catalog are class II, IIIa, IIIb, and class IV. The higher the class, the higher
the maximum power, and correspondingly, there are more safety precautions that must be maintained.
Divergence The full angle at which a laser beam expands. Expressed in milliradians (mRad.), it corresponds to approximately the number of millimeters the beam will spread for each meter of travel. For
example, a 1.5 mRad. divergence will correspond to 15 millimeters of beam spread at a 10 meter distance.
1.0
Relative Sensitivity
Apparent Power / Brightness The intensity of light as it appears to the human eye. The eye is most
sensitive to wavelengths (colors) in the center of the visible spectrum. Hence, green light will appear
brighter tthan any other color of light of the same power or magnitude. As another example, a 633nm red
Helium-Neon laser appears approximately eight times brighter than a red 670nm diode laser of the same
output power. See the diagram to the right for relative eye sensitivity versus wavelength.

Wavelength (nm)
700
Milliwatt The power that gives rise to the production of energy at the rate of one one-thousandth of a joule per second. In less
technical terms, it is simply the amount of light energy.
Mode Only the single spatial mode, TEM00, provides a solid beam throughout its diameter. Multi-mode lasers have an increased
overall power output for the same size tube, however, the wavefront intensity is segmented.
Wavelength Electromagnetic energy is transmitted in the form of a sinusoidal wave. The wavelength is the physical distance covered
by one cycle of this wave. Visible light is in the electomagnetic spectrum from 400 nm to 750nm. Within this range we percieve the
light as being different colors. At 400nm light is a deep violet color, at 500nm- green, 590nm- orange, 700nm deep red.
Polarization With respect to a beam of electromagnetic radiation, the polarization direction is the direction of the electric field vector.
The polarization vector is always at right angles to the beam direction, and can be random (unpolarized beam), linear, or elliptical.
C.D.R.H. Precautions

Laser Diode Modules
All of our laser diode modules utilize index-guided lasers. These are preferred over gain-guided lasers for superior optical performance due to less astigmatism, and lower overall power consumption. Each module is reverse polarity protected, and emits a
continous wave (CW) beam. However, the lasers can be modulated using a modulated drive signal up to 600 Hz square-wave.
Our modulatable lasers feature a third lead for modulation, and can achieve bandwidths up to 500Khz.

Helium-Neon Laser Heads and Tubes
Helium-Neon Lasers are very popular due to their nice beam characteristics and relative inexpense. We have a variety of He-Ne
lasers, all of which output a single mode (TEM00), randomly polarized red beam (632.8 nm wavelength). These lasers are often used
for holography, demonstrations, alignment systems, lightshows, pointing, etc. See opposite page for corresponding laser power
supplies. Hard-sealed helium-neon lasers have a life expectancy of 10,000 to 20,000 hours. The lasers on this page have been pulled
from equipment. Each laser has been thoroughly tested and includes a six or twelve month warranty as indicated by the number
following the hyphen in the item number.

Helium-Neon Laser Power Supplies
When choosing a power supply for your laser, pick a power supply that matches the operating current specified for the laser head.
Helium-Neon lasers operate best at their recommended operating current. Operating the laser above or below the optimum current
will decrease laser output power, and can decrease the lasers operating life.
These switch-mode power supplies are the epoxied ‘brick’ type power supplies made by leading manufacturers such as Laser
Drive, Inc. and Power Technologies, Inc. All of the power supplies produce the necessary start-voltage to start the plasma tube.
For the purpose of this catalog, the following terms correspond to these maximum current ranges:
High-Current:
6.0mA and greater
Medium-Current:
6.0mA or less
Low Current:
4.5mA or less

Laser Lightshow Glossary
Beam Effect Using the lasers beam as a sculptural element in space (as opposed to shining it on a wall to create graphics) . A
common technique is to scan the beam through theatrical smoke. If a line is scanned you will see a plane of laser light; if a circle is
scanned you see a cone.
Lumia A gauze-like effect produced by shining a laser beam through distorting material such as rippled glass.
Scanner Any device which moves back and forth; usually refers to a galvanometer scanner. Two are needed to draw laser graphics.
A mirror on each scanner moves in response to an electrical current. The scanners are arranged so the beam reflects first off one
mirror, then off the other. The first mirror moves the beam horizontally, the second moves it vertically. This arrangement means the
scanners can position the beam anywhere within a square area. By repeatedly scanning the same signal at high speeds, the illusion
of a single, fixed image is created.
Scanner Amp An electronic device which conditions a signal from a computer or other source, and makes it compatible with
galvanometer scanners. Closed-loop scanner amplifiers are used with position-detecting scanners; the amplifier controls the scanner
based on position feedback signals. Open-loop scanner amplifiers are used with non-position detecting scanners.
Laser Projector Equipment which takes a laser beam and produces projected graphics or beam effects.
Vector Graphics Images created by moving from point to point —examples include handwriting and computer plotters. Most laser
graphics are vector graphics. To produce a laser graphic, a computer is first used to draw a series of connect-the-dot points. These
are translated to electrical signals and are sent to the scanners. At the projection screen, the moving beam travels from point to point
at high speeds, smoothing out the dots. This creates the illusion of a fixed, non-moving image.
Blanking The technique of turning the laser beam on and off with precise control (as opposed to chopping). For scanned graphics
blanking allows images to have disconnected sections where the beam is hidden. Blanking can be digital (on/off) or analog (continuous intensity control). Blanking can be performed with a third scanner, an acosto-optic modulator, or by electronically contolling the
laser output as done with semiconductor lasers.
ILDA Speed Ratings The International Laser Display Association has developed a standard to measure the performance of
scanners and scanner driver cards. The two most common “standard” speeds for scanners is 12,000 points-per-second and
24,000 points-per-second while displaying the ILDA test pattern. Speed standards are designed to help make artwork compatable
with different scanners and scanner amps. When displaying artwork that was designed for slower scanners on high-speed scanners, the points that make up the artwork may become apparent. To eliminate this the scanners must be tuned to a slower speed.

holograms of people, computer graphics, and solid objects. And once those holograms are mastered, experimenters can follow
Iovine's instructions for more advanced spilt-beam, color, and stereographic holography. 208p 110 illus. 7 x 10

Warning
Familiarize yourself with these components before attempting any assembly. Both high-voltage and laser energy
can be very dangerous! We take no responsibility for your actions. These lasers are sold as components only;
when assembled, they must incorporate the safety requirements set forth by the Center for Devices and Radiological Health of the Food and Drug Administration.
General Caution
Common sense dictates that one should avoid direct eye exposure to a laser beam or its reflection. Even
diffuse reflections can be dangerous at close proximity or from higher power lasers. Please call or write
the Center for Devices and Radiological Health for complete guidlines on laser safety.
C.D.R.H. Regulations
When assembled for use in the United States, lasers must conform to the safety regulations of the Center
for Devices and Radiological Health of the Food and Drug Administration. C.D.R.H. regulations classify
each laser by power, labeling, and mechanical requirements. Detailed information about these requirements is available by contacting:

High-Voltage Warning
All Helium-Neon laser power supplies emit high-voltage, typically 1500 - 3000 VDC with a 10-15 KV
trigger voltage. The output current of these supplies is typically 3 - 12 milliamps, which can be lethal. If
you are not familiar with high-voltage hazards, do not attempt utilizing these supplies before becoming
aware of the dangers.
