3. Introduction to Aegis
Aegis is a new generation of Ring Main
Units mainly designed for secondary
distribution networks up to 24kV. This
range is available in indoor and outdoor
formats to suit various application needs.
All the live parts and switching functions
are insulated with SF6 gas and sealed in a
stainless steel tank ensuring a high level of
reliability, personnel safety and virtually
maintenance free operation.
The structural tank welding is performed by a robotic
welding process ensuring high reliability with a product
life expectancy of more than 30 years. The housing is
fully treated using zinc coated steel and electro statically
applied, oven cured paint to resist degradation from
pollution and harsh climatic conditions.
The transformer protection is by vacuum Circuit Breaker.
On request, the units can be supplied with integrated
automation for remote monitoring and control functions.
Characteristics:
• 12kV, 17.5kV and 24kV ratings
• Non extensible range with 3 and 4 switching functions in a single tank
• Integrated cable testing facility on front face eliminating the need for cable disconnection
• Suitable for indoor and outdoor applications
• Hermetically sealed stainless steel tank insensitive
to environment
• Various protection options (TLF, relays) to suit customer needs
• Intuitive single line mimic diagram for simple and
safe operation
• Low roof height designed for kiosks and
mini substations
• Vacuum Circuit Breaker enclosed in an SF6 insulated tank for extra protection against corrosion
and pollution
• Easy integration with SCADA network for remote operation and control
• Provision for motor actuators for remote operation and control

5. Safety features
a)Operation mechanism
e)Cable compartment
The mechanism consists of one operating shaft and
one selector. The operating shaft is used for switching
ON / OFF (Mains or Earth) and the selector is used for
selection of the Mains or Earth positions. It is impossible
to simultaneously close the Load Break Switch or Circuit
Breaker and the
Earth switch.
The cable compartments are located at the front of
the units with horizontal mounted DIN 400 type C
bushings for ease of cable connection. Vacuum Circuit
Breaker function has factory mounted protection CT
(current transformers) on the cable bushings for ease
of installation and to avoid any potential damage to CT
during transit and connections.
The mechanism
incorporates mechanical
interlocks and padlocking
facilities to improve
operator safety.
For enhanced operator safety, the cable compartments
are earthed and fully interlocked allowing access to the
operator only if the function is in Earth ON position.
There is an option of supplying these cable compartments
with Internal Arc rating as per IEC standards.
b)Anti reflex mechanism:
Earth bar in cable
compartment
A fully rated copper earth bar
is mounted inside the cable
compartment. This earth bar is
used to connect the screened
cable connectors through M12
size bolts. The bar runs through
the width of the unit and
protrudes 125mm to the rear
of the cable compartment for
connection to the main earthing system. For additional
safety it is not possible to remove it while unit is live.

Ensures a time delay between switching operations to
allow sufficient time for the main breaker to trip and clear
a fault.
c) Internal Arc withstand
Aegis SF6 Gas insulated stainless steel tanks are fully
internal arc rated and this feature is also available on
the cable compartment (optional) to ensure maximum
operator safety in the event of internal faults. As
standard, all the tanks are rated for AFL (operator safety
from the front and side of the unit) and there is an option
to request for AFLR (front, side and back of the unit).
For more details on IAC ratings, please refer to the
technical data sheet on page 20.
d)Earth and test facility
The cable earth and test facility is an optional feature
on the Load Break Switch and the Circuit Breaker. It is
located at the front of the unit for ease of access. It is
used for testing cable insulation and to locate faults in
the circuit without the need to remove the main cables
from the cable compartment, which improves the
operator safety.
The cable test access cover
is fully interlocked and
cannot be opened until
the Load Break Switch or
Circuit Breaker Switch is in
Earth ON position. The test
bushings are earthed with
a star bar which has to be
removed for cable tests.
f)VPIS
VPIS (Voltage Presence Indication System) is an optional
feature in the Aegis range. It is used for checking the
presence of voltages in the cables. The VPIS gets a
voltage signal through the voltage divider built into the
cable bushings. They can also be fitted with neon lights
and momentary latching push buttons to show voltage
presence without needing external testing probes.
Two types of voltage presence indication device
are offered:
• Pfisterer sockets
• Neon indicators with push-to-test buttons and
phase comparator sockets

d) Circuit breaker protection
Two types of protection devices are offered
to protect the circuit breaker;
i. TLF : Time Limit Fuses
ii. Protection Relays
i.TLF
When utilised in conjunction with circuit breaker type
Ring Main Units, Time Limit Fuses (TLF) are a cost effective
method of providing fault protection for overcurrent
and earth faults (optional) to a transformer of 2000kVA
or less. It is a recognised method of protection and was
developed to comply with EA 41-26 (now superseded by
ENA TS 41-36) with fuse links in accordance with ENA
TS 12-6.
It should be noted that the TLF protection system is
not a device for limiting overload levels of individual
transformers. It should be used for fault protection only.
The TLF system provides protection for overcurrent and
earth faults between the MV Circuit Breaker and the LV
protection device. The selected TLF rating should be such
that it allows for discrimination between the MV & LV
devices. This will ensure that the Circuit Breaker does not
open for faults beyond the LV distributor
protection device.
When fitted with TLF, the Ring Main Unit can also be
configured to enable tripping of the Circuit Breaker
from remote devices (Bukholtz, LV CB etc).
Fuse dimensions: Length 57mm x Diameter 13mm
RMU
Lucy Switchgear customers in Europe, the Middle East,
Africa and Asia are currently using TLF protection system
within their distribution networks.

e) Options and Accessories
i. Secondary injection
iv.Shunt trip coils
Secondary injection is used to test the relays or TLF
operation without switching on the high voltage supply
to the unit. A low voltage is applied to the secondary side
of the CT connection (located in terminal box) to test
the operation of the protection devices at the time of
commissioning and routine tests.
Shunt trips are magnetic
coils and are used to trip
circuit breakers through
local push buttons, RTUs
or additional transformer
protection devices. Shunt
trips are available in the
following voltages;
ii. Actuators (motorised)
Aegis units are fitted with 24V DC
motors, which can be powered
from the Gemini Remote Terminal
Unit (RTU) 24V DC battery in the
event of mains AC supply failure.
• DC voltage:
12V, 24V, 48V and 110V
• AC voltages:
110V, 240V
• Multiple voltage range: 24VDC – 240VAC
v. Earth Fault Indicators (EFI)
iii.Cable compartment
All the cable clamps, glands and cable compartment
sealing devices are available as retrofit options. Below is
the list of clamps available in metal (steel) and plastics.
• Single 3 core cable
• 3 single core cables
Earth Fault Indicators (EFI) are used for rapid location
and isolation of faults on medium voltage networks in
open loop ring main networks. When the unit detects
asymmetrical currents greater than 50A in the 3 phase
cable an earth fault is indicated by means of a flashing
LED or mechanical flag.
Below is the list of EFIs available for the Aegis range.

circuit breakers are located at the front
of the unit. All sets of bushings are type
‘C’ with in-line bolted connections M16
threaded in accordance with EN50181.
The bushings are accessible by removing the interlocked
cable compartment covers at the front of the unit.
The maximum cable size that can be used is:
• 300mm² 3 - core
• 500mm² single - core.
The following types of terminations can be used with
the Aegis:
Insulating Bushing Boot
Heat Shrink Insulating Bushing Boot
